Hi Folks! 👋

Happy Monday!

Some updates from Gritty & Curious HQ:

This was the first full week of the Gritty & Curious Community! We onboarded our members through 1-on-1 meetings (if you join, we’ll be sure to set up a 1 on 1 meeting as well) and have had some great discussions already.

We recorded our first episode of Gritty & Curious’s second podcast, G&C Founder’s Journal.

One of our Gritty & Curious community members, Rahul Rana wrote a book! It's called Making Moonshots. It the book, Rahul explores moonshot companies, the philosophies of founders, and blueprints to solving complex problems. Right now, it’s on pre-sale! If you are curious behind the reasons as to why Rahul wrote this book, Austin and Rahul recorded a podcast a while back which you can listen to here.

Alright, let’s jump into this week’s podcast guest!

In episode 27 of G&C, we have the extremely Gritty and CuriousJuan David Campolargo. He’s a 17-year-old author, 2 times TEDx speaker, entrepreneur, and investor. Yes, it’s a mouthful and yes it puts my 17-year-old self to shame.

As the author of Generation Optimism, Juan David strongly believes that optimism is one of the most important traits and being successful, and contrary to popular belief, it can be learned.

In this episode Austin and Juan David discuss…

How he learned to speak English fluently in 6 months

Starting a business at 13 y/o

His mission to create the next generation of doers

The importance of Optimism

…. and more!

Happy Monday! 👋

Some quick news from Gritty & Curious HQ:

We officially launched our Gritty & Curious Community on Parthean. The purpose of this community is to create a space for ambitious self-starters to share ideas, give feedback, and provide mentorship. If you are interested in joining check it out here.

Gritty & Curious started recording for our second podcast, Gritty & Curious Founder’s Journal, where Austin and I will share the most interesting thoughts we’ve had throughout the week as well as discuss the journey of building Gritty & Curious.

Gritty & Curious launched its merch shop! Get your G&C merch while supplies last.

Now that we got those updates out of the way… let me introduce this week’s podcast guest, Matt Spettel, CEO & Co-Founder of DeltaTrainer.

So what is DeltaTrainer?

Well, I’m glad you asked. Matt and his team at DeltaTrainer are working on revolutionizing the personal training/fitness industry by using wearable tech to provide real-time feedback during each set/rep of a workout. With just an Apple Watch, DeltaTrainer will automatically be able to:

Track your Reps/Sets

Fix bad form

Measure difficulty in completion of sets

… and more.

We were blown away by this technology so we decided to bring Matt onto the podcast to talk about DeltaTrainer and what it took to build this company.

In this episode, Austin and Matt have a conversation about:

The evolution of the fitness industry

Data analytics, data mining, and testing

Advice for aspiring creators

Take a listen below or in the audio player above!

As always, we have provided Podcast Highlights below with the key takeaways from the podcast (we are planning on switching things up next week by providing only key timestamps of the podcast. If you found the Podcast Highlights valuable, let us know and we might bring it back in a future iteration).

Podcast Highlights

On the Idea for DeltaTrainer (1:10)

During a lunch break, Matt Spettel and his childhood best friend Gabe Madonna came up with the idea of using wearable devices to track and detect sets/reps (an automatic logger).

How does DeltaTrainer Technology work? (2:34)

DeltaTrainer tracks the raw inertial data of any exercise through a smartwatch (3 axis of accelerometer data, 3 axis of gyroscope data, 3 axis of orientation with respect to gravity).

Next, DeltaTrainer collects the data for thousands of iterations of a specific exercise in order to increase the accuracy of exercise detection.

It then funnels the data through modern machine learning approaches in order to discern the reps, type of exercise, the difficulty of each exercise, whether the exercise had good form, and many more cool metrics.

What is the process of collecting data for exercises? (7:56)

Initially, Matt and Gabe collected the data by performing thousands of reps themselves by working out. But as the company developed, new exercise data is collected every time a user performs a rep/exercise which means each rep increases the accuracy of the product.

