Description:

In this episode, Steph and her guest, Sinead talk about the difficulties and hardships that women who have had cesarean section births can go through, as well as how to recover from them, and the risk factors that can lead to pelvic organ prolapse. Sinead discusses her own struggles with pelvic girdle pain during pregnancy and how those struggles inspired her to develop the SRC support garments. These garments are intended to give support to women who are experiencing pelvic organ prolapse.

Introduction [00:00:00 - 00:11:03]

Sinead discussed her experience with pelvic girdle pain during pregnancy and how it led to the development of the SRC support garments. Sinead experienced pelvic girdle pain during her second and third pregnancies, including ongoing pain and difficulty with day-to-day activities. After experiencing pelvic girdle pain during her cesarean section birth, she made the decision to develop supportive garments for women.

The Pregnancy Product [00:11:03 - 00:20:48]

Women who are having pelvic girdle pain, low back pain, vulva varices, and swelling or varicose veins of the leg are the target audience for Sinead's recommendation of the pregnancy product. It can be worn either under or over the bump, depending on your preference.

SRC Recuperation Including the technical design of the garment, shorts for postpartum recovery, and perineal wounds for pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence are being developed.

Inspiration From Adversity [00:20:48 - 00:34:06]

Sinead outlines the procedures for returning and exchanging SRC support garments, as well as the warranty that includes a full refund of the purchase price. Steph and Sinead talk about the necessity of having the correct size for the SRC support garments and how they should feel supportive without being restrictive. Steph and Sinead also explain the importance of getting the correct fit. Steph comments on Sinead's path in developing the SRC support garments and turning her personal experience into a good solution for women's pelvic health. Sinead was inspired to create these garments by her own struggles with pelvic pain.

Description:

In the episode, we discuss the importance of taking a holistic approach to one's health and being mindful of language when discussing pelvic organ prolapse.

Introduction (00:00:00 - 00:02:06)

In today’s episode, Steph and Benedict discuss Benedict's journey as a Health Coach and mum living with pelvic organ prolapse and how she has used holistic approaches, including breath work and nutrition, to manage her symptoms.

Benedict's journey with prolapse and holistic approaches [00:02:50 - 00:05:25]

Benedict shares her initial attempts to resolve prolapse, including being told she needed surgery and her decision to take a holistic approach. She also discussed the importance of using healing language rather than language that implies brokenness or the need for fixing.

Diet and symptoms [00:06:48 - 00:12:36]

Benedict talks about her journey towards nourishing herself with healthy food and being mindful of what she eats. The importance of gut health and how it affects physical and emotional symptoms.

Breath-work [00:12:36 - 00:25:19]

Benedict shares her journey with breath work and how it helped her manage stress and become a health coach. She also emphasized the importance of being in a relaxed state to heal and regenerate cells and how she started implementing five minutes of breathing a day and how it helped her become more resilient to stress.

The importance of breathwork and relaxation [00:25:19 - 00:40:57]

This explains how breathing from the top of the chest sends a message to the brain that we are stressed, and the importance of deep breathing for relaxation. Benedict demonstrates a breathwork technique called the physiological sigh, which has been scientifically proven to bring instant relaxation.

Let us know how this technique worked for you. Send a DM via Instagram @bravemumma.

Description:

Welcome to this week's conversations with to Dr. Sarah Woodward, a Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist, who works to break the taboo surrounding pelvic organ prolapse by providing women with the community and resources they need to overcome their condition and regain control of their lives.

Introduction (00:00:00 - 00:01:49)

In this episode, we'll talk about Dr. Sarah's physiotherapy practice and how she helps women who have pelvic organ prolapse by healing more than just their physical symptoms.

Others may disregard their experience (00:01:49 - 00:04:00)

Dr. Sarah discovered after many years in practice that patients are aware of their own internal states. A lot of people don't believe them when they say their experience doesn't line up with the truth about their bodies.

