Hello friends, welcome back! On Friday, Daddy Dan announced that workers are free to return to the office without a cap on numbers (but still adhering to those pesky density levels). Whilst this is a resounding cornerstone of our hard work over the past year to return to "normal" life, it also spells the end of WFH arrangements for most office workers. Some are more pleased than others...

So today, we are taking you through your basic minimum employment rights (your National Employment Standards, or NES) and we discuss whether your NES rights give you grounds to request to continue to work from home. The short answer is possibly but it is best to chat to your employer or Fairwork once you know your basic rights!

Go forth pals, know your rights and live your best, well-informed life!

Hello dear listener friends! Today we are celebrating because on Friday 19 March 2021, one half of this podcast became a qualified Australian lawyer! After six long years of studying, Samara finally reached the end (or a beginning, depending on your levels of optimism)! Due to COVID, the usual fanfare of admission was replaced by a two line email. Fun.

So, to mark the most special occasion, this week's show takes you through Caitlin and Samara's journey to get to law school, how we are going with it (or went with it in Samara's case) and your comprehensive guide into how to become a lawyer - there are more steps than you'd think.

We hop you enjoy this more informal chat. Happy Wednesday pals!

Happy Wednesday folks! Today we have the lovely Alex on the show, going through workplace bullying with us. We have all had questionable workplaces (hospo @ 15, hello) or fallen victim to a mean boss or cruel co-worker. Alex, a passionate young employment lawyer, takes us through your options if you find yourself in this very situation. It is intriguing and so useful, and we are ridiculously grateful to Alex for giving up her time.

Alex is also an ambassador for Yes Queen, an Australian initiative addressing bullying in the workplace. Their mission is to future-proof wellbeing at work by erasing bullying and cultivating safe, positive and inclusive cultures. In Yes Queen's words...“We spend so much of our lives working; let’s make it an empowering and soul-nourishing experience for everyone”.

Today we are talking about everyone's favourite topic - DOGS! That may have been click bait because we actually take a bit of a delve into animal cruelty - what it is, what it covers and who investigates it. We tell a fair few fluffy stories about the little creatures we love (a little smoodle called Norman, mainly) and implore you to report any complaints to RSPCA if you see something that just doesn't look right. We get so much love from our little furry friends (all creatures, great and small - does that trigger anyone to that ad a few years ago https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vO5qXw-WTDk).

Come along with us - this one is short, sweet and a little serious somewhere around 10 minutes. Enjoy!

How the heck is it March already?? We are asking ourselves the same question...it has been a busy week but we managed to squeeze in a quick chat with the lovely Maddy, a Brisbane based employment lawyer. Maddy takes us through her experiences as a young lawyer, navigating the workplace after graduation and getting involved. Maddy came out as trans in 2019 and gives us such an eloquent insight into being a trans woman while also being a working professional. Her story is inspiring and we walked away feeling both invigorated and educated. We cannot wait for you to listen!

Thank you to Maddy for her time, openness and wisdom.

To be zucced is to be cancelled by Facebook, and last Wednesday, our dear listener friends, Australia was zucced. While there are endless play on words we can use here (get zucced, what the zucc, so on and so forth) but we won't waste your time. Today we delve into the furore we all woke up to last week when Facebook removed all news content from our feeds. Why, you may ask? Well you better tune in to - basically the Australian Government is looking to pass some legislation that spells trouble for the bank balances of big tech corporations like Google and Facebook and boy have they taken a stand. We talk the why, how and what this means for you.

We also hear from lovely listener Alyssa! She reached out to us over the week and we couldn't be more excited to feature her! C'mon, slide into our DMs with your thoughts, we know you want to...

Ah, yes, another Wednesday is among us. This week we run you through the ever-prominent #FreeBritney movement, the Framing Britney Spears doco, what the heck a conservatorship is and why Britney has been in one for the past 10+ years (hint: this story is multi-faceted, double-sided, and ridiculously cryptic). We then finish by giving you our personal opinions on the conservatorship saga, the glaring obvious issues with the entire conservatorship process, and checks and balances (or lack thereof) in the process plus of course, there's no woman in the spotlight story without the misogyny and mistreatment that goes with it. Yep, there's a lot. Good luck, pals!

Happy hump day guys and gals! Today, we are bringing back one of our fave segments, In the Media, to give you an update on Victoria's new prohibition of conversion practices legislation.  We recommend you listen to our earlier ep, Criminalising Conversion Practices here: https://open.spotify.com/episode/4XOPTadSnWLSPW9yyA6NAL?si=v1KhkU6XTzW4ZvNH4a-zAA, before you head into today's ep to make sure you have all the background you need.  Today, we offer a commentary on the legislation to be, take a look at those for and against (hint: we can guarantee you'll be surprised where some pretty big organisations fall) and offer you our little humble opinions on it all in the hope it'll inspire (?) you to start talking about this with your friends and fam. Happy hump day ladies and gentlemen! What a Wednesday it is! After a few massive weeks, we have gone short and sweet today to talk about what you can and can't be asked in an interview. As we learned in our research, it is a super blurry and subjective topic (which means it is hard to definitively say that a line of questioning is unlawful or not allowable), but we give you some real world examples and talk about some techniques to use if an employer puts you on the spot!

Happy interviewing pals!

