SERMON QUESTIONS

  1. Read Ecclesiastes 5:18-20. Note the Teacher talks about finding enjoyment in “his lot”. How would you describe your “lot” in life? How has it changed over the years?

  2. The Teacher in Ecclesiastes has often stated that he perceives much of life’s toil as vain. Now he says a person should find joy in it. Considering what he says in verses 18-20, what allows a person to move from a sense of tedium to joy in their work?

  3. What does the teacher mean when he says “he will not much remember the days of his life”? Is that a good or negative thing?

  4. Each of us has a lot in life but Jesus indicated that if we are his followers our lots are also part of something bigger. Read Matthew 9:36-38. How and where are you engaging your wealth, possessions and power (Eccl 5:20) in the work of that bigger field?

  4. Read Ecclesiastes 5:3 & 7. It is interesting that the Teacher in this passage seems to warn about personal dreams. Is it wrong to have a dream? What is the danger the Teacher is concerned with? What application can you find in your own life?

Regardless of how human will plays into the equation, what is encouraging about knowing that God has predestined you for adoption?

  4. Looking at Ephesians 1:1-10, what evidence do you find that points to God’s great love for you?

  3. Why do you think Moses specifically made a record of his own tiredness and the help he received from Aaron & Hur?

  4. What lessons does this story have for us? Do you agree with Pastor Tim’s interpretation? Why or why not?

Pastor Tim Richards continues the series "Long Journey Home: Navigating the Wilderness", focusing this week on Water From a Rock.

SERMON QUESTIONS:

  1. Read Exodus 17:1-7. Massah & Merebah mean Test & Argue in Hebrew. Why do you think Moses named the place in recognition of the people’s arguing rather than the Lord’s miracle? Where are the places in your life where you tend to argue or complain?

  2. Read 1 Corinthians 10:1-4. Why do you think Paul chose the rock in the wilderness as a figure representing Jesus?

  3. Israel’s physical thirst can be a good parallel for spiritual thirst. In what sorts of things do people try to find soul satisfaction? How can those things leave us still thirsty? What is it about Jesus that is better?

  4. What are things you have found helpful in keeping your soul satisfied in Jesus? What gets you distracted, fearful or angry?

Pastor Tim Richards continues the series "Forgotten Prophets," looking at Zechariah.
SERMON QUESTIONS:1. Try comparing Zechariah, chapters 1-8 to Haggai. How many connections can you find between the two? 2. Zechariah has a series of visions. Some of the imagery can be hard to understand but take a look at the vision in Zechariah 2:1-13. What does it mean? How would this have been encouraging to conquered people who were trying to rebuild their ruined city? 3. Zechariah is quoted numerous times in the New Testament. Read Zechariah 9:9. What New Testament event is seen as a fulfillment of this? What is the significance of King entering a city on a donkey instead of a war horse (a good study Bible or commentary may give some added insight)? What does this tell you about Jesus? 4. In Zechariah 4:8-10 the people are told that those who despised the day of small things will one day rejoice to see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel. What does that mean (again a good study Bible or commentary may help)? Thinking about your own life, are there any small things that may seem discouraging now that you recognize God may be using for something greater in the future?

  2. Read Zephaniah 1:4-5. What more does this tell you about the spiritual condition of Isreal in the days of Zephaniah? Can you think of any situations in our current time that might be similar?

  3. Compare Zephaniah 2:3 and Micah 6:8. What common themes are there? Thinking of your own life, what does it look like for you to be this kind of person? Where do you find it challenging?

  4. Read Zephaniah 1:17. What insights does this give you into the character of God and his relationship to us? Is it surprising to find a verse like this in a book that is full of warnings about God’s judgment?

SERMON QUESTIONS

  1. If you’ve spent any time around kids, you’ve probably heard some funny “why” questions. Which ones do you recall (or any other really hard to answer questions you’ve heard kids pose).

  2. Habakkuk finds himself in a dialog with God. It begins with Habakkuk asking God some hard questions (Habakkuk 1:1-4). How would sum up his questions in your own words? Do any of those resonate with you? If so, which ones and why?

  3. God’s answer is not the one Habakkuk wants to hear. He says he is going to use a fierce & godless enemy to punish his people. What is Habakkuk’s response (Habakkuk 2:1). Take a look at King David’s words in Psalm 37:7-9. What connections can you make between Habakkuk & David’s responses?

  4. Read James 1:3-4. In what ways does waiting & steadfastness bring about a perfecting & completion in a believer’s life? Is there a trial in your life right now that is demanding steadfastness? 2. Jonah wanted nothing to do with the pagan, violent people of Ninevah. If Jonah were living today, who do you think he might want nothing to do with?

Witnesses In A Cosmic Court Case with Dan Stephenson

  1. Read the whole chapter – Isaiah 43. Call out some of the things you see that reflect God’s activity in the world and his superiority over false “gods.”

  2. Practice giving your testimony to somebody “friendly” and get some feedback. If you’re in a group setting, have three people give testimonies. The rest should write down their testimonies when they get a chance. Note: if you became a believer at a young age, talk about the reasons you believe today and what God has done in your life.

