All of which affected her cycle, mood, and well-being. Doctors always told her everything looked “normal.” But she knew better and was always surprised when they just wanted to prescribe something to mask symptoms vs. getting to the root cause of my issues. After taking a deep dive into Ayurvedic principles and Chinese Medicine herbs and becoming a certified Integrative Health Practitioner, she found the areas that she was either deficient in or too toxic, and got them back into balance through specific protocols. And just like that, I transformed my body and life. Now, she can’t wait to help you detoxify, re-balance your gut and hormones, and optimize your health because a balanced body can't be overweight, overstressed or sick.

About the guest: Susan always knew the power of a rock-solid brand – from a degree in graphic design to a corporate career as a marketer earning a six-figure salary. She was always drawn to the visuals of it all...everything about a brand could be summed up in a photograph, from the promises they make to the dreams they’ll create. Her resume grew as she attended Photographic Center Northwest, and before she knew it, she was drawing from years of experience in visual identity to creating portraits of people from all walks of life. In her time away from the studio, that’s where the camera stays – she committed to being as fully present with those she photographs as she is with friends and family. She shows up for those in front of her camera with the energy she draws from time off the grid, time to reflect, and time with the ones she loves.

Today, I'm sharing the top solutions that every consultant should know.
Do you have a goal of growing a high-impact, high-income consulting business? Do you want the control it will give you over your career, to make great use of your experience, and to make a difference?
Here's the problem – especially if you're brand new, you probably have a misconception of what a consultant does. And if you don't know what a consultant does, you don't know what to sell.
If you don't know what to sell, you avoid marketing like the plague and procrastinate on meeting someone who expresses interest in your services.
In this episode, we're going to turn this around.
I'll be going over my top five consulting solutions – what they are, why you need to know them, and how to get started.
I have shared some of my Disney background with you through this series. The short story is that after my masters in OD, I landed my dream job at Disney as an internal OD consultant. I had a leader who ran our internal department like we were an external consultancy and expected that we invest 20% of our time building up our mastery in the consulting best practices.
We did quarterly work sessions.
We did weekly practice sessions.
We created an intranet site called the OD workbench that contained all of these best practices we could access wherever we were on the property, which served as an inspiration for a program that I created that I called The Consultant's toolbox.
This is why marketing didn't scare me when I started my business, even though it was new to me. I was confident in what I'd do with a client once I got one.
I created a cheat sheet to give you the big picture of the consulting solutions you could be selling your clients. So head on over to www.betsyjordyn.com/solutions and grab yours.

Today I'll discuss the positioning traps that hold consultants back from their impact and earning potential.
To set the context for what I mean by positioning traps – I need to take you back in time to 1997 when my mentor and professor told me – people don't get what you do and what you can offer as an organizational consultant. His feedback was impactful; I will share what he taught me to do and the powerful results!
I learned that if we want to be treated and paid as a strategic partner, we must position ourselves that way. Otherwise, we'll default into one of the positioning traps that will stand in the way of the difference we want to make and the income we want to earn.
This insight about taking charge of my positioning is a theme throughout my consulting and entrepreneurial career – including what I do now as a brand messaging and positioning strategist.
When I got to Disney, I was able to consult with the executives on the strategic projects I mentioned in the last episode because I positioned myself to do that work. I proactively advocated for the work approach I thought was best for my role.
This positioning perspective is behind my approach to landing work, which I call a Partnership Set Up. It is how I grew my business and helped my clients grow small requests into six-figure engagements.
And it's key from a marketing standpoint because the truth is the role of a strategic partner and executive advisor isn't on the org chart and shouldn't be, which I'll explain why in this episode.
Now, let's get into the positioning pitfalls.
Where to dive in: [4:12] Check out the cheat sheet I made for this episode: www.betsyjordyn.com/consulting-approaches
[06:01] Hear why it's so easy to fall into the pair of hands trap and how it can make things worse for your clients.
[11:16] The impact the pair of hands trap has on your income.
[14:54] Why consultants fall into the surrogate leadership trap and its risks.
[21:28] Hear how great consultant positioning is somewhere in the middle of the pair of hands and surrogate leadership trap continuum.
[29:33] Listen to the recap!

Ready to take your place as a trusted advisor and strategic partner to the C-Suite?
Today, I am sharing my secrets to working with the C-Suite in this first episode of my new Organizational Consulting 101 Series.
More and more people want to leave corporate to start their own consulting or coaching businesses for so many reasons:
And out of all the businesses they could start, many choose to consult or coach because of the difference they want to make in the world.
So, to achieve these impact and income goals – they want to advise influential senior leaders in organizations.
Marketing and all things related to marketing and getting clients are the #1 pain point for new and seasoned consultants and coaches. And this is a pain point we're all aware of as we make the transition from employee to entrepreneur, but there's more involved with this marketing challenge than meets the eye.
A second challenge is the transition from leader to consultant or coach, which is a whole new job requiring very different skill sets and perspectives, which I'll share more about in this episode.
Before I hosted this business podcast and had my brand positioning, messaging, mentoring, and brand marketing agency, I was an internal organization development consultant at Walt Disney World.
Disney is where I got my start. I had the great fortune of landing this dream job when I was about to turn 30 years old, and I had the opportunity to work with and advise exceptional leaders on visible, strategic projects like the DAK brand relaunch and the Basics project.
When I left Disney to start my own business, I grew it quickly from $0-$300K within 18 months because I knew how to work with executives and their teams. I learned how to influence them and create results without positional authority. And I'll be sharing these fundamental principles in this episode.
In this episode, you'll hear:
Only personally powerful consultants and coaches can speak truth to power. Tune in for the secrets you need to succeed in the C-Suite.
Where to dive in: [5:22] Hear about the quiz I created to help you determine if you're ready to be a consultant or executive advisor. Get it at: https://www.betsyjordyn.com/consulting-quiz
[6:00] Number one secret to consulting success and working with the C-Suite.
[09:35] Why consultants need to remember that the client is not the organization.
[14:34] Why the position for a consultant is never going to be on the org chart.
[18:41] Hear why organizations don't care whether you're a coach or a consultant.
[24:00] Learn the big reason you won't succeed in the C-Suite until you accept this key reality.
[34:51] Betsy recaps the five secrets to consulting excellence and why your role is important.
Next steps: 1. Download my free quiz will help you assess your current level of political savvy and five other attributes of in-demand, influential organizational consultants, coaches, and executive advisors. www.betsyjordyn.com/consulting-quiz 2. If your marketing messages and strategies aren’t getting you in front of the corporate buyers you want, let’s work on this. Head to my website at www.betsyjordyn.com/services to learn more about my 1:1 business and brand strategy mentoring. When you’re over there, you can also learn more about the brand-new group coaching/mastermind experience I’m launching in January. Early bird pricing is available now. 3. Next week, I’ll be talking about the Pair of Hands positioning trap (and other positioning traps) that way too many consultants and coaches fall into that keep them from influencing the change that they know is possible for their clients and earning what they worth. So hit subscribe now wherever you’re listening, so you don’t miss it. And be sure to let your colleagues who want to work with executives know about it too.

