Beats, Brews, and Buddies is a local Southwestern Virginia podcast aiming to discuss the livelihood of its local musicians. Mentor Jeremy Price and mentee Travis Schmitt host this podcast and are excited for you to hear what they have to offer.
Colby Rorer is a Roanoke native, father, husband, and music enthusiast. Began playing various instruments in middle school and high school. Eventually starting gigging at restaurants and in backyards — not even knowing you could charge for gigs like that. From there it’s been a very slow, organic growth toward becoming a regular act at local bars, breweries, and restaurant patios. Self taught, with the help of close friends, and practicing everyday. The heart of Colby’s music world is the Troublesome Blues Band: a steady group of musicians who have fun wherever they’re welcome.
Aaron is 16 and has played the guitar for about 5 years. He loves all aspects of music but classic rock and blues are his favorite. He takes guitar lessons with Kenny Seay and Brian Mesko. He is in the Patrick Henry High School Marching band, Jazz band, and indoor percussion. He is the lead guitarist with Blu3print (which is a band that formed through students of Kenny Seay. He is presently the lead guitarist in the Asia Bronte Band.
Hailing from Bedford County, Virginia, Adam Markham has been performing for audiences for more than forty years. Though his vocals are usually accompanied by acoustic guitar and harmonica, he also can occasionally be seen playing electric guitar, bass, banjo, mandolin and ukulele. Influences range from Hank to Hendrix, with heavy doses of blues, jazz and classic rock, and his eclectic repertoire also includes many original compositions. He currently performs solo, and is a member of the band The Big Whoop, and the duo Heartbent, and also plays with numerous other musicians in the area. Past bands include The Housecats and Cows in Trouble, as well as a 6 1/2 year stint with the popular Americana band Bebop Hoedown.

Cory has been testing the limits of his vocals with each song he sings since the band was created in August 2015. With a booming voice, mixed with a soul grabbing projection, and a dash of expression with emotion, Cory is sure to grab your attention with any song on their playlist.
Cory says that his passion for music is fueled by the energy and emotion the music brings to life. From the personal connection to the songs and to the energy of the crowd that each song brings, this is what keeps his love for music alive.
Cory says his favorite part about performing is the feeling he has when he's on stage. It's a stress relief, an adrenaline rush, and it really feels like it's the only place he fits in sometimes.
Meet Brian Jones, Bassist for LouD. Brian is considered to be the showman of the group. He loves engaging with crowd and showing his skills and talent to anyone and everyone that likes a good show.
Brian has been with LouD since February 2022. He says that his love for playing the bass and the God given gift to do so, it what fuels his passion for music. Being able to jam with like-minded musicians that have the same passion and drive as he does is very important in that passion and drive for him. Brian has been playing the bass since 1998, but actually started playing in church around 1979. It's just a part of his DNA. Being a cancer survivor and having a second chance at life fuels his passion that much more for music and entertainment. He's thankful for every day. Brian says the best part of performing, for him, is being able to make people get up and move. For him, it feels like they are a part of the show which he enjoys; the dancing, watching the crowd sing along, everything. It's just an amazing feeling when the crowd gets pumped up and ready to rock with them. "It's the energy they give us, it's like no other".
I am Dionte “Taye the Truth” Hall, a lyricist native to Roanoke, Virginia. I released my debut project, Broken King, in 2021. That was the catalyst for multiple collaborative projects, including the “We Are Art” project cypher, as well as several placements on different music albums. My music is uplifting, relatable and accessible to a variety of audiences, which allowed me to build a well established brand in the Roanoke locality. As I continue to create art and perform at various events. I want to continue to use my music as an inspiration for my community to both believe in and express themselves.

The Kind, a Blacksburg based folk-rock band, is familiar to anyone who has passed through the New River Valley in the last thirty plus years. Formed in 1986, The Kind plays in a variety of styles that ranges from classic rock, R&B, and jazz to bluegrass and country; however, the arena which they most frequently blend their diverse influences is their huge melting pot of Grateful Dead covers. Over the years, The Kind has been privileged to perform with the likes of Jorma Kaukonen (Jefferson Airplane & Hot Tuna), Rick Danko (The Band), Merle Saunders (The Jerry Garcia Band), The New Riders of the Purple Sage, and Jefferson Airplane. The Kind combines strong lead vocals and harmonies together with intertwining melodies and soulful rhythmic grooves to produce a fun, flowing and danceable experience. They are equally at home in a laid-back acoustic setting or a high-energy electric experience.
Karlee Raye is a 21 year old singer/songwriter from the heart of Central Virginia. With her soulful voice, demanding stage presence, and infectious personality, Karlee Raye is sure to win over your heart and the rhythm it beats to!
David Brown was born in Roanoke in 1967. His early exposure to live music came courtesy of his parents, who took him to see Ike and Tina Turner, the Eagles, and other iconic acts in the early 1970s. With a mother who played piano exceptionally well and parents who enjoyed popular music, David's childhood was filled with the sounds of Janis Joplin, The Doobie Brothers, Neil Diamond, Ann Murray, and a variety of tunes from FM radio.
His fascination with drums began at the age of 10, and in 1980, David met Kelly Scott, Jody Ensor, and John Ayers, who became pivotal figures in his drumming journey. Encouraged by his mother, David delved into drumming, idolizing Neil Peart and Rush while also participating in his high school band.