  3. Who, or what, are some of today’s false “gods”?

  4. Go listen to the song “Evidence” by Josh Baldwin – if you can, put the lyrics in front of you as you listen. In what ways do you see the evidence of God’s goodness “all over your life”?

  5. Testing your memory – see if you can define the following legal terms about witnesses: 1. “Percipient” witness 2. “Propensity” for truth-telling 3. “Foundation”

  1. I mentioned that these opening verses are like a hymn of superlatives. Which one speaks the most to you and why?

Join Pastor Tim as he explores Jesus' teachings from Sermon on the Mount with his new series "Live Like Mountain Folk." This week he explores the meaning of "The Golden Rule" by looking at Matthew 7:12.

Discussion and Reflection:

  1. How do you think this command to do to others as we would want others to do to us ties into the rest of Jesus’ sermon? What are the connections?

  2. Do you own comparison and contrast between the statement of Rabbi Shammai (“What is hateful to you, do not do to anyone else.”) and Jesus (“Whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them.”).

  3. Pick one particular relationship where you find it challenging to know how – or even to want to – show love to other person. Try to think specifically how you would want to be shown love if you were in their position. How could you show some of that love this week?

  4. Reflect a bit on Jesus prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane (““My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”). What are the implications of the Golden Rule when it comes to Jesus’ love for you?

Children & Family Ministries Pastor, Britt Hemphill, talks about "The [other] Great Commission" by considering who the worlds largest people group is and where they are located now and in the next 30 years.

Discussion and Reflection:

  1. Using only one-word adjectives, ask your group to describe what it is about children that makes them uniquely able to understand the life and mission of Jesus.

  2. Why is the “4-14 window” so significant in the context of responding to the invitation of the gospel.

  3. What surprised you most about the new global realities pastor Britt share about?

  4. What role does imagination play in facilitating meaningful interactions with the Word of God? Is there one particular Bible account where imagination has especially added value for you? If so, in what way(s)?

  5. Read this quote from The Economist article I’m a bad parent because I’ve forgotten my own childhood: “I am haunted by a sense that my life would be richer, more authentic somehow, if I could more easily access a felt connection to my childhood.” Discuss this quote in the context of our relationship with Christ as adults and keeping in mind how Jesus spoke about children.

  6. Discuss thoughts and/or ideas about the idea of intergenerational ministry at DCC. (refresher: intergenerational ministry focuses on connecting multiple generations in faith-forming relationships cultivated through times of corporate worship, intentional discipleship, and ongoing mentoring.)

  7. Read Luke 18:16. From a personal standpoint, what are you doing to let children come to Jesus? Discuss some of the ways adults might hinder them from doing so.

Discussion and Reflection:

  1. Have you ever tried fasting? If so, was it for spiritual or health reasons? What was it like?

  2. How do you think Christians today can be tempted to act spiritual?

  3. Have you ever been in situation where you felt pressure either to act or not act in a certain way during corporate worship?

  4. Jesus warned about doing “spiritual things” for show. He also, a little later in this same sermon (Matthew 7:1) warned about judging others – which could include making judgments about the motives of others who may worship differently than we do. How do we guard both our actions and our hearts to ensure that we are worshipping in spirit and in truth (John 4:23-24)?

Join Pastor Tim as he explores Jesus' teachings from Sermon on the Mount with his new series "Live Like Mountain Folk." This week he explains why we've chosen not to "pass the plate."

Discussion and Reflection:

  1. What might be some examples in our own time of people doing generous things more to be noticed than to be helpful?

  2. In discussing what Jesus meant when He said we shouldn’t let our left hand know what our right hand is doing, Pastor Tim talked about “self-hypocrisy”. What did he mean by that?

  3. In trying to reconcile what Jesus said in Matthew 5:4 vs 5:16, A.B. Bruce said that Jesus was saying we should “show when tempted to hide” and “hide when tempted to show.” What did he mean by that? Everyone is different – do you find yourself more tempted to hide or show for the wrong reasons?

  4. Pastor Tim suggested 4 tests that may be help us determine if our giving is rightly motivated. Which of these is most helpful to you?

• How do you respond when you are generous, and no one notices?

• How do you feel when others are recognized, but you are not?

• When you are asked to give, do you weigh the “impact” it may have on your image?

• What motivates you to give?

Join Pastor Tim as he explores Jesus' teachings from Sermon on the Mount with his new series "Live Like Mountain Folk." This week he examines what hermeneutics is in relation to the Bible.

Discussion and Reflection:

Here are four guidelines that will generally contribute to a healthy approach to correctly understanding scripture.

• First and foremost, pray and ask the Holy Spirit to show you the truth of God’s Word.

• The second is to assume that the Bible, in general, says what it means. That is, the Bible is generally to be interpreted literally, taking the plain meaning of the passage over some complicated, allegorical interpretation, (unless it’s obviously meant to be symbolic or a figure of speech.)

• A third tip is to consider the passage in context. What was the historical context? Who wrote it? Who were they writing to, if anyone? Why? What was the cultural context? What was going on at the time, etc?

• Finally, it’s essential to interpret the passage within the context of the Bible itself. How does it support the whole counsel of God as found in scripture? What verses precede and follow the passage? What is the passage as a whole about? What about the book? Is it referencing a different part of Scripture?
