Welcome to episode 31 of the Ran By Nature Club Podcast. Today I am joined by Charlotte Jade Johnson - a fashion business consultant. Charlotte provides consultancy for founders looking to start/scale their fashion brand through the Fashion Founder program.

But it’s not her fashion skills and experience that is the focus of today’s episode - although our love of sustainable fashion is how we connected online. I later found out that Charlotte was a bodybuilder. And competed for several seasons.

Something that she got into after going to the gym and becoming interested in fitness and food.

Ever wondered what it means to be a bodybuilder?

The sacrifices and effect it can have on your relationship with your body and food?

Just how much a bodybuilding bikini actually costs?

Listen to todays episode to find out

If you have any comments or questions, send me or Charlotte a DM on social media

In this solo episode I talk about the need to find your why for exercise

Yes - the famous Simon Sinek book can be used for so many different aspects of life

And how I feel like I don’t really fit into any ‘fitness box’

Do you feel that too?

My social media feed is filled with either the ‘go hard go home’ or the ‘joyful and intuitive movement’

But I don’t really see myself in either. Which can make you feel like you don’t belong and you should be in a box or category

I am a runner but I am not racing and doing marathons

I lift weights but I am not interested in cross fit

My reasons for moving are my own. And they have changed throughout my life

So today I am looking at the pros and cons of fitsp, influencers and the online space

In someways its great to find your community online. But in other ways it can leave little room for people who don’t fit neatly in a box. I mean I am not a pair of trainers - I don’t need to go in a box, right?

Let me know what you think of todays episode. Tag me @ranbynature and @brynachrismas on instagram

The next 10 y are crucial if we want to limit global warming by 1.5 degrees Celsius.

At the same time. In the U.K. Sitting down for more than 5 h per day has increased by over 20% in the last 20 y.

Physical inactivity is the 4th biggest killer (World Health Organisation).

Yet globally, 1.3 million deaths on the road and 3.2 million deaths from air pollution.

As climate changes, so will our exercise habits.

And, our exercise habits, effect climate change.

So do they have a shared solution?

We know from research that people feel better in green spaces. Physical activity increases, as does mental and emotional health .

Green spaces also help to keep urban areas cool by 0.94 degrees Celsius - and they help with air and noise pollution.

When we connect to nature we also want to take care of it .

So if we want to take positive action to help our own health and the health of the planet we need to offer greater access and safety to green spaces and green facilities.

We need multiple sectors working together.

Copenhagen has increased the number of all trips from walking/cycling to 45% - the solutions are there

It’s possible

What other shared solutions can you think of?

Environment and exercise are tied together.

Plastics have revolutionized sports in recent years. From the tracks on which Olympic athletes pursue new records to the shoes, clothing and safety equipment they wear and the stadia they perform in, modern sports rely on plastics. Plastic is convenient and helps improve performance.

But major sporting events can generate up to 750,000 plastic bottles apiece. The International Olympic Committee are working with the UN Environment’s #BeatPlasticPollution and Clean Seas campaign. Rio 2016 Olympics used millions of recycled plastic bottles to produce more than 6,700 seats in the stadium. In addition, the ribbons on the medals awarded to athletes were made of 50% recycled plastic bottles. London marathon trialed the use of compostable cups. And this year Qatar is committed to delivering a carbon-neutral FIFA World Cup™.

When it comes to your own workout, whether that's at the gym (e.g. dumbbells), or on a pitch (footballs etc) - you will be encountering plastic everywhere. And what about during and post workout, from plastic water bottles, to that relaxing jacuzzi and shower. There is an energy cost to the planet.

So how can you clean up your clean and jerks, help improve your own health and the health of the planet?

Listen to today's episode for some tips to kick plastic out of your workout

If you try any, or have your own solutions. Let me know @brynachrismas @inclusiveclubpodcast

Hello,

I am Bryna, and this is Ran By Nature

Welcome to episode 26. Today I had the pleasure to chat with Lorna. Dr Lorna Young. Lorna and I are friends, and have known each other for what we think is over 25 years. We used to run together (and with her sisters) in sunny Yorkshire, back in the UK. We are both still running. We both work in science related disciplines, and we have both started a business. Today we talk about the fact that runners don’t just run. Lorna has her own podcast with her friend Nicola (Two Yorkshire Birds), and they discuss all the different interests that runners do have (they really don’t just spend their day running miles and miles). We all know the important of exercise or movement for our health. But health also has many other dimensions to it. And indeed exercise and running doesn’t have to look the same for everyone. Lorna completed her first marathon earlier this month in London (congratulations again Lorna). She really enjoyed it. Her preparation and training was not ‘typical or traditional’ though. When you think of a marathon training program, you probably think of hours and hours of running. Now I am not at all suggesting you don’t need to run. And you can just rock up at the start line of marathon with no preparation. But your preparation does not have to look like the cardboard copy of the plans you find online. We all have different bodies and approaches to training and movement. Have you taken a different approach to exercise or sport? Is there a path you have taken which is considered ‘not typical’? Hello,

Welcome to episode 25. Today I had the pleasure to chat with Soraya about exercise. When I asked Soraya to talk about exercise and fitness she wasn’t sure she had much to talk about. But as you will hear today, we all have a relationship with movement. And our experiences, emotions and thoughts around movement are all unique, and therefore, our workouts should be just as individual and unique. It really doesn’t matter what someone else is doing, you’re the only one that matters. Despite what ‘Karen’ or your left brain try’s to tell you.