Have you ever gotten tongue tied when someone asks you what you do?
I know I have!
Today, I’m wrapping up my "Brand You" series by sharing tips and a script that gets people curious and excited about what you do.
"What do you do?" Is one of the first questions people ask, literally everywhere you go - networking events abound. And each time you go to the grocery store, meet neighbors, go to the kids' soccer match, attend holiday parties, it is a chance to meet clients or people who know your potential clients.
But, if you do not have an engaging answer to the question, you will lose people when you begin speaking. And you’ll leave opportunity on the table.
However, when you have a compelling “What Do You Do?” statement, people will immediately know why they want to work with you or refer you to friends or colleagues.
And you’ll instantly stand out among the crowd because the majority of consultants and coaches don’t do this well.
I have been a business owner for 15 years, studied modern marketing, and working with hundreds of clients on their business development, brand building, and marketing. I'ver heard it many times, when people get the blank stares, they feel like they need to work on their pitch.
There is a difference between a pitch and an engaging story of your business, and that is what we will talk about in this episode.
For consultants and coaches, traditional sales don’t work.
A pitch is about sales.
A story is about service.
I have a free PDF that goes along with today's episode. Check it out here: www.betsyjordyn.com/script.
It’s time to share the story of what you do with clarity, confidence and credibility!
Where to dive in: [2:30] Hear why traditional sales and pitches don't work for consultants and coaches
[4:00] The four mistakes consultants or coaches make when asked, "What do you do?"
[7:20] Why you need to ground your "What I do" statement in your ideal client's transformation and story
[10:34] Hear how to be flexible and deliver the "What I do" script to different audiences in different settings
[18:57] Why no one wants to hear about your generic titles or aspirational phrases. Hear how the right script helps people get to know you.
[20:27] Hear the big recap!
Next steps: 1. To to betsyjordyn.com/script and start to work on your ”What I do” script 2. If you want personalized guidance through the process, I’d love to work with you. Does the crowded consulting and coaching marketplace intimidate you and hold you back from what you could be doing to launch or grow your business?
I've got GREAT news! You can stop worrying about the competition because today, I will teach you how to conduct a market scan and find your niche.
The best strategy for dealing with competition is to make the competition irrelevant.
For the last couple of weeks, I've been talking about networking, which I thought was a break from my Brand You series, but the reality is – what makes you a great networker, market scanner, and brand builder are the same skills – it's all about listening and tapping into needs.
In today's episode, I'll walk you through the seven steps of your market scan and how to mine for the intel around what makes you unique and how you can stand out – even if you're brand new and just starting.
Before we start – let's define a market scan. A market scan is when you talk to former clients and potential clients so you can better understand them better. It's when you try to see the world from their perspective, how they define and describe their problems, the options they consider, why those options fall short, and identify the unmet needs in the market.
Armed with this intel, you'll be able to:
Now that we're clear on what is a market scan and why it's valuable listen to the episode to get into the seven steps!
Where to dive in: [1:20] What is a market scan?
[7:32] Step one: Hear how to get clear on what you want to know and discover.
[10:07] Step two: Hear how to collect and analyze your existing data.
[10:50] Step three: Hear how to decide what type of marketing scan assessment you want to do. Hear how.
[13:15] Step four: Hear how to decide who you want to include in your assessment.
[14:34] Step five: Learn how to design your questions and probes.
[17:32] Step six: How to survey your audience and follow up - and why!
[19:05] Step seven: Hear what to do with your findings.
[22:25] Hear the quick recap of all seven steps.
[24:00] What can you do right now to start a market scan.
Next steps: 1. Start small by simply getting curious, especially when people call you for help. If you're going to probe on anything, probe to understand pain, goals, and human needs. 2. Then talk to former clients. 3. If you're unsure which way you want to take your business and it's holding you back from getting your website done or getting out there and marketing yourself, this is your chance to get powerful group help! Want to know what it looks like to take a strategic approach to networking? I for sure do.
Tune into this special interview where I'm in the hot seat! I asked Contacts Count President and Networking Guru Vern Schellenger to do an on-air coaching session with me to help me craft my own personal and business networking strategy.
I recently moved to Colorado from Orlando, where I lived for 31 years. So, I need to build a new network. I can build my new network haphazardly, as I'm used to, or I can get strategic like my client Vern suggests, saving me time and making the whole process more enjoyable.
Which is what we all want from your networking, right? Who has extra time going to endless networking events or emails that yield lukewarm responses like "Ummm, sounds interesting, good luck with that."
In this episode, you'll hear:
Be a fly on the wall as Vern coaches me on how to network in this on-air coaching session.
Where to dive in:

[24:46] Vern helps me share my "what I do" statement more effectively through a two-part strategy
[34:04] Why there isn't a single answer to your "what I do" question
Next Steps: 1. If you want a more strategic approach to networking, check out Vern's website at www.contactscount.com. And while you're there, join my team and me in celebrating this website's official launch. We have worked hard to help Vern pinpoint precisely what makes Contacts Count unique and one-of-a-kind, create messages and copy that express that unique value, and then surround those words with powerful images and a fun and engaging custom design. 2. If you want an online home that expresses the essence of who you are and your unique mission, my team and I would love to help you. Book a call with me at www.betsyjordyn.com/schedule, and let's chat about your project.

Today, I'm continuing my Brand You series. Last week I shared with you what a brand is and why you need one. If you missed it, definitely go back and listen.
But first, I have big news! After living in Orlando for over 30 years, I moved to Denver! Significant time change that I will tell you about later. One of the changes I had to make was with my car, as the Toyota Corolla I bought a few months ago isn’t going to work in the mountains. And everyone had one recommendation for me – a Subaru, which should arrive any day. And this whole experience is a perfect example of the power of a well-positioned brand.
The big takeaway from this episode is that you have a brand whether you do branding work or not because, ultimately, consumers position brands. So the key is to take charge of that impression by understanding how consumers position brands which is what today’s episode is all about.
In this episode, you'll hear:
Our goal is to get your brand Suburu clear – meaning that the connection between you and the clients you want to help is so strong that you become the obvious no-brainer choice or recommendation.
Where to dive in: [2:20] Hear one of the biggest branding mistakes consultants or coaches make.
[7:05] What is the problem you solve for clients? How strong is the link between a problem and you?
[10:34] What makes you unique and distinct in your expertise? What's the difference between expertise and experience?
[12:29] What is the deeper meaning, higher purpose, and intangible value you offer your clients?
[16:17] Hear the big recap and next steps so you can get brand clarity.
Next steps: 1. Evaluate your brand clarity. Go back through this episode and answer the questions provided. If you're stuck, acknowledge that you're not alone! 2. If you need someone to walk you through the process, check out my services: https://www.betsyjordyn.com/services 3. Conduct a market scan! Are you a consultant or coach who knows it's crucial to build your brand but honestly has no clue what that means? Is it a logo or tagline?
Today, I'm starting a new series called Brand You. And I am so excited!
By the end of this series, you'll get big boosts of clarity on what makes you unique, how you can stand out in the marketplace, and use your natural strengths to attract clients magnetically.
You'll also get insight into what it looks like to monetize your best-at strengths and have a business that supports your purpose and profit priorities.
Branding, to me, isn't some marketing exercise. It's about identity and reflecting your authentic self to the world, which is the most courageous thing you can do!
In this episode, you'll hear:
Carl Jung once said that the privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are.
Branding, when done right, takes that a step further. The privilege of a lifetime is to become and express who you truly are and the value you uniquely offer.
This journey starts today with this foundational episode, where we'll explore what a brand is and why it's vital to your consulting and coaching business.
Where to dive in:
[1:49] Hear what a brand is not!
[4:03] A brand is rational and emotional; tune in for what it means and why it's crucial.
[06:07] Why would a consultant or coach want to invest in brand building?
[8:52] If you don't position your brand, your client will. Hear why you need to take control of your brand image.
[13:00] Hear what creates a breakthrough brand and how to shape future clients' thinking.
[14:36] Steps to take charge of your brand today!
[17:26] Hear what I've added to my process to help consultants and coaches create a breakthrough brand.
Next steps: 1. Audit the touchpoints along your client's journey with you–from the second they find out about you through finishing up work with you. What image are you portraying? What are you communicating about your value? Is it what you want it to be? 2. If your brand isn't communicating what you want, take a holistic approach to your brand meaning. You need strategy, copy and design to all work together. Everything needs to be consistent and aligned with one another to create a cohesive brand. Head to my website atwww.betsyjordyn.com/portfolio to see some of the sites we built. 3. Pay attention to where you might get stuck or avoid brand building–fear of being seen, money fears, imposter syndrome, and having a business you don't love. This is where connection can help.
I'm also super excited about the Brand Breakthrough Mastermind Experience I'm launching in a couple of months. I'll lead a small group of consultants and coaches through the steps of clarifying and building their breakthrough brand and messaging, adding the dimension of community and support to the guidance I provide. This allows my clients to have more people to test and validate their ideas, provide cheerleading and accountability, and help more people. I'll be sharing more about this program in the coming weeks, but if I have piqued your interest and you don't want to wait for info, email me at betsy@betsyjordyn.com
Next week I'll be continuing my Brand You series and will be sharing with you four parts of a breakthrough brand. So hit subscribe now wherever you're listening to this podcast so you don't miss out on actionable ideas on strengthening and improving your brand perception.