David's musical journey took a significant turn when he enrolled at Belmont College in Nashville, Tennessee, in the late 1980s. There, he immersed himself in music theory, private lessons, and the vibrant live music scene, enriching his musical palette.
Since the mid-1980s, David has been deeply involved with various local bands, including Hoppie Vaughan, Phil Norman, Cory Brammer, Foundation Stone, and Kerosene Willy, among others. However, his true passion lies in collaborating with fellow musicians who craft original songs, making it his favorite aspect of musical involvement.
CHRIS KEATON is a 30 year Voting Member of the Recording Academy based in Nashville. He is an award winning music publisher, management consultant and a member of the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame (Band of Oz, 2016). He manages rock act Emblem 3. His song plugging for his clients has resulted in songs being recorded by George Strait, Trisha Yearwood, Brook and Dunn, Lonestar, Reba ,Cliff Richard and others.He is also an author (DAPPER, Confidence On The Fly), speaker and a member of the Macy's Celebrations Team for the retail giant.
Born Justin Brownlee Tolley in Central VA April 6, 1974, Justin took in a variety of early music influences from an early age including classic rock, R&B, funk and classic country and Americana genres to eventually learn piano, trombone & bass guitar and navigate his unique path and career in music.
He has arranged & written in Virginia original bands including RedLightGo 97-99 (Lexington), Mafia Track Suit 09-12 (Roanoke), while hustling the cover band circuit for 13 years with the Worx. When not booked with the Worx, always eager to meet players and play with Roanoke valley bands. With the Worx, he opened for bands including: Keith Urban, Tracy Lawrence, Trace Adkins, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, to name a few. Always a proponent of moving the Roanoke scene forward, he spent the early 2000s at downtown haunts like Green Dolphin’s open mic, Martin’s, Blue5, 202, Awfuls - always up to hang and support members of the Roanoke music scene.
His move to Nashville in early 2015 continued an ever-changing career path, connecting with Jon Wysocki former drummer of Staind to make music together. Lower Broadway & midtown became the grind and networking hub amidst one of the richest musician pools on the planet. Writing, recording and touring with Jon behind Natalie Brady Band (see FB and YouTube), then following the restart of the Covid lockdown, bassist of original rock act River Ghost. (found on all streaming platforms) During his 7+ years in Nashville, he primarily toured the midwest from the Gulf up to Minneapolis, Kansas City to Key West from 2015-2019 with multiple bands. One of his favorite tours as bass player for upcoming artist Kasey Tyndall, opening for Whiskey Myers & Jamey Johnson - both huge musical influences.
Moving on from the Natalie Brady Band post Covid shutdown, he headed back to Nashville and through a shared reference met up with River Ghost, all original bluesy/ swampy-rock band akin to Crowes/ Allman/ Sabbath .. The remaining two years in Nashville was spent writing, showcasing and recording River Ghost material, while juggling steady shifts with “Loud & Co”, bending the rules with tired setlist at a time in and around Nashville, mostly in the Lower Broadway scene. Upon meeting Belgium native Kathleen Ongena in Nashville, they formed 369 Music, a Rock cover band putting hand-selected players together to gig around Nashville.
Eventually the need to relocate to Virginia came to bear since losing his father to a stroke in 2019. The decision was made in fall 2022 to return home to take care of the home place in Natural Bridge Station. Justin and Kat set up 369 Music gigs in Virginia, enlisting players in the area to round out the lineup. Follow on FB at 369 Music.
Now residing in Natural Bridge Station, Justin still pursues music when the gigs present themselves, as well as aviation - working toward his pilot license. And like the Nashville scene, willing to jump in when bands are in need of bass in the area. ‘369 Music’, is currently putting together a press kit to promote bookings, also dates on his books playing for local Kid Rock tribute act “Cowboy”.
Dylan Dent is a singer/songwriter, rapper, and producer. Throughout his 7 projects (with an 8th and 9th on the way) his music has crossed many genres. But he spends most of his time trying to find new angles on rap and pop music. The one thing that remains consistent is the strong theme of introspection in his songwriting. With everything he creates he hopes to add value to the lives of those experiencing his art.
I was born and raised in the Roanoke Valley. Mom is a classical pianist and was the music director at church and dad sang and played guitar so music was a big part of life from a young age. Started playing trumpet and guitar in middle school but the drum kit was always intriguing to me. When our church switched from hymns to “praise music” we needed a drummer. My parents bought me a drum kit and signed me up for lessons with Jeremy at the fret mill. I was hooked right away!
I studied music at college and since then have made at least a partial living through music at almost every point in my life. Around 2010-2011 I started gigging as a side man on the music scene in Roanoke and have been blessed to play with over a dozen local groups including the Ministers of Soul, Welcome to Hoonah, The Jesse Ray Carter Trio, Cory Campbell, the Big Lick Brass Band, Tom Artwick Trio, $5 Shake, Place Called Home, and more.
I moved my family to Pittsburgh in 2020 where I now work as the Creative Video Manager at a church in the South Hills. My time as a musician in the Roanoke Valley was an incredibly impactful part of my life and I use the lessons I learned as a player on the Roanoke music scene nearly every day. It’s a major blessing in my life to have been a part of this incredible scene!