DeltaTrainer also hires contractors to collect data for them, which is essentially getting paid to work out. Pretty sweet gig.

Currently, DeltaTrainer has over 500 exercises and are working on much more.

DeltaTrainer is meant to be used in tandem with a personal trainer. How does that work? (10:55)

The trainer will put in the programming for the client and the DeltaTrainer app will be used to guide the client through the exercises by counting sets/reps and giving warning/tips on bad exercise form.

Key Quote: "The trainer's main function is to let you know what to do and help you have the motivation while the app is there to do the heavy lifting-- no pun intended"

What is the Future of Fitness? (18:30)

Fitness is going to go from:

Broadcast model (e.g. peleton) - one trainer broadcasting to 30+ people

Feedback Model (e.g. DeltaTrainer, Mirror, Tempo ) - real-time response to the actions of a person via wearable tech or computer vision.

The broadcast model is useful in providing content but what it lacks is connection and real-time feedback when scaled.

DeltaTrainer has been able to scale trainers up to hundreds of clients, whereas in person, they were training 20.

Key Quote: "The next level of digitized fitness is where you not only get the content of a celebrity trainer but you also get the same effect as if the celebrity trainer was standing there right next to you, coaching you through those movements."

Why Apple Watch as the company's wearable of choice to track exercise? (28:07)

Originally, Matt created his own wearable and it looked like a "hackathon project with some polish"

After talking to a mentor, he realizes that the Apple Watch was 1) already made 2) had an order of magnitude greater market penetration (~15%).

On Target Market (30:51)

Trainers:

a) who are looking to embrace remote and want to scale clients from just 20 in-person people

b) are influencer-broadcast types who can be introduced to the feedback model

c) trainers who are not satisfied with remote-coaching to be just email and pdf guides.

End-users: Busy professionals who want a good workout plan and a personal trainer but want flexibility as well.

On the journey/growth of DeltaTrainer since its inception (37:05)

DeltaTrainer started off as a side-project between Matt and Gabe during their junior year. As students, however, their main priority was school. But come spring semester, they started to gain significant interest from investors and advisors at their respective universities which shifted their mindset to take DeltaTrainer seriously.

Soon afterward, Matt and Gabe signed up for a swath of business competitions and placed very well, giving them the opportunity to be accepted into a summer Carnegie Mellon accelerator program in Silicon Valley. From here, DeltaTrainer was able to receive some initial investment money from Matt Rogers -- one of their previous mentors turned investors and founder of Nest. During this summer, they worked really hard to create a product into paying user hands because up until that point it was just a lot of beta testing and testing for market fit.

Coming out of the summer, Matt began to focus on getting users on the platform while Gabe focused on building out the tech.

This January, DeltaTrainer raised a good chunk of pre-seed money after seeing really strong growth in the platform and will be moving into an office post-COVID.

Advice for someone with an idea but unsure of next steps (52:51)

With DeltaTrainer, Matt and Gabe were unsure about a lot of details -- what they were building, how they were going to build it-- but throughout the entire process, they had confidence in themselves in creating a fitness technology to improve people's workouts.

A lot of times, student entrepreneurs, when they hit their first stumbling block just give up. They have a "unique kernel of an idea, but they don't have the right mindset or confidence to foster it through".

The key is to be able to withstand all of the troubles and tribulations of the pivoting process and finding your value proposition.

If you are apart of a university, there will be most likely be an entrepreneurship program, and it's helpful to get to know the people and become their friends. During the initial year, there will be a lot of company shaking events, and being able to call these people for advice was very important to keep the company moving in the right direction.

Key Quote: "It's a combination of confidence and surrounding yourself with very smart, helpful people"

Matt has done a lot of projects over the years (just take a look at his LinkedIn). What has he learned? (1:00:03)

You need to be passionate about what you're doing to sustain in the long-run: In senior year of AP Chemistry, Matt built a pumping system that measured chemicals and did dilutions automatically. He was ultimately able to sell the product out to chemistry labs and teachers but did not see a future in continuing to build out this product because he wasn't passionate about pumping systems -- although customer demand was there.

