BOLD(ish): Recent Episodes

Marissa Boyd

BOLD(ish) is a podcast about reframing the narrative on your life, learning from others who are doing the same, and finding resources to help you on your way. When you feel like you're at rock bottom it's hard feel bold but sometimes all you need is one moment to make a move that will change everything. You might not feel confident, you might actually be terrified. That's okay - sometimes being "bold-ish" is enough.

On this episode we talk about how focusing your energy on the wrong things is the easiest way to feel anxious and negative about your life and what may have happened to you in the past. When you give too many f*cks, sometimes you end up making life harder.

I started thinking this way after reading The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson. Check out his website here.

When you experience a time of massive change in your life it is hard to have to move forward while also simultaneously learning how to be a new version of yourself.

I learned very quickly that certain boundaries had to be put in place in order for me to be able to figure out how to do that. It's very hard because, often times, boundaries are seen as a negative thing but when done right they can be extremely helpful and healthy.

First you need to understand that not every needs access to you, just like you don't need access to everyone else. It's a hard to understand but it is okay - that's life!

When you decide that some boundaries need to be put in place remember that it isn't wrong to stand firm and not compromise. There are some situations where compromise may be okay but, in most cases, that isn't true. It's not selfish to do - in fact, it will help in the long run.

Remember that we are all human and these are hard conversations to have - it's good to come from a positive place and remember that you can respect someone as a person, while also see a need for healthy boundaries to be set.

Often times when we feel overwhelmed and stressed it is because we are allowing people and thing access to our time when they shouldn't have that access. When we put boundaries in place we are freeing our lives from the stressors that arise in those scenarios.

Happy New Year!

New year, new you right? It's nice feeling like you're starting off fresh BUT sometimes the new year also brings up feelings of doubt. Maybe you're not where you want to be or you feel like you made too many goals last year and didn't accomplish anything.

When looking back at last year it's easy to feel like you didn't do enough but here are some things to consider:

1] Were the goals you had completely new?

A lot of times we set goals and have no idea how to really accomplish them. We are learning along the way so of course things are going to be difficult. We aren't perfect and the only way we can keep moving forward is to try to be consistent as best as we can. Take a look back and ask yourself what you did well and keep doing those things. Recognize areas where you fell short and find a way to improve.

2] Are you being authentic to who you really are?

Don't set goals just because someone else is doing it! Your lifestyle and personality are totally different from every single other human on this planet. Make sure the goals you have are something you truly want to achieve and you're doing it in a way that is true to you.

3] Have you gotten real with yourself about why you missed the mark?

It's hard to reflect on area where you feel like you have failed but, in doing so, you actually might learn something. A lot of the time we feel like we lack motivation and that's why we don't get things done. I've learned that maybe we are just really overwhelmed with life that it's hard to accomplish anything else. That's okay! It happens to all of us. Maybe there is something you can take off of your plate or there's a way you can rearrange your schedule to make hitting your goals easier.

In 2022 I hope you are able to grow in ways your never thought possible, rest when you need to, and enjoy the journey!

It's the Monday after Thanksgiving and the holiday had me really reflecting on a lot from the past few years.

The holidays can be amazing but they can also cause a lot of stress and trigger some pretty unhappy things. We hosted Thanksgiving at my place and I realized in that moment that I was perfectly content in my life. I felt happy and at peace and that isn't usual for me.

What I hope for you is that if you are going through a tough time or traumatic experience that you would be able to recognize these moments when they come and really savor them and remember them so you can hold on to them when times may be tough.

Going from a revenge mindset to a growth mindset is hard but it's one of the best things you can do for yourself in your journey back from rock bottom.

Right after my divorce almost everything I did was fueled by anger and rage and it ate me alive. I realized quickly that I am not this person who wants to be successful for the sake of revenge or proving others wrong.

Realistically, do they really care? Probably not. But in the process you will make decisions for all of the wrong reasons.

If you can switch your mindset from anger/revenger to truly tapping in to finding yourself and your purpose once you start making decisions the growth and results from that will be so much sweeter because you are doing it for yourself and not anyone else.

Whew! The past couple of weeks has been hard with my son gone to visit his dad. It's quiet in my house and I have been alone with my thoughts... which can be terrifying. But it's also been a great reminder about how important it is to do some real self care.