Oops, it's Thursday - sorry for the delay in releasing this week's ep but we PROMISE it was absolutely worth the wait. Today, we discuss a topic on the minds of many (if not all) Australians in light of the 26 January public holiday, 'Australia Day,' or 'Invasion Day.' There has been a lot of talk over the past decade or so about the offense and harm the date 26 January causes for our Indigenous Australians and First Nation people. In this episode, we take you through the two main historical narratives for 26 January, what it symbolises, the current stance of our politicians and leaders on the #ChangetheDate movement, where we both sit as non-Indigenous Australians (spoiler alert: we have quite the debate regarding the #ChangetheDate v #AbolishtheDate movements), and finally, we end with some really thoughtful and eloquent comments from Courtney Hagen, co-host of the podcast 'Coming Out Blak' who gives her perspective as an Indigenous Australian, talks to us about what 'Australia Day' represents for her, and gives us some super useful tools to help us all educate ourselves further on the history of our country and how we can be better allies to our Indigenous/First Nations community.

Well well well, it seems Donald Trump's infamous quote from The Apprentice has come back to bite him on the bum...twice (side note, who gave a reality TV star the presidency and why?). This week, we again jump across the pond to the US to tackle the Capitol siege, Trump's subsequent impeachment and the upcoming Inauguration Day. We have brought back our resident American Benjy Renton for some punchy critique as well as a newcomer on the block, Alexis Arnold (spoiler: you are going to love her). Alexis gives us a lengthy explanation of the Capitol siege as well as her incredibly moving comparison of this riot to the BLM protests in June.

Thank you to Benjy and Alexis for their insight. If you want to hear more from Alexis (I know we absolutely do), follow her new podcast Journeys to Journos on Twitter @j2j_podcast, talking about making it as an American journalist.

Merry Christmas and a happy new year to you all! Wow, 2021 and you can bet we're starting off with a bang!

For the very first week of the new year we are bringing you your introduction to the wonderful world of consumer law and your consumer rights (yay!).

We do this by breaking down contracts and contractual terms generally then move onto what constitutes an unfair contractual term before diving head first into all things gym contracts at approx. 16 mins (spoiler alert: your new year, new me gym that locks you in for 56 years and doesn't give you the option to cancel like ever is probably considered unfair and you can in fact get out of it).

Happy listening lovely people!

Well well well, it is the last Tuesday before Christmas and we are a bit shocked by that. Anyone else feel like they have lost a month or seven? Most importantly, of course, it is pod day! This week we bring you not only your weekly dose of the boring stuff, but also a year in review! 2020, the year that left us speechless (listen to find out why). We also take a deep dive on your leave entitlements - what different types there are, who gets them and can you cash them in? We seem to talk about that last one a lot.

From the bottom of our little nerdy hearts, thank you for all the support this year. We are heading into 2021 bright eyed and bushy tailed, with so many ideas we might just burst. Intelligent conversations are so important to us and after a quick pause, we cannot wait to jump right back into them.

A big hello to Tuesday and an even bigger hello to our two-month pod anniversary! Today’s milestone episode will NOT disappoint because today, dear friends, today we take you through the legal framework of the sex work industry in Victoria, compare it to other States and Territories in Australia, talk the issues in its operation, future reforms AND have the lovely Chloe* on to chat with us. Chloe is a current sex worker who gives her perspective on the practicality of the current laws in place and what they look like in reality. She takes us through a day in the life as a sex worker and provides us with a really educational and insightful understanding of sex work from someone in the field.

We were hanging off Chloe’s every word and can’t wait to bring this really clarifying look into the sex work industry, free from the stigma that usually shrouds it. We were surprised by the heartwarming and authentic look Chloe gave us into her life and her work-family! A quick content warning however, this interview discusses issues of sexual assault and may be distressing to some listeners.

SURPRISE! Bite-Sized Bits are officially back after a short hiatus (yay). This week's Bite-Sized gives a super simple (and quick) run down of what the heck criminal law is, the different types of criminal offences (summary vs indictable), and takes you through a generic and simple example of the timeline/steps in a straightforward low-level criminal proceeding. Enjoy pals!

PS After listening to this ep, you are set to listen to this week's main ep, "Drink, Drank, Drunk!" Get ready to relive some of your more questionable nights out and drunken decisions...

Well somehow it is Tuesday again, which means we are gracing your ears with another episode! This week we bring you a humdinger of a show, chatting offences you can be charged with on a night out (spoiler: yes, we are looking at you...we see you peeing in the alleyway across from Yah Yah's on a Saturday night and no, it's not legal!). Of course, we sneak in some social commentary at the end about decriminalising the offence of public drunkenness. We say this every week, but this might be our favourite one yet. Happy listening folks!

Hooray, it’s Tuesday!

This week we’re switching up our usual episode framework for a topic very close to our hearts and at the forefront of our current news cycle, the ‘gag laws’ and #LetUsSpeak movement. In this episode, we step you through the entire saga – from the introduction of the ‘gag laws’ in February 2020, their intended purpose and their actual consequences in practice, to the powerful Jamie-Lee Page and #LetUsSpeak campaign, and finally, what the law is as of 18 November 2020.

We are so proud to be able to bring you this episode and (slightly scathing) commentary on our legal system which fails so often, but is always picked up and improved by the people moving within it.

Content warning: this episode discusses issues of sexual assault and may be distressing for some listeners.

If this episode brings up any issues for you, or if you feel like you want to speak to someone, please call one of the following services:

Jokes aside, tune in to learn about leases, landlord/tenant obligations and how to apply to keep a furry friend (and a rogue conversation about alcoholic beverages?).

Tuesday already?! YAY!

Today we bring you a very different episode to usual, an interview with American Journalist Benjy Renton who talks us through the bizarre American election process, why some people's votes "matter" more than others, and the hope that comes with a Biden presidency (amongst many other things). This was something special and we are so grateful to be able to bring it to you all. Enjoy!

Welcome to In The Know, a podcast hosted by Caitlin Dagher and Samara Delmenico.

While studying law, we’ve realized the legal system saturates everything we do but not many people actually know how it operates.

Each week, we will be dropping a podcast chatting about an issue that we think you should know about, and usually we would like to know ourselves. See you soon!
