Exploring the history of the Disney Parks (with a dash of the ridiculous!), Distory with Kate and Kirk is an adventure into the fascinatingly obscure details that have made the Disney parks what they are today.
WDW’s new fantasyland was not planned to look like the
one we have today.
In this episode of Distory, we visit the dilapidated Fantasyland of the Magic Kingdom of the late 90s and early 2000s to watch how Imagineering’s major overhaul of this land evolved over time. Along the way, we find some lost concepts of major areas that were scrapped, including a Cinderella attraction that is not quite like the one Kate wishes Disney would create. As we finally arrive at the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train concept, we dive into the construction process. Kate walks us through the evolution of the ride vehicles in development, including their fascinating hand-painting process. Kirk discusses the construction on a larger scale, walking us through the assembly of this E-ticket attraction. We also both share some of our other Disney projects and wax nostalgic about the first time we met each other IRL (in real life).

Is this the most unhinged attraction that Disney has ever created?
In this episode of Distory, we head back to the 1971 version of Snow White’s Adventures in Walt Disney World. We start by finding ourselves in a dark dwarf’s cottage (with a bizarre guest) before encountering many MANY jump scares by the terrifying witch, whose hands have a secret. We race through the mine before discovering a crazy scene that is not in the original film and make a connection between its ending and the 1958 Alice in Wonderland dark ride. After we escape, we move forward in time to the 1994 version of Snow White’s Scary Adventures, finding the ways Imagineering tried to make this ride less scary and more like the original film. Much to Kirk’s chagrin, Kate talks about the history of turtlenecks, ponders the different looks of princes, and gives us some mirror lessons before we say goodbye to this bizarre classic attraction.

What made the WDW 1971 version of Snow White’s Adventures the most scary version of them all?
In this episode of Distory, we head to Walt Disney World’s Fantasyland to be terrified by the 1971 attraction Snow White’s Adventures. We start by discussing the Towering Talent of Claude Coats and his influence in these classic attractions, and do a quick tour of some lost Fantasyland ride concepts before heading into Snow White’s Adventures. On our way, we encounter a poorly-dressed queen, some throne history (and confusion), identify a dungeon spider, and encounter some creepy eyes and trees. We hear about how Disney covered up some mistakes in Snow White’s animation, Kirk regales us with his Sleepy Hollow dreams, and Kate admits something she hopes she never has to do again.

In this episode of Distory, we head back to Snow White's Enchanted Wish to discover some details that no one notices in the attraction. As we ride through the second half of this iconic ride, we compare and contrast the previous iteration of Snow White's Scary Adventures with the changes that were made to make the storytelling honor the 1937 feature film. Along the way, Kate talks about the history of door knockers and crystal balls, Kirk investigates some gargoyles, and we find a beautiful tree with a secret meaning (and a few others wearing rather odd disguises).

What was the real reason Disneyland’s Fantasyland rides were expanded in 1983?
In this episode of Distory, we time travel to Disneyland in the early 1980s to look at some original WED Imagineering documents that tell the story of New Fantasyland’s construction, including Snow White’s Scary Adventures. From demolition to the inspiration for the new design, we discuss the changes from Walt’s Fantasyland to the updated version before heading inside the attraction to find a (purposefully) frightening queue, a fascinating (for Kirk) stump, and an early ride concept that didn’t actually come to pass. In the dwarf's cottage, Kate gets on several soapboxes, we marvel at the dwarf’s shaving rituals, and Kirk enlightens us about the unique candle holder that Snow White is carrying as she heads to bed.

Why do Disney’s Snow White rides have so many dungeon scenes?
In this episode of Distory, we continue our Snow White series by braving the original Disneyland Snow White ride called Snow White and Her Adventures (or Snow White’s Adventures, it didn’t seem to matter much back then, so pick your favorite). After seeing some concept art that doesn’t stray too far from the feature film, we hear from Arrow Development about the unique development of this opening day ride, find some mural seams, and geek out over a camouflaged operator station. Heading into the ride, we are creeped out by a tiny Dopey, find a connection back to the Haunted Mansion, and meet a skeleton named Oswald. We find some more scary trees, talk about witch variations, and end the episode with Kirk insisting that he will always call the witch a hag (despite Kate’s numerous evidence that the name is incorrect).

