Your disciple making needs 3 things: Process, Community, and Responsibility.
In disciple making we are not only looking for followers of Jesus, but followers of Jesus who want to lead in the work of the Kingdom of Jesus. In this episode we discuss the need for a process of disciple making that creates environments of responsibility, rather than simply stopping at content retention.
Movement is simply more people learning to do simple affective habits. In the world of the head, heart, and hands of the multiplying church and her leaders, we will never move beyond the affective habit of seed sowing the gospel.
Start a habit. Track if that habit is affecting the change you expected. Adjust. Invite others to join you in that habit. Add time and you will affect movement.
In this podcast episode, Mark discusses the importance of tracking in order to assess progress towards the goal of reaching every place with the gospel. Tracking helps leaders assess how they are doing and develop a strategy for their context. We need to track the right things -- Mark mentions three key metrics he uses in his context: gospel shares, baptisms, and churches. Every single leader will face it. Every single leader will develop a response, but how we respond determines if we go the distance. This episode is about mourning and our critical need to learn to mourn if we are going to develop God's design to respond to life's challenges. The alternative is that we get taken out because of addiction or bitterness and don't finish the race. Time to lean in and learn how!
Leadership by its very nature is about making decisions to lead others in the midst of uncertainty. How do leaders do this and what happens as they do? In this episode, Dave and Mark unpack decision making and the implications of the blood, sweat, and tears that will come simply because people are involved.
"Look at Jesus to learn how to make disciples. Look at Paul to learn how to plant churches." The Book of Acts was clearly written as a model and not just a historical account. How should we faithfully read and apply it, then, in light of of the fact that the leaders modeling the methods in it were flawed, eg. Peter was a racist and Paul wasn't perfect. Prayer is always correlated to the advancement of the Kingdom to new people and new places. Urban Centers are as old as the Tower of Babel and God's strategy revealed in the redemption of that story as found in Acts 2:36-47 is still what He is doing today. In this episode, Mark shares 3 lessons he is learning about reaching urban centers: (1) People are God's strategy (2) The Elephant must be bite-sized, and (3) It's going to take a miracle.
Dave continues to share his story leaning into the reality of what happens when the image is distorted in God's image bearers, but their attempts cannot thwart the mission of God. He will be glorified and his glory will fill the earth through his image bearers because God has declared it so.
Dave returns to the Emmaus Road to look at the glory of God in the gospel. As Dave unpacks this moment: "we are not talking about a side-show event or a second chair fiddle: the proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ is the focus after the resurrection of Jesus."
