Field of Dreams 2021: The Gonzalez family talks about the movie and MLB game
On this special Podcast, all of BLD's hosts make an appearance to talk about MLB's highly successful, and emotional, Field of Dreams game (Aug. 12, 2021) featuring the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox. John Gonzalez (the dad) and his sons -- Zak, Ty and Zane -- all gather together in different parts of the country to watch the game. They talk about their family trip and memories from 2006 when they visited the field in Dyersville, Iowa. They reflect on the movie's staying power even after all these years. The boys were all born after the movie's release. If you haven't listened to many episodes of Big League Dreaming, this Podcast gives you an idea of this family's passion for the sport of baseball. Follow them on Twitter and TikTok, and be sure to subscribe to their YouTube channel.
On this Podcast, John Gonzalez talks to Axios sports reporter Jeff Tracy about the dwindling numbers for Little League baseball, which peaked in the 1990s. Jeff says the "professionalization" of youth sports, including the proliferation of travel baseball, has led to the decreased interest in Little League. As these players get ready to showcase their skills on the Little League World Series stage, which is broadcast by ESPN in primetime, this Podcast takes a closer look at the cultural change in America. Big League Dreaming Podcast co-host and pitching/recruiting coach at Indiana University - South Bend, Zane Gonzalez, was not able to be on the show, but made these observations:
"I think the biggest issue today is that everyone thinks travel is the end all be all for youth baseball today," Zane Gonzalez said. "It's basically like saying if you're not playing AAU basketball, you're not that good. Unfortunately travel baseball has become extremely watered down, even at the high school level. I'm starting to see more and more teams that are loaded with kids from the same two or three high schools, opposed to just five years ago when teams covered a large region. Travel ball is slowly turning into Little League with teams being located from one community.
"I'm not sure if it's because the idea of traveling to different areas and states to play is more attractive than playing at your same local park week in and week out. I don't think the number of kids playing is dropping off tremendously, but the number of Little League players is going to keep going down with this newfound desire for parents wanting their kids to have experiences they didn't have. It's basically the evolution of baseball in front of us."

On this episode, Jim Callis, senior writer at MLB Pipeline and MLB.com, talks about this year's 2021 MLB Draft, especially MLB's goal to create more excitement surrounding the All-Star Game. He says that California HS SS Marcelo Mayer is likely to be the No. 1 pick to the Pittsburgh Pirates, but then it's up in the air. He said it's possible the Texas Rangers will take celebrated Vanderbilt pitcher Jack Leiter at No. 2, leaving the Detroit Tigers to select Jackson Jobe, a high school RHP from Oklahoma City. But drafts are unpredictable, so anything can happen, he adds. On the Podcast, BLD's John and Zak Gonzalez ask if the Detroit Tigers, a team loaded with young pitching arms, would pass on Leiter if he is available at No. 3. Callis said, yes. The Tigers would love Mayer if he is available at No. 3, but seem ready to take Jobe. Other topics include the Seattle Mariners' pick at No. 12 and whether one of the Top 10-ranked players in the draft would fall into that spot. Do prospects have to play on intense travel teams and high-profile tournaments to get noticed? And why it's important to have a winning mindset.

On this show, John and Zak Gonzalez of the BLD Podcast talk to Central Michigan University volunteer baseball coach Tom Winske. He has a great story. After leading the St. Norbert College (De Pere, Wisc.) baseball team for two decades where he accomplished a 444-278-1 record and several conference championships, as well as NCAA Division III world series appearances, the coach left his program in 2018 to pursue another dream. He became an assistant coach at DI Central Michigan University to help his former player, Jordan Bischel, return a former powerhouse in the Mid American Conference to better days. Almost instantly, the program returned to its winning ways, making CWS regional appearances in 2019 and 2021. The CMU team did it with a new level of team involvement, from cheering in the dugout to wearing a Yoda mask and even adopting a rally Pinata mascot. Listen to coach Winske talk about his dreams and how he has been blessed by baseball. On this episode of the Podcast, John Gonzalez talks to Detroit Tigers beat writer Jason Beck of MLB.com. They discuss the recent promotion of 2020 No. 1 draft pick Spencer Torkelson, as well as catching prospect Dillon Dingler, from High A West Michigan to AA Erie. Beck said on MLB.com: "The promotions put Detroit’s top three offensive prospects -- and three of the Tigers’ top four prospects -- in Erie, teaming Torkelson and Dingler with outfielder Riley Greene. Add in shortstop Ryan Kreidler, who shares the team lead with six home runs, and four of Detroit’s top 21 prospects will be in the same formidable lineup." Dwyer comes to the team with a long pedigree in baseball, having coached high school, JUCO, D1 as well as professional baseball. Eric Haase, a seventh round pick for the Cleveland Indians in 2011, is finally getting a chance to play regularly with his hometown Detroit Tigers. A former Mr. Baseball from Dearborn Divine Child HS, the Westland native has made a big impact after being called up a few weeks ago. He helped the Tigers with a win over the Seattle Mariners by hitting two HRs, then the next night was on the receiving end as the catcher for Spencer Turnbull’s no hitter on May 18. On this Podcast we talk to Dan Deegan, his former High School coach about what it was like coaching a young player with so much drive and determination.