Isaac Hadden is a young, genre-smashing guitarist and vocalist from Southwest, VA, currently based in Asheville, NC. He is gaining attention for his passion and talent, and building a supportive fanbase in the United States and abroad. He has played alongside some of the hottest acts on the music festival circuit and performed supporting sets for a growing list of legendary guitarists. He fronts the Isaac Hadden Project, an improvisational jazz-infused funk-rock group comprised of seasoned professionals from Southwest, VA as well as Isaac Hadden Organ trio, an unconventional jazz-funk group that features powerhouse musicians from western NC. He also performs regular solo acoustic shows, making use of live looping and a unique approach to the acoustic guitar. With over a decade of musical experience, his fresh, high-energy performances routinely leave audiences clamoring for more.
“Momma said, I was singing before I was talking.” Terry Brown is a singer who comes to Roanoke Valley from Wilmington. DE. He came to Roanoke to pastor a small in 1986. Terry studied voice at Delaware State University and musical theater from the University of Delaware respectively. Although Terry studied classical voice in college, he grew up singing mainly R&B, Jazz, Show Tunes and Choral music. Terry has had the privilege to perform with some of the finest musicians in Delaware and the Roanoke Valley area. He is the former, male lead singer for the Sway Katz Big Band, and is the current lead singer for The Kings Band. Terry is also the co-founder and lead singer of the now defunct band “The Fire,” as well as The Terry Brown Ascension Project. The brand of music is an eclectic mix of Jazz, Blues, R&B, & Classic Rock with variation – a fusion blend.
Cory Schmitt earned his Bachelor of Music Education degree in 2012 from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA. While at JMU, Cory played trumpet and cornet in numerous ensembles, and was also the Drum Major for the 450-member Marching Royal Dukes. In 2014, Cory earned his Masters Degree in Wind Band Conducting and Trumpet Performance at the University of Northern Iowa, where he conducted the UNI Pep Band and UNI Concert Band, and played lead trumpet in the award winning UNI Jazz Band One. In 2014, Cory began an 8-year career as the Director of Bands at Forest City, Iowa as High School and Middle School Band Director. Under Cory’s direction, the FCHS Concert and Marching Band grew from 58 to 120 members. His ensembles earned numerous superior ratings and first place finishes at state-level events, as well In 2017, Cory joined the music staff at Waldorf University, where he assumed the role of Director of Wind Symphony as well as Adjunct Professor of Music. In his current position as a DMA Wind Conducting student and Teaching Assistant for the University of Iowa bands, Cory serves as the conductor of University Band and assists with the Hawkeye Marching Band and Iowa Pep Band. He is also in his second year as the Director of the Iowa City New Horizons Band, a group of retirees over the age of 55.
Andy & Abbey Neikirk are Roanoke natives and newlyweds. They met at Journey church when Andy joined the church’s band. While Abbey has primarily played music at church, Andy has been in bands like AM Avenue, Rutledge, Long Story Short and was a founding member of the Jerry Wimmer Trio. Andy plays guitar, bass, and is a vocalist. In part with playing music, Andy has gotten into live and studio audio engineering, in part mixing the songs for the online church service. Abbey sings and plays a bit of piano. They have recently started a band together called The Blend and are excited to play more music together.
Corey Hunley is a natural-born entertainer, just a guy passing through life with a guitar in his hand and a song in his head. He has been fortunate enough to share the stage with renowned musicians like Marty Stuart, Darrell Scott, Will Hoge, John Hiatt, Paul Thorn, Colbie Caillat, Uncle Kracker, and a few other cool folks. As a singer-songwriter, Corey possesses the ability to captivate his audience. He's not only a good singer but also a helluva songwriter and an all-around fine guitarist. Corey's music has a way of making you want to drink harder, love stronger, and live longer.
Sandra Aranegui launched Lover’s Rock Productions and Smith Mountain Lake Live Music (a DBA of Lover’s Rock Productions, a not-for-profit booking and promoting business) in September 2021, focusing on community events and festivals involving live music. She books musical talent for a total of 18 different restaurants, bars and breweries, and offers a weekly listing of live music and community events for the area. She launched the first annual Smith Mountain Lake Live Music Festival with Center in the Square as a beneficiary, a huge success with a combined 32 bands, eight total stages and five additional satellite venues. She works closely with Franklin County, the Town of Rocky Mount, CruisIn Rocky Mount and local business owners to coordinate music events for everyone. She is currently working on forming her own 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization called “Live Music Lives On,” focusing on fostering the love for live music in children to promote and inspire our youth to follow their dreams of performing live music, bringing together current performing musicians and children and more. “[Music] has the ability to bring joy to someone who has had a hard week. It has the ability to form bonds in friendships and love. It’s really a remarkable thing to witness,” she says.
JD Sutphin is a father, husband, musician and business owner from southwest Virginia. Born in Botetourt County he finished out school in Franklin County where after graduation became an on air personality at WROV-FM in Roanoke as well as XL102 in Richmond while fronting the hard rock metal band, Madrone.
For over ten years, Madrone toured throughout the East coast eventually gained nationwide support with their top 50 Billboard single “Daybreak” as well as charting with the follow up single “House of Ghosts".