Soraya has an incredible amount of self awareness, which she brings to her love of cross fit, art, writing and amazing work in empowering women and those left ‘on the outside’.  By founding All The Elements, and through other pursuits, Soraya is connecting herself and other humans to nature. And reminding us all about how wonderful this planet is, and how we all belong in the outdoors.

Hello,

Welcome to episode 24 with Jordan, Jordan Thomas, who at 24 years old won the World Karate Championship – the first time in 12 years that England had won this title. From 2016 to 2020 the focus was of course on Tokyo and the Olympics. Where Karate would be included for the first time. But Jordan took a kick to the head late on in qualifying, and got beat. He didn’t make the team. This wasn’t the first time he had faced a difficult and challenging situation. As you will hear in today’s episode Jordan has built up, and worked very hard on his mental resilience. He is also using his platform and Karate for good. To help children, by taking karate and mental health and mindfulness into schools. There are so many wonderful tips and thoughts that Jordan shares today, which I know will help you in so many different areas of life. And just a few days after World Mental Health day, I know we could all do with being a little kinder to ourselves. Practicing some gratitude, and using positive affirmations to realize just how far we have come in life. I would love to hear your feedback and questions following this episode. Welcome to episode 23 with Tasha, a runner and founder of Black Girls Do Run UK. But this is not your usual running chat. Whilst Strava and PBs do have their place in running, today we are talking about smiling and tutu’s, because not every runner is the same. Tasha is truly refreshing, such a wonderful ball of energy. And how she brings mindfulness and gratitude into her running and daily life is inspiring. I hope today can nudge you into reflecting on you running (or indeed your workout/exercise routine). Because we all tend to follow the same patterns and habits. And we rarely take time to reflect. To look in the mirror. And ask ourselves. Is this habit serving me? Great if it is. But maybe you are finding that your exercise habits no longer serve who you are, or who you want to be. I would love to hear your feedback and questions following this episode. Hello, and welcome back to the Ran by nature podcast, with me, Bryna

Ran by nature is an ethical and sustainable athleisure clothing brand helping you to actually workout. By using clothing as a vehicle for change, our purpose is to refashion and reframe the exercise and fitness space

The podcast will now be available on YouTube, so make sure you are subscribed or following there or if you prefer on your favorite podcast platform.

Have you ever stopped to think why you exercise? Not why you should exercise. But what are your reasons for moving your body? What does it bring you intrinsically? Is your current workout routine actually making you happy? Or are you doing it because you think you should? Because society is telling you that if you want to be fit, to be accepted, you need to look a certain way? And if your body looks different – you’re lazy, unsuccessful, or worse yet, you don’t belong. From hot yoga to extreme ultra events, ‘beast mode’, to ‘go hard or go home’ whether you find these ‘fitness trends’ and narratives inspiring or tiring, they are hard to ignore. But what effect is this culture having on you? Gym anxiety, harassment, disordered behaviours. How is your relationship with exercise effecting your emotional and mental health? Through solo episodes, myth busting , tips and guest podcast episodes, I am on a mission to challenge the exercise and fitness narrative. And create a sustainable movement that’s good for you, and the planet

Therefore, she is making it her mission to make therapy a safe place accessible to everyone. Given what people have had to endure in 2020, I couldn’t think of a better person to talk to on the last episode. Rebecca has so many incredible resources on her website, and Instagram @rebecca_kimberley. And always remember to reach out, ask those people around you if they are truly ok, and tell someone if you need help

Hello, and welcome to the ninth episode of the Ran by nature podcast. I am Bryna Chrismas. Each week I will be joined by a guest to discuss self-care, people-care, and planet-care, and how we can increase diversity, inclusivity and sustainability in these spaces.

This is the penultimate episode of series 1. And today I am joined by Helen, who over the last few years has transformed her career and changed the way she lives her life, launching her social enterprise ‘Living Liberte’. As a business owner, and founder of Living Liberte, Helen is passionate and determined to improve the lives of everyone by offering workshops, training and resources on healthy relationships. Through her own experience of violent domestic abuse, Helen is using her knowledge and skills, whilst researching other successful initiatives and businesses, to offer workshops in schools for children and adolescents (pre-COVID, of course). She recently won a Winston Churchill memorial fund scholarship, and has huge plans for 2021 and beyond. We do talk about domestic abuse, so if this is triggering for you, then perhaps give this episode a miss. And if you feel like it would help, take a look at www.living-liberte.com and the incredible free resources that Helen has created. You can also find Helen and Living Liberte on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter @livingliberte

Hello, and welcome to the eighth episode of the Ran By Nature podcast. I am Bryna Chrismas. Each week I will be joined by a guest to discuss self-care, people-care, and planet-care, and how we can increase diversity, inclusivity and sustainability in these spaces.