Bottom of the 9th Breakdown: Detroit Tigers pitcher Spencer Turnbull (second round, 63rd overall, 2014) recorded the 8th no-hitter in Tigers history, and the first since Justin Verlander's feat on May 7, 2011 in Toronto. In his 5-0 win over the Mariners in Seattle (May 18, 2021), Turnbull gave up 2 walks, and threw 117 pitches, 77 for strikes. In the Bottom of the 9th he faced Mitch Haniger, the Seattle Mariners most consistent hitter, and struck him out on three straight pitches. The last pitch was a 95 mph four-seam fastball up in the zone. It was the first time in his career that he pitched into the 8th inning. Catching was Eric Haase, who was the hero in the Tigers' win on May 17. He played LF and hit 2 HRs.
John and Zak Gonzalez talk to Scott Kornberg, the Broadcaster and Media and Public Relations Manager for the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, Triple-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins. On this episode, Zane (LHP, Comstock Park, Mich.) talks about being the youngest of the Gonzalez boys, which wasn’t a bad thing. He saw his brothers as mentors, who taught him the finer points of the game. He said it made him a student of the game. After a successful career at Comstock Park High School, where he set many pitching records, he followed his brother Ty’s path and played for coach Cody Piechocki at Kalamazoo Valley Community College. Having great success on the mound as a starting pitcher, he went on to play at Indiana University-South Bend. He struggled a bit to find his groove his junior year, but still put up decent numbers as a starter and reliever. After a coaching change, Coach Doug Bussey used him exclusively as a reliever, and was counted on to be the team's closer, which sometimes meant getting last out or pitching the last three innings. He was a team co-captain because of his leadership on the field. During his time at IUSB, Zane also played summer ball in the Northwoods Collegiate wood bat league as a pitcher for the Kalamazoo Growlers. Despite having a degree in sports journalism, he decided to pursue a career in coaching after his playing days. He worked as a GA for two seasons at Rio Grande University in Rio Grande, Ohio. He also returned to Kalamazoo as the pitching coach for the Growlers. After getting a Masters degree in Coaching and Leadership, he returned to IUSB as the pitching coach for Coach Bussey. His goal is to remain a student of the game and one day lead his own program. He is a dedicated fan of the Boston Red Sox. He also is the only Gonzalez to be interviewed on ESPN and Intentional Talk.
On this episode, Ty (RHP/utility, Comstock Park, Mich.) talks about being inspired to follow his dreams from the day he was born. In fact, he knew all his Major League teams and nicknames before his ABCs. True story. His signature is his work ethic. He’s that kid you always hear about, the one who shows up early, stays late and eats, dreams and sleeps baseball. After a successful career at Comstock Park High School, he went on to play two years at Kalamazoo Valley Community College. Recruited as a “Pitcher Only” he saw limited action as a freshman. But when he finally got a chance his sophomore year, he made it count. He went on to become the team’s MVP as a starting pitcher and position player. He played almost every position, except for CF and SS. He opted not to continue at a four-year school, rather, he wanted to focus on his music career as a hip hop artist. He wrote and recorded his own music, and he toured and played festivals. In fact, his CD, “Big League Dreaming,” inspired this Podcast. He coached briefly high school baseball. But today he works full time for a Grand Rapids-based manufacturing company. He and his wife, Katie, launched a successful YouTube channel a few years ago, which has more than 70,000 subscribers. He's a dedicated New York Mets fan. He’s the classic middle child.
On this episode, Zak (LHP, Comstock Park, Mich.) talks about being inspired to follow his dreams when playing for a travel baseball team in Lansing, Michigan. He saw his game elevate, and he then put all his energy into making it to professional baseball. After a successful career at Comstock Park High School, he played two years at Jackson Community College as a starting pitcher where the team set records for wins and had incredible success. He went on to Davenport University where he was a reliever. He realized his low 80s, pitch to contact fastball wasn’t going to get him drafted, but remained dedicated to a life in baseball. He worked in operations for the West Michigan Whitecaps and Myrtle Beach Pelicans, and also found time to coach travel baseball, college club baseball and teach pitching lessons. He also worked briefly for the Richmond Flying Squirrels. Now working in college admissions and based in Charlotte, N.C., he works part time doing video for the Charlotte Knights. He and his wife Helen have two young daughters. He's a dedicated Seattle Mariners fan. He is also the oldest son.
On this special episode, the Gonzalez family gives a shout out to Pam Gonzalez. A fan of the game who had has always been supportive of her son’s dreams, and husband’s passion. She knows more about baseball than the average fan.