About my guest: Jodee started her Totally Fabulous agency back in 2005 and over the 17 years she has developed her ethos “architect your joy”. The premise being that when everyone works in their joy, they over deliver and this is where success for both clients and agency derives. This ethos has enabled her to help her husband retire from his stressful corporate job and for them to buy their dream home in the country to house her family, four cats and four dogs. Live is good when you architect your joy.

Five Things You Need To Know About Your Ideal Client (Ep39)
Why You Need An Ideal Client Archetype (Ep38)
Want to know what it takes to lead a company to scalable profits?
Today, I'm chatting with Mark Johnson. He most recently served as the Chief Executive Officer for Concord Servicing – a company he led to record-breaking growth that culminated in its sale from the founder to a private equity firm.
I met Mark more than ten years ago when I was advising the leaders at Wyndham Vacation Ownership on an organizational transformation project.
I'm in my "favorite executive" series, and Mark is on my list! Mark is a sage analyst and strategist who creates results through respect and honoring the system he leads. He leads his team to success because of his laser focus on balance between the customer, employee, and business results.
He stands out among dozens of incredible executives because of his thoughtful and intentional approach to everything!
Since we worked together, he took on massive promotions – he became the Chief Hospitality Officer at Wyndham, a very different role than his real estate law background, and then eventually a CEO for another company. So I was curious about the role his sage, analytical, and strategic gifts played in these transitions.
I wanted Mark on the show as part of my "favorite executive series of all time" because I wanted him to share how he continued to use his sage archetype gifts as a C-Suite executive, which is usually comprised of more visionary/warrior types like former Disney COO Jim MacPhee who I interviewed in ep 40.
In this episode, you'll hear:
It turns out that using balanced, systems honoring approaches to business growth and change isn't reserved for consultants and coaches like us! Mark will share with you how to keep his eye on the balance between the customer, employee, and business results.
Where to dive in: [1:50] Hear about David's background and why he went to law school
[7:28] What David learned he liked about being a lawyer and how it carried over into his work and relationships
[10:20] Hear why you have a big problem if you lose on strategy or culture and why you have to take care of the customer, associate, and financials to succeed in business
[15:53] How he safely left his law profession and had to grasp onto a new label.
[22:46] Hear how David came into a new role with a different leadership style than his predecessors and what he had to do to gain trust.
[28:29] David's transition into a CEO position in a different organization, the leadership style he took with him, and the new things he learned.
[33:39] How a strength can also be a weakness.
[40:00] What consultants and coaches need on their website to attract C-suite leaders like David.
[54:06] Why the organization is in trouble if you focus on the individual rather than the group

Do you want to know how to get a seat at the table in the C-Suite and get senior leaders to buy into transformational change that you know they need that they don't quite see yet?
I'm in the middle of what I'm calling my "Favorite Executive Series of all time" series, and so, of course, I had to include Sarah King in this series! Sarah King, the Chief People and Diversity Officer for Darden Restaurants, is an extraordinary leader, especially within the HR field.
Sarah and I met in 2012 when she hired me to consult with her and the senior team at Wyndham Vacation Ownership on a massive org transformation project she was leading.

In this episode, you'll hear:
One of the biggest myths about HR that many consulting mentors promote is that HR is a gatekeeper that stands in the way of consultants and coaches landing business. That is not true! Sarah will tell us why and so much more so you can get your own set of keys to the C-Suite!
Sarah is fun and real. So get ready!

[43:57] When culture is a competitive advantage, what business case would you present to your client?
[45:43] Why you need to know the success criteria of the company you're going into as a consultant or coach.
[51:37] Hear the advice Sarah would give to her younger self.
[52:55] Sarah talks about why people buy people, not products, and why you can't underestimate the value of building a connection with the people you work with.

