Failure is the biggest life lesson on how to succeed later.
Will Talks Biz encourages entrepreneurs to push through failure and find success within their own businesses by reflecting on the many failures that lead to the win. It can be assumed that anyone that has navigated life with dyslexia, had a business partner leave with all the funds, and yet continued to build successful businesses and write a book has learned a few lessons that many entrepreneurs could benefit from.
William Manzanares is the student that wanted to become a business owner, did it, and is now sharing how. Will holds nothing back on those low points so others recognize that those are what make the high points better. This show will break down common myths and setbacks in business and give insight into what Will would do based on his experience as well as the experience and expertise of a variety of guests.

After nearly two years of the podcast it is time to talk about making the tough decisions of when to pause or quit in business. The decision to step away from a project or job is rarely an easy one. There are times it just makes sense to quit. In fact, quitting is not always negative. It can be a positive and strategic choice. There are times when setting something aside will create room for high-value tasks and projects. As much reward are the podcast has brought us, it make sense to push pause and redirect attention to things that align with our current vision and goals. As exciting as the change can be, it is also easy to get swayed by outside opinions. Especially when they miss the value of knowing when it’s time to walk away.
As an entrepreneur I have learned the importance of maintaining focus on high-priority tasks and projects. It is important to evaluate when it may be time to close something up, even temporarily, in order to dedicate attention to new opportunities and ventures. Focus on making a business more efficient and customer-centric, rather than blindly expanding for the sake of growth.
Unfortunately, negative perspectives and judgments may arise when making the decision to pause or quit. Those are the times you should seek guidance from trusted mentors and experts, while being mindful of the opinions and feedback received from others. Don’t waste time filtering out distractions that can divert focus from the ultimate business goals and vision. You know why you are making the decision to quit, and that is what matters. Surround yourself with a supportive network that encourages and uplifts you.

How Should Contractors Bill Clients
Setting up billing structures and clearly outlining payment terms in contracts can help avoid confusion or disputes down the line. If you have a business model like mine that relies on retail and speaker fees, take time to learn about different billing methods. As an experienced contractor, Cassie has spent time learning about methods to bills clients, particularly using platforms like Stripe for invoicing. It's not just about getting paid, but how you approach billing that matters.
Asking for upfront payments from clients is not uncommon. However, there are potential challenges associated with it. When contractors asking for significant upfront payments it impacts the trust being built with clients. Business owners should work on striking a balance between addressing financial security concerns and maintaining a client-friendly approach to payments.
Once you set up your system, communication is a key aspect of billing and client interactions. Maintain open and transparent communication throughout the billing process, especially when following up on late payments. Over-communicating about payment structures and potential late fees is a way to ensure clarity. When the inevitable late payment happens, try to approach them with grace and understanding.
We cannot stress enough the significance of transparency, communication, and understanding in the contractor-client billing relationship. Make sure to listen to the full episode for more on navigating the nuances of billing clients effectively.

How to Appropriately Brag About Your Success
Success is about more than just bragging. Talking about success is important in business, but you should also be aware of its impact on marketing and brand perception. There are a number of unanticipated pitfalls of using braggadocious content for recruiting employees and attracting customers. It's not just ineffective, it can backfire big time.
Success talk can attract the wrong crowd, including the type of people you attract as potential employees. When I was using braggish content to recruit employees it led to some unexpected results. It's not about how long you've been in business, but how you've helped consumers and the value you offer. Focus on tangible impact, not just numbers and years in the game.
Shift the focus to storytelling that puts the customer's needs front and center. Highlight how you've added value, solve problems, and foster long-term relationships. That's the real currency. Bragging as a sales tactic can lead to imposter syndrome and consumer distress. Not a good look for entrepreneurs or personal brands. It's time to rethink how we share success and maintain authenticity in our messaging.
Stop the cycle of bragging and start emphasizing real impact and solutions. Let the success stories and customer testimonials do the talking. It's all about building trust and genuine connections in the world of business. The personal brand of an entrepreneur is crucial, and it's important not to come across as overly boastful. Consumers are seeking genuine connections and value, not grandstanding.
Keeping the focus on serving customers and employees, rather than flaunting financial success, fosters a healthy and authentic business environment. Consider reframing your messaging from bragging about your success to discussing the concrete ways you've helped your customers. Stay humble in the content, shifting the focus from personal success to providing value. Keep your intentions in the right place.
Remember, it's all about showcasing how you serve and provide solutions to your customers, not about flaunting your own achievements. Make sure to listen to this full episode for more on how to talk about success without coming off as braggadocious.

A Discussion on MLMs
If a business opportunity seems too good to be true, there’s a chance it is. Multilevel marketing (MLM) companies are one of the business opportunities that are often questioned. My firsthand experience with MLMs has really opened my eyes to the pitfalls and success that can come when you follow the allure of quick money.
There are several things to keep in mind if you are worried about falling into an MLM trap. Make sure you understand where your income comes from. The openness around those questions will help you get a glimpse into the values and ethics of the brand. Still unsure if something is legit or not? Seek feedback from seasoned business owners. That’s not all though. There are several other key takeaways from this conversation:
This episode is a must listen if you've ever been approached with a similar business opportunity and are looking for advice or insights from experienced business professionals. Whether you're considering an MLM opportunity or navigating the world of entrepreneurship, it's essential to approach with critical thinking, diligence in research, and a genuine desire to make a positive impact.