Today’s guest is Jackie. Jackie is the founder of the NGO ‘She Can Tri’, based in Afghanistan empowering women through triathlon. In 2020 she trained the first four women in Afghanistan to complete a half Ironman (1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride, and a 13.1-mile run). And was there to place the medal around Zeinab’s neck when she became the first Afghani woman to complete the Dubai 70.3. She also holds the record for completing 6 Ironman’s in 6 continents in one year. In 2021 she will launch her own clothing brand ‘One January’ to raise awareness for, and increase equality through clothing, by celebrating all those given the birthday of January 1st. Jackie has many outstanding achievements, but what I love so much about this episode is how she describes her most successful moment as those quiet times, working on and finding herself, being surrounded by loved ones. You can support She Can Tri (@shecantri), and follow along the journey, and launch of One January (@onejanuarysport)

Hello! And welcome to the third episode of the RAN BY NATURE podcast. I am Bryna Chrismas. Each week I will be joined by a guest to discuss self-care, people-care, and planet-care, and how we can increase diversity and inclusivity in these spaces.

Todays guest is Mariam Farid. Mariam is a member of the Qatar National team, representing Qatar as a 400 m hurdler. She was an ambassador for the 2019 World Championships in Doha, the first time these championships were held in the Middle East. She is also a communications student at Northwestern University in Qatar, and an entrepreneur. She very recently launched her own brand called Jama. Mariam shares a funny story, with a very important message about her first time competing in the Gulf championships. Last week we spoke about to Zainab, a hijabi rugby player. Mariam also proudly wears her scarf to compete. Do you wear a hijab in your sport? How have other people reacted to this? And how can we make other hijabi girls and women feel more comfortable to exercise and play sport? Share your story with Mariam and I.

Mariam can be found @mariam_farid on instagram, and you can view her new clothing brand @jama.qa. Hello! And welcome to the second episode of the RAN BY NATURE podcast. I am Bryna Chrismas. Each week I will be joined by a guest to discuss self-care, people-care, and planet-care, and how we can increase diversity and inclusivity in these spaces.

Todays guest is Zainab Alema. Zainab is a neonatal nurse, rugby player, mother and founder of ‘studs in the mud’ and ‘muslimah rugby’. I know, I have no ideas when she sleeps either! In this episode we talk about using courage to overcome, and navigate being a black hijabi woman playing rugby.

Would you like to make your place of work, sport, or community more inclusive? How can you make sure everyone is welcome? What kind of support system do you have around you, to ensure you can meet your goals and dreams? My favourite quotes from this episode are; ‘If you love something you will do it regardless’, and ‘it’s not about me, it’s about me doing what I can, so that the next person feels like they can achieve something’.

If you would like to connect with Zainab, or you have any feedback/comments/questions, you can find her @zeealema. And if you are interested in being part of studs in the mud and/or muslimah rugby you can connect @studsinthemud and @muslimahrugby. Hello. And welcome to the first episode of the RAN BY NATURE podcast. I am Bryna Chrismas. Each week I will be joined by a guest to discuss self-care, people-care, and planet-care, and how we can increase diversity and inclusivity in these spaces. Have you ever been the only person in the room that looks like you, had to overcome the challenge of moving to a new country, or felt confused by the ethical and sustainable fashion industry? Well, that’s exactly what I am going to discuss on todays episode with Saja Elmishri. Saja is Swedish Arab. Originally from Libya, she grew up in Sweden, and later moved to the UK. Saja has always been interested in nature, is a keen runner, and trilingual. After graduating from her textile design degree at De Montfort University Leicester, where she won the best research award for her Undergraduate thesis, she currently works as a freelance journalist, sustainability advocate, and fashion consultant. Saja recently wrote an article for eco age titled ‘We Need To Include The Middle East In The Sustainable Fashion Conversation’ (https://eco-age.com/magazine/author/saja-elmishri/). This article investigated why the Middle East is often left out of this discussion, and what we can learn by looking to both Arabian designers and consumers for a new creative perspective.

I had a great conversation with Saja, as she was so honest and open about her experiences as an Arab woman entering the world of sustainable fashion. Her enthusiasm, passion and high spirited personality really shines through. And I was delighted to have Saja as my very first guest.

If you would like to connect with Saja, or you have any feedback/comments/questions, please find her @saja_elmishri. You can follow the RAN BY NATURE podcast on Instagram @ranbynature, or if you prefer, you can email me at hello@ranbyntaure.com.