Do you want to know what executives in world-class companies think about leadership and why they hire consultants and coaches?
Today, I'm chatting with one of my favorite executives of all time, Jim MacPhee, recently retired Chief Operating Officer and self-proclaimed Experience Steward for Walt Disney World Parks and Resorts. He is also the author of the newly released book Engage, Inspire, Lead.
I have worked on and off with Jim since 1999, first as his Organization Development Consultant at Disney and, more recently, as a sounding board when he retired from his 43-year career.
I invited Jim to join me on the show for several reasons.
First, I have been talking for the last few episodes about the importance of not just identifying your ideal client but getting in their hearts and minds so you can position yourself, products/services, and copy to connect with them. But figuring out how executives think can be challenging for consultants and coaches if we haven't been executives before. So, I thought, why not bring on some of my former clients so you can hear for yourself?
Second, Jim is one of the best executives and lives the values driving consultants and coaches like us, especially around purpose and relationship. It's hard to stay encouraged in our short-term profit-obsessed world that these unicorn executives exist. But they do. Jim offers powerful insight into what created his leadership philosophies and practices.
In this episode, you'll hear why:
Ready for new ways of thinking about leadership and actionable inspiration to find and work with C-Suite executives (or executives on their way to the C-Suite) like Jim? You will not want to miss this episode. This interview is THAT powerful.
Where to dive in: [6:55] Hear about Jim's first leadership role at Disney and how he navigated that time in 1978.
[11:34] Jim shares the Disney park most dear to his heart and how he navigated the massive growth the park experienced with its opening.
[14:50] Betsy shares the seeds of Jim's philosophy as he talks about his early experiences at Disney.
[22:36] What is the difference between a leader and a manager? Hear why Jim's mindfulness approach influences how things get done and, ultimately, great leadership.
[27:56] Hear about the provocative organizational structure Jim created for Animal Kingdom, how it was ahead of its time, and his major regret.
[32:10] Jim shares why leaders must surround themselves with people who dare to think differently.
[39:09] Betsy labels Jim's superpower and talks about being a generalist leader and how it relates to his book.
[45:03] Hear about Jim's leadership principles and personal beliefs.
[52:02] Why you need a specialist and generalist mindset to balance day-to-day and a long-term vision.
[1:08] Tune in for Jim's advice to consultants and coaches advising the C-Suite.
What's next: * Buy Jim's new book if you need to develop your Circle of Influence, get in balance, and lean into time-tested leadership guidance. * If you're an org looking for leadership, culture, experience, and transformation, connect with Jim to learn more. * Are you looking to develop your "why" into branding for your consulting or coaching business? If so, check out my services! Let's craft the words, visual branding, and website you need to connect to your ideal client's heart.
About my guest: Jim MacPhee began his career with Walt Disney World in the summer of 1978 and retired on April1st, 2021 as Chief Operating Officer / Senior Vice President, Operations, at the Walt Disney World® Resort. In the spring of 2002, Jim returned to Walt Disney World®, and in 2004 was promoted to Vice President of Park Operations Development, Optimization, and Standardization. In early 2007, Jim accepted the role of Vice President, Epcot®, a position he held until March 2009, when he was assigned to lead the transformation of the Walt Disney World vacation experience via the introduction of My Magic+, resulting in co-authorship of multiple patents in the creation and introduction of experience technology enhancements.
He was promoted to the role of Senior Vice President, Walt Disney World® Parks in 2010 and was responsible for the strategic direction of Walt Disney World® Theme Parks, in addition to operationalizing My Magic + across the landscape of the site. In January 2018, Jim was promoted to the role of Chief Operating Officer/Senior Vice President, Walt Disney World® Resort. I'll never forget the first time I downloaded Pandora.
I set up my channel with my favorite song, and when the next song came on, I was so happy because it was another one of my favorites! And the next one was another hit I loved! Pandora just got me.
That is the power you'll unleash for your ideal clients when you do the work on your ideal clients.
You'll write copy that makes you feel like you were reading their minds – which is far more credibility-building than your latest certification or advanced degrees. And you'll create a product or service experience that makes them say, "This is what I need."
I realized I did a good job on my ideal client archetype this past week when I had two intro calls with people who said similar things. All my work pinpointing the person I want to serve helped me craft my programs - my services help people pull out their vision for their business and put it into words. And it's paying off because I'm attracting the people I love helping who need the gifts I love offering. It's a win-win.
And this is the goal we are after for you!
I want you to have such a clear picture of the person you want to serve that Lin-Manuel Miranda could use your ideal client archetype to write the next Hamilton about that person.
Today, we're talking about the five simple steps to developing your ideal client archetype, which builds on what we talked about in episodes 37 and 38, why people don't get it when you speak and write about what you do and what is ideal client archetype and why you need one. So if you missed either of these episodes, go back and listen.
Let's go from theory into practice and walk through the five simple steps to creating your ideal client archetype so you can have clarity on exactly who wants and needs your consulting and coaching, plus the person you'd love to work with. Create a win-win path for ease in your business.
In this episode, you'll hear:
Where to dive in: [1:42] How to write copy that makes prospective clients feel like you're reading their mind
[3:39] If you had it all your way? Who would you work with?
[6:45] What are the surface details about the person you want to serve? Hear how demographics are a key part of clarifying business models and needs.
[12:08] How your ideal archetype reveals the energy exchange that happens between you and your ideal client
[18:43] Do you know what your ideal client is in pain about and what motivates them to move?
[22:00] Hear why knowing your ideal client's limitations inform your products and services
[27:25] Hear the recap!
What's next: 1. Get into the head of your ideal client. The easiest solution is to talk to real, live clients and ask them meaningful questions to draw out of them their pain, goals, and limits and the words they use to describe this information. "When you speak to everyone, you speak to no one."
This quote from Seth Godin was a catalyst that completely transformed my approach to growing my own business and helping others do the same.
It makes sense that as consultants and coaches with tons of skills, certifications, frameworks, and methodologies, our path to success is either narrowing down the services we offer or making our approach attractive to many potential clients. And the result is what I talked about in last week's episode – people don't get it when we speak and write about what we do.
So, what's the alternative? What's a better way to connect with clients?
Today, we're talking about Ideal Client Archetypes – what they are, why you need one, and what will hold you back from creating one.
In this episode, you'll hear:
I promised to share five things you needed to know about your ideal client last week. But instead, I've decided to add this episode to lay the groundwork and build the case for why it's essential to deeply understand WHO your business serves and how it's the key step to getting into flow.
Where to dive in: [1:37] What happens when you don't know your ideal client
[4:17] The right archetype drills down to who hires you, why, and how this influences fees
[6:12] How understanding your ideal client reveals their inner roles and journey and informs how you can position yourself as a solution
[7:51] The tactical and financial reasons why you need an ideal client archetype
[10:42] How your ideal client archetype changes your approach and fears of marketing
[12:05] The strategic reason why you need an ideal client archetype
[14:04] The common objections to creating an ideal client archetype and Bety's response
[17:46] Myths that keep people from using an ideal client archetype
[23:06] Hear the quick recap and next steps
Next steps: 1. To start creating your ideal client, list everyone you have done fantastic work with and think about clients, former bosses, colleagues, and volunteer work. Next, identify what these people have in common regarding demographics, personality, and problems. What is the common thread? 2. Get curious when people reach out to you for help. Ask them about what's happening in their life, career, and business that makes them think of you. Probe more about the problem they are dealing with and why getting a solution matters to them. 3. Need help? Check out my end-to-end creative brand services at www.betsyjordyn.com/services or book a call with me for a free consult at www.betsyjordyn.com/schedule to get one-on-one help unearthing your ideal client and reaching this group through your branding, copy, and website.

