We Talkin' 'Bout Practice?: Recent Episodes

Jon Vallejo

That's right, we talkin' 'bout practice because that's all most of us can do. Talk. Here you'll get a fan-sided perspective on the events happening in the world of sports. Trades, lockouts, game recaps. All feelings, no facts. Missed an easy alley? Bricked a wide-open 3? Failed to hit Tyreek Hill even though he was wide open on that post route? Unacceptable. Were you surprised that Barcelona took El Clasico 4-0? Yeah, so am I.

Real Madrid didn't even look like they belonged on the same pitch. Barcelona controlled possession and pace. This could have very well been an 8-0 final. Terrible showing from Real Madrid.

UFC London was worthy of being a PPV Event. These fights were incredible and just about every fight on the main card finished via KO or submission.

Yes, the Deshaun Watson trade was huge. It immediately makes the Browns a contender. Here's the thing: Browns fans are supposedly abandoning ship because they cannot morally support someone like Deshaun Watson.  The reality is that fans are fickle as are most people. They will return once the Browns start making playoff runs and potentially win a Super Bowl.  The Browns were missing THE GUY at QB and now they have on of those players considered to be THAT GUY.  Fans will come back because they love a redemption story.  Most importantly, they'll come back because they like it when their team wins.  It's a harsh thing to say, but it is the reality of fandom.

NFL Free Agency is in full swing and it's no surprise to see big names making moves. One of those names? Von Miller. Von signed a 6 year/$120M deal with #BillsMafia , with $51.5M of that being fully guaranteed. Von Miller might be the missing piece from a defense that was already stacked with guys like Tre'Davious White at CB, Ed Oliver at DT, Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer at Safety.

The Tampa Bay Bucs aren't far behind. After GOAT Tom Brady decided to unretire this past weekend, the Bucs signed Chris Godwin to a 3-year $60M extension, with $40M fully guaranteed. His sure hands and crisp route running is definitely something Brady and the Bucs wanted to lock in for this upcoming season.

Russell Wilson wants to play until he's...45? Yeah, according to his introductory press conference, Russell Wilson wants to play another 10-12 years and win 3-4 Super Bowls. He's 33 right now. It's not unimaginable considering he rarely takes big hits, even for a mobile quarterback. Aaron Rodgers is a guy who will be playing into his 40s that uses his mobility to create space and plays, so it's not unheard of. The Broncos do have weapons at WR for Wilson to throw it. This season should be fun if you're a Broncos fan.

New Orleans seems to be the front-runner in the Deshaun Watson Sweepstakes. They've already met twice and have restructured 4 contracts in order to create $29.9M of cap space in order to bring in the QB. So much for that Baker Mayfield letter...

Last night was a historic night in the NBA.

Karl-Anthony Towns dropped 60 points on the Spurs last night while also amassing 17 rebounds. Check the stat line:

19/31 FGs, 15/16 FT, 7/11 from 3, 17 boards and 3 assists.

Cut him some slack on the assists. The kid was busy putting up 60.

The Timberwolves have been off my radar for a few years, but with the young trio they have a chance to make some noise in the payoffs/play-in tournament. Added stability of talent staying and the same coach for the past couple years that's running an offense better suited for KAT is what's made all the difference.

NFL News

Deshaun Watson has quite a few teams interested in him. Today, Tuesday March 15th he will be talking to the Cleveland Browns. It seems the Panthers and the Saints also want in on the Deshaun Watson Sweepstakes.

The Falcons also want to trade for Watson. They may be the dark horse in this race that can pull it off. This is getting interesting.

PSG. Real Madrid. Massive Collapse.

The French side collapse on the international stage yet again.

It's not enough that PSG is losing Kylian Mbappe to Real later this year, but they also felt the need to lose in spectacular fashion to the team for which he will be playing next year.

PSG had a great first half and some missed opportunities (Madrid had some close opportunities as well) on goals called back due to offsides. The 2nd half was a completely different story and by minute 60 you could not recognize the PSG team on the field. You would think a different team showed up to play than the one from the first half. Of course, the mistake by Donnarumma that led to the first Madrid goal is unacceptable. You cannot make that kind of mistake, play that careless when playing away.

If you've seen this PSG team before, then maybe this collapse wasn't as surprising to you and the fact that they looked like a different team that easily capitulates is par for the course.

Do the Packers need to win Super Bowl LVII in order to justify the contract they extended Aaron Rodgers? It's not guaranteed he will stay there the entire 4 years. For as exceptional as Aaron Rodgers has been on the field, he's just played it safe in the playoffs. It seems as though he's more worried about his passer rating and TD/INT ratio than winning games.

Aaron, sometimes making the risky play is the best play. Aaron Rodgers talent is too good to be thrown away during the playoffs ensuring he's making the safest play possible. No one wants reckless QB play, but they do want - no, they need you - to take SOME chances.

NFL Rumors/Trades/Retirements?

Cowboys said they would release Amari Cooper in order to save $16M of cap space and there are teams out there that are willing to trade for him if they can restructure his 5-year/$100M deal before his 2022 Salary of $20M becomes fully guaranteed March 20th.

Colts are not re-signing Pro Bowl LT Eric Fischer. Who will protect Wentz? I think he's as good as gone. Best for both to move in.

Are the Packers trading Jordan Love? They say they won't, but the truth is the sooner they trade him, the higher the value they'll get in return. No one will want a QB 4 years down the line with limited playing experience. Green Bay is just posturing. They need to trade him and get some value now.

