This three-part series tells the story of the historic day the Seniors defeated Ajax Football Club in a thriller to win the 2019 Premier C Grand Final. It was the final chapter to their undefeated season. We bring to you some of the many tales of the day via interviews with players and coaches.
Michael Johnstone has been Monty’s right-hand man for the last eight years. He ran the backline for the Seniors last year – what may have been the greatest season in CYs history, and he’s also the father of club champion, Tom Johnstone.I sat down via zoom with the great man as we chatted about his backline, the crazy week leading up to the big dance, that famous prelim spray and enjoying the celebrations with his son and the boys who he’s watched over time develop into footballers and people.
Sam Callard was weathering the storm of a late Ajax surge with his teammates in defence. He was a part of the great side that went undefeated in 2019 and his name is now front and centre in the Premier C Team of the Year. Callard embraced the day, the tumultuous week leading up and the celebrations afterwards, and I had the pleasure of hearing all about the stories with the man himself..and now you can too.
Cometh the moment, cometh the man. It was a quintessential captain's goal that sealed the Premiership for the Seniors. On a day where only hours before, the Reserves won their Grand Final, the stage was set for another CYs flag. And co-captain Tom Johnstone launched the ball into the goals at Trevor Barker Oval to seal the Club's fourth flag for 2019.