Have you ever been asked "what do you do?" at a networking event or just at a party, and despite your best attempt at a response, all you got was blank stares? Or have you spent a ton of time working on website copy, and the response was crickets?
Today we're talking about why people don't get it when you talk and write about what you do. In my early days as a business owner, it was so hard to explain what I did that I often avoided situations where I would have to, which affected more than my marketing results. It affected my self-esteem!
Since then, I have learned what got in my way of effectively communicating what I did and what to do instead, which is what I want to share with you today. Hear four sneaky reasons why you might struggle with this like I did and my strategies for turning this around.
In this episode, you'll hear:
Where to dive in: [1:40] Why making your potential clients feel dumb with industry jargon pushes them away, why what motivates you might not motivate them, and the solution.
[6:60] How corporate speak is the opposite of marketing speech and will keep you from connecting with your ideal client. Tune in for the solution.
[10:39] Do you over edit while you write or speak? Hear why this keeps you in analysis paralysis.
[15:37] "When you speak to everyone, you speak to no one." Tune in for why you won't resonate with everyone and how this influences your message.
[17:30] Hear the quick recap along with solutions.
Next steps: 1. Identify what is standing in your way of clearly communicating what you do and try out one of the solutions I offered. 2. Next time you must put a message together either verbally or in writing – try my WHO, WHAT, HOW communication method. 3. Be sure to check out my Done-For-You Copywriting Service at www.betsyjordyn.com/copywriting. You'll get amazing website copy FAST, plus you'll see tangible examples of how your messages and ideas get turned into words that connect, convince and convert. 4. Have you hit the top of your profession or exceeded your business goals and wondered what's next?
Tune in for insights and tips on taking the daring leap into your second act and the dramatic change that can lead to greater success, significance, and happiness.
I have big news, on May 14th, I got married to the absolute love of my life!
We went to Nantucket for our honeymoon, where I went ten years ago for a personal business retreat. It was also where I had the initial idea to pivot my business from consulting to executives to mentoring other consultants and coaches. It took me a long time to get here!
I can honestly say that I have a better life and business than I ever envisioned ten years ago. I had no idea that the superpowers I wanted to build my business on were my brand building and strengths-whispering gifts. Today, I've built a creative branding team who can turn the brand positioning strategy I help my clients create into an online platform that reflects the essence of who they are and magnetically appeals to the clients they most want to serve.
I also had no idea that the type of love that I have with my husband existed outside of the movies and books. So, as my husband and I had a magical time in Nantucket, I couldn't help but ponder my journey. I thought about what it took for me to go from Disney, to a profitable consulting business, to a business that I love, and from relationships that were not the best to the incredible ones I have now.
In this episode, you'll hear:
I share these musings with you because I want to share what's possible with anyone entering their second act! So if you have a career and are thinking about starting a business, or you have a business, but you want it to be more impactful, this episode is for you.
Where to dive in: [04:12] The role and purpose of a second act. How to operate in the "already" but the "not yet."
[7:47] Tune in for what you have to leave behind to enter the second act.
[10:08] Why you need a mentor to succeed in the second act if you want to avoid unnecessary pain and struggle
[14:43] Hear about the values in the second act versus the third act and why they matter.
[17:15] Listen to the quick recap and an important reminder about why you have to go through your second act to reach act three.
Next steps: 1. Visit my blog to see pictures of my magical wedding and honeymoon. See more here. 2. If you want more from your career, business, and life than what you're experiencing, look at what you're holding on to that no longer serves you. Again, no judgment here – I did that for years, but I promise you the life you want won't appear until we let go of the life we don't want. 3. If you're sick and tired of doing all of this business and life transformation on your own and ready for a more personalized branding approach, contact me! Katie is a leadership consultant, entrepreneur, keynote speaker, and best-selling author.
As your virtual mentor – I encourage you to listen to the conversation with Katie from a couple of angles. First, she offers some tips on creating learning organizations and leaders who are learners. Second, if you're a consultant or coach who works with organizations, pay attention to how you can consider these best practices as part of your consulting and coaching.
Katie is a Fullbright Scholar who has lived all around the world and has built her career and business success on her learning superpower. It's the subject of her keynote and her book, which I initially thought would be the focus of our conversation.
But when we talked, it was all about the power of learning, having a learning mindset and lifestyle, and how transformative learning is to organizations and business owners.
In our conversation, Katie shares her unique experience of starting her consulting business, moving to Japan, and forging a deep connection with long-term Toyota executive Isao Yoshino. We go deep into the power of having a learning mindset and how it creates the conditions for excellence, risk-taking, and so much more. How can you use your strengths to land more clients and earn what you're worth?
Leslie Lyons and I do a deep dive into the Enneagram tool and how to use it to sell more effectively and overcome the issues and challenges that cause us to sabotage ourselves and play small.
Today, I'm wrapping up my "Owning Your Strengths" series with a powerhouse conversation with my powerful guest Leslie Lyons on how all of this translates to the ultimate goal with our businesses – landing clients who will value us and pay us what we're worth.
And this is where Leslie comes in. Leslie is an expert in helping people build businesses that feeds their souls and bank account. And she does this by assisting them to not just believe in their heads in the value but embody that value, especially when it comes to sales conversations.
Join me as Leslie inspires me and has me rolling on the floor laughing!
We talk about how her background in ministry and ownership of a pole dancing studio influences her business coaching process (and I promise you it fits).
We also differentiate between simply agreeing that we have worth and truly embodying that worth and the impact of that difference in our sales abilities.
Personally, Leslie helped me see my sales strengths and how I got them from a combo of my personality and the role modeling from the best salesperson I ever knew, my Dad. He made his customers feel seen and valued. I always thought that my approach to landing clients came from my Disney experience and how I was taught to set up strategic partnerships with my clients. It turns out that training resonated so much with me because it matched my strengths.
In this episode, you'll hear:
Where to dive in:
[4:39] Hear how Leslie's from HR to recruiting to educational sales to opening a pole dancing studio. Discover how her purpose remained constant, but the container changed.

Get ready for on-air coaching on pivoting your brand and business from pair of hands to sought-after expert with my guest Dianna Deeney.
In today's episode, you'll be a fly on the wall as Dianna and I tap into her ideal business model (which isn't what she initially had), her unique superpowers, and how she can stand out for the clients she wants to serve.
We also brainstormed different ways to position some of the program ideas she has been percolating on. You'll hear it all in real-time!
Dianna and I had a unique business, "meet cute." We were both at a speaking skills intensive retreat hosted by Speaking Your Brand, which was an amazing experience for so many reasons. One of my fellow participants was Dianna, a quality engineering consultant who seemed like she already knew me when I met her.
And she did! It turns out she had found me online last year and bought one of my courses. She shared with me how she was working hard on transitioning from a "pair of hands" to an expert advisor, and I thought it would be great to have her on my podcast and dive into that conversation.
What sealed the deal for me was when she got up in front of the group to practice her signature talk. I could tell from meeting Dianna how brilliant she is as an engineer. But when she got up on stage, she was a natural with a wicked sense of humor.
My thought was, "man, she has a unique combo of skills – I would love to get my branding hands on." So, I begged Dianna to let me put her on the branding hot seat for my podcast, and she graciously agreed.
In this episode, you'll hear:
If my other guests inspired you, you're going to love Dianna! My "Owning Your Strengths" series brought you guests that have discovered how to build a business out of the best of why they are and what they offer the world. They've gone beyond the WHAT-ifs and experienced the magic of working with someone like me who packages their brilliance and gives them words to express it. Hear that work in real-time on today's episode.
Where to dive in: [7:09] Hear about Dianna's engineering background, the "why" that pushed her to start her own business, and her need to rebrand
[12:40] Hear what changed in Dianna's life and prompted her rebrand
[17:42] Dianna shares how changes in her life inform how she wants to shift her business and brand
[20:30] Dianna explores her ideal client if she "had it all her way" and how it informs her business model
[27:27] We explore the different sides of Dianna that reflect her superpowers
[35:33] Why Dianna needs to do a market scan and what steps she can take to do this review
[43:55] How to test out whether a course is a good idea before spending time and dollars on development
[49:14] Hear what Dianna would tell herself when she was just starting out

I'm going to take you behind the scenes and into the HOW.

Where to dive in: [5:42] How you stand out in the crowd as a consultant and coach
[11:34] Why you need a credible website that converts and warms people up to become clients
[15:51] Why you need to ditch the corporate speak and trained language on your website
[18:32] What you need to add on every page of your website to help people convert
[20:00] The strategy you need to be a premium brand and land clients, plus how to take action today
[24:36] How to position your proposal and pricing for partnership and the big mistake people make that keeps them from being paid as a partner
[27:40] The number one secret/strategy/shift to create your premium brand and positioning
Next steps: * Think about how you serve and the problem you solve. * Identify one change that will turn your website into a lead generation and conversion machine. * Create a short article, social post, or video about the question you get asked all the time. * Apply the secret that will help you shift your copy, website, services, and pricing to help you create a premium brand position. * And if you need help, book time with me.