In 2014 JD left WROV and radio to create Big Lick Entertainment, an events and marketing company. The company created Big Lick Comic Con in 2017, the most attended comic convention in Virginia.
JD put a pause on Madrone in 2015 creating the band The Low Low Chariot in the country and alt-rock world, who continues to perform and create to this day.
JD is also co-owner of Big Lick Comics in Roanoke with his brother Adam.
JoJo Stockton is a Franklin County native who has opened for several Grammy-nominated artists such as Corey “Lil Pop” Ledet, “TAZ” Brandon Niederauer and Delbert McClinton. A true music enthusiast, JoJo enjoys all genres but holds the Blues near and dear to his heart! Thanks to his father’s early exposure to the blues guitar, JoJo has written, recorded and performed his originals all throughout the region with tremendous success.
Currently a Roanoke resident, you can find JoJo always downtown playing for the local scene w/ his award winning band Solacoustix.
Stockton still finds time to make it to the NRBS jams from time to time which he loves. Nicknamed Roanoke's "Mayor of Music", his bodies of work include 2 albums: “ Cookies & Ice Cream” and “Dreaming”, both available on all digital media.
Hi, I’m Tad, born-and-bred in east Tennessee, and a Roanoker for almost 25 years. I’m 58 and I’ve been beating on things for about 50 of those years. I’ve been writing for about the same amount of time. I don’t do either one of them great, but I enjoy them both. I’ve played in country bands, rock bands, blues bands. Lately, I’m a member of alt-rock original songs group Monster Atlantic, and honky-tonk act Rachael Hester & The Tennessee Walkers. If I’m lucky, I’ve got another 20 years of doing what I love at a decent level.
Brooke Tolley is a native of Roanoke, Virginia and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Vocal Performance from Liberty University and a Master of Arts in Voice from Radford University. Brooke’s opera roles include Kate Pinkterton in Madama Butterfly, Johanna in Sweeney Todd, the Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute, Laetitia in The Old Maid and the Thief and Lucy in Menotti’s The Telephone. As a concert soloist, Brooke has performed in Handel’s Messiah, DuBois’ Seven Last Words of Christ, Schubert’s Mass in G, and Pepper Choplin’s A Journey with the Shepherd, which she premiered at Lincoln Center in 2017.
As an experienced voice teacher, she has maintained a private voice studio for students across the Roanoke Valley since 2012 and has taught lessons at Opera Roanoke, the Jefferson Center’s Music Lab and Hollins University.
She was a participant in Leadership Roanoke Valley’s Class of 2019 and was chosen as one of only three opera administrators across the country to attend The Hart Institute for Women Opera Conductors and Administrators at The Dallas Opera in 2018. Brooke was appointed General Director of Opera Roanoke in 2019 and was chosen by The Roanoker magazine as one of Roanoke’s “40 Under 40” in 2021. She is passionate about connecting audiences of all ages with opera in both traditional and non-traditional venues and believes that opera should be accessible to all.
Cameron Hughes is a local Roanoke musician, producer, an engineer. He grew up in Rocky Mount, VA and attended Franklin County High. After high school, he studied Music Tech at Belmont University. His gift of playing piano started when he was around the age of 12 years old. By the age of 16 he started traveling professionally playing Smooth Jazz and R&8. Since then he has worked with multiple Gospel and R&B artists. His production company “Hughes Music Entertainment” was created to give local artists a feel of what the big stage feels like so they can be prepared when the time comes.
Festival in the Park is a community event offering live music and a diversity of local vendors that has operated annually since its founding in 1968. As a qualifying 501C3 organization run by an all volunteer board of directors, Festival in the Park owes its annual success to the generosity of local
volunteers and the undying support of the community.
Asia Sawyer, lead singer for the Asia Bronte Band, is an up-and-coming vocalist born and raised in the Roanoke Valley. She’s loved music as long as she can remember, but in the last few years she’s taken her passion to the next level with the help of her band mate Lewis Stump. Her biggest musical inspiration is Miranda Lambert, but her style isn’t confined to any one genre. You can find the Asia Brontë Band rocking the doors off of local bars like the Hangout, where their energetic vibe can take any event to the next level.
Country-rocker Adam Rutledge is soaring to new heights with the release of his EP, Runway, which stands out with its “distinctive hybrid of country and rock, catchy guitar intros and lyrical depth” (Sports & Entertainment Nashville/Bob Paxman).
The Roanoke, Va. native’s first-class songwriting, referred to as “storytelling that features clever turns of phrase (Taste of Country/Sterling Whitaker), caught the attention of country music hitmaker Phil Vassar through a connection with longtime Vassar collaborator, Jeff Smith. This resulted in Vassar taking the fellow Virginian under his wing as a management client and opening act. “When I heard Phil Vassar was managing newcomer Adam Rutledge, I immediately had high expectations and when I heard him, he exceeded them. His songs are slices of life everyone can relate to brought to life with his warm, evocative voice and searing guitar. As a fellow Virginia native, I've got to say this guy is going to make the home folks proud!” said Billboard and Sounds Like Nashville contributor Deborah Evans Price.
