Hello dear friends! Welcome to our brand new podcast dedicated to sight-reading. Why sight-reading? We want to show the behind-the-scenes of music-making. We begin each episode with our initial thoughts on a new score as well as musings about style, aesthetics, and instruments. We challenge ourselves to apply our understanding of historical practices to achieve a more musical reading of a given text. Whether you are amateur musicians looking for tips on sight-reading and insight into historical performance or a seasoned musician, we would be happy if you joined us.

Today I interview Catalina Vicens, Visiting Professor: harpsichord and research, curator of the San Colombano Museum and its famous collection of historical keyboard instruments.
Catalina is a specialist in a wide range.
Research, creativity and the wish to communicate have led Catalina Vicens to become one of the most sought-after historical keyboard performers and teachers today.
Since 2021 Vicens is director and curator of the Tagliavini Collection - Museo San Colombano, Bologna after devoting a solo and research career to the study of antique keyboard instruments. She is also recognized for her work with medieval and renaissance keyboards, working alongside instrument builders in the development of new prototypes based on historical sources. Her work alongside composers has given a new life to historical instruments.
Catalina is Guest Professor for harpsichord and research at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. She has been invited as Visiting Professor of Harpsichord at Oberlin Conservatory and to teach master-classes at the Curtis Institute of Music Philadelphia, the Juilliard School of Music New York, Longy School of Music Cambridge, UC Berkeley and the Flint Antique Harpsichords Collection, as well as in the Conservatories and Music Universities of Vienna, St Andrews, Berlin and Essen, and teaches annually courses in Canada, Sweden, Germany and Switzerland. She’s been invited as jury member at the prestigious MA Festival Harpsichord Competition - Bruges, Jurow International Harpsichord Competition, Mechelen Harpsichord Competition, the Dulwich Historical Keyboard Competition and the Wanda Landowska Competition Poznań.
Vicens has given lectures at museums in Hamburg, Munich, Vermillion, Edinburgh as well as Universities of Vienna, Indiana, Warwick, Leiden, St Andrews, Berkeley, Rochester, Santiago de Chile and the Collège de France besides presenting papers at several international conferences.

Today I interview the Casulana Lute Consort. It is an Early Music ensemble based in Basel, Switzerland. The members met at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis and share the vision to revitalize lute consort music. Their repertoire ranges from Renaissance to early baroque music, and includes compositions by the lutenist, Madalena Casulana. She is the first female composer known today to have had her music published, and the consort is named after her.

Today I had an inspiring conversation with a Royal Academy professor, lutenist Elizabeth Kenny. We talked about the lecture she gave at the Basel lute Days conference. We tried to find a way to connect early music and its discourse with the modern reality of the #blacklifesmatter and #metoo movements, and how we should deal with the context of such different eras.
Elizabeth Kenny is one of Europe’s leading lute players. In twenty years of touring she has played with many of the world’s best period instrument groups and experienced many different approaches to music making. She played with Les Arts Florissants 1992-2007 and with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment 1997-2015 and still returns to initiate seventeenth century projects such as The Hypochondriack and A Restoration Tempest.

As a soloist she is committed to a diverse range of repertoire, from the ML Lutebook (a much-praised CD released on Hyperion records)to new music for lute and theorbo: she has premiered works by James MacMillan, Heiner Goebbels and Benjamin Oliver, and these will be recorded alongside seventeenth century solo music for theorbo in October 2018 for Linn records. With Theatre of the Ayre she judged the National Centre for Early Music’s Composers’ Award in 2016.
Liz Kenny is Director of Performance at the University of Oxford, and professor of Lute at the Royal Academy of Music. she was Professor of Musical Performance and Head of Early Music at Southampton University 2009-18. She was an artistic advisor to the York Early Music Festival from 2011 to 2014.

Erik is a visiting professor at the Krakow Academy of Music in Poland and gives master classes all over the world. He also teaches the famous recorder class at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where he himself studied.
He is widely regarded as one of the most virtuosic recorder players in the world and certainly the most inspiring, with endless possibilities. His repertoire ranges from medieval music to Vivaldi's Four Seasons and the music of tomorrow. As a soloist, he is regularly invited to conduct the orchestra himself.

One may ask: How is the subject of historical dance related to the main theme of our podcast, namely sight-reading? In our humble opinion, this connection is close and long lasting, and is very much determined by the context of the period and its surroundings. And why? Today's episode is dedicated to the biblical story in which King David laments the death of his son Absalom. This plot and the piece "Fili mi Absalom" written by Heinrich Schütz are relevant to the latest reality and at the same time to the Passion story. Absalom, the third son of King David and his wife Maachah, seemed to have everything he wanted, but like other tragic figures in the Bible, he tried to take what was not his. Absalom's story is one of pride and greed, of a man who tried to thwart God's plan. Instead, his life ended in violent ruin. David was heartbroken over the death of his son, the man who had tried to kill him and steal his throne. He loved Absalom with all his heart. David's grief showed the deep love of a father over the loss of a son, as well as regret over his own personal failures that led to many family and national tragedies.
The motet "Fili mi Absalom" from the collection in 1629 Symphoniae sacrae I, Op.6 (No.13) was composed for a bass voice, 4 trombones and basso continuo. We talk with great musicians Johanna Bartz, Valerio Zanolli, Tin Cugelj, and Adrian King about the 17th century instrumentation tradition, the structure of this composition, and the possible interpretation of Madness and Mourning. We recorded this episode in January before the war in Ukraine, but we realised how relevant the music is to the new reality.