The stigma and taboo of pelvic organ prolapse (00:04:00 - 00:10:28)

Pelvic organ prolapse carries with it a heavy social stigma. Women are stereotypically portrayed in popular media as being overly sensitive and prone to hysteria. They can't be trusted with the truth about their bodies, including knowledge concerning prolapse and the location of other anatomical features.

The obstacles to obtaining the necessary assistance and support (00:10:28 - 00:18:37)

Exposing the taboo of pelvic organ prolapse and the necessity of normalizing it in order to seek help and feel better are two steps in overcoming the stigma associated with the condition. Depending on where you are in the world and how you plan to gain access to a pelvic health physical therapist, your first step should be to discover one. These professionals can instruct you on how to properly use your muscles.

Discussing holistic treatment and financial and emotional support (00:18:37 - 00:26:57)

An examination of the significance of holistic care as well as the requirement for proper financial and emotional support for women who suffer from pelvic organ prolapse. It is really beneficial to become involved in a community, and there are a great many things from which you can benefit. This is due to the fact that you possess many resources that you are able to share with others, which in turn can help people become involved.

Prolapse makes no distinctions (00:26:57 - 00:31:58)

Your issues with your pelvic floor shouldn't be kept so close to your chest. It is imperative that we begin sharing our experiences with one another in order to provide mutual support and feel as though we are not alone.

In this Bravemumma community, you never need to feel alone.

DESCRIPTION

Welcome to this week's episode of our podcast, where we are honored to bring you a conversation that is truly impactful.

We have the pleasure of speaking with two remarkable women, Dr. Bri and Kim Vopni, who combined have spent over 30 years working with women living with prolapse. Their own experiences living with prolapse have made them the perfect guests for this conversation about healing.

As we explore this topic of healing, we dive into the essential difference between fixing prolapse and healing, which we touched upon in our previous episode.

Both Dr. Bri and Kim provide invaluable insights and practical advice on how to begin your healing journey from prolapse. They offer outside-the-box and easy-to-follow steps that can help you take the first steps toward recovery when you're ready to explore this aspect of your journey.

We also delve into the importance of keeping an open mind and creating a safe space for yourself to discover your true and authentic self by being part of a healing retreat.

Kim and Bri share their expertise on just some of the possible positive things to come from allowing ourselves to be immersed in a retreat and discuss the potential for transformative experiences and those ‘aha’ moments that can be truly life-changing.

This conversation is filled with so much wisdom and practical advice that we are confident it will make a positive impact on anyone struggling with prolapse or interested in finding their authentic self.

Don't forget to check out the links to both Dr. Bri and Kim Vopni in the show notes, where you can learn more about their work and connect with them personally. And if you haven't already, head over to our YouTube channel and hit the subscribe button to watch our latest episodes.

Introduction (00:00:00 - 00:01:38)

Welcome to this episode where we discuss the possibility of healing prolapse naturally. I invite you to approach this conversation with an open mind. I want to share my thoughts and experiences, and I hope you find them helpful.

Storytime (00:01:38 - 00:03:52)

I want to start by sharing a personal story about a mindset shift that occurred during a family vacation. I didn't expect it to happen, but I observed that my prolapse symptoms were less evident when I was on vacation. This experience left me feeling unsure about the power of the mind and raised more questions than answers.

Healing vs. Fixing (00:03:52 - 00:06:15)

During this episode, I want to explain the difference between fixing and healing prolapse. Fixing prolapse involves reversing the symptoms and returning to the way things were before prolapse. In contrast, healing prolapse involves accepting the situation, understanding it, and feeling okay despite the physical symptoms. I encourage you to adopt a healing mindset and embrace the journey.

The Healing Spectrum (00:06:15 - 00:08:05)

Now, let's talk about the healing spectrum and how it relates to prolapse. At one end of the spectrum, fixing prolapse involves surgery or using a pessary. At the other end of the spectrum, healing prolapse involves accepting the situation and working with it. It's important to note that everyone's journey is different, and it's essential to find what works best for you.

Next week on the show we will be continuing this healing conversation by speaking with two experts in this POP space.