Adam is known for putting on high-energy live shows, so it’s no surprise when he draws large crowds on the road. He has shared the stage with artists such as Chris Janson, Old Dominion, Lee Brice, Brothers Osborne, Drake White, Russell Dickerson, Lauren Alaina, Chase Rice, Phil Vassar, Tyler Farr and many more.
His edgy, powerful sound doesn’t blend in but does indeed fit in today’s country sound. Adam’s most recent music video for his single “Love Kickin’ In” recently premiered on CMT.com and reached the #1 spot for most viewed video.
Now 26, Christian was raised in the small town of Huddleston, Va and grew up spending his time around Smith Mountain Lake. Growing up, his life wasn’t always easy. With an alcoholic father, and an enabling mother of that drinking problem it was tough, but music found him at a young age. Picking up the guitar at the age of 11, then later getting professional vocal coaching from while participating in Staunton River High School Choir.
After high school, though, Christian began down a slippery slope of alcohol addiction himself, losing his passions for music. He would find himself homeless, jumping job to job trying to figure out where he fit in. Until he met his now wife and her family. The musical talents of this family pulled him back into his music, and now, being almost 4 years sober, Christian has created for himself a full-blown music career. After playing his first solo show in March 2021, Christian hit the ground running playing any bar, restaurant, or venue he could. After landing an American Idol Callback Audition in early 2022, his career truly took off. He quickly formed his band, “Christian Q. & The Groove with meme era, Amy Quesenberry (bass), David Owens (lead guitar) and John Graham (drums). Now playing 3-5 shows a week, along with recording his debut album, “Coastlines to Mountaintops”. His goal is to start traveling more and spread his wings to new venues across state boarders!
Now a husband, & father to a beautiful two-year-old boy who loves music just as much as his daddy does, Christian just wants to create the best life possible for his wife and son by doing what he loves most; and that’s playing music.
Tyler Godsey, who is deaf, in 2017 founded 5 Points Music Sanctuary, a 501.c3 non-profit, in an old former church at the corner of Maple and Jefferson, under the mantra of sound and vibrations being ‘the core of all I've found that's good in people.’ …in October, he launched the "Chasing the Light" initiative, to bring awareness and support to Usher Syndrome, an untreatable genetic disorder that includes deafness and leads to blindness. Both of Godsey's children have been diagnosed with Usher 1B. The goal of the Chasing the Light program is to give two families the opportunity to see the Northern Lights in early 2020. Tyler Godsey's building of a professional life around the untreatable medical diagnosis of his two children is both heroic and heartwarming, and sets an example for all parents.
Carolan spent her twenties touring up and down the east coast and sharing the stage with artists like Martina McBride, Aaron Tippin and many others. She currently writes and performs original music for her management deal and sits in with pop and rock bands to help pay the bills. It was after her daughter was born when she decided to finally follow her heart. She wrote her first album. Since then, she has been creating original indie pop and rock music to be used in sync licensing and performing on the east coast as part of Shanolan. She has had her songs placed in shows like Riverdale, Teen Mom, and an upcoming feature film on HBO Max.
Born and raised in Martinsville, VA, Andy has been playing music for most of his life. His obsession began at a very young age while watching Elvis movies with his mom. After seeing “the King” do his thing on TV, Andy decided that he wanted to do THAT!
He began to dabble with guitar and drums when his cousin started taking lessons at a local music store. Andy would go over to her house and beg her to show him what she had learned at her lessons. After learning a few things, he begged his parents for an electric guitar of his own so he could begin pursuing his rockstar dreams. His father came home one day with an old Washburn acoustic guitar, and told Andy if he learned to play that, he would buy him an electric guitar. So that’s exactly what he did!
Andy was a “self taught” musician until joining band in 6th grade. That decision would change his life forever. He started playing the trumpet, but ultimately ended up pulling double duty between percussion and baritone throughout the remainder of his school career. He was an active member of all ensembles offered, (marching band, jazz band, concert band, indoor drumline, and even winter guard) with a heavy focus on the marching side of things. To this day, Andy is still heavily involved in the marching arts, serving as Percussion Director at Bassett High School in Bassett, VA; and Drumline Director at High Point University in High Point, NC. He has served as a consultant, arranger, and clinician for numerous schools and programs in Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.
Shortly after high school, Andy met Roanoke musician, Jeremy Price, and joined Jeremy’s group “Plastic Musik” in 2003. In 2006, the group landed a 9 week residency at Busch Gardens in Tampa, FL. In 2008, the group relocated to Las Vegas and became the number one booked act on the college circuit in 2009, toured the country extensively, performed numerous NBA halftime shows, toured Mexico, performed at the 2008 European All- Star Game in Paris, and made several appearances on local and national TV.
While living in Las Vegas with the “Plastic Musik” crew, Andy began cutting his Rock n’ Roll teeth in a band called “One Loud Secret.” The band was a power-pop quartet consisting of Jeremy Price on guitar, Leilani Dibble on vocals, Dave Mcgraw on drums, and Andy playing bass. The band enjoyed some success on the Vegas circuit, but more importantly taught Andy how to be a member of a hard working, constantly evolving, rock band.