Other people also have to be interested in your project to sustain in the long-run: Matt's second company, InvenTower, solved the pain point of organizing electronic parts, but the product was too niche. While he was passionate about this product, he realized others needed to be interested too for it to be profitable.

Build things you are proud of. Matt's built a lot of things over the years-- some profitable, some not. But no matter what, he's always been proud of whatever he built. Build things you're proud of.

What does it mean to be Gritty & Curious? (1:00:19)

Gritty - Just go do it and don't give up when things change course

Curious - Being introspective about the problems you have in your life because that's where the most passionate ideas come from.

Hi Gritty & Curious Family,

Happy Monday! If you’ve checked Austin and my socials recently, you probably would have noticed a 💡 besides our name.

The reason is because… We’re rebranding.

Do you like it? Let us know what you think @GrittyCurious

Okay, onto the podcast!

This week, we had an amazing conversation with the one and only Mike Martocci, CEO and Founder of SwagUp — a company focused on providing quality swag to companies. In just 36 months, Michael was able to bootstrap his company from his mom’s house to 1300 customers, 65 employees, 8 figure in sales with 0 VC funding. That’s quite an amazing feat.

So how did he do it?

In this episode, Austin and Mike Martocci talk about…

Dropping out of College

What it means to be Entrepreneurial

Advice for people starting their jobs/creating opportunity during the Pandemic

and more!

Take a listen below or in the audio player above!

As always, we have provided Podcast Highlights below with the key takeaways from the podcast:

Podcast Highlights

What does it mean to be entrepreneurial?

Being entrepreneurial means to constantly be in beta- always experimenting and iterating to figure out what works and doesn't —instead of being in the mindset of "what could go wrong".

Growing up Mike has exemplified the entrepreneurial mindset — he's sold lemonade, yogurt, bundled tissue packages, baseball cards, shoveled driveways.

Key Quote: "The core tenant of being entrepreneurial is just doing things and reacting after it happens verses like overthinking it"

On Dropping out of College after Two Years

The Downside of University: There are a lot of aspects in the current education system which is unnecessary. If a person is interested in entrepreneurship, there is a lot more value in gaining exposure by starting a business and watching Shark Tank than taking a lab science class.

The Upside of University: If you can afford it, the University experience is very helpful in gaining new experiences and the transition between high school and adulthood independence.

Mike felt he experienced all the necessary components of university 2.5 years in and as a result dropped-out to start his own business.

What is the future of education?

The degree you receive after graduation is becoming increasingly less valuable. The use-case of education is shifting from certification/qualification to expertise. Companies care more about whether you can do a job as opposed to you having a degree that qualifies you to perform certain tasks and duties.

Lambda School is a prime example of the shift towards more vocational-based education for software engineering jobs. Instead of giving you a degree in computer science, they are focused on providing each student with the skills needed to land a job in software engineering. (They take a cut of your future salary for a fixed duration so they can only make money after you land a job.)

The internet has provided a way for almost anyone to learn about anything. If you are gritty and curious, you can self-select the information you need to learn. But there could be a business for curating a structured curriculum for those who want a more defined-path in education

In the traditional education system, we learn a lot of just-in-case information but the future of education will focus a lot more on just-in-time information -- knowledge that is prevalent for the current task at hand.

How do you replicate the college experience for remote learning?

This problem is the same problem as building culture in companies that are fully remote— and the solution for remote companies currently are bi-annual/annual retreats.

Building villages/communities where college students reside and hangout is another alternative to foster the "college experience" in an environment of online education.

What are the roles of offices for businesses post-COVID19?

In the past, the technology was not there to work remotely but now that it has, we will see a large transition to more fully remote businesses.