Why It's Hard To See Your Strengths (Ep25)
In today's episode, Jahaan Blake explores how she let go of the "shoulds" and "ought to's" to become the champion of her dreams.
I was Jahaan's first business mentor when she started her business. We worked through her brand positioning as a consultant to the sports industry who transformed front-line teams into brand ambassadors, which made logical sense given her experience working for the Red Sox, Dodgers, and the Cubs.
She did a fantastic job with her website copy, launched, and immediately got clients. And when we worked through her proposals, it hit her. This wasn't her dream business! Instead, she wanted to focus on this other expertise she developed alongside her formal career. Jahaan wanted to mentor high-achieving women who wanted to break into the industry.
So we got to work on pivoting her copy, and this business was born, and today she is crushing it!
During our talk, Jahaan was open about the fears she faced when starting her business. She even shared how to handle the well-meaning feedback that others give when dealing with normal fears and imposter syndrome from exploring things outside our comfort zones.
But my favorite part of our conversation is her philosophy of stepping into your power!
She has stretched her thought leadership by starting a podcast called "Game of her own," with over 200 episodes.
Jahaan had to learn to step into her power and not do the safe thing that others might have wanted her to do to get to this place.
In this episode, you'll hear:
On a personal note, before working with Jahaan, I was primarily focused on brand building for consultants. However, through our experience, I realized that many of my clients think they want to start a consulting business when they want to create a coaching business. That's when I began to focus on serving both consultants and coaches and changed my process to include coaching around this upfront.
Where to dive in: [7:06] Hear about Jahaan's transition into consulting and the bad advice she took.
[15:00] Why Jahaan wished she had a thought partner when she made her big transition and why she has always needed a coach.
[18:34] Challenges Jahaan faced when she started her consulting business.
[20:57] The fears that made Jahaan initially made her services too broad.
[24:11] How the processes I went through with Jahaan shaped my own business.
[36:26] Why offering the right work to the right people feels like selling to help instead of selling to make money.
[44:03] How Jahaan had to go through her own journey of stepping into power to help others do the same
Next steps: * Do what you need to do to step into your power. If you are still looking for validation and unhappy where you're working, it's time to act! * If you want your own business but aren't sure what type of business you want, I got you. Let's chat. About My Guest: Jahaan Blake is a 15-year front-office employee turned Career Coach & Fan Experience, Consultant. While working for the Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Chicago Cubs, her favorite part of the role was helping others level up their career. That's exactly what she does today! Jahaan empowers women with what she has learned in the Major Leagues. She helps high-achieving women in sports and entertainment who feel stuck, frustrated, and defeated find their voice and tackle whatever keeps them from getting what they want out of their career.

Do you have your own business? Does it bring you joy?
Or are you thinking seriously about starting your own business and want one that brings you joy? Do you need a push of encouragement to make this happen?
Get ready for actionable inspiration from Jennifer Starns. She is a seasoned software professional turned career mentor to aspiring software consultants.
Over the past year, we've been working together on her business brand, positioning strategy, visual branding, website copy, and design. Plus, Jennifer just formally launched her coaching practice a couple of weeks ago!
In the last few episodes, my guests and I discussed how to discover and leverage your strengths and superpowers as the foundation of your consulting and coaching business. We have also dived into the challenges that stand in the way of that discovery.
In this episode, Jennifer and I talk about her journey into business ownership and how she overcame this hidden challenge that many mid-career people face when it comes to starting their business - the expertise that they formally created through their education and experience isn't the expertise that they want to use to build a business.
On the surface, Jennifer's most logical business model was to start her own software consulting. But her heart wasn't in it because what was meant for her related to the informal expertise she developed alongside her formal expertise. Jennifer is great at mentoring other people, especially heart-centered, logical women, and equipping them for success as software consultants!
Today, Jennifer and I talk about how she got to this a-ha moment, the joy it created in her, and how that joy generated fuel and momentum to get her business launched, get outside her comfort zone, and start marketing herself, which was very new.
In this episode, you'll hear:
Where to dive in: [4:25] Hear about what made Jennifer decide to start her own business.
[10:36] The process Jennifer went through to figure out who she was and the business model she wanted. Jennifer shares what ignites her work.
[15:28] Our work revealed how Jennifer's archetype is different from her original career. Hear how it's now the center of her consulting business.
[21:23] Jennifer is living in strength and joy using the gifting/calling she's been given for this life. Hear why this goes beyond strengths.
[27:46] Hear why Jennifer serves women in the software industry and where her superpowers come into play.
[39:40] Jennifer shares what it was like writing her website copy after getting clarity on her business.
[47:03] Hear what Jennifer would tell herself when she was thinking about starting her own consulting business.

How to Reverse Engineer Your Fear with Roy Bell (Ep27)
Reposition Your Strengths to Create Your Dream Business with Roy Bell (Ep26)
Why It's Hard To See Your Strengths (Ep25)
Are you ready to find your superpower?
Even though you've taken personality tests and can easily list your strengths, you may still be unclear about what you do that makes you unique and intensely valuable to the people you want to serve.
You might even know how your approach to consulting or coaching differs from others, but you can't isolate that point of differentiation or what drives it.
When you are operating from your superpower, you are in flow, confident, and bold! When you're in this zone of genius, you make more and work less or feel like you're working less because you're doing what makes you happy!
Here is one reason it's hard to really find your superpower:
Strengths are a great description of what we're innately good at and better at than others. But this language isn't sufficient for describing our genius or superpowers because I believe genius is more than what's in our DNA. It's about gifts that we are given for this life that reflect our purpose and joy! The word genius comes from Latin and means "attendant spirit present from one's birth."
We need to get beyond personality tests that give you yet another list of your strengths and weaknesses. Instead, we need language that conveys the power of your being, how you show up with your clients, and what you activate in them.
We need the language of archetypes.
As you listen to this episode, think about which family of archetypes feels most like home to you. Do not focus on where you're successful or proficient, but zoom in on what feels MOST like you - in your core.
In this episode, you'll hear:
Where to dive in: [1:33] Why you can't find your superpower by only looking at your strengths.
[3:39] Archetypes are the universal language of the soul. Hear about how you see them in everyday life and media.
[6:26] Hear about the four families of archetypes based on how people approach work and how to discover which one is right for you.
[7:14] Tune in for more about the Visionary Family and famous Visionaries like Walt Disney.
[9:10] Hear about the Sage Family, how they step in after Visionaries, and famous Sages like Oprah.
[10:46] Learn more about the Caretaker Family, where they place their value, and famous Caretakers like Ted Lasso.
[12:53] Hear about the Warrior Family, how they serve relative to other archetypes, and famous Warriors like Erin Brockovich.
[14:00] Discover why it's so hard to find your superpower and identify your archetype.
[14:53] The quick test to know the difference between the four archetypes.
Next steps: 1. Start to notice these four families of archetypes all around you. These four show up all the time as a unit. In the Wizard of Oz, you have Dorothy the Visionary/Dreamer, Scarecrow the Sage, Tin Man the Caretaker, and the Lion, who should be the Warrior but is operating in his shadow. That's a different story for a different day. You can see these four in the original Sex and the City – with Carrie the Visionary, Miranda the Sage, Charlotte the Caretaker, and Samantha the Warrior. 2. Pay attention to yourself and what is your true native way of being in the world (without the shoulds and expectations). 3. Pay attention when people come to you for help and advice and what they are asking. For example, do they want your help seeing a situation differently, finding words, or creating images to describe something they see? If so, you might be a Visionary. Do they ask for your wise advice and counsel, or do they ask you to fix something or help them plan? If so, you might be a sage? Do they come to you for comfort, guidance, training, and support? Do they need your help connecting better with others? If so, you might be a Caretaker. Do they need your help getting their butt in gear and getting things happening and moving? If so, you might be a Warrior.

Get ready for a powerful conversation about why letting go of the business you think you should have IS THE WAY to the business that is meant for you.
Last week I started my series on Owning Your Strengths, and in my previous episode, I explained why it's such a challenge for consultants and coaches to see, let alone own, their strengths.
I'm super excited to have Roy Bell on my show today as he knows first-hand about these challenges and overcoming them.
When Roy and I started working on his business build and brand several years ago, at the time, it made sense for Roy to leverage his process and system expertise as the foundation of his consulting business. Still, he had a tough time pulling the trigger on this business model. His heart wasn't in it, and he had some personal life issues screaming for his attention.
He and I lost touch for a while until I came across him again on LinkedIn and immediately saw something completely different in Roy. His language, his energy, and his confidence were so different! When we worked together, he was NOT a fan of marketing, and now he was out there doing it. So what changed?
In this episode, you'll hear:
Roy continues to use his process and system engineering mind in a whole new way in his coaching business, and I can't wait for you to hear about it!
Where to dive in: [5:19] Why reactive mode takes away energy from being creative.
[8:00] How Roy applied his process mind to his inner world. Hear what gave him this "Ah-hah" moment.
[13:57] Hear how growing up in the South as a black man shaped how and why he changes microsystems.
[16:24] "Why" questions put people on the defense. Learn how to ask the right questions that lead to exploration and transformation.
[19:45] Hear why Roy thinks we can be the student and the teacher simultaneously in our lives.