Description:

This episode has a surprising plot twist that I think everyone in the Bravemumma community can relate to, regardless of their interest in birth control pills. This episode is about empowerment, self-discovery, and healing. So if you're looking for inspiration and support in your own journey, you won't want to miss it.

Introduction (00:00:00 - 00:00:28)

In today’s episode, we’ll discuss how I tried to alleviate the symptoms of pelvic organ prolapse with my doctor's help and I’m going to share what I did, how I did it, and the results.

Tracking the Symptoms of Prolapse With Doctor’s Help (00:00:28 - 00:02:43)

Mentally tracking the symptoms of prolapse is tricky. We think we know our POP symptoms can be felt more significantly just before and after your period.

The thought was prolapse symptoms could possibly go away if I didn't have a period. After sharing my observations and speculations with my GP, we discussed being on the contraceptive pill long-term without having a period (and therefore no symptoms).

A Matter of Trial and Error (00:02:43 - 00:04:48)

My doctor advised me to take a certain type of birth control tablet from October to December. I had my period multiple times in November and December, with the same symptoms as a normal period (only more). I decided not to take the pill to stop my period after experiencing worse breakthrough bleeds and symptoms.

Mindset Shift and Prolapse: A Plot Twist (00:04:48 - 00:06:57)

Going on a family vacation and expecting to do a lot of walking, I observed one thing: prolapse symptoms were less evident when I was on vacation. At first, I thought it was because I wasn't doing all of the chores like I would at home.

This led to thinking a lot about our mindset and left me with more questions than answers. Questions we are going to further explore on this show. I see myself as a strong-minded person and this experience left me feeling very unsure about the power of the mind - in a good way.

If any of this is resonating with you right now and would like to discuss your own healing journey, you can reach out via Instagram.

Description

Introduction (00:00 - 00:48)

In this episode, we explore how alcohol consumption affects prolapse symptoms and how quitting alcohol can make a positive difference. I share my personal experience of dealing with a prolapse diagnosis and how alcohol became my way of coping.

The Negative Impact of Alcohol on Prolapse Symptoms (00:48 - 03:17)

While alcohol helped to cope with prolapse symptoms in the short term, it had a negative impact on symptoms the next day. Initially, a glass of wine with dinner, but it gradually turned into a bottle or two. Alcohol affected my bowel and bladder movements, leading to constipation and difficulty emptying my bowel completely.

Quitting Alcohol: Positive Changes (03:17 - 06:02)

The decision to quit alcohol entirely in early January 2022 wasn't easy. Since quitting, I've noticed several positive changes, including a reduction in prolapse symptoms.

The Connection Between Alcohol and Prolapse Symptoms (06:02 - 08:05)

When drinking alcohol lowers inhibitions, it can lead to overeating sugary and processed junk food. This, in turn, leads to dehydration, which can cause constipation and exacerbate prolapse symptoms. By quitting alcohol, I've been able to break this cycle and take better care of my entire body.

DESCRIPTION

Today we are sharing a sneaky bonus episode for Season Two.

Initially, this episode was only going to our private Tips & Tricks for Women Living with POP - Facebook group.

Then after listening through after production, I was like, how can I not share this with everyone who tunes into this podcast? Because you might find some things in here that are really helpful for you as a parent in terms of how to start conversations about pelvic sexual health with your own children.

Our conversation with Psycho-Sexologist, Chantelle Otten is so important to anyone who is wanting to feel better about their sexual health, self-esteem, and communication.

If you're like many of us, talking about this may not come easy. This is why having conversations like this on a podcast is the best way to have access to this information without anyone needing to know!

Please note: we are sharing a special announcement in this episode which means the introduction goes beyond our normal 3-4 minutes. If this is something that's not for you, simply skip to around 10 minutes in.

My favourite quote from this chat: "Just go gently, it's not something you have to rush into".

This episode is for you if you want to know more about:

  • pelvic floor dysfunction
  • pelvic organ prolapse
  • sexual health and wellbeing
  • tips to helping your intimate life with yourself and/or your partner
  • how to start the conversation about your sexual health with your partner
  • when to start talking to your own children about their pelvic health and wellbeing

DESCRIPTION

In today's episode, our guest is one of the first women that we are speaking to who lives with pelvic organ prolapse and has not yet become a mum. That's right, Natashja was only 18 when she discovered that she had prolapse.