At the same time, there is no denying how important of a role physical offices plays around communication and building camaraderie. But with the advent of remote work, physical offices can be allocated more efficiently.

A future model of what offices might be is shared workspaces or "corporate clubhouses" where two-to-three different companies will have a designated space to hangout/bring in clients but are always free to work remotely.

On collaboration, socialization and culture at SwagUp during the COVID-19 pandemic?

A misconception of culture in a company is the benefits you receive —free swag, free food, retreats, parties. Instead, the important aspects of culture are how transparent a company is with information, the value on meritocracy, the rewards of doing great work, etc.

At SwagUp, the culture is fostered through transparency -- weekly company-wide meeting which goes through financials, potential hires, etc-- and creating valuable and meaningful work to give people purpose.

Advice on people starting a job right now

Be valuable to a company from day one and try to help solve problems.

Be Gritty and Curious— Mike always looks for people who are like this when he's hiring. (e.g. have you started something on the side? What are you really interested in that you've delved deeper into?)

Get in touch with people you admire at the company that are ahead of you and ask them a lot of questions -- people love to share their knowledge and will most likely answer you. This will help build a connection as well.

Key Quote: "Be as valuable as possible to the company right away. There's always room for people to move up who are problem solvers and who are gritty and curious"

Advice on people who have lost their job/internship opportunity due to the pandemic

Don't worry about the "gap" in your resume. It's very understandable that you are out of a job, given that 36 million people are unemployed right now.

But there are two things you can do in this position:

1) Start something on your own and constantly learn. Take advantage of the free time to build yourself up and creating something worth sharing in the future.

2) Work at a company for free. If you are able to prove yourself to be valuable, chances are they will hire you when given the opportunity. The hardest thing is getting into the door.

Key Quote: "The hardest thing is the initial friction of giving you money or giving you the position. But if you work for free and start to show your value even literally in a week or two people will understand we can't afford to lose this person"

On Building a Community and gaining Influence:

We can learn a lot from social media influencers. The best social media influencers pump out valuable content every single day.

Getting the initial traction is tough, but once you have that, it's just momentum that builds growth. This is why to start off you need to capitalize on high leverage opportunities (e.g. working for free).

Key Quote: "The greatest way to build any platform is to provide more value than you ask for in return"

On Why Twitter is so Powerful

"There's no other platform you get such direct access to the smartest people in the world"

To use Twitter properly, you need to curate your follower list so that you follow interesting people who are signaling interesting ideas and eliminate all the noise.

Mike Martucci's recommended people to follow:

@naval - Naval Ravikant

@RMB - Rob Bailey

@benthompson - Ben Thompson

On Content Strategy and Best Platform for Sharing Message

Don't force out content just to stick to a schedule. If you can, you should but being consistently bad is still bad.

Instead, focus on writing evergreen, valuable content as frequently as possible as opposed to just writing for the sake of writing.

LinkedIn is the best platform for getting recognized because of how their algorithm works. If someone likes something on LinkedIn, it gets propagated throughout their entire network.

Advice on Overcoming Failure

People are too caught up on failure. Everyone fails every day, week, month, and year.

It's more important to optimize for failure. Instead of worrying for failure, put everything out there. Speed and rapid iteration is more important than any failure.

Key Quotes: "100 out of the 120 are probably going to fail but you'll get the 20 and you'll move quickly", "If you can maintain optimism for as long as possible, you're 80% of the way there to doing anything valuable"

On Most Impactful Books

Purple Cow by Seth Godin

Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind by Al Ries and Jack Trout

Happy Monday 💪 &🧠 Fam!

If you’ve haven’t heard of Morning Brew, please check them out here. If you have, you’ll know they’re one of the most popular online email newsletters — providing up-to-date news daily in 5 minutes.

But why are we talking about Morning Brew?

Well, this week on the Gritty and Curious podcast, we got the opportunity to have a conversation with Josh Kaplan, the Head of Podcast, Strategy, and Operations at the Morning Brew. He is the backbone of one of Morning Brew’s podcast, Business Casual.

