I got a crash course on watershed management in about 20 minutes. If you know nothing about the management of water as a resource in a rural landscape, this would be well worth listening to in and of itself.
Further, I chatted about the use of technology and how it is changing the manner in which interventions are rolled out in rural India today.
I learnt a lot in the process.

Recycling is often brought up as a panacea to the global climate challenge. What really goes into the business and how challenging it is to scale a business of this nature is hard for most of us to fathom.
I had the privilege of speaking with Mr Prassann Daphal, CEO of RecycleKaro which is one of the biggest recycling companies in India. It was an illuminating conversation about the genesis of their business as well as the evolution of recycling in India.
The company is currently focused on recycling the vast hoards of electronic waste that gets generated.

I spoke with Shreya Nath of WELL Labs to understand what took her from being an Architect to leading the Urban Water Program at WELL Labs and what she does there.
This conversation ranges from the structure of our cities to how water is accessed and provided to each of the residents to how we dispose of this water and finally what role policy could play in changing behaviour.
In the process, I learnt that Bangalore has the largest number of decentralised sewage treatment plants in the world. What we do with our sewage and our rainwater and what we should probably aspire to do.

The cause and effect that economics predicts does not seem to be playing out in the real world. Something fundamental has changed in the nature of work and the structure of societies. Banks are not the main source of debt for the ultra-rich and the ultra-poor, hence tweaking bank interests makes no difference!
Under these circumstances, the old theories of economics do not work. We need to go back and take another look at all of them.

I used to think dust was mud breaking down but it seems to be originating from sources that are even more human than I had earlier assumed. One of the biggest sources of dust is vehicles, not the exhaust but the tyres that they run on which disintegrate at increasing speed. The health repercussions are incredible!

Driverless taxis have been in the offing for a very long time and we have stopped taking them seriously. When you least expect something to become a force in the industry, it most likely does become one. Driverless cars seem to be at that tipping point.
The problem no longer seems to be technology but people’s behaviour.

Our body has an insanely powerful immune system. Most of the time when it is fighting against possible invaders, you do not even come to know that it has fought off invaders.
Our homes, environment and even our bodies are being sterilised more and more often as we have developed this fear of germs. This leaves our immune system with nothing to do but to turn on the body itself.

Insulin grew into a big business as the number of cases of diabetes ballooned across the globe. Diabetes was the first disease that was termed a lifestyle disease. Obesity is the reverse. It is often a problem amongst the poor who cannot afford high-quality foods and end up eating a lot of ultra-processed foods.
A drug is offering hope and billing itself as a solution to the problem. Its popularity has soared and caused the company that manufactures it to be valued more than the country in which it resides. This is the story of Wegovy and Novo Nordisk.

In this episode, I summarise two books that I recently read on the causes of Obesity. The Obesity Code written by Dr Jason Fung and Ultraprocessed People written by Chris van Tulleken. The two books play into each other with the obesity theme being central to both of them. This made it all the more interesting for me.
Obesity is not a result of a person’s inability to control oneself, it is a result of food being engineered in such a fashion that it promotes higher consumption. People who fall prey to this are the victims and not the villains.

Media organisations across the globe want Google and Meta to compensate them each time a user clicks on links to these organisations. People across the Internet have named it the Link Tax. Lawmakers who have been lobbied are beginning to pursue this idea as well. Australia enacted the law in 2021 and Canada enacted on this year. Both companies played ball in 2021 but no longer seem to be willing to do that.

The pandemic delivered a body blow to commercial real estate in many large cities. The white-collar workers who used to work in many of these cities have transitioned to hybrid work and are probably never going to go back to working 5 days a week in the office. This is resulting in many of these cities dying a slow death as a vast amount of commercial real estate lies empty.

There was a time when it was normal for a city to catch on fire. This would often be a result of human stupidity. Poor and unplanned construction and lack of proper safety features were responsible for many of the fires. These were identified and fixed in the 20th century.
In the 21st century, we ushered in an era of wildfire. And now these are turning into urban fires as we all saw in Hawaii. Could many more cities be on the line? What will we do to protect ourselves?

There is a strike that is taking place in Hollywood. It is not a first and it is certainly not unprecedented. It is a clashing of an industry of artists against a paradigm shift that is taking place. At stake is their future earnings potential. Think of this like 2010 for Nokia, what they did would either make them or break them. Of course, Nokia did not understand the value of software and went broke. By comparison, the writers and the actors understand the value of their work and they also understand the shortcomings of AI. Hence the fight.

The Indian monsoon is a peculiar phenomenon which is made possible by the unique geographical positioning of the country. It ensures great harvest and has played a key role in ensuring that India has a thriving agricultural economy. That monsoon is being disrupted. It was a never-before recorded event that set off a series of dominoes that culminated in Delhi being flooded. Climate is changing, and we are not prepared for it.

India launched its latest attempt to land on the moon. No easy feat but a huge one if they are able to pull it off. The country is also working on putting a man in space in the next 2 years.
In the meantime, China has already landed on the moon, almost at the same exact spot India is aiming at and it has also started building a space station.
The ambitions seem similar but the budgets have a huge difference. Who will come out on top in 20 years?

When a cargo ship navigates through the Panama Canal it is not going through a neatly cut waterway from one side to the other, it is mostly navigating a lake which covers half the country. That lake is located 26 Meters above sea level. So the ships need to be raised to the level of the lake and then dropped back into the ocean.
Thanks to a drought the lake is drying up and making it harder for ships to navigate the canal. If the canal becomes harder to navigate, it would impact trade between Europe, US and Asia.

Inflation is the measure of price rise. The increase in price implies that workers would need more money to maintain their standards of living. Not increase, just maintain. The low inflation rate is a farcical creation of corporate America to ensure that workers need not be compensated any more than they absolutely have to.

Accessibility is one of those features that are important to many people but unless you use it regularly, you often do not care about it. Did you know closed caption which almost all of us use which watching TV today something that was originally designed as an accessibility feature?
In this episode, I speak with Thomas Logan, the founder of Equal Entry, a firm focused on consulting for accessibility. He lives in Japan but caters to a large US customer base in the area of designing for accessibility. I learnt a lot about accessibility as well as the process that they follow to include accessibility in various product.

The Idea Factory: Bell Labs and the Great Age of American Innovation by Jon Gertner
Bell Labs was one of a kind organisation that launched the information age. Developed as an organisation that helped solve problems that AT&T faced such as; How do we keep telephone poles from rotting? What kind of insulation would ensure that the telephone wires don’t need a constant replacement? They focused on science rather than just engineering. The focus on basics divorced from the need to think about commercial viability ultimately delivered. Radar, Transistor, Unix, C, Laser, fibre optics and many more innovations came out of the labs. This book chronicles the rise and fall of the organisation.
This book was recommended to me by Dr Balachandran A. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book.
Dr Balachandran A is the General Manager of the Vellore Institute of Technology - Technology Business Incubator (VIT-TBI). He has been running the incubator for the past 20 years. VIT-TBI was one of the first incubators under the TBI program of the Department of Science and Technology. He has had a front-row seat to watch the startup and innovation ecosystem evolve in India.
I spoke to him about the things I read in the book and sought his perspectives around innovation development from an Indian context.
Since he runs an incubator, he is constantly thinking about ways of improving the emergence of innovation and nurturing them. He has been active in Industry, Academia and Government initiatives and brings a unique perspective. I hoped to capture the same in this podcast.