Now, I don't want to give too much of her story away, but I do just want to let you know when I welcome her to the show you are going to hear me call her Simone and you might think, oh, Steph's losing the plot. She doesn't even have the name of her guest right.

I've only ever known her as Simone and I think we need to address this point. When Natashja first started her prolapse journey and started talking about it openly, she had so much fear of the shame and taboo of talking about women's pelvic health and then the extra layer of being so young and then the extra layer of not yet being a mum.

Natashja started her Instagram account and called herself Simone as a pseudonym as a level of protection, I guess. And I am so proud of her. I'm so proud of her for sharing her journey with us today because she is so brave to be able to do that.

This episode is for you if you want to know more about:

  • pelvic organ prolapse
  • Lichen Sclerosus
  • uterine prolapse
  • hysteroscopy
  • septate uterus
  • misdiagnosis
  • how to communicate with your loved ones about prolapse
  • perinatal decent
  • how chronic constipation is a risk factor for POP
  • women's pelvic floor physiotherapy
  • sex with pessaries

DESCRIPTION

It's exciting to be bringing you something that we've never done before on the show, we're sharing a conversation I had with our very first male guest.

I know this is women's health. I know this is our pelvic health space

I think after a couple of minutes of listening, you're going to realise why I invited this guest, in particular, to come and talk to us.

His name is Dr. Ray Hodgson. He is a gynecologist. Also a specialist pelvic organ prolapse surgeon, here in Australia and also in Nepal.

He's written a book called Heartbreak In The Himalayas, which shares his journey of how he came to be a volunteer surgeon in Nepal, helping women as young as in their early twenties with prolapse.

This is a long episode and for good reason, there's so much valuable information about prolapse, surgery, and what we can be doing today to manage living with prolapse.

This episode is for you if you want to know more about:

  • pelvic organ prolapse
  • prolapse surgery
  • Levator Ani Avulsions
  • prolapse surgery in Australia and Nepal
  • prolapse research
  • forceps in vaginal childbirth

In this conversation, you will hear the true and raw emotions that can come with traumatic birth and living with pelvic organ prolapse.

Tor has a way of sharing her story that helps us feel less alone. She's been through many phases of a prolapse journey, including feeling better in time for a second birth than having her prolapse return with fecal incontinence, which lead to surgery.

We’ve invited Tor to come back and continue this conversation because there is so much more to it. This episode really only scratches the surface and I feel that women who have either lived through this would really want to discover practical ways to be able to come out the other side and be okay.

This episode is for you if you want to know more about:

  • pelvic organ prolapse
  • maternal exhaustion in childbirth incontinence
  • episiotomy
  • postpartum bleeding and blood transfusion
  • fitness and prolapse
  • prolapse surgery
  • peri-menopause

We have coaching for learning, fitness, and life, but have you ever heard of a coach for your vagina?

Today we talk with the Vagina Coach - Kim Viponi, who has been working in this pelvic health space for over 20 years. Together we unpack some of the hard stuff, including prolapse surgery, sex and prolapse, and how to start the conversation about overall pelvic health and prolapse with your children, doctors, and those close to you.

We like to acknowledge the founder for the Association for Pelvic Organ Prolapse Support, Sherrie Palm for leading the charge for us women with prolapse. Today marks the start of Pelvic Organ Prolapse Awareness Month thanks to her hard work and dedication to this space.

This is what I love most about podcasting because we can have our little earbuds in our ears and no one has a clue what we are actually listening to. Today we are chatting with Vanessa Tarfon, a qualified sex and intimacy therapist.

If you are living with pelvic organ prolapse and/or incontinence and find it difficult to have a conversation about sex with a partner, Vanessa is going to teach you how to connect with yourself first (because that's so important). Then to be able to connect with your partner in ways you've probably never heard of before her practical tips are simple to implement.

And the best thing is that you can just do it at your own pace.