Not the trendy kind where you take bubble baths and long strolls through Target to solve your problems - but the real kind, where you dig deep and try to heal.

It's not easy but it is so important to do and, in reality, self care is truly messy. Learning to love and care for yourself after you have had a traumatic experience is hard.

One way I have overcome a lot is by learning my Enneagram personality type. I know these things can be controversial but learning this has done so much for me in understanding who I am and why I operate in the way that I do. Because I have learned these personality traits I can recognize the positives, learn to adjust the negatives, and use this information to heal when moving forward.

It's not perfect, and never will be, but it's so necessary to do the work to move forward and grow.

I hope this episode encourages you to dig into messy self care and learn to love yourself the way you were always meant to.

You ever get tired of answering so many questions about WHY you do the things that you enjoy? WHY you make the decisions you are making? Sometimes it can be so frustrating to feel like you have to constantly explain yourself but, guess what? "Because I want to" is a perfectly acceptable answer and the only reason you need to give.

On this week's episode we chat about how these questions from people can cause you to second guess your decisions and that it is totally okay to be confident in your decisions even when other around you may question them.

Time to move forward - where do we start? I remember feeling so overwhelmed with this when I had to start over post divorce. Let's be honest, I still feel that way often but it's far more manageable now when using these tactics:

  1. Write it all down. Some people call this a brain dump. Get everything OUT of your head and somewhere that you can actually see it. Just that simple step can help tremedously.

  2. Rank these things in order of importance. What is the most important? What needs to happen now? What can happen tomorrow/next week/next year?

  3. What is ONE thing you can do today to get closer to your goal? Bite sized pieces here.

Now that you have your one thing - can you break this down further?

For example: my number one was to find a job. Then I broke that down even further - what type of job? Salary? Benefits? What does my schedule look like?

It took me three different jobs to find something that fit everything I wanted in a career. You may not get it on the first try but don't ever stop until you find exactly what you are looking for! Life is too short to settle.

Did this help you at all? I would love to hear your feedback here:

Two years agoI packed up my life and moved back home, into my parents house, after deciding to get a divorce. It's a decision I never wanted to have to make but it was my only option. Relationships take two people who want to do everything to make it work, and unfortunately I was the only one who wanted to try.

So I sent my mom a text and let her know what was going on. I knew that once I sent that text things were going to start to happen and I would be headed home - once mom knows, that's it!

I had never felt so low in my life. I was scared, embarrassed, and mad at myself for even being in that situation in the first place. I was 28 years old and I had given up everything for my relationship. I was away from my family, left my career, and doing everything for someone who didn't care about me at all.

I thought leaving was going to be the hard part, over the last two years I have had to take a real look at myself and come to grips with the decisions I made that put me in that situation. Decisions that were for other people, and not myself. Decisions that were influenced heavily by society, and not trusting my gut.

In my lowest of lows I sent that text to my mom with one second of strength - trusting myself to do what I knew what the right choice but was also going to be the most difficult and devastating.

Sometimes when your back is against the wall like that you have no other option but to trust yourself. But sometimes that is the hardest thing to do. You might not feel strong, confident, or bold in that moment but finally deciding to trust yourself is one of the boldest things you can do.

That decision is the catapult that brought me here and I am so thankfully you have decided to listen to my story and join me on this journey. We are going to dive into a lot of what I have learned in the past 10 years and I hope that you will find resources and the courage to be bold along the way!

Welcome to BOLDish! Confused? Probably!

I changed it up... well... I didn't actually change it - I decided to follow through with my original vision for this podcast. When I first started I had a BIG dream to create a podcast and community for people making bold moves so we could have a place for motivation, inspiration, and actual resources to help us along the way.

But I got overwhelmed and scared and second guessed everything so I put out a podcast I didn't love. STORY OF MY LIFE - falling back into old patterns, "safe" choices, and not going for it because.. well, "what if?"

Instead of forcing myself forward I decided to stop and just go for it. Because that's what this is all about... one bold move can change everything.

I hope you will hang on for the ride! I don't have it figured out yet, I'll probably mess up and doubt myself A LOT along the way, but that's how life is right?