We learned a lot through this hour-long conversation and was definitely one of our favorites to record.

In it, Austin and Josh discuss a great deal ranging from:

Morning Brew’s Strategy with Podcasting

Lessons Learned from Starting a Podcast

Future of Audio

… and more!

Take a listen below or in the audio player above!

As always, we have provided Podcast Highlights below with the key takeaways from the podcast:

🎙 Josh Kaplan

Podcast Highlights

Why did Morning Brew get into Podcasting?

Audio is becoming more prevalent as a source for media consumption. It's a lot more intimate compared to a picture or a tweet as the audio goes directly into your ear. Podcasting is different compared to many other forms of media because it's not fighting with other content in a social media feed. Instead, once you subscribe to it, it goes directly to you.

In addition, podcasting is a very easy way to build proof of concept and proof of audience without much overhead. If people like an idea on a podcast, it's not too hard to extend it to other platforms/mediums such as video and Youtube.

How has Morning Brew Strategy Changed With Podcasting?

Business Casual's strategy stemmed from figuring out the components and value missing within the Morning Brew Newsletter. While the newsletter provides a great five-minute overview of the current state of the business world, it lacked the depth for those interested in a particular topic. With this problem in mind, the Business Casual Podcast was formed. The podcast created an avenue for Morning Brew to delve much deeper into the stories, trends, and people behind the business stories in which a 5-minute Newsletter couldn't offer.

The Business Casual is defined as a "show". Why is that different from podcasting?

Podcasting has a very strict connotation. It has to be free, universally receivable and openly distributed.

By calling Business Casual a "show", it broadens the scope of where Business Casual can reside and by virtue, it's business opportunities.

The Business Casual is no longer confined into just being a podcast and can explore different mediums and platforms as well as evolve its brand.

One example: Business Casual is trying to set up a commerce site that provides affiliate links to all of the books discussed within each episode of the show.

Thoughts on Spotify signing exclusive deals to bring in Podcasters

It's exciting and dangerous.

In the future, media companies such as Spotify will start rolling out ad platforms similar to Youtube which help creators monetize their content without lifting a finger. If Spotify can figure out how to align advertisement content to match podcast content, it will make advertising in podcasts a lot more powerful than it is right now.

At the same time, media companies such as Spotify may start declaring ownership/IP over content which may make it hard for creators to seek opportunities elsewhere.

Business Model for Business Casual

Whereas many podcasts sell ads as an exclusive feature within an episode, Business Casual sells ads on an impression basis. For example, if an advertiser buys 50,000 impressions, their ad will be displayed in 50,000 listens of a podcast and then stop playing. This is valuable because it means the ad can be "fresh" and listened to an episode regardless of release date.

In the future, Business Casual plans of displaying ad space on the cover art of their podcast for a flat fee.

For those who are starting podcasting, how do you transition into interviewing bigger name guests?

There's no silver bullet.

However, what you can do is make yourself as valuable as possible. Then, provide a simple, polite ask the person you are trying to interview and give them reasons why they would be a good guest on the podcast.

Key Quote: "The better you make your podcast, the better you curate your guest for your listeners, you get closer to whoever your dream guest might be."

Future Plans for Morning Brew in Podcast World

Creating new brands and shows that are related to general business (e.g. a daily show, a trivia show, etc) and provide another way to make the business world more engaging.

Producing narrative serial podcasts that are short-run 10 episodes. These will be podcasts that tell a longer, interesting story though the "series" and be sponsored throughout by a single advertiser

Developing Brand Extensions -- podcasts that extend existing brands such as "Morning Brew", "Marketing Brew" etc.

Lessons learned from Launching a Podcast

Continue to doing/creating content that you like as opposed to solely relying on data and spreadsheets. Most of the success has come from when the content created was something we really liked.

Asking questions and receiving feedback has led to a lot of valuable moments when creating podcasts. When you put in the effort to ask for feedback, people tend to put in the effort to give it back.

