Their instruments boast high reusability, resulting in low per-procedure costs and setting industry standards. In contrast to typical 7.5 to 8-millimeter robotic instruments, LUNA's five-millimeter instruments are best-in-class, crucial for converting traditional laparoscopic procedures to minimally invasive ones. Notably, Asensus leads the way with the Intelligent Surgical Unit (ISU), offering real-time interoperative video and data access, replacing outdated methods like sterile measuring tapes, and opening up a world of clinical possibilities. * [10:10] - Surgical robots come in various types, each specialized for specific medical purposes. Future robots may serve only one or two segments of surgery. Examples include endovascular steerable catheter and bronchoscopy robots, as well as neurosurgery, spine, and orthopedic robots. Some procedures are image-guided, while others use telemanipulation. Fully autonomous soft tissue surgery is still challenging due to anatomical variations, making spine and orthopedic surgeries more amenable to autonomy. However, it's vital to address concerns around privacy and cybersecurity. Fortunately, the FDA has taken steps to regulate the use of AI in medical devices. Their requirements include rigorous testing with specific datasets to ensure consistent performance, as well as a clear statement of the intended use for each AI algorithm in specific procedures. The FDA also distinguishes between "closed" and "open" algorithms. Closed algorithms are fixed, while open ones can adapt to new procedures. * [24:00] - Caleb envisions the future of robotic surgery, where technology and expertise are seamlessly integrated. Surgeons will use robots in the operating room and confidently present the system to patients, creating trust in their skills and the robot's capabilities. To make this happen, extensive training and ongoing support will be essential. Additionally, robotic systems will integrate well with other medical devices, creating an interconnected operating room. This collaboration, especially between the robot and anesthesia technology, will improve patient outcomes. This complexity can inhibit their ability to care for patients effectively. For surgeons working with multiple robotic systems, while login procedures may vary, core interactions like tissue manipulation should be kept consistent. As technology advances, we should shift competition towards innovative features. This parallels how backup cameras became standard in cars. Additionally, we can provide hospitals with resources for patients, such as simplified simulators to build trust between patients and surgeons.

And other big tech companies like Microsoft, Adobe, and Google are implementing their own versions, or they've accepted the technology and started to build with it themselves. For every major technology company, you can see elements of generative AI. For example, DALL-E, Stable Diffusion, and Midjourney are shaking up the design and art space. * [00:26:04] - Stanford has said that "these new forms of generative AI have the capacity to change how we think, create, teach, and learn. They may also change our perspective on what is important to learn." There is an unlimited number of generative AI use cases across a wide variety of industries, helping them go from zero to one faster. * [00:39:21] - Generative AI still faces many limitations, such as the high cost of use and turning it into a service, the number of queries you can run, technical constraints, and unreliable or biased outputs. But the industry evolves fast, and most of these limitations could be overcome shortly. * [00:48:20] - Change itself is exponential, and most people have no idea what it means. Even for someone in this field, it's hard to understand where things are headed and what the future will look like. So looking ten years into the future, at this point, it's almost impossible to predict the magnitude of change. However, we can be sure that change will happen, generative AI will evolve, and we have to keep pace with this shift. * [00:56:41] -* Generative AI is a technology that can create and disseminate more value among people, leading to an overall increase in the economy. While it may displace or transform some jobs, it will also create new opportunities. Dr. David Leonardi, Founder of the Leonardi Institute, joins Jeff Dance to discuss the future of aging, including approaches to prevent and reverse age-related diseases, the difference between aging and vitality, and lifestyle habits to slow the aging process. They Cover:
* [00:06:56] The scientific aspect of aging involves changes in DNA and the epigenome that cause debility within cells as well as the top causes of death today, which are coronary heart disease and stroke followed by cancer. Coronary disease and cancer account for about sixty-seven percent of mortality. * [00:11:12] The classic approach to disease was to look at a single one and reverse it after it's already been established. A much better way focuses on altering chemical pathways before people get sick so that they can delay or potentially indefinitely prevent diseases from occurring while maintaining their vitality instead of getting debilitated before death. That is where the scientists are focused right now. * [00:12:32] When you talk to people about living beyond 100 years old, many immediately picture an ancient person with a three-foot-long beard sitting in a wheelchair in a nursing home. When you slow the aging process, you maintain your healthy lifespan. The scientist's plan for aging is to retain our youth instead of getting debilitated before death so people can enjoy a healthy and active life. * [00:21:27] An alternative version of recent breakthroughs in reversing aging is the information theory of aging proposed by David Sinclair. According to this theory, aging is not caused by defects in our genes but rather by changes in the epigenome, which is how our genes are wound around each other. One of Sinclair's students, Yingling Liu, experimented with the Yamanaka factors to reverse aging in mice. However, this resulted in the development of cancer. To address this issue, Yingling eliminated one of the Yamanaka genes responsible for cancer and used the other three to transform old cells into pluripotent stem cells, which did not result in cancer. * [00:34:09] To slow the aging process, Dr. Leonardi suggests a low glycemic diet with minimal sweets and starches, plant-based proteins, and fats. He also encourages people to avoid toxins such as saturated fats and trans fats, limit exposure to air pollution, regularly exercise, use nutritional supplements that affect pathways like AMPK (Adenosine Monophosphate Kinase), intermittent fasting to activate AMPK without caloric restriction, NAD chemical messages out from the nucleus to invigorate mitochondria, autophagy, and mitophagy which involve recycling old proteins into active, healthy compounds for use in cells. Dr. Leonardi emphasizes having clean drinking water by using reverse osmosis filters to filter out toxic minerals like iron, copper, mercury, and cadmium from drinking water.

