Jon Goltz

Hello and Welcome to the Goltz Sports Productions Podcast, a Podcast highlighting the stories of D2 and D3 student-athletes, alumni, coaches, and administrators.

As a 2019 BSE graduate of D3 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and 2020 MBA graduate of D2 University of Wisconsin-Parkside, I have had the chance to see strong competition and fantastic stories at these levels, competition and stories that may go unnoticed due to the media hype from D1.

It my honor to be someone who brings some of these stories to light. Just because you didn't go D1 doesn't mean you don't have a story to tell... Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jon-goltz8/support

Today's guest is Rachel Lewellen, a member of the UW-Whitewater Warhawk Gymnastics team from 2018-22. Her primary event was the vault. Under Coach Jennifer Regan, Warhawk Gymnastics has won 5 NCGA Championships: 2012-14 and 2017-18, making it second to football in national championships. During Rachel's time with Warhawk Gymnastics, the team qualified for the NCGA National Meet three times (including cancellation of the 2020 meet and truncated 2021 season, without a national meet) and placed 3rd in 2018-19, despite a rough regular season and using a burst in the final rotation to qualify for the meet.

Zay Watts is a member of the Division II University of Minnesota-Duluth Men's Basketball team, which, going into the NSIC Tournament in February 2022, is coming off its best season in three decades, going 23-4, clocking in at #13 in the NABC Rankings, and didn't lose a regular-season home contest.

Zay also has his own shoe cleaning business, Bless Your Soles, which started with a can of shoe cleaner that almost went unused...

Even though he may not see a lot of action on the court, Zay shows that it's important to take each opportunity as it comes and run with it as best as you can.

This episode is a little different...

Today's guest is Ed Wegner, father of Justin Wegner, a former UW-Whitewater Warhawk Baseball athlete. Following his true freshman season in 2016, which saw him earn playing time at catcher and earn a trip to the D3 College World Series, Justin was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, a battle that lasted for three years until his passing on July 10, 2019.

After his passing, Justin's parents Ed and Cathy founded the JWegStrong Foundation, dedicated to raising awareness of the cancer that took Justin, as it is so rare (100 cases a year) that it doesn't receive much funding.

Today's guest is Sara Klimisch, a goalie for the UW-Whitewater Women's Soccer team from 2016-19, and even served as a volunteer assistant in 2021. She is currently finishing her Master's degree in Speech and Language Pathology, which she will complete in May 2022.

At UW-Whitewater, women's soccer is one of the most underrated teams on campus. During the 2010s under Head Coach Ryan Quamme, the team won 156 games, went 77-14-5 in WIAC play, went to the NCAA Tournament 8 times, appeared in the Sweet 16 twice, and once in the Elite 8. In 2019, after missing the NCAA Tournament the previous season for the first time under Quamme, the Warhawks rallied to win the conference once again.

Sara and I also discuss the importance of mental health, which has become more and more important to her over the course of her career.

Max Ludwig, at the time of this recording, just wrapped up his men's soccer career with the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers men's soccer team. Playing from 2017-21 (Conference only spring season for 2020-21), Ludwig was an integral part of the Rangers 2019 and 2021 GLIAC Championship/NCAA Tournament teams.

Since taking over as athletic director in 2017-18, Andrew Gavin took the UW-Parkside Ranger Athletics, the only Division II program in Wisconsin, and a program who had been kicked out of their conference and banned from postseason play for a year, and got them a fresh image, a spot in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), arguably the toughest conference in D2, and spearheaded a campaign to renovate the indoor facilites.
