This episode has a video component to it as Ricky, Piotr and Erwann watch old edits and discuss their significance and what they learn from them. Erwann shares "Drift," the first action short he cut; Ricky a Halloween promo for the Starz network and Piotr a Maths Pathway awareness documentary. You can watch the episode on our Youtube channel. FYI - We've shared Ricky and Erwann's full edits, which are under a minute and about 30 seconds of Piotr's because it's 16 minutes long.

What's an edit that you're proud of and why?

Episode 21 and Erwann is back from his vacation! He shares with Piotr and Rick how it’s been cutting a TV series for the first time. Erwann talks about how he got the job, creating the films grammar, working with a progressive shortage of coverage and other challenges, plus working with a composer for the first time. The discussion leads Piotr into mentioning the latest video from Every Frame a Painting on YouTube about sustained two-shots. There’s a little back and forth about the evolution of shot length and the way actors convey emotion. From there they get into Ricky putting up sound proofing in his new home editing suite. Then Erwann asks the guys to share one movie/ show from the watchlist that week and Ricky gives three...

What’s your favorite TV series right now?

In episode 19, Ricky and Piotr start off by making fun of Erwann then talk about Camerimage International Film Festival in Torún, Poland. Hopefully Ricky can attend with Piotr this November. After that they give shout-outs to podcast listeners Khalid and Robert for sending in constructive feedback and thanks. If you guys are reading this description you are much appreciate. Piotr and Ricky then make fun of Erwann in the Olympics and discuss how mind-blowing post-production must be for the games. This brings up a 2005 article, that Ricky found written by Paul Hirsch, ACE reminiscing about The Droid Olympics, a competition amongst assistant edits in the late 70’s to early 80s. A fun look back at a hidden time in film history. Piotr then talks about how he used the Milanote app to break down a possible film project into individual cards on a digital board, similar to how great editors like Walter Murch will use photos and post-it notes to see a films structure. After which Piotr mentions that LOST, his favorite TV Shows is now on Netflix and Ricky talks about how great of an edit The Bear S3 Episode 2 is. In this quick episode, Piotr uses learning to ride his electric unicycle BACKWARDS as an analogy to discuss with Ricky the way we learn editing. The words intentionally, incidentally, experimentally and accidentally are thrown around, but what it boils down to is that being a good editor isn't something you learn in a book; It's something that comes with years of doing it repeatedly; finding out new things along the way by accident or experimentation. Also, in this episode we hear about Ricky's house-moving whoas, his trip to Copenhagen and watching Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation. Plus, Piotr mentions the Polish Netflix series, 1670.

Can you ride a unicycle backwards?

Episode 11 finds Ricky, Piotr and Erwann start off talking about the trailer Ricky’s cutting for a feature film with no dialogue. To title card or not to title card? Erwann, who’s cut many trailers for French TV and action-films, gives advice and insight on cutting a compelling and honest trailer. The dudes go down a rabbit hole of dishonest trailers, trailers that are better than the films and then, surprisingly, YouTube watch-time. There’s talk of maybe changing the podcast to “Trailer Talk.” Then Erwann leads a conversation about The Go-To-Editor (not a sponsor) and how professional development programs like it and others positively impacted their lives and careers. It’s more than just improving your skills, there’s a community ripe with new friendships and professional connections, People! And surprise! We talk about imposter syndrome! Ricky and Erwann mention how it’s anxiety inducing breaking the ice at meet-ups and talking to editors/ directors you admire. Per-usual, they wrap the episode with watch lists; Ricky - Mad God and Mississippi Burning; Erwann - Rapid Fire, Ghost Busters: Frozen Empire and Bad Boys: Ride or Die and Piotr reads a book: Humiliated and Insulted by Fyodor Dostoevsky.

Episode 10 - we’re into double digits folks!

Erwann and Ricky fill in Piotr on meeting up in Paris. They go deep on discussing their thoughts about Piotr’s latest Cut to the Point video: “Why Editing Feedback is Key for your Film (Especially if You’re the Director).” The guys go back and forth on whether directors should even edit their own films and how they’ve convinced directors to work with them in the past. Piotr edited the short film he wrote/directed and Erwann asks if, in hindsight, Piotr should’ve had someone else edit it. The guys then touch on their process before diving into the edit. Then they comment how Cate Blanchett was named jury president of the main competition at Camerimage 2024, the film fest that celebrates cinematographers. Did you know she considers herself “middle class?” The dudes riff on that, too. Then they get into movie watch lists - Piotr watches Punch Drunk Love and the Polish film, Sonata (spoiler alert), Ricky is still watching Fallout and Erwann saw The Old Oak and cried. To conclude, Piotr and Erwann talk about American Fiction which Ricky still hasn’t seen. What are you watching?

In episode 9, Piotr is on vacation leaving Ricky and Erwann to fend for themselves. Ricky talks about currently working on his first narrative feature and Erwann shares his experience cutting promo trailers for a French TV station. They both concur on how by starting to work on their own projects and low/ no budget projects it helped them become better problem solvers. Plus, Erwann and Ricky get into how their career paths haven't followed a straight line and that project constraints are a good thing. Then they wrap it with their watch list from the week: Ricky - Furiosa & Late Night with the Devil; Erwann - Concrete Utopia.