Russell Wilson Soap Opera

What's better than the Aaron Rodgers Soap Opera? The Russell Wilson Drama in Seattle. Well, he's finally gone. However, a big driving factor for the trade was loss of trust. His teammates felt he checked out of the 2021 season. His organization was tired of the leaks coming from his camp about how unhappy he was. The writing was on the wall. You can't have the leader of your team not be trusted by both the players and the organization. He had to go. Can't wait to see what he does in Denver.

What's going on with Aaron Donald?

At the Rams Super Bowl celebration, he was all about running it back. However, not long before the Super Bowl started there were reports that he wanted to retire. Hey, he says he's doing it for his kids, and I can't fault the man for that.

Rundown:

Aaron Rodgers

Calvin Ridley

Russell Westbrook Harassment

DIPO Day and Heat Nation

Tell me that you're surprised about the Aaron Rodgers signing of a 4-year, $200M deal with $153M guaranteed.

I'm sure the Packers fans are ecstatic. They just guaranteed $153M to a quarterback that wins in the regular season. I guess as long as you make it to the playoffs and consistently underperform once you get there is enough for a fanbase? They're probably right. It beats years of being a Browns or Dolphins fan.

Aaron was smart to stay. He's in a division where they play the Lions, Bears and Vikings 2x each during the course of the season. That almost always guarantees them a good record and top seed. Why would he leave the comfort of beating up on franchises that will never figure it out? He may surpass Peyton as the greatest regular season QB of all time. At least I hope he does, because at this point that's all he is. As an Aaron Rodgers fan, that hurts to write.

Aaron Rodgers wasn't the only news in the NFL. Calvin Ridley has been suspended for the 2022 season for gambling on his team's games while in Florida and away from the team. Calvin screwed up. He should have done it the right way: By having a proxy bet on his behalf. If you think that this isn't happening right now in sports, then you're only lying to yourself. I'm more curious what the NFL investigation into Stephen Ross's alleged offers to Brian Flores of $100K for every loss in the 2019 season.

There were also NBA news if you can believe it.

Russell Westbrook is tired of the harassment. I don't blame the guy. Just because you're a public figure doesn't mean you should face death threats. He can't even take his kids to home games because of how ugly it's gotten. Want to blame someone? Blame father time for Westbrook's skills falling off the cliff and LeBron for doing what LeBron does: Getting everything he wants and then leaving an organization in shambles.

Even better NBA news?

It was DIPO Day yesterday and the Miami HEAT won 123-106. Oladipo gave them a solid 15 minutes and 11 points. This HEAT team is for real and a tough out once all their pieces are back and healthy. They are the #1 team in the East and #2 in the league. They have earned their respect and the national media doesn't give it to them.

Everyone's favorite athletic measuring competition is back. The NFL Combine started this afternoon and you can't get enough of it. Yeah, the 2021 Combine was cancelled and you all have been chomping at the bit for this year's Combine to kick off.

So where do we find ourselves? Apparently talking about hand sizes. Potential first round pick Kenny Picket's hands measured in at 8.5", which is half an inch below the red flag line of 9". You know who else has small hands? Joe Burrow (9") and Pat Mahomes (9.25"). I'd say they have done alright for themselves.

What else is going on in the world of football?

Adam Schefter has some inside scoop (Sure he does)

Impending NFL Free agency puts teams in a dilemma about which players to tag and how it will affect their cap space.

I talk about some rumors about a certain GOAT QB coming out of retirement. Is it true?

The NBA and the NFL had a lot going on. That's right, the NFL, even in the off season, is always an intriguing watch. Combine. Draft. Trades. Rumors. I covered it all.

Kevin Durant dropped 31 points on the Miami HEAT and it still wasn't enough to win the game. It is impressive how dominant he looked. Hasn't been on the court since January 15th and came back looking like a world beater. The HEAT looked even more impressive pulling this one out while Lowry, Jimmy Butler and P.J. Tucker were absent due to injury.

Even better news for the HEAT, Victor Oladipo returns on Monday March 7th and makes his debut against his former team the Houston Rockets. Oladipo is definitely a much-needed piece on the defensive end. It'll surely take him some time to get up and running on the offensive side.

NFL News

The NFL Combine still going on. Coverage of Day 2 starts today at 4.

WRs are making headlines. 9 WRs ran sub 4.4s 40s. That officially makes this the fastest group of receivers to come through any draft.

Rumors

There are trade rumors about teams looking to trade for Veteran QBs as opposed to drafting their next starter. They say it's because of the lack of star QBs in this year's class. While that could be true, I think it's more posturing by GMs in order to better position themselves for the draft.

Other Rumors

Browns looking to pair Garrett Wilson with Baker Mayfield. Doubtful. Wilson is really small for a receiver and for a football player in general.

Kayvon Thibodeaux has no drive? More smokescreens by GMs hoping other teams buy this and leave an opening for them to scoop him up. He's a top 5 pick.

Titans GM Jon Robinson says he's not looking for Tannehill's replacement. Instead, he's looking for someone who will come and sit behind him, learn, grow, and eventually take over.

MLB and the players could not come to an agreement.

What does that mean for the fans? The players? The owners?

Is it just as simple as millionaires vs. billionaires?

I give you a former baseball fan's perspective on the situation and why it is bigger than just rich players vs. rich owners.