Who was Snow White's mother? And what other critical information is missing from the feature film?
In this episode of Distory, we start a new series on the history of the Snow White attractions of the Disney parks. But before we can discuss the rides, we have to pay homage to the first-ever full-length feature animation that made it all possible: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. In this episode, we take a journey back in time to learn why Snow White was first, what story elements you might have missed without more context, some missing scenes, and more than a few rejected dwarf names. We discuss the innovative use of rotoscoping and the multiplane camera and hear from the animators themselves about their experience working on the film. We end this episode with some inspiring words from Walt Disney himself and spend a few moments reflecting on the importance of not giving up even when others don’t believe in your dream.

What joke is present in Disneyland Paris's Big Thunder that most guests don't notice?
We’ve come to the end of our epic 20-episode series featuring Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, but we have time for one final ride on a runaway train as we hop aboard the best version of this attraction in Disneyland Paris. As promised, Kirk packs us some miner's lunches before we talk about a mistake Tony Baxter fixed, some lost Audio Animatronic miners, a piece of mining equipment that surprises us by being in all four versions, and a possum’s anatomically impossible actions. We also hear a bizarre poem about beans, speculate on the meaning of some mining tools, and explain some foreshadowing elements that many overlook. We end this series looking back on some of our favorite moments and takeaways and feel a little sad to watch the train pull into the station after such a wild ride in the wilderness.

How is the Tower of Terror connected to Disneyland Paris's Big Thunder Mountain Railroad?
In this episode of Distory with Kate & Kirk, we continue our exploration of the "crown jewel" of all the Big Thunder Mountain Railroads, the one in Disneyland Paris. After a brief discussion of concept and construction, we check out all of Pat Burke’s amazing antiques in the queue, including a few with some surprising stories. From a coveted piece of rare machinery to a tribute to one of WED’s great model makers, this queue was meant to be the pinnacle of all the versions of Big Thunder. After waxing nostalgic about stamp mills and woodstoves, we continue down to the loading dock where Kirk is delighted by a particular prop. Kate gets embarrassed by an accidental turn of phrase, Kirk makes fun of how she says pan, and we laugh way too much as we near the finale of our Big Thunder Mountain series.

What secret tributes can be found in Big Grizzly Mountain to several attractions that came before it?
In this episode of Distory with Kate & Kirk, we laugh our way through the creative storytelling of Hong Kong Disneyland's Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars. What piece of Disney history is hanging in Tokyo's Big Thunder Mountain?
On this episode of Distory, we wrap up our visit to Westernland in Tokyo Disneyland as we hop aboard a runaway train and compare the layout of this version of Big Thunder Mountain with the ones found in Disneyland and Magic Kingdom parks. Along the way, we talk homesteading, sludgy pancakes, cowboy coffee, and bats (both with and without strings). We then travel over to Hong Kong’s Grizzly Gulch where we discover some nods to Disneyland’s history hidden in this miniature version of Frontierland. After a tour of the town and its backstory, we meet a very Lucky dog, a giant nugget, grab some (not so) traditional mining food, and meet a man named Tiny who did a little too much skylarking. We end this episode by going off the rails on a nautical etymology tangent, with Kirk getting irritated at Kate for mixing metaphors when it comes to dad jokes.

What celebration in Disney history wasn't really a celebration?
We’re celebrating 100 episodes of Distory with Kate & Kirk with a fun episode dedicated to six unique celebrations throughout all of Disney history! Kirk’s three stories take us (via a few hats) to a galaxy far, far away, a nauseating (or creative?) overlay, and a long-forgotten magical tribute. Kate’s three stories head back a bit further (as usual) and involve some jealousy over a tiny hat, kidnapping a public figure, and a trip back to the Haunted Mansion for a (non?) celebration we have never discussed before. We also spend a few moments reminiscing about what 100 episodes has meant to us , where we've been, and expressing our deep appreciation for our Distory friends who are journeying along with us with each episode on this crazy podcast ride.