Turn the BEST of Your Career into Your Own Business with Lori Smith (Ep 10)
Do you struggle with a fear of being seen and showing up online?
I planned to wrap up my series on "Getting Seen and Paid as an Expert" by sharing best practices around how to position yourself with a potential client who expresses interest in working with you and how to set the right price.
Instead, I realized what I needed to talk about was the challenge that solopreneurs, especially consultants and coaches, face – the fear of being seen!
I never saw how significantly the fear of being seen affected me and my business development until I got into a Thought Leadership mastermind group last year. I found myself in a spin cycle of analysis paralysis, trying to figure out my big breakthrough idea, even though I say the same things repeatedly with my clients and in my work.
I see now that my big idea is the message I've always shared with clients, "The best and ideal business model is the one that is inside of you."
But if you look at the content I have, a small percentage of what I share publicly is this belief in my heart because I was very good at hiding in plain sight.
Like so many of my clients, I have struggled with the fear of being seen. Unfortunately, this fear hinders our ability to show up, put ourselves out there, and make an impact.
I have been talking about getting seen and paid as an expert on the pod, but I neglected to identify the first step in this process - the courage to be seen.

Jared Nichols has always been an independent thinker and never wanted to work for someone else.
I met Jared several years ago when we both worked with a company helping us build our online platform and get our start with creating content.
Initially, I wanted to have Jared on the show because he has done a fantastic job carving out a unique position in the market as a specialized futurist. He has expertise that few consultants possess and creates amazing content, especially videos, that attract his ideal client.
During our conversation, what turned my head was that the root of his content creation and thought leadership-worthy message stems from the idea that the future isn't predicted but created.
You're going to hear about his years moving around as an army brat and how he found solace in music. He never learned to read music, so he created his own. Other people don't like the blank piece of paper, but Jared loved it! A blank slate allowed him to envision something he hadn't seen.
Flash forward to today - his consulting business helps clients create the future and not just respond!
If you got a big vision for your business and your life, but need a jolt of inspiration on how to make it happen, listen in to this powerful interview with Jared.
In this episode, you'll hear:
Where to dive in: [03:49] When did Jared start his first business and why
[10:09] How he became someone that looks at today in the context of the past and the future
[13:55] Jared talks about the early days of building his business as a strategic foresight consultant
[17:35] Why you need to create your intellectual property through focused content
[27:20] How did Jared get clarity on what makes him unique as a futurist
[34:09] Jared shares where his confidence comes from around his ideas and what he wants to do
[37:09] The difference between sought-after-expert and thought leader. How Jared is moving into a thought leadership phase
[48:21] What Jared would tell his younger self who just started a consulting business
Next steps: * Be you! Take time to reflect and trust your gut. Discard what doesn't fit who you are or your business. * Be specific about who you want to work with and focus on character. * Visit my website and book a time with me to clarify your brand position and operate in your unique strengths, just like Jared.

5 Positioning Strategies: Which One is Right for You? (Ep19)
Get Seen as an Expert (Ep18)
Do you want to know the number one strategy I've used to position myself as an expert and get clients to come to me? Come with me back to 2010. It was a couple of years after I left Disney. I got some consulting gigs as a freelancer and decided it was time to commit to my business. So I invested in a partnership with Chad, a web designer/business mentor who had a passion for content and thought leadership. And as the excellent student, I am, I did whatever he told me.
He asked me to create videos for my website and YouTube.
I didn't realize how powerful my content was until I got a call from AAA's HR team in North Carolina. I couldn't believe how effortless the contracting process was and how easy it was to land a six-figure contract with people I had never contacted. But then I found out why. When I got to the office to start our engagement, two of the HR team members greeted me and treated me like a celebrity. They were both in grad school, found my content, quoted me in their research papers, and begged their VP to bring me in.
That's when I knew the power of content.
In this episode, you'll hear:
In this episode, you'll hear:
Where to dive in:
[01:18] Hear how I started positioning myself as an authority and the tangible steps I took.
[04:19] What is content marketing, and what are the benefits?
[07:44] How content marketing influences how people see your ability to deliver results.
[08:30] How to find a content format that aligns with your client's learning style and your content creation style.
[11:30] Expanding to multiple platforms as you get used to content creation.
[12:47] How to know where to start with content creation.
[13:43] Do you want your content to convert?
[17:44] How much free content is too much?
[19:28] Tangible next steps for creating content.
Next steps: 1. Try automatic writing. Get a journal and commit to writing three pages a day about anything. Anything (how your day went, complaining, anything!) as long as you get out those three pages.
If you want to figure out what to write about – start an idea document and fill it with the questions you get asked all the time or ideas that come to you.
If you want to grow your platform – pick one and start. Quantity will lead to quality.

The CURE for Imposter Syndrome (Ep4)
One of the big things on my to-do list this week is finding safe, reliable cars for my daughters, one of whom is leaving for college in a couple of weeks, and the other is graduating. Seriously – what happened to the time?
So I need to figure out what to buy.
I asked around, and I got consistent responses when I said I was looking for safe, reliable, inexpensive cars - Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and Nissan Sentra.
There is a strong link between my problem and the solution (at least my car need, not my empty-nester need).
Everyone mentioning the same safe/reliable/inexpensive cars is the perfect example of powerful brand positioning! As a result, I'm seeking these dealers out; they aren't searching for me.
It's the same thing that happens when there is an association between soft drinks and Coke and Pepsi. Popcorn and movies. Runny noses and Kleenex. Magical family memories and Walt Disney World.
Getting to this kind of perception and outcome is possible for your consulting or coaching business! I know it from my own experience growing my business over the past ten years and helping others do the same.
So today, I'm sharing how I help my clients achieve a strong position and the different ways consultants and coaches can stand out in the crowded consultant and coaching marketplace.
In this episode, you'll hear:
Where to dive in: [2:13] What is brand positioning? How do we create this for ourselves as consultants and coaches? The benefits of finding your positioning.
[5:51] How do you find your position in the market?
[6:38] Popular ways your clients solve problems you should be solving.
[8:13] Five ways consultants and coaches position themselves. Tune in for what might work for you.
[12:39] What is the first step for getting clients to come to you instead of chasing them? Hear the full recap!
[13:33] What can you do right now to improve your positioning?
Next steps: * Everything you do and don't do creates your image: evaluate your website and LinkedIn. Take an objective look at all the potential clients' touch points that inform their impression of you and see what message you're sending. * If you're not sending the message you want and are ready for something more powerful, I want to talk to you. Head on over to www.betsyjordyn.com/schedule to book time with me.

