While the number of pro athletes to come out as LGBTQ has seen a notable increase over the last several years, the world of professional sports still has a way to go to become more inclusive and welcoming to the LGBTQ community. From the Anti-Trans policies many leagues still hold to the commonplace homophobic language on the fields, today’s athletes continue to face challenges and discrimination. Join us for this panel discussion as we talk to three out professional athletes about the challenges they’ve faced and how they hope to change the game for good.
National City Councilmember Marcus Bush joins San Diego Pride for a live Q&A. Born to an African-American father and a Mexican-American mother, Marcus Bush grew up in National City, attending Lincoln Acres Elementary, Granger Junior High, and Sweetwater High School (Class of 2006). He currently lives with his wife Marilyn and children in National City, where he bought his first home and serves as a councilmember. Marcus Bush is the first openly bisexual elected official in San Diego County.

City of Carlsbad Councilmember Cori Schumacher joins San Diego Pride for a live Q&A. Cori Schumacher currently serves as a councilmember for the City of Carlsbad where she lives with her partner, Maria. Cori is also a three-time world longboard surfing champion and became the first openly gay world surfing champion in 2010.

October is LGBT History Month and we're kicking it off by having a conversation with Lambda Archives of San Diego Head Archivist Joyce Gabiola! Learn more about Lambda Archives and why collecting and preserving our history is a social justice issue. The mission of the Lambda Archives of San Diego is to collect, preserve, and share the history of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people in San Diego, Northern Baja California and Imperial County region.
Hello Trans/GNC Community and Allies! To keep everyone safe, we weren't able to bring our community together in celebration for Transgender Day of Empowerment in April. However, founder Tracie Jada O'Brien felt it was important to honor the individuals who would have received awards for their gifts of time and talent to the community. Join us for the San Diego Transgender Day of Empowerment Honors with Tracie Jada O'Brien as we celebrate trans excellence and honor our #TDOE awardees. We'll be announcing our awardees for the following awards: Youth Award, Community Service Award, and Special Recognition Award.
Every year, San Diego Pride accepts nominations from the community for the annual presentations of the Spirit of Stonewall Awards. The awards recognize individuals who contribute significantly to the LGBTQ community through their leadership, activism, and fundraising efforts. Inspirational Relationship: A friendship, familial bond, or intimate relationship whose love, strength, work, and commitment to LGBTQ equality embodies the humanity of our community. Our 2020 Spirit of Stonewall Inspirational Relationship award goes to Joyce Marieb & Linda Barufaldi. Introduction: Joyce and Linda were born a block and a half from each other in a small town in Western Massachusetts. While friends, their eight year age difference kept them in different circles until they were both graduate students in theology/philosophy in Boston. By then, their ages made much less difference, and they fell in love. Both had worked separately and continued to work together politically regarding civil rights, the peace movement, Second Wave feminism, LGBTQ issues, poverty, electoral politics, anti-racism education, and environmental, and immigration issues. They have never met a fight for justice they didn’t like.

The awards recognize individuals who contribute significantly to the LGBTQ community through their leadership, activism, and fundraising efforts. Stonewall Champion of Pride Award: An individual who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in the LGBT community over an extended period of years with consideration to service to San Diego Pride. Our 2020 Spirit of Stonewall Stonewall Champion of Pride award goes to Bixby Marino-Kibbee. Introduction: Bixby Marino-Kibbee is a queer, non-binary trans person and a licensed clinical social worker. They are the Program Director for the Center for Gender-Affirming Care at Rady Children’s Hospital. They have also worked in mental healthcare for the past fifteen years. Bixby was born and raised in San Diego but spent ten years living and working on the East Coast in Virginia and in Boston before moving back to San Diego in 2011. As a mental health clinician, Bixby has worked with individuals across the lifespan in a variety of settings.