This episode is for you if you want to know more about:

  • intimacy with prolapse and incontinence
  • learning that self-pleasure is okay
  • how to have conversations with your partner about sex (prolapse or not)
  • 'squirt blankets' for incontinence
  • navigating pornography
  • how we as parents can start conversations about intimacy with our kids, at the appropriate age.

I know, I get it.

Using the words 'how to parent' in the heading could possibly put you off. We all feel like we’re constantly being told how to do things.

But this one is different. Hear me out…

While I do my best and have some experience working with kids (20 years in education), there are so many elements of parenting that I have no clue what I'm doing.

And I'm not talking about the cleaning, cooking, or washing on repeat.

It's the moments when I don't feel like I'm not even being a 'good' Mumma.

When I yell.

When I have no tolerance.

When all I want to do is run away.

When I worry too much.

When I want to be better, but don't know how.

Join us for this chat with Nellie Harden today. It really made me feel like there is hope and another way to view parenting that allows us to feel like we are making a positive difference, without pulling our hair out (in the best way we can).

Because let's face it, we all want our kids to be okay in this world.

This episode is for you if you want to know more about:

  • twin pregnancy and birth
  • parenting birth to 9 and then the second half of childhood (9 to 18)
  • how to live through adversity and create a life you want
  • octopus parenting
  • how to build strong family foundations
  • infertility and miscarriage
  • getting your family to be a team with you in the captain's seat
  • parenting anxiety
  • setting up your children for a successful adulthood

~ Season Final ~

Join the discussion with Elaine Miller, Pelvic Physiotherapist, mother, and award winning comedian.

Elaine experienced pelvic organ prolapse and stress incontinence following the birth of her children and was shocked about the lack of literature, resources and understanding of these very common health issues.

Elaine is a breath of fresh air in her approach to all things relating to women's health and uses comedy as an educational tool in breaking down barriers for open and frank discussions.

Sadly, many women tend to ignore symptoms of incontinence and POP due to being busy with young babies and children. Important not to accept POP as 'normal'. Elaine educates us that 25% of women in the UK do not seek help with incontinence and 1 in 2 women will experience POP.

This episode is for you if you want to know more about:

  • posterior vaginal childbirth
  • pelvic organ proplapse
  • vomiting in labour
  • sensational vaginal birth story
  • incontinence
  • pelvic floor physiotherapy
  • breaking down barriers to women's health
  • normalising anatomy terminology
  • importance of ongoing health education

Kimmy Smith, exercise and yoga lover with expertise in the area of exercise throughout pregnancy and postnatal.

Kim was an elite athlete with the Australian Netball Squad prior to having children and was also a Corporate Lawyer. Kim moved on from both representative netball and the corporate law world to concentrate on her passion for health and fitness.

Kim has always maintained health and wellness through exercise however following the birth of her daughters realised there was little information available relating to birth injuries and how to improve your overall pelvic floor condition through exercise.

Kim has teamed up with a Women's Health Physiotherapist, Lyz Evans and they've created the 'Empowered Motherhood Program'. This is an award winning exercise program for women during pregnancy and in postnatal.

Kim draws upon her own birth experiences and discusses the need for more readily available information for women at all stages of their life to assist with strengthening their pelvic floors and understanding the functionality of their pelvic floor through specific exercise programs.

Many women have no idea what prolapse is or understand the impact it can have on your life. Following the birth of her first child Kim was diagnosed with POP and given pamphlets to go away and read. The lack of support and knowledge led to her passion to improve this area of women's health.

DESCRIPTION

A must listen to podcast with Mish Wright, change practitioner in the field of women's fitness, exercise and overall health. In acknowledging the importance of maintaining physical fitness and mental health through exercise it is also vital to understand that the 'one size fits all' philosophy does not apply to most women.

Women of all stages of life have engaged in some level of fitness and exercise. But have we been left feeling deflated due to inability to continue due to problems with incontinence, or pelvic floor issues such as prolapse, or general pain in the pelvic area? Or perhaps feelings of shame or embarrassment in talking about these issues with fitness instructors or exercise professionals?