* [00:03:07] Micah is a visionary leader that leads pragmatically. He states that many tech companies fail because they are too operationally focused or have a product the market won’t accept for the next five or six years. At NEC, he tries to build a hyper-focused consumer culture and create privacy and consent-focused products and services that will make people's lives easier. * [00:06:06] People are familiar with biometrics like fingerprinting and facial biometrics to access smartphones. When we talk about advanced biometrics, there are two factors to consider. Firstly, biometric tech in labs has tremendous accuracy. But the second aspect is how we get biometrics because you need something to capture it. So we're seeing new techniques, like photoacoustic imaging, which works through lasers and ultrasound. The future of advanced biometrics brings various applications, including contactless fingerprints, which will create a more device less world. * [00:11:06] NEC technology helped identify the Boston bomber. Regarding government and security, the company helps do the biometric matching for Border Patrol to ensure that the person entering the US is the same person on the passport. In the aviation industry, we see more of the so-called "ticketless journey." For example, Delta has multiple gates where you can board with just your face. Thanks to advanced biometrics, we'll see an outgrowth in protection against fraud. * [00:18:38] When consumers hear biometrics, there are multiple ethical concerns. It's one of the barriers for the market to accept this technology. One of the NEC's core pillars is responsible growth, which stands for improving the lives of citizens and consumers but not at the detriment of unethical business practices. * [00:26:51] People should be able to do 90% of their daily activities without needing devices, and NEC is working to make it a reality. For example, ten or twenty years from now, when you open your car or get coffee, you can use your face or another biometric to conduct the transaction without a physical wallet or phone.

Robotics is the discipline of engineering that deals with the idea, design, building, operation, application, and usage of robots. Robots are incredibly adaptable devices, as proven by the great variety of forms and functions they can perform. I think is near and dear to a lot of our hearts is robotics and automation are augmenting human labor and using robots to whether it's the mundane or the thing I think is near and dear to a lot of our hearts is robotics and automation is augmenting human labor and using robots to whether it's the mundane or the thing bringing robotics in to help accomplish tasks because one of the biggest challenges we face in labor works.

It's actually that we don't have enough labor for the amount of construction that needs to get done. Augmentation allows us to get more done in an era where we're going to be challenged to find enough people to build what we need to build.

Amanda Marrs, Sr. Director at AMP Robotics, reveals how AMP is developing high-tech waste recycling solutions to help create a more sustainable future. Jeff and Amanda take a glimpse at the waste recycling industry—touching on everything from the process of recycling materials and promising technology to international trends and logistical challenges.

They Cover:
[00:08:09] Where does that water bottle go after you throw it in the bin? Amanda describes the physical process of recycling with an example. After the bottle arrives at the processing plant, it's pre-sorted by people, sorted by a cardboard screen, and separated. The ultimate goal is to melt down the plastic to make new products.

[00:16:11] Amanda discusses her dream for the future: a world without waste. She envisions a circular economy, where products and packages are designed for recyclability first. Doing that will take patience, a lot of data, and economic incentives.

[00:23:13] What will drive change in the next ten to twenty years? Amanda's short answer is—Data. Data. Data. Aggregating local data with national trends yields powerful insights. She explains that data and infrastructure will give enhance analytics capabilities in the next ten years. She says that the speed of change depends on whether economic incentives are "carrots or sticks."

[00:27:04] Countries in Europe, like the Netherlands, are leading the way in terms of sustainability, but North America is catching up. Amanda mentions that she is working with some big CPG companies in North America that are make huge strides toward sustainability goals.

[00:28:38] The dos and don'ts of recycling. Amanda talks about how to dispose of pumpkins, why you shouldn't crush a soda can, and where to put your compost. She also gives tips on how to get involved in the community and your favorite brands.