Stonewall Philanthropy Award: A group or organization which may or may not identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender, but which has diligently raised funds to support the LGBT community over an extended period of years and/or has made an exceptional contribution in the past year. Our 2020 Spirit of Stonewall Stonewall Philanthropy award goes to John Ealy. Introduction: John Ealy is the owner of a restaurant group that includes a local San Diego restaurant in Mission Hills, Harley Gray Kitchen & Bar. A large part of his intention with opening Harley Gray was to be a bigger participant and influence in the community and particularly in the LGBTQ community of which he is a proud member. Philanthropy and giving back have been a part of his personal and business life from the beginning when he opened his first restaurant at the age of 24.
The tech sector is known for its innovation and its disruption of traditional modes of free market operation. But, what does that mean for the employees that work within the tech sector? We take a look at the tech sector in San Diego and the way that people who live at the intersections of marginalized identities have contributed and engaged in it to achieve equality within their companies. David Whittaker of Qualcomm will host a panel of wonderful LGBTQ employees from top tech sector companies that are engaging locally.
Every year, before the San Diego Pride Parade, the Front Runners & Walkers of San Diego host the Pride 5K to benefit San Diego Pride's programs and the San Diego LGBT Community Center's Youth Housing Project. The awards recognize individuals who contribute significantly to the LGBTQ community through their leadership, activism, and fundraising efforts. Friend of Pride: An individual who does not identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender, but who has stalwartly supported the LGBT community over an extended period of years and/or has made an exceptional contribution in the past year. Our 2020 Spirit of Stonewall Friend of Pride award goes to David and Jessica Mier. Introduction: Since moving to the Uptown community, David and Jessica Mier have been dedicated to supporting San Diego’s diverse LGBTQ+ community in an effort to make a more inclusive environment for all San Diegans. While certainly proud of their other personal and professional accolades and community involvement, the Miers are most proud of their volunteer work honoring our Latinx and LGBTQ+ communities by advocating for fair, equitable, and inclusive policies and practices. Both are active members of the Stonewall Citizens’ Patrol (where Jessica is the secretary), members of MANA de San Diego (where David is a board member), and both are actively involved with the Hillcrest Town Council.

The awards recognize individuals who contribute significantly to the LGBTQ community through their leadership, activism, and fundraising efforts. Community Service: An individual who is recognized as an up-and-coming leader within the community or whose contribution to the community in the past year was of particular significance. Our 2020 Spirit of Stonewall Community Service award goes to Damon J. Shearer. Introduction: Damon J. Shearer has never considered himself an activist, despite his many accomplishments. He was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, and his journey in civil engagement and activism began when he was a participant in the Detroit Summer Youth Program. Under the tutelage of the late civil rights leader Grace Lee Boggs, Damon learned that everyone has the power to be an agent for change, even with the smallest of actions. Damon took this lesson with him into adulthood. Like many others, Damon joined the San Diego Black LGBTQ Coalition in search of a connection with other Queer Black folks. In 2018, Damon was elected president of the coalition, and this year marks his second term in that office. Under his leadership, the San Diego Black LGBTQ Coalition has flourished into a hub for Queer Black life in San Diego and a fierce advocate for the Black LGBTQIA+ community.
June 12, 2020 marks the fourth anniversary of the shooting at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando. Local LGBTQ Latinx community members join in conversation to memorialize the 49 lives lost that day and discuss the impacts the tragedy had on our community. We will be joined by Fernando López, Executive Director of San Diego Pride, Caroline Dessert, CEO of the San Diego LGBT Community Center, Gloria Cruz, Director of Community Engagement & Policy Advisor for the Office of Council President Georgette Gómez, Ady Huertas, Co-Chair of the San Diego LGBTQ LatinX Coalition, and Nick Serrano, San Diego Pride’s Board Co-Chair.

Spirit Service Award: A group or organization which may or may not identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender, but which has stalwartly supported the LGBT community over an extended period of years and/or has made an exceptional contribution in the past year. Our 2020 Stonewall Service Award goes to Casa Arcoíris. Introduction: Casa Arcoíris formally opened its shelter for LGBT+ migrants in February 2019, after several months of supporting and housing the large numbers of migrants arriving to Tijuana en masse during a migratory crisis that grabbed international headlines and completely inundated Tijuana’s social services. A committed team of local activists and a strong network of binational organizations have been key to ensuring that Casa Arcoíris residents receive not only housing, but also psychological support, medical attention, social services and comprehensive legal services from LGBT+ professionals.

We know that these are unprecedented times for our LGBTQ community and the world at large. If you're in search of a new job, a resume is crucial. Taylor will provide his insight and strategic tips and tricks to help you craft the best resume and highlight your skillset. Additionally, Taylor will address the unique concerns and challenges of LGBTQ employees and jobseekers. Workshop participants will also have the opportunity to have their resume reviewed by one of our Pride volunteers post-event.