There is a general lack of understanding in the fitness industry about women's health, particular as it relates to prolapse and incontinence. Mish is passionate about changing this and has developed many educational programs to inform women and fitness professionals.

Has your fitness instructor ever discussed issues relating to pelvic floor or the importance of correct technique? Most instructors will inquire if you have an ankle injury, back injury etc. prior the commencement of the course but do they ask whether you have an injury relating to pelvic floor injury or suffer with incontinence?

In fact you may be causing more damage to your body without the essential knowledge and information relating to the right form of exercise for your body.

This episode is for you if you want to know more about:

  • what everyone can be doing now to help make change
  • exercise and Fitness with POP
  • pelvic organ prolapse and avulsion
  • incontinence
  • shame and stigma associated with prolapse
  • menstrual cycles, peri-menopause and menopause
  • hormones, Estrogen, Cortisol and bone density

How do you know it’s time to have POP surgery?

This is a two part series with Sarah Prime, who talks in depth about her decision to have prolapse surgery. Sarah tells us why as a ‘younger’ woman she could no longer live a life like this. Sarah has done her research and has some top tips for the best chance of a positive outcome to navigate her new norm.

Women living with pelvic organ prolapse (POP) are often presented with three options to manage daily life.

  1. Physiotherapy

Generally surgery is the last option offered to women who’ve finished having children and are much ‘older’. We will check back in with Sarah for part two following her surgery and recovery.

DESCRIPTION

If you have sustained injuries through childbirth, this discussion with Associate Hayley Collins - serves to be informative regarding the litigation process in receiving not only acknowledgement of the injuries incurred but also compensation.

For the average person the area of law is unknown and there is a general lack of understanding regarding the different titles and levels of law professionals i.e differences between lawyer, solicitors, associates, barrister QC etc and each of their area of expertise. So when women find themselves wanting to explore options for taking on a claim following injuries as a result of birth trauma this field can be quite intimidating and unknown.

What are some of the drawbacks or negatives in pursuing a law claim for birth injury? Financial constraints can be one factor as the process can be quite expensive. Another aspect is the process can take a long time before reaching court. Women are generally vulnerable following a traumatic birth and are daunted by the prospect of litigation.

There are many positive aspects of working with people that have experienced birth trauma....success in receiving financial compensation for injury, acknowledgement of injuries, wanting to help other people that have experienced birth trauma.

This episode is for you if you want to know about:

  • Legal terminology e.g. what is causation?
  • Vaginal birth
  • Compensation
  • Forceps
  • Breach of duty of care due to lack of consent prior to the use of forceps
  • C Section
  • Birthing Plan
  • Midwifery profession promote vaginal birth
  • C Section can be viewed as failing in the birth area
  • Medical profession often normalise birth trauma
  • Disbursements
  • No win - no pay
  • Settlement
  • Upfront understanding and knowledge of the process involved taking on a claim for medical negligence.
  • Prospects of success
  • Statute of Limitation
  • Health policies in relation to birth
  • HCCC
  • Birthing debrief
  • Birthing Plan
  • What is a Class Action?

What do childbirth, prolapse, Hypopressives and motherhood all have in common? This amazing woman - Hayley Wildsmith.

This episode is so impactful. After recording I was left feeling surprised by what I learned and inspired to do further research on Hypopressives. Women living with POP and Levator Ani Avulsions are often told there is nothing they can do to ‘fix’ their prolapse. This chat with Hayley may just flip this common opinion on its head?

There was so much to cover in this important conversation. It’s both thought provoking and in depth. With it being so extensive, it’s well worth grabbing a BIG cuppa and listening until the end.

This episode is for you if you want to know more about:

  • pelvic floor dysfunction
  • pelvic organ prolapse
  • Levator ani avulsions
  • POP surgery
  • Top tips for women thinking about surgery and/or recovering from surgery
  • Postnatal depression and anxiety for women living with POP
  • pelvic floor exercises and anatomy
  • Hypopressives
  • pain with sex
  • Hypotonic