After moving back to Martinsville in 2011, Andy began looking for ways to make money that still allowed him to do what he loves. He began playing solo acoustic shows at local bars, which eventually led to the formation of the Andy Burnette Trio. Today the trio is a staple in the local music scene, consistently performing over 125 shows a year. Andy continues to do solo shows, and occasionally can be scene with his duo partner, Jake Earles, as the “Andy & Jake Show.”
Andy currently resides in Fieldale, VA with his fiancé, Ashley Perkins, his 9 year old daughter Amelia, and his dog Jackson.
Brian Mesko was born into a family of musicians, and raised in Little Rock, AR, Mesko began piano lessons at age 8, moving to guitar at age 10. By 12 he was playing drums, and he picked up the bass at age 14.
As a teen Brian was gigging professionally, and even played drums on a short tour in Turkey at age 18. While still in high school he studied Jazz Theory & Ensemble at UALR under Michael Carenbauer (who studied under Pat Metheny at Berklee). Taking these credits on to MTSU, Brian completed a bachelor’s degree in Recording Industry. Mesko lived in the Nashville area from 1997 – 2005 and played with such international jazz greats as Les McCann, Tony Monaco, Dr. Lonnie Smith, John Jorgensen and Jeff Coffin.
After moving to central Virginia in 2005, Brian has been privileged to work with such jazz artists as Robert Jospe, Butch Taylor, Dane Alderson, John D’earth, Bobby Read, Charles Owens, Jonah Kane-West, Liz Barnes, any many more.
Brian formed The Rootdowns organ trio with members of Butcher Brown, DJ Williams Projekt, The Big Payback, and Skydog, and they released their debut album, "Songs With Friends" in 2013. In 2015 he started The Danktet, an instrumental trio whose collective influences create a unique blend of jazz, funk, rock, pop, reggae, blues, and R&B. With Australian native Dane Alderson of the Yellow Jackets on bass, and multi-instrumentalist and visual artist Forrest Young on drums, they released their first album, "One Thing Right" in 2016.
Aside from his own original projects, Brian has since joined several local projects, playing guitar and/or bass with the Robert Jospe Express, Lenny Marcus, Terry Brown Ascension Project, The Ambassador, Mojo Parker, Melissa and the Growlers, The Meskos Electric Revue, Jstop Latin Soul and Andrew Winn.
Brian currently resides with his wife and son in Roanoke, VA working as a session player, performer, and guitar professor/ensemble director at the University of Lynchburg.
Tim Martin started his solo career at the ripe age of 16 playing every Friday and Saturday evening at a restaurant called the Olde Tinker Mill Inn. It was a formal dining area upstairs with a pizza and beer meeting place downstairs. He would play for the diners upstairs during dinner then move downstairs for the later, livelier crowd. Building a song list of artists such as James Taylor, Dan Fogelberg, CSN&Y, Eagles, and originals he developed his style. Getting paid 15 dollars a night and free pizza seemed like a good deal to the teenaged Tim. What this job did was help him learn how to be comfortable and entertaining on stage and find what kind of tunes worked with different audiences.
42 years later he is still going strong as ever. Tim has played and still works in clubs, resorts, festivals, concerts, and private functions across southwest Virginia such as The Hotel Roanoke, Wintergreen Resort, Primeland Resort, Snowshow, Greenbrier, Homestead and more. He plays local Roanoke clubs such as The Quarter, Awful Arthurs, Annie Moore’s Tavern, Brambleton Deli and more. He has shared the stage and opened for artist such as Savoy Brown, Vern Gosdin, Jonathan Edwards, Ted Nugent, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Little River Band, Southern Culture on The Skids and more. He has released two albums over the years. Real Life Dreamers in 1992 with his duo partner Mark Wilbourn and Wishes in 2000, both all original songs written by Tim.
Joshua was born in raised in the Roanoke Valley. He was surrounded by music at a very early age, as his father played guitar and sang and so did several uncles and cousins. During his senior year, Joshua was awarded the Louis Armstrong Jazz Performance Award, for guitar performance. It was during his 8th grade year of school that he became very serious about playing guitar and decided to start a band. This band, Gypsy Joe, quickly became a popular act in the booming Roanoke County music scene of the time, and won 3 consecutive, Roanoke County Battle of the Bands competitions. The band went on to record 2 albums and enjoy some regional success.
In 2002, Gypsy Joe disbanded and Joshua joined local hard rock band, Frotter, and in 2005, Joshua was awarded “Best Lead Guitarist” at the New York International Music Festival (A music festival featuring over 300 bands from around the world), while performing with Frotter. In March of 2016, Joshua found himself with an opportunity to perform again:, this time joining The Low Low Chariot as the new lead guitarist. Joshua Has been performing with this group ever since. The group has recorded one album, Believer, in Nashville, and is working on the material that will become the follow-up album.

Bryan “Harvest Blaque” Hancock is a hip-hop/slam poetry artist, writer, comedian, and host of the eight year poetry show Soul Sessions Roanoke. He is also a Hip-Hop history and music technology teacher for the Jefferson Center and has an artistic residency for Carillon Robert Keeley Healing Arts, where he use creative writing and hip-hop as a pedagogy to help in areas of grief and loss and adolescents in psychiatric care. He is a part of the legendary Big Lick Conspiracy improv comedy troupe, and an all around artist who is passionate about evolving and telling my story through music and poetry.
