DESE Podcasts
This podcast is an opportunity for us to share information and ideas about digital learning. We know that as learners we have preferred ways of assimilating information and learning. Some like to read a book, others like to listen to audiobooks. Others like to read the transcript of a video while others like to listen. We have discovered that the more ways we offer information, the more ways we get the learning out there. This podcast is one more way for the Digital Learning Unit to share information, learn and support educators. It is also a way for us to share our own stories of learning, our mistakes, and our celebrations. It is also another way for us to have connection.
The DESE Digital Learning Unit (formerly Team Digital) is a free resource provided through the Arkansas education cooperatives to provide guidance, support, and training for digital and blended learning. Assistance and training cover a wide variety of digital learning resources.
We support schools as they adopt online providers and design their own online content, to ensure the best digital learning experience for students. We educate stakeholders on best digital learning practices, and support districts in their creation and implementation of digital learning plans. We also partner with digital learning entities, such as Virtual Arkansas and the Office of Innovation for Education, to support the implementation of quality digital content and professional learning.
Additionally, the Digital Learning Unit can support how to evaluate effective online instruction and programs, and create effective Collaborative Team meetings with both in-person and virtual teachers. We support addressing the different levels of HRS and designing an effective guaranteed viable online curriculum.

Vetting Digital Resources can be daunting, however, Dr. Liz Kolb shares insight and practical strategies to lighten the weight of selecting resources that purposefully enhance learning and protect educators for the practice of using technology just for the sake of technology.

Living in Beta Mode Launches it's 3rd Season following the theme of INNOVATE as an acrostic. Episode 2 hosts Cristian Haynes and Kirsten Wilson dive into the first “N” in INNOVATE- N- Novice to expert learner through the lens of UDL with Krystle Merry.
Krystle Merry is a 3rd-year doctoral Razorback-Sooner scholar at the University of Arkansas pursuing her degree in special education with a certificate in transition services and autism. She is a National Board-Certified Teacher (NBCT), intern in the Center on Inclusive Technology & Education Systems at CAST, instructor at the UofA, and is currently on the editorial board for 4 academic journals in special education. She has presented over 30 times across the country in the past 2-3 years including the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) and the Council for Exceptional Children. She has a master’s degree in Gifted and Talented Education with a bachelor’s degree in Middle Childhood Education and an endorsement in special education and in English to speakers of other languages (ESOL) in both Texas and Arkansas.

Engagement Online - The Nine Indicators for Success
In this podcast, Michigan Educators and Online Administrators for LINK Learning and Berrien Springs Public Schools Kristi Teal and Chris Loiselle share their research around student engagement and the 9 indicators for success
Kristi Teall is currently the Executive Director for Link Learning. Link Learning is a virtual program for Berrien Springs Public Schools. Link Learning currently has 16 different locations across the State of Michigan to serve youth at-risk of dropping out of school. Kristi began her career as a middle school teacher which blossomed into becoming a principal, a Curriculum Director, and a Superintendent. With over 30 years of experience from preschool to adult education in many different roles, Kristi brings a vast amount of experience to the table. She was awarded the Annual Educator Award in 2018-19 by the Michigan Association of State and Federal Program Specialists in recognition of valuable contributions and leadership in support of high standards for all Michigan educators and students. Kristi continues to serve the students of Michigan through her work with MASFPS.
Chris began working with Berrien Springs Public Schools building their off site virtual programs in 2011, and as Operations Director, helped develop it into one of the largest virtual high school programs in Michigan. Chris Loiselle has been working in the virtual K-12 field for over 10 years and during that time has developed software and school infrastructure designed to support the tracking and monitoring of student and staff engagement statistics in real-time.

Navigating the Network with Digital Natives
Our guest Kevin Bower is from Lancaster PA and the father of six children. He has 20 years of teaching experience and is currently a sixth-grade teacher in the Hempfield School District. Since 2010, Mr. Bower has been a part-time instructor at his alma mater, Millersville University, where he teaches instructional technology to preservice and practicing teachers. Mr. Bower is also an educational consultant for the Source for Learning and TeachersFirst.com. He moderates OK2Ask professional development sessions and a bi-weekly Twitter chat and assists teachers with integrating MySciLife into their science classroom.
The Penn Manor School District awarded him the Elementary Educator of the Year in 2010, and in 2012 he was the keynote speaker at the IU13 Elementary Technology Conference. Mr. Bower has presented nationally, and various publications have cited his teaching practices. He recently published a collaborative article on using social learning to make real-world connections in science for Science Scope magazine. His research interests focus on using technology to meet the needs of students with diverse abilities.
Kevin will share how he leverages social media in his classroom with his students.

Origin of Ideas
Today we are going to be chatting with guest, Dr. Jason Trumble. Jason Trumble Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Education at the University of Central Arkansas where he teaches preservice and in-service teachers to effectively integrate technology, content, and pedagogy. He is the program coordinator for the UCA education specialist degree in digital age teaching and learning. Dr. Trumble’s research focuses on the intersection of teaching and technology as well as STEM learning, assessment practices, and emerging technologies. He serves currently as the President of the Arkansas Instructional Innovation Association(AIIA) and is the Associate Chair for the Teacher Education Council for the Society for Information Technology in Teacher Education (SITE). Dr. Trumble is also an ISTE Certified Educator.

I don’t know if you’ve ever heard the riddle, “How do you eat an elephant?"
And the answer?
"One bite at a time."
I’ve taken that humorous but true Riddle and started to apply it to my own life probably about 13 years ago. You see, when I started integrating technology into the classroom and also started exploring how to personalize learning for my students I tried to do ALL of the things and ALL of the good stuff all at once. It really started to overwhelm me and I noticed that if I wasn’t careful I was likely to burn out.

This podcast is an opportunity for us to share information and ideas about digital learning. We know that as learners we have preferred ways of assimilating information and learning. Some like to read a book, others like to listen to audiobooks. Others like to read the transcript of a video while others like to listen. We have discovered that the more ways we offer information, the more ways we get the learning out there. This podcast is one more way for the Digital Learning Unit to share information, learn and support educators. It is also a way for us to share our own stories of learning, our mistakes, and our celebrations. It is also another way for us to have connection.
