Barnaby Howarth knows something about everyday greatness. A former AFL player for the Sydney Swans, the author of two books, a widow, and an in-demand inspirational speaker living with diabetes, Barnaby began Everyday Greatness to highlight the hero in all of us.
“Shaping culture” sounds like an old person's game, but culture comes from the accumulation of attitudes from everybody in any group, and it is largely Sophie Fawn's attitude that has got her to be a superstar netball in Australia's top competition. A country girl from Wagga Wagga, her journey to Suncorp Super netball was rife with challenges - Traveling to Sydney from Wagga was tough, but add to that some of her most formative years were during covid-19 lockdown, then in the middle of her HSC her mother - Maureen - died from ovarian cancer. Thriving in tough situations seems to be just how Sophie rolls, but in just keeping her head down and concentrating on the next step in front of her, she is doing more than she probably realises in shaping the culture of Australian netball.
If there is ever an epidemic of people releasing pigs onto the Sydney Cricket Ground during Swans games, the person you would want to employ to find the culprits would be somebody who has previously released a pig onto the SCG. The same goes for who you would want to employ to understand how elite sports people think, and what drives them to be better, and the Sydney Swans have done exactly that with my guest this week on Everyday Greatness - clinical psychologist - Suzie Rhydderch
Being proud of who you are is not something everybody is blessed with - some people are just flat out struggling, but it is a lot easier to be proud of yourself with a community of people around you who appreciate the effort you are putting in and let you know they are proud of you. On this episode, Barnaby will speak to Walkley award, winning journalist and queer content lead at the ABC Mon Schafter & Head of the Rainbow Swans – Sarina Jackson and we will talk about how they are helping people find pride in the REAL you.
This episode we will find out if being nice without question is enough to get a person ahead in today's ruthless world or, if you need to be a ruthless, win at all costs toolbox to further your own nest.
Guests: Anita Murphy - Manager – Customer Operations, Sydney Swans.
Diane Williams-Harapin - CEO – Australian College of Perioperative Nurses / Kenny and Yvonne's daughter.
The cafe at Sydney Swans HQ is staffed by Shaun Christie-David's Plate it Forward, and on this episode we will chat about how food can be used to create a more inclusive society.
Guests: Liz Ponitka (Head of Facility, Sydney Swans) & Shaun Christie-David (CEO & Founder – Plate It Forward)
Understanding who he was as an aboriginal Australian helped Adam Goodes flourish and he became one of the greatest AFL footballers of all time, and now the Sydney Swans - alongside naming rights sponsor the ARA group - are recreating that environment where Adam discovered himself, through the First Nations Foundation - a 10-week holistic sporting program that incorporates both football skills training as well as character development and cultural lessons. I will talk to managing director of the ARA group – Edward Federman & former Sydney Swan and managing director of ARA indigenous services Michael O'Loughlin about why helping aboriginal Australian kids is so important in this country
When the Sydney Swans wanted to create a new home for themselves that was an inclusive space for EVERYBODY they needed expert help, so they reached out to Populous - a design firm with over 40 years experience – and they sent in the big guns – senior principle Warrick Chalmers... In this episode, Warrick and Barnaby will sit down with COO of the Sydney Swans – Drew Arthurson and talk about how Swans HQ was created to be an inclusive space for all.
Guests: Alana Woodward and Kate Mahony
A headline in the guardian in 2017 following a weekend of professional women’s AFL football read: AFLW: big crowds, tough play and irate fans – footy just as we know and love it. Women’s sport – not just AFLW – has made the international sporting landscape a new exciting and achievable world for young girls, but nobody just clicked their fingers & made it magically happen – huge amounts of work has been done by some incredible people over the years to get us to where we are today, and the girls and women’s football programs at the Sydney Swans show just how much hard work, commitment and good planning has gone into women’s sport to make it the shining light that it is today.
Is the REAL you good enough? Sometimes a GOOD, HONEST life is better than the PERFECT life.
Guest: Ben Mathews - Sydney Swans Assistant Coach and 2005 Premiership Player
Success at the Sydney Swans Football Club has largely been attributed to the Bloods Culture that was implemented in 2003. But on this episode we take a look at the club’s success through a different lens - as an accumulation of all of the hard work everybody who has touched the place for over 150 years is put back into it.d sacrifice.
Diversity and Inclusion in the workplace exists to help businesses tap into ALL of the power of EVERY employee, regardless of who they are or where they come from. Glass ceilings are being shattered in every industry by once quiet groups of people, but while EVERYBODY is getting opportunities these days, is EVERYBODY'S voice being heard? On episode 3 of Everyday Greatness, we will be talking to the Diversity & Inclusion Lead for Music & Creative Development at the ABC, Karla Ranby, and Principal Consultant of Diversity & Inclusion at Symmetra (SUH-MET-TRA), about what value they have seen from employees whose voices previously haven't been heard. To listen – go to wherever you get your podcasts and look for "the Everyday Greatness podcast" and the episode titled "Diversity and inclusion in the workplace – is EVERYBODY'S voice being heard?"– or if you are interested in sponsoring the show, go to the Everyday Greatness page at www.Barnabyhowarth.com
Water sometimes gets dirty if it has been raining for a long time, so to clean the water you need to filter it for an equally long period of time – Sometimes it feels like it is harder to clean it that it was to make it dirty… And the same goes with racism in Australia – What has been a murky, grubby water supply for a long time has had a lot of good people try and filter out the gunk, and today – while there are still dirty patches, some people say the water is getting clean enough to drink. On episode 2 of Everyday Greatness, we will talk to some of those good people who have been trying to filter the water - Australia medallist and co-founder of Yalari – Walter Stanley AM - who acknowledges that his successes in life were shaped by the education he received as a kid, so in 2005, along with his wife Liew, he founded Yalari - which offers similar opportunities for Indigenous children from regional and remote communities. We will also talk to former Sydney Swans captain Brett Kirk, who - when his former teammate – Adam Goodes – started getting booed by AFL crowds largely just because he is aboriginal, used his platform as a professional sports person to try and stamp out racism. We will also talk to Lowanna Grant – the daughter of Stan Grant. Lowanna has witnessed firsthand some of the dangerous work done by people like her father to try and make Australia as fair for indigenous Australians as it is for those of European heritage, and we will see if she thinks the racism water in Australia is clear enough to drink yet. To listen – go to wherever you get your podcasts and look for "the Everyday Greatness podcast" and the episode titled "Cleaning the dirty racism water in Australia"– or if you are interested in sponsoring the show, go to the Everyday Greatness page at www.Barnabyhowarth.com
The fight for equality for LGBTQIA+ people has always been proud, but not always smooth. A lot of brave people have done a lot of brave work which has made today's world a safer, more comfortable place for young LGBTQIA+ folks. On episode 1 of Everyday Greatness, we will talk to the Founder and Chair of ABC pride and former President of Dykes on Bikes – Manda Hatter & ABC news producer Cameron Nicholls - Cameron was reluctant to come on the show as he said his life as a young gay man was "pretty smooth" and didn't think he had much of a story to tell. But the fact that a young gay man's life today is "pretty smooth" is a story worth telling.
When the world tries to fight for your rights, some people still prefer to take care of their responsibilities.
Andrew J Kelly is a modern leader – he is the CEO of the Antarctic Science Foundation, was the head of fundraising for the Children's Medical Research Institute at Westmead Hospital, and started his career with 8 years in the banking industry while also competing in road cycling.
