I recently spoke with Claudia Penna Rojas from the @just.stopoil coalition. Claudia is a climate activist from the UK who is working to ensure the UK Government commits to halting new fossil fuel licensing and production. 'We're completely nonviolent. I think it's absolutely necessary. Both in terms of how you engage with people. I think the minute you use violence that will automatically just harm so many people. So from a strategic point, also, we're trying to create this world that is so much better and loving and caring And how do you do that using violence? And also it whenever you have a group that is violent or uses, you know, more violent tactics, it usually then becomes primarily like able bodied white men And what we need to create are movements that are inclusive, that bring everyone along and using a nonviolent approach. Hi folks! New interview with Nyke Slawik up. Aged 28, she is among the youngest politicians in parliament. She is advocating for a more equal society as well as climate justice. Learning about the severity of climate change when she was 15, Nyke decided to join the Green Youth in 2009. Two experiences close to her home town really shaped her thinking of how our society is failing to implement climate-friendly solutions. Firstly, the region Nyke grew up in is part of Europe’s biggest coal industry and the epicenter of carbon emissions in the EU. Secondly, many highways are planned to be extended or new ones in construction, two of them in her constituency. Now in the Bundestag, Nyke is serving as Vice Chair of the Committee on Transport and is concerned with making Germany’s transport sector climate neutral as quickly as possible, which is a tricky undertaking in a country with one of the biggest car industries worldwide. Her main objective is to stop the German government from building new highways and instead bring more people into climate-friendly public transport. I recently had the privilege of speaking to former Amazon worker, now labor union organizer Chris Smalls. I spoke to Chris while he was in the midst of organizing for his campaign to unionize the Staten Island Amazon facility.
Since our interview, on 1 April, workers at the JFK8 fulfilment centre in Staten Island, New York voted 2,654-2,131 in favor of the union of becoming the first Amazon facility in the US to be officially unionised. Chris is a force of nature, a passionate person and is someone with an enormous amount of conviction.