The score on the music stand for today is an early cantata by George Frideric Handel for voice, traverso or oboe and basso continuo.
George Frideric Handel (1685–1759) wrote at least three versions of the cantata to the text Mi palpita il cor. These were composed during the first years after he had established himself in England some time between 1710 and 1713. The musical material of the different versions corresponds only in parts.
The information found in sources appears to be rather complex. In the Händel Werke Verzeichnis(HWV) only four versions of the cantata are recorded (a-d) although at least six versions of the complete cantata as well as single arias exist. The various copies also show considerable differences and embellishments of which the origin is partly not known.

We met Alexis in Riehen and had a short interview with him in a cafe before his recording of Mozart Concertos, it was a very inspiring conversation! After that we met at the Schola Cantorum for a short sight-reading session of a Sonata for 2 flutes and Cembalo by Johann Sebastian Bach, BWV 1028, reconstructed by J. Bopp.
Born in Nice, Alexis Kossenko performs as a soloist with Deutsche Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Concerto Copenhagen, Ensemble Matheus, Philharmonie der Nationen, La Grande Ecurie et la Chambre du Roy, Concert d'Astrée, Stradivaria, Barokksolistene, B'Rock, Le Cercle de l'Harmonie, La Chambre Philharmonique, Modo Antiquo, Le Concert Lorrain, Holland Baroque Society, Helsinki Baroque Orchestra, in a repertoire ranging from Vivaldi to Khachaturian including Mozart concertos on tour with Emmanuel Krivine. He therefore recently performed in Berlin Philharmonie, Stockholm Philharmonie, Moscow Philharmonie, Franz Liszt Concert Hall in Budapest, Wigmore Hall and Royal Albert Hall in London, Mozarteum Salzburg, Théâtre des Champs-Elysées and Salle Gaveau in Paris, Opéra Royal and Chapelle Royale in Versailles, Ton-Halle in Zürich, Bruges and Amsterdam Concertgebouw. Fine connaisseur of all the historical forms of his instrument, Alexis Kossenko plays as well on the modern flute (he was awarded from Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris in the class of Alain Marion) as on baroque flute, classical and romantic flutes, or recorder. He is now first flautist of La Chambre Philharmonique (dir. Emmanuel Krivine), Ensemble Matheus (dir . Jean-Christophe Spinosi), Gli Angeli Genève (Stephan MacLeod), Le Concert Spirituel (Hervé Niquet) and from now Orchestre des Champs-Elysées (dir. Philippe Herreweghe), He recorded flute concertos by Nielsen, Telemann, Haydn, Touchemoulin, and specially, for French label Alpha, the complete concertos by CPE Bach, Vivaldi concertos (Editor's Choice de Gramophone) and Charpentier leçons de ténèbres with baryton Stephan MacLeod.
As a conductor, Alexis Kossenko was invited by European Union Baroque Orchestra, B'Rock, Le Concert d'Astrée, Holland Baroque Society, Arte dei Suonatori, Musica Viva Moscow ; But it is at the head of Les Ambassadeurs that he undertakes his most significant projects, such as the new series for Alpha « per l'orchestra di Dresda » as well as an intense work on Rameau, Purcell, CPE Bach and Mozart.

The focus of our interest in today's reading session is a beautiful flute or violin sonata H. 542.5 BWV 1020 that was for a long time attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach. We will try to discover the stylistic details and experiment with the instrumentation in this piece. A special instrument that we are using today is a copy of one of the first instruments that was created by Bartolomeo Cristofori, who was an Italian maker of musical instruments famous for inventing the piano. Today we are going to explore some flute duos by Jacques-Martin Hotteterre. He was and still remains an important figure in the flute world.
Hotteterre owed his fame largely to his talent for playing the flute, an instrument for which he wrote a number of pieces, significantly extending the repertory for the instrument. In addition, he played the bassoon, oboe and musette. Hotteterre was also an internationally celebrated teacher to aristocratic patrons. He wrote one method for the transverse flute, recorder, and oboe, published in 1707, as well as a method for the musette, published in 1737. His L'Art de préluder sur la flûte traversière was published in 1719. It was Europe's first flute manual and was used widely.
"The music of the modern flute begins with this author, the most celebrated flutist of the end of the seventeenth and the beginning of the eighteenth centuries. Hotteterre was Chamber Musician to the King of France, and was the first one to play a transverse flute in the orchestra of the Paris Grand Opera. This extremely rare work is the earliest known book of instructions, in any language, for the transverse flute."

Today's sight-reading session is dedicated to one of the icons of the high baroque era. Georg Philipp Telemann wrote his famous collection in 1733. More than 200 subscribers were found who were willing to pay the price in advance and whose name, social status, and address were published in the first edition. The illustrious list comprised crowned heads, noblewomen, and merchants as well as German and non-German musicians and composers – among others George Frideric Handel from London, Johann Georg Pisendel and Johann Joachim Quantz from Dresden and Michel Blavet from Paris.
Telemann, who was music director of Hamburg at the time of publication, wrote:

Today's guest of our podcast is the "foreign virtuoso Locatelli".

He was quite an outstanding figure in the 18th century. Some contemporaries left a notice about Locatelli's performance before Frederick William I, which anecdotally describes the musician's self-assurance and his vanity in wearing gorgeous, diamond-studded clothes. Nevertheless a library with over a thousand documents shows Locatelli's interest in literature and science. It includes ornithological, theological, church historical, political, geographical, art historical and mathematical works, and literature on music theory dating back to the 16th century.
This man was not that simple and the flute sonata that we are going to sight-read for you today confirms our opinion.
