On this day in 1945, During World War II, about 30,000 U.S. Marines landed on Iwo Jima.
Despite its size, Iwo Jima was considered to have great tactical importance. There were two airfields on the island and control of them were important to America's defeat of Japan. Over 6000 Marines and over 21000 Japanese died in a little over a month before the USA took complete control of Iwo Jima.