Key Quote: "Creating what we like creates the best content, the best content is the best growth driver"

Who should start a podcast and what are the benefits?

For an individual:

Anyone who wants to start a podcast should start a podcast. The beauty is that anyone with a mic and create a podcast and distribute it to anyone essentially for free.

It's a great way to network, build your personal brand, and share conversations with friends.

For a business:

Podcasting is a great way to prove a concept and find an audience to grow the concept.

Its advertising is very effective. Many people skip video ads but very rarely do people skip audio ads because they are more authentic and embedded into the podcast.

Key Quote: "To build recurring revenue, there needs to be recurring conversation and podcasting is a fantastic way to do it."

What is the Future of Audio?

In the past decade, people have been so focused by Video Media that audio has a lot of space for technological advancement. For example, there's currently no way to engage with a podcast. It is the same content regardless of location, movement, etc. Technology can change that.

All forms of audio content will begin to start existing-- free, paid, exclusive etc.

Querying of audio similar to how we can query questions with Google.

Thanks for reading! We appreciate the entire G&C fam.

And we’ll see you next week and as always…

🎙Podcast Highlights:

On the Inspiration behind Triage Podcast

Christie, Natalie and Rachana have been friends since university and have always wanted to work together in some capacity in the future. Realizing the engaging conversations they often had about the medical field, they decided to share it with the world by starting a podcast centered around healthcare. Especially with the current global pandemic, The Triage hopes to create dialogue around COVID-19, the current medical system and its future.

On COVID-19's affect on Mental Health

With the disruption of routine activities from COVID-19, people are having difficulty adjusting to this new life.

The Elderly: For the elderly, their normally isolated life has been exacerbated with the requirements of social distancing.

The Workforce: Having lost their jobs indefinitely, the unemployed are becoming increasingly anxious

The Frontline: Members of the frontline are predicted to experience PTSD from the daily exposure to the patients of the virus.

On COVID-19's affect on Physical Health

COVID-19 has played a large factor in affecting people's physical health due to the fear of exposure. Because of this, people are exercising far less than they used to (critical for physical health) and are no longer going in for routine checks at the doctor which can lead to the lack of screening for non-COVID illnesses (e.g. cancer, heart disease).

Tips on maintaining good Physical + Mental Health during COVID-19

If you can see a therapist. Therapy can help when dealing with anxiety. In addition, a lot of insurance providers are covering therapy sessions during this pandemic so make sure to see if you are qualified for coverage.

Do Home Workouts. Go on YouTube and do a home workout video (check out Chloe Ting and MadFit). There are a plethora of videos for all levels and this is a great alternative to maintaining physical health but are fearful of exercising outside.

Focus on the Positive. With the news constantly reporting mortality rates and totals, it's important to focus on the positives as well (e.g. the progression of the curve flattening)

On Podcast Creation Process

Create a google doc to list out all your ideas and make sure to do research on each of the topics to discuss during a podcast.

On Why U.S. COVID Numbers are so High

After returning from her trip to China in January 2020, Christie noticed the drastic contrast between U.S. COVID-19 testing and China COVID-19 testing. Whereas China tested all passengers before entering and leaving a flight, the U.S. did almost nothing.

Christie believes one of the main reasons why COVID-19 cases are so high is because there was a lack of early intervention by the United States.

Fact or fiction?
This is quite interesting.
So, picture a spectrum, on one end we have fiction and on the other end, we have facts.
When we absorb media, content, or information, we need to consider where it falls on this spectrum. Is it a fact? Is it fiction?
By reminding ourselves to think about these things, it forces us to rationalize the information we are absorbing. So often, do we hear something and immediately think it is true. Immediately, we join the bandwagon because that is what everyone else is thinking. Or, immediately we are sold because some people are awesome at convincing and persuading. However, if we take time to think about our spectrum, and where this information falls, then we can protect ourselves from instant and mindless persuasion.
