In this episode, I hang out with Archie Summers. Archie is a singer/songwriter, and lover of random facts. He was introduced to music and the guitar through playing the song “In My Place” by Coldplay on expert mode in Guitar Hero. His formative years were spent writing with his first band called Ill Spector. His writing routines are extremely casual, but he likes to consume massive amounts of random information. Picking up his guitar, strumming, and then immediately setting it down. Not overthinking it, saving the analytical and methodical side for later to finish the song. His advice for artists: Don’t try to be friends with people you don’t like. Know that it’s okay to chill and that you don’t have to grind all the time. Also don’t stress the creative process, and know your path. In this episode, I hang out with Fauster. Fauster is an eclectic/experimental artist, multi-instrumentalist, and producer. He shares how he learned musical composition at an early age. By listening to music and then replicating what he hears in GarageBand to better understand song structure. “Playing the computer” as he likes to call it. He’s an avid fan of the 22 year old video game Super Smash Brothers Melee. Watching content on YouTube to playing it competitively online. As he says, “it’s like jazz.” Fauster likes to make music that he wants to listen to. Taking from many different genres to hear the blend he wants. One of his favorite venues is the Ryman 2. He recommends artists to go to shows. One for the inspiration. And two to meet people and be a part of the scene. Also don’t be afraid to reach out and set something up with people you want to work with. Influences like Miles Davis, Lil Wayne, Aphex Twin, Kanye West, Clifford Brown, Radiohead, MF Doom, and Animal Collective. In this episode, I hang out with Nick Giosa and Cole Gardiner of the band Blemish. Blemish is a metal band with distinct riffs, scorching vocals, primal screams, and grooves as if it was a goblin under the bridge. Listen to learn more about Nick's influences from soundtracks by Danny Elfman and Tim burton films. A dark edge, a silent tone, and a sense of the macabre lingers in the world Nick creates his music from. Find out his songwriting process and his favorite scent of candle. Cole is laid back, easy going, and fun, but behind the mic and on the bass, the goblin comes out! Storm patterns and weather systems inspire his creativity, especially tornados. Learning to scream as an actor in a haunted house for 8 hours a day enabled him to use it in his music. From being in a band they've learned it's okay to say no to a show and the songs you think aren't your best work end up being the popular ones. Keep your head up, know its going to be okay, and choose your friends wisely. Influences like The Beatles, Black Sabbath, Blink 182, Type 0 Negative, Nine Inch Nails, The Cure, Pantera, Deftones, City Morgue, and Helmet. In this episode, I hang out with Kelton Young. Kelton is a guitarist, singer, and recently stand-up comedian. It’s the smallness of life that he appreciates and tries to capture through his music. Not becoming cynical or lost in a mindless drivel of pessimism. He enjoys his internet tangents, finding simple things to be moved by. Like a baby's first words or a father returning home from war. One of his goals is to listen to every song, but in Dream Wave, he writes and performs dream pop. Dream Wave is steeped in slowcore, the artsy music scene reminiscent of the 2010-2014 era of Indie bands. Gentle, but emotional, his melodies and words come with a nostalgic feeling. Spontaneous and adventurous, Kelton will often travel the globe at the drop of a hat. Honest, intentional, and determined he creates a vibe that lets your guard down while taking you away. In this episode, I hang out with Christina Coleman. Christina is a photographer, set designer, and lover of stop motion, claymation, and cars. The analytical meets creative, Christina is an organized hype person in her artistic endeavors. A person who loves the car, but hates the road. A 1969 Nissan Datsun 240z is her ideal. Smooth round headlights with hard edges, similar aesthetics are found in her photographs. Her photography could be described as a familiar, comfortable, dreamlike state mixing hard and soft surfaces, especially triangles. She loves film photography because it slows her down, making her consider every aspect carefully. Listen to find out what gear she uses. She describes how a lot of photographers keep their gear secret and don't discuss their photography rate openly. How information in the photography community can create a surge of traffic to random places or things deemed important. She describes hosting house shows to get to know people when she first moved here. Pre-covid house shows with people packed like sardines, the steam, the smoke alarms beeping, and the floors bouncing. Christina shares the importance of recognizing your version of what you do and pushing yourself to do a little bit more than you think you can. We talk about how genuine the people are in Nashville and how this community wants to see you succeed. She gives advice on working with major labels and indie labels. Things to remember, don't get all mad and bitter because someone else achieved their goal. Their success is not a reflection of your success or lack of success. Different timelines, different paths. Finally we talk about the joys of sitting in silence. Imagining things while sitting, creating in your mind's eye, listening to the small still voice within, quietly working through it. Noah Pope was the first episode of 2022. Christina Coleman is the first episode of 2023. Things really do come full circle. Enjoy!

In this episode, I hang out with Love Montage. He is a singer, multi-instrumentalist, blog writer, and person with a vast imagination. He takes DIY bedroom budget pop to the max, efficiently, without sacrificing charm. Influences like The Strokes, Alabama Shakes, Mac Demarco, The Flaming Lips, Sam Cook, Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, The Black Keys, Guided By Voices, and Gorillaz. We talk about growing up with satellite TV and cable. For me, CartoonNetwork was channel 34, for him it was G1-8. We discuss overcoming the vulnerabilities one is faced with when putting out their art. He talks about functional fashion, how he organizes his clothing, and the importance of a personal uniform. From Lyft corporate to restaurants, he has worked both. He recommends newcomer artists to get a service industry job to get introduced to the city. More artists are going to be in restaurants. Whereas corporate can lead to a dead end. His songwriting is as practical as his attire, writing about imaginary places, not about feelings. We talk about how melodies in hip hop changed after Kanye West’s 808s and Heartbreaks. Reading Magic Treehouse books to the D&K reference books as a kid. Movie inspirations like the Ridley Scott's Alien series. Enjoy