Ready out to stand out and be seen in the market as an expert worth premium fees? Let's do this! Then let's do this. Let's make 2022 the year that you, once and for all give up playing small and marketing small. Instead, own your power and that you're already an expert.
The heart of what I do is help my clients position and language their zone of genius in the market to get seen and paid as the experts.
I had this big-aha during a mastermind I've been leading with clients around setting up marketing systems. I found myself saying, "It's all about positioning." over and over. When we talked about their brand, which marketing system best suited them, and words to use, I said, "it's all about positioning." When we talked about proposal writing and pricing, I jumped up and down and said it was about positioning!!
Your brand isn't a logo or a pithy tagline. It's a promise of value that you make and consistently deliver. But it's not enough to have that promise. You have to take charge of all the ways a client can create an image or impression of you and align that promise.
Where to dive in:
[3:55] The essential step to your brand positioning strategy
[8:01] How to to bridge vision and reality
[9:22] Why your words should reflect your power
[10:57] Why all your marketing touchpoints need to reflect who you are
[14:59] Three steps to be seen as an expert
What's next: 1) Make sure the spotlight of your business is on your ideal client. The easiest way to get out of your head writing-wise is to get into your clients. And if you do this, you'll automatically stand out from the crowd!
2) If you need help elevating your perspective on the value of what you do and your brand image or finding the words to describe your value, head on over to www.betsyjordyn.com/schedule to book time with me.
3) We discussed the big picture about being seen as an expert. In the next episode, I will share with you five positioning strategies consultants and coaches use to stand out in the market. Subscribe or follow in your podcast app so you don't miss it. If you enjoyed this episode and have a colleague who might get value out of it, please share with them.

Do you want to set goals for 2022 that stick?
Entrepreneurs are not always the nicest bosses to themselves. And my theory is that we don't have personal performance standards that are explicit, clear, or what we buy into.
And without those standards, we compare ourselves to others and forget that a big driver for wanting to leave our jobs and start our businesses was to create greater success on our terms.
This episode offers three questions you need to set performance standards that match your total life priorities, work satisfaction, and financial goals.
In this episode you'll hear: * Three questions you need to answer to get the right standards to evaluate this year's performance and set goals for next year * Why your measure of success is unique to your goals and the life you want to create * Why operating in your zone of genius influences your entire business and, ultimately, your life * How going it alone wastes time, energy, and dollars (learn from my mistakes) * Why and how you should shift pricing to match your worth
Where to dive in: [2:42] Are you comparing yourself to others? Are you wondering if you're doing a good job? Then, tune in for what you need to remember.
[4:17] Are you crafting the life you want? Hear the first performance review question you need to answer to make 2022 better than 2021.
[9:01] What are your best-at strengths? Have you prioritized your strengths in your business goals? Hear the second performance standard you need to evaluate yourself against in 2022.
[12:23] Did you meet your financial goals in 2021? I want you to dig deeper into this number for 2022. Hear why past financial goals might not be right in 2022.
Next steps 1. Be clear about your priorities in terms of lifestyle, work/life satisfaction, and finances. Write them down. Refer to them and use them as decision-making filters. 2. Do your year-end review against your standards, no one else's. And be a good boss, okay? Treat yourself like Maya Angelou wants you to do – when you know better, you'll do better. 3. Set goals for next year that put you in the most empowered position. Don't let fear or vanity metrics drive you. Use sober judgment. 4. If you need help – let's talk. Book a call with me at www.betsyjordyn.com/schedule, and let's chat about how I can help you clarify and create greater success on your terms.
If you enjoyed this episode and have a colleague who might get the value out of it, please share it with them. Until next time, thanks for listening.

Get ready for a powerful conversation on the journey from C-Suite executive to C-Suite consultant with my guest Adam Schwartz.
When Adam was unexpectedly laid off from his role as Sr. VP of Communications for Wyndham Vacation Ownership, he knew that more was going on for him than just a career transition. So he didn't blindly accept opportunities for C-level positions in other companies he received. Instead, Adam paused to look inward and find answers to important life questions around who he was and what he wanted.
This sacred crossroads is where he and I started to work on his brand messaging and positioning. And instead of the typical two months, it wound up taking four years - which was precisely the right thing for Adam.
In our highly vulnerable and open conversation, Adam and I talked about:
Not going to lie – it was so powerful that I teared up at the end.
Where to dive in: [5:23] Why would Adam leave the C-Suite to have a coaching business? Hear about how a big shift in the company signaled that the end might be coming and how Adam handled the change.
[8:39] When I heard they gave Adam an outplacement firm, I texted him, "No way! You need to go do your own thing!" Hear why he didn't blow me off and thought there might be a reason not to go after another C-Suite position.
[12:59] Hear the unintended theme that has been coming out of my Getting Started interviews. What is it that truly gets someone to leap into the entrepreneurial journey?
[15:43] Are we fashioning ourselves to what others or a big company want us to be? Tune in for what Adam delivers to his clients and his thoughts on how we shape ourselves.
[18:36] What do you want to be in life? Do you know who you are? Are you comfortable with who you are today? Listen to Adam share about how he felt being unemployed for the first time in his life.
[23:23] How did Adam prevent himself from going down a path that was not right? Can we live an effortless life while providing for ourselves and our families?
[29:12] Hear how Adam let go of his identity as a C-Suite exec and what he found to be the most challenging part of this big shift.
[32:40] How do you balance the critics when you start putting out content versus being an audience of one?
[36:09] Hear Adam's value proposition in light of his journey from C-Suite to C-Suite consultant. You'll hear about his new view of power and how he coaches with this in mind.
[40:00] Tune in to hear how to get ahold of Adam and listen to what he'd tell himself if he could go back in time and talk to himself when he was laid off.
Next steps: * Do the work to know yourself, so you're ready to stand up to criticism. Your opinion is the only one that matters. * Don't jump on opportunities just because they are available. Go slow to go fast and take the time to start a business that is true to you. * Contact someone to support you on your journey from corporate to coaching or consulting. The right person will help you look inward to find the answers.

[29:13] Hear what Lori sees when leaders don't go through the grieving process and the consequences.
[31:45] Hear why working on the right things create results.

If you think you haven't, think again.
And you know what? Your trauma story may feel like it crippled you, but it qualifies you for the consulting and coaching business you're creating.
My guest today is Mary Beth Simon, who is the founder of Niche Partnership Consulting.
Mary Beth and I met last fall when we both participated in Speaking Your Brand's Thought Leadership Academy. She turned my head when she shared the story of a traumatic event from her childhood that wound up protecting her body and her life.
In this episode, Mary Beth and I talk candidly about the challenges of our lives and how those struggles actually turned into strengths.
Key Takeaways:
The advice Mary Beth would give her younger self, "You are stronger than you realize. Everything will work out fine. You need to trust your instincts because they will protect you and lead you in the right direction."
The advice Mary Beth would give herself when she chose to leave corporate, "Where you are going is beyond your wildest dreams. Whatever you think it is going to be, it will be so much better. You are on the right track. Keep going!"
The advice Mary Beth would give people who want to start their dream business but are afraid their past unqualifies them: "How much you disclose it up to you. When you're ready, your power lies in your authenticity. People will welcome you with open arms."
Listen in to discover why your story holds the clues to everything you need for your ideal business. Lean into the business you are meant to create, your life purpose, and the strengths that are your true superpowers.

My initial business build didn’t go exactly the way I wanted. But it was what I needed and now my future clients need from me.
Last week we talked about why some consultants and coaches are able to successful turn their careers into businesses that they love - the elements that they have in common. I’ve gotten great feedback on the episode so go back and listen to it if you haven’t already.
I decided to follow up this episode with more of my story because although I was able to quickly launch a profitable business, it took me years to have the one that feels like me and that I love. You’ll also hear all the powerful ways my partner Jen Hamilton and I are up-leveling our brand and client impact to empower all of us to change the world as consultants and coaches.
Key Takeaways:
Even though I didn’t build the right business the first time, it was the right thing to do. Sometimes something really is better than nothing.
When you’re making a massive career shift, you need a beginner’s mind so you can quickly and with openness acquire the necessary strategies, mindset and tools
Follow your bliss. It takes the same amount of money and time to create an on-purpose business instead of an off-purpose business.
Find alignment between who you are, what makes you happy, and the clients you want to serve.
Stop hiding in plain sight and bring out the chemical core of who you are.
Making money and a difference is not for a lucky few. It's our birthright obligation.