Is Tokyo Disneyland's Big Thunder really just a copy of the U.S. Disney parks?
On this episode of Distory, we head overseas to the wilds of Westernland in Tokyo Disneyland to attempt to dig up some history of Disney’s third iteration of Big Thunder Mountain. Along the way, we briefly discuss how this park came to be, find some new mining equipment we haven’t seen before (and some we have), get excited about a foos engine and Pelton wheel, and debate way too long about possible tram buckets on blueprints. We hear from Pat Burke about how Big Thunder brought him closer to Michael Jackson, Kirk struggles to pronounce various geological names, and we hear an oration of a patent for a tool you’ll never see the same again. Kate waters some borax mules, Kirk finds a monocled robot, and all our detailed research makes us pause right before loading onto the Big Thunder trains, which means we’ll have to hop aboard the actual ride on our next episode.

What story is the mining equipment telling us on Big Thunder Mountain?
On this episode of Distory, we complete our ride through of Walt Disney World’s Big Thunder Mountain, pausing to notice all the details and history along the way. We begin by discussing what Kirk calls the “Ram Trick” (and Kate insists is not a thing) before discovering an abandoned mine, a dangerous saw, and a few somewhat lackluster special effects (including why they are lackluster). As we hold on tight during this wild ride of an episode, we collect some facts about rocker boxes, miner’s moss, and how weather affects geothermal activity, before slowing down to spy the roundhouse and a blacksmith area that almost everyone misses. Kirk sings a little karaoke, Kate is too gullible when it comes to his jokes, and we share some thoughts about Marc Davis’s legacy and our own pursuit of what matters.

Why is the mine in Big Thunder named Dave V. Jones?
And who exactly is dancing in the Gold Dust Saloon?
On this episode of Distory, we step aboard the Big Thunder Mountain trains in Walt Disney World to ride through the attraction, pointing out obscure history, details, and hidden gems along the way. After dodging some rubber bats and admiring some old cacti, we make a U-turn into the Town of Tumbleweed, at the very heart of all of this Big Thunder’s storytelling. From repurposed critters to sinking dad jokes and an important mess that everyone misses, this town is jam-packed full of Marc Davis nods and creative storytelling that most people miss. After petting the pigs goodbye, we head into the nautical-themed mine, find a connection back to the queue, and second-guess something we found back in Disneyland’s version of the ride. Kate disappoints Kirk by knowing a secret already, and Kirk throws it back with some old tunes and movie references before we come to a screeching halt at the bottom of B lift (to be continued next week).

Is there a hidden canary in Big Thunder’s queue?
This episode of Distory is truly for the birds as we head into the ventilation room of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in Walt Disney World. As we finish our exploration of the queue, we discuss one of the oldest popular forms of animation from the 1800s, resuscitate some canaries, and find some very dangerous rocks. Kate discovers a few more connections to the Apple Dumpling Gang (which Kirk clearly loves) and we both puzzle over a few items we have yet to figure out in the queue. Inching our way closer to getting on this wild ride, we both start to lose it as Kate resists the urge to be a completionist and Kirk contemplates investing in sticking tommies. But we are both delighted by something in the load area that no one ever notices (but hopefully will now).

Are there tommy knockers in Big Thunder Mountain?
And what movie do you NEED to watch to understand this queue?In this episode of Distory, we inch our way through the queue of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in Walt Disney World. But we don’t get very far; in fact, there are so many hidden details and secrets in just the foreman's office that this entire episode is dedicated to that space alone. As we take in all of the hidden mining (and Disney) history, references, and secrets, we realize that one Disney movie above all else is mentioned way more times than we expected, and is a must-watch for any Distorian who wants to understand the queue of this iconic attraction. On our visit to the Big Thunder Mining company office, Kate points out an inconsistency with a wood stove, Kirk explains the mystery of Tommy Knockers, we both go a little cross-eyed trying to read the town bulletin board, and Kirk gets irritated with Kate (but she wins him over by talking about lamps).

In this episode of Distory, we go off the rails as we explore the spectacular beginnings of Walt Disney World’s Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. From unbelievable vistas of an underdeveloped Frontierland to absurd mining jokes, we follow the early history of this iconic attraction through its opening day before heading to the beginning of the queue. From there, we have some fun unpacking even the smallest details of the outdoor queue area, including explaining how the set design illustrates the official backstory in ways you might not have noticed before. As we come around the bend toward the entrance, Kirk finds a way to trick Kate about a rusty bucket, Kate gets irritated at him for not listening, and we take an extended side trip to Joshua Hendy Iron Works to discover some men who helped shape the Disney parks as we know them.

