In our book, Invent To Learn, we sought to reclaim tinkering and correct the popular perception that it was synonymous with careless futzing about. Tinkering, we argued was inspired by the possibility of materials, allowing learners to develop important skills and develop powerful ideas while intimately engaged in sophisticated projects. The maker movement promised to herald an exciting renaissance of such bricolage, often in the name of STEM, since new tools, materials, and technology would allow learners of all ages to make things with both bits and atoms.

Fifteen years later, schools really seem to have embraced cutting up cardboard, but have sadly left the bits behind again. This session is a plea to refocus our attention on the secret sauce of making and fabrication, computation. Programming computers – making things with code or making things powered by code – transforms classroom arts and crafts (not that there’s anything wrong with that) into a powerful intellectual laboratory and vehicle for self-expression. This session will explore models of computationally-rich projects, developmentally appropriate activities, and effective prompt setting.

In addition to being a popular keynote speaker at some of the world’s most prestigious education conferences, Dr. Stager is co-author of Invent To Learn – Making, Tinkering, and Engineering in the Classroom, called the “bible of the maker movement in schools,” by Larry Magid of CBS and The San Jose Mercury News. Invent To Learn has been translated into nine languages. Dr. Stager’s most recent book is Twenty Things to Do with a Computer Forward 50: Future Visions of Education Inspired by Seymour Papert and Cynthia Solomon’s Seminal Work.

An elementary teacher by training, he has taught students from preschool through doctoral studies. In 1990, Dr. Stager led professional development in the world’s first laptop schools and played a major role in the early days of online education. Gary is the founder of the Constructing Modern Knowledge summer institute for educators.

One of the great joys of hosting the Constructing Modern Knowledge summer institute is being able to share expert guest speakers with our participating educators. This episode features the imperfect, but deeply moving audio from civil rights hero and national book award winning educator Jonathan Kozol recorded at CMK in 2011. Jonathan just published his 15th and final book, An End to Inequality, and as you’ll hear in this podcast, his ideas are timeless.

Jonathan Kozol is a National Book Award-winner who abandoned his Rhodes Scholarship to teach in the still largely segregated Boston Public Schools following news of the murder of Goodman, Schwerner, and Chaney in Mississippi. He was subsequently fired for reading a Langston Hughes poem to fourth graders. That experience led to his first book, Death at an Early Age in 1967. Kozol has been urging each of us to do the right thing ever since, including as a guest speaker at Constructing Modern Knowledge!

During my most recent Australian keynoting, workshop, and consulting tour, I led a week’s worth of activities with the Victoria Academy of Teaching and Leadership, the State of Victoria’s authority for furnishing educator professional development. The work of the Academy is the gold standard for building, sustaining, and celebrating teaching excellence at a statewide level.

One of the joys of my recent collaboration was being engaged in conversation with three remarkable public school “master teachers,” on leave from the classroom to lead professional development activities for other educators. The three educators did their homework, possessed extraordinary communication skills, and came prepared to challenge my thinking. Each of these conversations was recorded and published as podcasts I am enormously proud of.

Recently, Gary was invited by Fondazione Reggio Children to lead a public seminar on education in Reggio Emilia, Italy. He has also taught children and doctoral students in Reggio Emilia.

Gary was on the advisory board of the NSF-funded project, BJC4NYC: Bringing a Rigorous Computer Science Principles Course to the Largest School System in the US. Dr. Stager also maintains the world’s largest archive of text and multimedia by Seymour Papert at The Daily Papert.

Harvard Professor Howard Gardner led a fireside chat with participants at the 14th Annual Constructing Modern Knowledge summer institute, via Zoom, in July 2023. Educators gathered for an informal conversation with one of the leading thinkers of our time. During the conversation, he clarified what he means by multiple intelligences and how that is distinct from learning styles. Gardner also discusses AI, the Reggio Emilia Approach, the value of projects, and his friend Jerome Bruner.