Brach Rauchle has lived in the New River Valley for the past decade performing in groups such as Urth, Chupacabras, Ripejive & Lazy Man Dub Band as well as in horn sections with many different groups. He is principally a guitarist, saxophone player & vocalist & likes to build strange things to hit with his feet & other appendages.
A native of Memphis, Tennessee, Brach spent most of his musical career in the Los Angeles area prior to his life in Virginia. While on the West coast for about 15 years he performed & recorded with many groups on both guitar and saxophone. His funk / progressive trio, Urth, performed their original music regularly at venues such as the Knitting Factory, the Coconut Teaser & the world-renown jazz/fusion nightclub the Baked Potato while also working as the rhythm section of a jazz quartet, performing at many weddings, casuals & various events where he wouldn't normally be allowed to loiter like the Johnathon Club in downtown LA. During his college years Brach began to develop his multi-instrumental approach which led to the formation of the band Urth in it's original trio format in which he played guitar & bass simultaneously on a self modified 7-string guitar while also incorporating his first instrument, the alto saxophone. By building an elevated stand out of some drum stand, guitar stand & sax stand parts, he was able to play the sax along with the 7-string. Some years later, he would ultimately build the world's craziest solo rig in the pursuit of true spontaneous improvisation of form. It was very very heavy... and big. Nowadays Brach is loving playing music with his beautiful brothers and sisters in Chupacabras, Lazy Man Dub Band & Ripejive as well as enjoying working with and getting to hear the music of so many other fantastic musicians in the NRV area, all while carrying as little gear as possible whenever he possibly can.
Jeff Midkiff is mandolin virtuoso based in Roanoke, VA. He’s also a clarinetist, and between reed and strings, he has performed with opera companies and symphony orchestras. And that is symphony orchestras, plural: Milwaukee, Knoxville, Shreveport, Champaign-Urbana, Jacksonville, Williamsburg, Northwest Florida, Southeast Texas, Ohio Northern, and Cal Poly Symphony Orchestras, the Rochester and Boulder Philharmonics, and the Yale Concert Band. And speaking of Yale, they gave him their Distinguished Music Educator award in 2017. It was for his work as a music educator and Orchestra Director for the Roanoke City Schools – Midkiff holds a bachelor’s degree in Music Education and a Masters in clarinet performance.
Matt Browning is a musician and singer-songwriter. He's been working to put words and stories to music for over 20 years. Matt's current band, The Floorboards, have released two albums of original music and are preparing to record the third.
Kenny Seay, life long musician and music teacher, established The Rock with Kenny Seay in 2021. Jesus Christ is the ROCK, the foundation and the one responsible for his gift of music. He uses his love of music to witness to others the gift Christ has given us all, if we only call on him. His mission is winning souls for Christ by explaining the unexplained and supernatural through a biblical reality and worldview. Jake is a Roanoke, VA based bass player, live sound engineer and recording geek. He currently plays in The Floorboards, The Dead Reckoning, Issac Hadden Project, The Darkside Experience, and various other pick up gigs and projects. You can find him behind the console at 5 Points Music Sanctuary and on various venue and festival stages in the southeast. In his spare time he likes to hang out with his kids, wander around in the woods, and cook.
Jody Ensor is a guitarist specializing in finger picking like James Taylor but enjoys playing all kinds of music from oldies to modern day pop. Along with being a solo act, he has been a member of The Fat Daddy Blues Band and The Key West Band.
Dan Keeley, a native of Roanoke, is a singer, songwriter, and composer and is one of Bob and Nina Keeley’s 15 children. He has been the music minister at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church in Roanoke for the past 28 years where he directs choirs, composes and arranges. Dan has performed all over the world in the international group ‘Up With People’ and has played in several bands in California and Virginia. He has also performed many times locally in the Roanoke valley at Festival in the Park and at numerous churches and civic functions. Dan has recorded two CDs which are entitled, “Internal Progression” and “Straight from the Book”. Dan’s compositions range in style from soft ballads to energetic contemporary Christian.
David Stewart Wiley is the Conductor of the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra and was the Conductor and Music Director of the Long Island Philharmonic from 2001 to 2016. He has been honored by Roanoke City Council as Roanoke’s “Citizen of the Year” for his outstanding service and outreach to diverse communities, separate from his professional duties. As a solo pianist, Wiley has performed with numerous major orchestras throughout the United States including Minnesota, Indianapolis, Oregon, Honolulu, Wheeling, and West Virginia, performing major concerti by Baroque to contemporary, often conducting from the piano. He has appeared as both a jazz and classical pianist in Boston’s Symphony Hall and in recital and chamber music appearances throughout the U.S. as well as in China, Russia, Romania, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Czech Republic, and Bulgaria. David Stewart Wiley won the Aspen Conducting Prize, was Assistant Conductor for the Aspen Music Festival, and was awarded a Conducting Fellowship at Tanglewood. He and his wife Leah Marer Wiley (soprano soloist, teacher, and owner of Muevela Fitness) have a son and a daughter who play cello and violin and enjoy travelling, hiking, biking, chess, and making music together.
AJ Garrett is the lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist, and songwriter for the sci-fi inspired rock outfit, The Bureau. As a lover of sci-fi movies and punk rock, AJ's work with The Bureau is inspired by flying saucers and vintage guitar licks.