What parts of Disneyland’s Big Thunder Mountain Railroad were borrowed from somewhere else?In this episode of Distory, we hop aboard Disneyland’s Big Thunder Mountain Railroad for a complete ride-through of the attraction from load to unload, analyzing each scene for the hidden history it holds. From the history of gas lamps to the bones of Dinosaur Gap and everything in between, this episode is as wild as it gets, including real remnants from America’s gold mines, missing smoke effects, exploding livestock, and a very plaintive opossum. Along the way, we find a few pieces from Mine Train Through Nature’s Wonderland, talk about some changing water, and solve a few mysteries we’d considered in previous episodes. After an Irish serenade by Kate and Kirk doing his best Don Knotts impression, we splash down at the end of the ride and say goodbye to Disneyland with a secret Walt tribute and a story about a dramatically torn Disney fence.

How is the People Mover (and Indiana Jones) related to Big Thunder Mountain?
In this episode of Distory, we chug along in our story of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in Disneyland as we highlight some of the unique processes and features of its construction. Though this episode had a few bumps in the rails (our audio/video had a glitch - sorry about that!) we still walk through the stories and secrets of the queue, including some antiques, superstitions, nods to other Big Thunders around the world, and an odd feature borrowed from another Disneyland attraction (and then subsequently adopted accidentally into a major movie franchise). As we come into the station (literally), we get angry at some trash cans, search for vultures, learn a thing or two about a logo, and discover a bizarre walrus that makes Kirk nervous. We end this episode at the beginning (of the ride, that is) where a few horseshoes and a little-noticed plaque will keep you busy the next time you’re waiting for the wildest ride in the wilderness.

We also take a side trip to Discovery Bay and explore how Geyser Falls (and then Geyser Mountain) would have tied in thematically with the attraction we know and love today. How many ideas for Big Thunder Mountain are simply recycled old ones?
In this episode of Distory, we keep chugging along in our Big Thunder Mountain series as we start by saying goodbye to Mine Train Through Nature’s Wonderland (but not before we learn a few lost concepts in an attempt to save it, some of which we see today in the current Big Thunder). After tearing down Cascade Peak and mentioning where a few of the animals made a new home, we hop over to Walt Disney World to learn about the largest never-built show structure in Disney’s history, Thunder Mesa. After some twists and turns on a (boring?) version of a runaway mine train, we roll to a stop as Tony Baxter takes the reins from Marc Davis and sketches the first concepts for the Big Thunder we know it today (well, before it was shelved and then built elsewhere). We take a rabbit trail to Pirates to debate what park wears it best, and Kirk derails Kate’s transitions as he recovers from climbing Everest on the Swiss Family Treehouse. What was the most successful (and disastrous) animatronic that Disney ever made?
In this episode of DIstory, we once again hop aboard Mine Train Through Nature's Wonderland in Disneyland as we continue this series about the origins of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. After rounding Cascade Peak and learning about a significant waterfall, we head into bear country to spy some itchy bears, piston fish, and a scary trestle. After hearing an incredibly offensive joke near the Olympic Elk and spending way too long trying to find a red-tailed hawk, we move along to the Living Desert, where Kirk is scared by snakes and Kate gets schooled about Peccaries. Through it all, we point out some pieces of this classic attraction that still exist today that you can look for the next time you’re in Disneyland.

What inspired the little mining town of Rainbow Ridge?
On this episode of Distory, we hold on (loosely?) to our hats and glasses as we embark on the slow-moving Rainbow Cavern’s Mine Train, one of the predecessors of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Along the way, we point out some of our favorite sights in the painted desert, including a bizarre group of 7 Dwarfs, a teeny tiny cabin, dangerous rock formations, miniature pueblos, and, of course, the famous Rainbow Caverns themselves. Kirk also loses it over the sound of a “magical” instrument, and Kate points out the origin of a famous Walt quote and also where we get a well-known sign in Radiator Springs.