Dr. Gardner is the author of a delightful new book, A Synthesizing Mind: A Memoir from the Creator of Multiple Intelligences Theory. This book would make a lovely gift for the other educators, creators, and thinkers in your life.

About Howard Gardner

Howard Gardner is the John H. and Elisabeth A. Hobbs Research Professor of Cognition and Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He is also an adjunct professor of psychology at Harvard University and senior director of Harvard Project Zero. Among numerous honors, Gardner received a MacArthur Prize Fellowship and a Fellowship from the John S. Guggenheim Memorial Foundation in 1981 and 2000, respectively. In 1990, he was the first American to receive the University of Louisville’s Grawemeyer Award in Education. In recognition of his contributions to both academic theory and public policy, he has received honorary degrees from thirty-one colleges and universities, including institutions in Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Greece, Ireland, Israel, Italy, South Korea, and Spain. He has twice been selected by Foreign Policy and Prospect magazines as one of 100 most influential public intellectuals in the world. In 2011, Gardner received the Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences, and in 2015, he was chosen as the recipient of the Brock International Prize in Education. He has been elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, the National Academy of Education, and the London-based Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures, and Commerce. He serves on a number of boards, including New York’s Museum of Modern Art and the American Philosophical Society.

The author of thirty books translated into thirty-two languages, and several hundred articles, Gardner is best known in educational circles for his theory of multiple intelligences, a critique of the notion that there exists but a single human intelligence that can be assessed by standard psychometric instruments (please see multipleintelligencesoasis.org). Since the middle 1990s, Gardner has directed The Good Project, a group of initiatives, founded in collaboration with psychologists Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and William Damon, that promotes excellence, engagement, and ethics in education, preparing students to become good workers and good citizens who contribute to the overall well-being of society. Through research-based concepts, frameworks, and resources, the Project seeks to help students reflect upon the ethical dilemmas that arise in everyday life and give them the tools to make thoughtful decisions.

His newest research undertaking is a large-scale national study documenting how different groups think about the goals of college and the value of a course of study emphasizing liberal arts and sciences. The study seeks to understand how the chief constituencies of campuses—incoming students, graduating students, faculty, senior administrators, parents, alumni/ae, trustees and job recruiters—think about these changes and how they may impact the college experience in our time. Ultimately, the study aims to provide valuable suggestions of how best to provide quality, non-professional higher education in the 21st century.

In addition to being a popular keynote speaker at some of the world’s most prestigious education conferences, Gary Stager is a journalist, teacher educator, consultant, professor, software developer, publisher, and school administrator. An elementary teacher by training, he has taught students from preschool through doctoral studies. In 1990, Dr. Stager led professional development in the world’s first laptop schools and played a major role in the early days of online education. Gary is the founder of the Constructing Modern Knowledge summer institute for educators.

Dr. Stager is co-author of Invent To Learn – Making, Tinkering, and Engineering in the Classroom, called the “bible of the maker movement in schools,” by Larry Magid of CBS and The San Jose Mercury News. Invent To Learn has been translated into nine languages. Dr. Stager’s most recent book is Twenty Things to Do with a Computer Forward 50: Future Visions of Education Inspired by Seymour Papert and Cynthia Solomon’s Seminal Work.

When Jean Piaget wanted to better understand how children learn mathematics, he hired Seymour Papert. When Dr. Papert wanted to create a high-tech alternative learning environment for incarcerated at-risk teens, he hired Gary Stager. This work was the basis for Gary’s doctoral dissertation and documented Papert’s most-recent institutional research project.

Dr. Stager’s work has earned a Ph.D. in Science and Mathematics Education and he collaborated on a project that won a Grammy Award. Recently, Gary was invited by Fondazione Reggio Children to lead a public seminar on education in Reggio Emilia, Italy. He has also taught children and doctoral students in Reggio Emilia.

Gary was on the advisory board of the NSF-funded project, BJC4NYC: Bringing a Rigorous Computer Science Principles Course to the Largest School System in the US. Dr. Stager also maintains the world’s largest archive of text and multimedia by Seymour Papert at The Daily Papert.
