Jaryd Bernstein from RPM FLG joins the Out of State Hunter Podcast for a fast-paced “Stories From the Season” recap covering an Arizona archery elk and Kaibab mule deer hunt. Muzzleloader Mayhem In The Elk Woods - George Bermudez

Idaho’s New Non-Resident Tag Draw Explained – Tara Reichert, IDFG License Operations Manager
In this episode, we break down Idaho’s major overhaul of its non-resident hunting tag system. Chad has special guest, Tara Reichert, Idaho Department of Fish and Game, License Operations Manager on to discuss the new system and how it impacts non-residents. For 2025, Idaho has moved away from the chaotic first-come, first-served OTC scramble and shifted to a randomized draw designed to level the playing field for everyone.
We walk through how the new system works: a 10-day application window in December, the ability to list up to five hunt choices per species, and the option to apply as a group. There’s no application fee, but hunters do have to buy a license up front — a change that’s already sparked a lot of conversation.
Tag results will be released in January, and successful applicants must pick up their tags by the deadline before any leftovers go into a second drawing. Idaho plans to use the data from this new process to better understand demand and guide future wildlife management decisions.

Bo was able to gift the tag to his son Austin and that is how this story begins.
Virginia reintroduced elk several years ago and the heard has matured to the size that can allow a few tags each year. Bo and Austin were lucky to get their hands on one of the first ever Virginia elk tags and they took the western elk hunting game to the Virginia mountains to find a giant bull elk.
It was an amazing journey for Austin and Bo. It started with a once in a lifetime big horn sheep tag in Oregon and include a mule deer, barbary sheep and finally a record book elk in Virginia in only seven days. This is a story you do not want to miss. Austin and Bo tell the story as if it were yesterday even though it was a couple of years ago.

Colorado is making some major changes to their big game draw system in 2028. I have Henry Ferguson on the show to discuss the changes and how they impact out of state hunters as well as residents. Colorado has always been a state you could fall back on since the draw was later in the draw season and they had an over the counter opportunity. That is all going to change in 2028, OTC will no longer be a thing and the draw system in going to completely different.

This week Chad talks with Justin Garay about the inner workings of a NRL Hunter match. Justin is the match director for the Hunters Coalition Match in Clovis, NM. This week I walk through my 2022 Application Strategy and how I use the tools from goHUNT Insider to hopefully draw more tags. I talk in depth about the use of the State Regulation page on Insider and how the Important dates are crucial in my planning process.
On this past episode I had Jamie Carlson on the show to talk about Hunting and most importantly, eating. Jamie is a cook and food writer who recently wrote a book titled Modern Carnivore. I had him on the show way before the book but you will see he is a great cook and hunter. Jamie talks about hunting the Boundry Waters of Minnesota and chasing antelope out in Wyoming. This show was a lot of fun.