Charissa Joy is a Roanoke based singer/songwriter playing throughout the area solo as well as with her band Charissa Joy & The High Frequency. Having moved to Ohio to study music in college and then journeying out West to Los Angeles, California for many years these experiences have shaped her sound and style. As she began to explore her own creative tendencies those were blended with her powerhouse vocals and rhythmic acoustic guitar playing with influences of folk, soul, pop, jazz and R&B.
Laura is a Roanoke/Salem native who has been on the music scene for almost 25 years. She is a recreational therapist with Carilion Clinic and has been working in the mental health field for over 4 years. While you'll likely find her behind a mic, Laura has a rich musical history-from recording studios, church choir, musical theater, jazz ensembles, classical training, and rock bands. She enjoys making music with friends and bringing joy to others through it. If she's not on stage, she's in the crowd dancing. Laura truly believes that music heals and bridges the gaps that divide us from one another.
Alex started music in 7th grade with a teacher named Ken Wilson, who was gracious enough to let Alex do chores to pay for lessons. He studied at University of Lynchburg for 2 years under Ed McKinis, Brian Mesko, Chris Sharpe, Chris McGee, and Johnson Scott. Alex then transferred to the Los Angeles College of Music, and took classes with Jerry Watts Jr., John Avila (of Oingo Boingo), Peter Boscovich, Key Kim, Marke Brown, Tim Landers (Billy Cobham, Al di Meloa), Steve Jenkins, and Steve Billman. He has been in ensembles directed by Mitch Foreman (Mahavishnu Orchestra), Brian Pezzone (Animaniacs), Carlos Campos, and Steve Pemberton. He graduated this past March of 2022, and has his sights eventually set on Nashville, but for the time being, Roanoke is home, and he is wanting to get back into the community and play.
Brian is a guitarist, bassist, and songwriter based in Roanoke, VA. He is currently playing with Rutledge, a country based band from Virginia. He also tours with Cowboy-the Kid Rock Tribute and has played arenas, festivals, and clubs across the country. His group Lowlife was featured on the TV show Full Throttle Saloon for their performance at the 2014 Sturgis Bike Rally in South Dakota. Brian also plays jazz and fusion with the Elmer Col Jazz group and works as a session musician on guitar and bass for numerous artists in all genres of music. Brian also teaches private lessons and serves as an adjunct lecturer for Roanoke College and Hollins University. In 2011 Brian was honored with the Melody Haven Award for Music Educator of the Year. In his musical ventures, Brian had had the pleasure of sharing stages with Montgomery Gentry, LoCash, Cassadee Pope, Eli Young Band, Brett Michaels, Ted Nugent, Jackyl, Theory of a Deadman, Aztec Trip, Cowboy Crush, Pete Best (orginal drummer of the Beatles, Southern Culture on the Skids, Edwin McCain, Steve Lippia, Dave Brockey, and Albert Bouchard of Blue Oyster Cult, to name a few.
Jerome Claytor is a singer/musician based in Roanoke, Virginia. Jerome grew up singing in church at the age of 5, and in 2002 and 2003, he was entered in the first round of Grammy Nominations and won a Telly Award under the legendary Doc Holiday. He currently performs with R&B group "Touch of Class" in the Roanoke Valley.
Starting out in various local punk rock bands, Marshall Hicks began writing his own songs and arrangements. He continued his curiosity by diving into any instrument, jangler, or sound he could get his hands on and learning it. Having played with many independent touring bands such as: The Missionaries, The Makeout, The Wading Girl, Pissant and Nancy & 2 Meteors, he gained great knowledge and experience of the road, night clubs and bars, and showmanship. As well as playing, Marshall started to release a lot of his own CDs of his bands and recordings. Currently living deep in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, he is behind the drum set with Virginia Electric and also keeping up a few side project and finding time to work on home/studio recordings and solo shows, Marshall doesn’t plan to slow down.
Chris Burton is a songwriter based in Roanoke, VA, and has been playing a variety of music for many years: bluegrass, rock, gospel, and more. He plays every string instrument (except for the fiddle) and has played in numerous bands throughout the course of his musical history. His second project, Wandering Again, had 3 songs that landed on national bluegrass charts in 2015. His compositions have been recorded by many artists, such as The Alex Leach Band, Shannon Slaughter, The Gospel Plowboys, and more. He has opened for Del McCoury and the Nashville Bluegrass Band at the world famous Station Inn, and has won multiple banjo competitions around the valley.
Macklyn Mosley is a native of Roanoke, VA. He is currently the Regional Minority Business Advisor for the Roanoke Region Small Business Development Center, and has previously served as Community Services Assistant of Roanoke Public Libraries. He is also a freelance graphic designer, enjoys fitness, video games, cultural food, and is most passionate about community engagement and multiculturalism being celebrated, whether at work, his church, through his friendships, or in his neighborhood. Macklyn is also a music artist, performing on various stages and working with a mix of hip hop artists in the US, Canada, and the UK. Macklyn enjoys listening to, creating, and performing music. His desire is that his music, along with the rest of his work, would meet individuals where they are, and to know that they’re known and loved by their creator and made in his image.