In this episode of Distory, we mosey on into the town of Phantom Canyon where playful spooks are having a (western-themed) swinging wake. As we inch through this fascinating alternative to the Haunted Mansion graveyard scene, we compare Marc Davis’s and Mary Blair’s original concept art for Western River Expedition to what made it into Phantom Manor, find some familiar faces, and discover stories from Victorian literature that inspired this spooky netherworld. After telling a few ghost stories of our own and flying through the vortex, we escape the manor only to find ourselves in Boot Hill cemetery, which has its own sordid history laced with scandal and mystery.

And why should you pay attention to a specific tree?
In this episode of Distory, we waltz into the ballroom of Disney’s Phantom Manor in Disneyland Paris, investigating some moldy cakes, scary makeup, and a moving Phantom. We then move into Melanie Ravenswood’s boudoir, finding hidden storytelling around the room cloaked in shadow and often easily missed. We also listen to Melanie’s lament and visit the history behind her mournful song before heading out the window and down into the catacombs. After waving to a dog inspired by the US Haunted Mansions, we try to make sense of the actions of a few creepy bones and discover some missing singing busts, one of which is not quite so missing in the original versions of the Haunted Mansion.

How does Disney make an old manor look new again?
And what elements did Phantom Manor borrow from the US Parks?
In this episode of Distory, we step into the decrepit halls of Phantom Manor, finding secrets, stories, and spectral beings along the way. After analyzing how the special effects are achieved in both the foyer and doorless chamber, we then take some time in the portrait gallery (both old and new), say hello to some stanchion bats, and find a connection to an old 1964 piece of concept art. We climb aboard our doom buggies for an enlightening (and frightening) trip through the endless hallway and music room, before finding some skeletal hands, demons, and dark spaces in the corridor of doors. We end this episode in Leota’s seance circle, discussing the wild differences between what we see in Paris vs the US Disney parks.

Why did Disney make a ride so bad that it didn’t even last a year?
Buckle up for a cruise down the streets of Hollywood as we explore the history of Disney California Adventure’s Superstar Limo! If you’re confused (and horrified) by this short-lived Disney attraction, you’re not alone. We attempt to explain why how this ride came to be, including some budget cuts, drastic changes, and what it could have been after they closed it in less than a year. We also laugh hysterically as we try to mimic the smarmy agent puppet Swifty La Rue, pose like the creepy “minimatronics,” and try to find a context in which we would use the phrase “big boffo.” Our Eisner rivalry is also alive and well as we continue to debate his positive and negative influences in the Disney parks.

Why were headhunters in the Jungle Cruise? Is the plane from Casablanca really in the Jungle Cruise? And what does the zebra's mane have to do with Roy Disney?
In this episode of Distory, we visit the downed plane, chatting about its controversial historical connections to Casablanca and its current ties to the Society of Explorers and Adventurers. Which Jungle Cruise elephant was inspired by Walt Disney?

The backside of water Jungle Cruise joke is not as old as you think, and neither are many other "classic" skipper jokes!
In this episode of Distory, we finish our walkthrough of the history of the Jungle Cruise script, comparing how the jokes evolved over the decades. We uncover some problematic jokes that have been (thankfully) retired, relive the glory days of the 1990s, and end our tour with the discovery of a joke that has been around since the very beginning and is still told today. Kate also stumbles over her words while Kirk gives his best impression of an elephant, and we all laugh much too hard at our own ridiculous jokes in true Distory style.

The hitchhiking ghosts take a hike for Disneyland's Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay in favor of Oogie Boogie... right?
Well, not quite.
In this episode of Distory, we return to the Haunted Mansion for a look at the making of the Nightmare before Christmas & some other mansion overlay possibilities that never came to pass. We then hop in our dark carriages and go on a hunt in every nightmarish scene in the mansion for an (unofficial) mascot and explore some unique connections to Disney parks history tied into the overlay at both Disneyland and Tokyo Disneyland.
Note: Somehow we both managed to forget to include the fact that Madame Leota for this overlay is Kim Irvine, who just so happens to be the daughter of Leota Toombs (the original Madame Leota). We were so delighted by Kirk singing the 13 days of Christmas that it must have dematerialized out of our minds. You have our apologies.