Will Spent $2,500 on What?!
It is not uncommon to encounter challenges with a contractor during a personal building project. However, a recent situation dealing with a difficult contractor left me facing some unanticipated ethical challenges.
After a less than favorable experience I was offered $2,500 to remove negative online reviews of a contracting company. This exchange was not only surprising but also raised ethical and legal questions about handling negative feedback.
Transparency in business culture is key. How a company handles challenges reflects its values. An ethical approach to customer feedback can elevate the reputation of any business. The offer of compensation for altering reviews is not just unethical, it's an indication of the company's underlying culture. Consumer trust is built on honest interaction and integrity.
Culture and leadership directly impact how a business interacts with customers. By prioritizing ethical conduct, companies can foster trust and loyalty, instead of resorting to short-term "solutions". In the world of business, the way a company responds to criticism speaks volumes. While it's acceptable to have flaws, it's how we address and learn from them that truly defines our character.
Make sure to listen to this episode to better understand the complexities of customer-business interactions and the evolving landscape of customer feedback in the digital age. There is a lot ot learn from experiences like this. As business owners, consider the impact of online reviews and how you respond to them. Prioritize engaging in thoughtful and ethical customer-business interactions, and to approach online reviews and feedback with integrity. By doing so, we can contribute to a culture of transparency, trust, and ethical business practices.

Standing Out as an Entry Level Candidate
There are a number of ways to stand out as an entry-level candidate in today's competitive job market. Many people think hiring decisions are all about qualifications. In reality, it is also about attitude, initiative, and dedication. Never underestimate the importance of making personal connections, researching the company you're applying to, and demonstrating flexibility as an entry-level candidate.
Make a personal connection by going beyond a generic application submission. Reach out directly to hiring managers or business owners. It is a fairly easy way to stand out from the sea of applicants. This personal touch can make a lasting impression and set you apart in the hiring process.
Once you get that call for an interview spend time researching the organization. Before an interview, make sure to learn about the position, the company, and its offerings. Demonstrate your knowledge by asking thoughtful questions about the role and the organization. This shows your genuine interest in the opportunity.
Be prepared with ways to show willingness to learn and be flexible. Whether through volunteer work, running programs, or other community involvement, showcase your dedication to personal and professional growth. Displaying a proactive and adaptable attitude will make you an attractive candidate for potential employers.

Monitoring your Competition As a leader it is important to be aware of your competition and the impact they may have on your business strategies. Competition in the theme park industry is a great example of the impact of direct rivals, customer loyalty, and market dominance. Monitoring your competition is vital, but the magic lies in understanding how to then make your own business stand out and cater to the needs of your consumers.
Whether you operate in the theme park industry or in a completely different sector, you have to know your competition. Understanding who else is out here is what will help make sure you are staying ahead. Identify their strengths and weaknesses to capitalize on opportunities for improvement in your own business.
Make sure to strike a balance between learning from your competition and staying true to your business identity. Pay attention to the market and customer needs without fixating solely on your rivals. Staying in tune with your customers will help you provide them with the best possible experience.
Don’t let your curiosity cause you to lose focus on customer service. Exceptional customer service remains a key differentiator among competitors. Providing efficient service and creating a friendly atmosphere can contribute to customer loyalty. That is what will ultimately set you apart from competitors, enhancing your business's overall success.

Content Experts
The best way to grow as a content expert is by adding value in presentations and seeking feedback from those you serve. After recent experiences at conferences, Cassie and I both shared disappointment by not receiving the expected value from certain presentations. Part of the problem was a lack of speakers presenting in a way that offers genuine value and connects with their audience in a meaningful way.
As a business owner it is important to constantly be seeking and valuing feedback from others. Whether it’s asking for constructive criticism from an audience after a presentation or actively listening to customer feedback in business. Always stay open to learning and growing. Relatability, trust, and storytelling go a long way when connecting with others. People can tell when you have genuine intentions. Don’t set yourself up to a negative reputation by falling short in delivering it.
Build a reputation as an expert by sharing authentic experiences and by offering genuine value. When things don’t go well, embrace the lessons from failures and use them to foster growth in business. All of your experiences can help in delivering better presentations, improving customer service, and creating more excellent overall experiences for those they serve.
Make sure to listen to this episode for more on how to bring positive impact as a content expert. Remember, learning from mistakes and striving for improvement is the key to success in business.

Shiny Object Syndrome in Entrepreneurship
The evolving perceptions of success can become a slippery slope for entrepreneurs. While continuous learning is important, it can also lead to shiny object syndrome. By having a clear definition of success you are less likey to fall into the trap that comes with critiques and comparison. Staying committed to your vision will help limit the shiny objects that tend to distract entrepreneurs from their goals.
Make sure to value personal growth as a measure of success. In fact, personal growth really has been my ultimate measure of success in entrepreneurship. Over time my perception of success has changed. Success is about personal development and learning from past mistakes. Never forget the importance of learning from mistakes and growing personally.
A big pitfall, or shiny object, in entrepreneurship is around the growth of a business. There is a common notion that the number of employees is a significant indicator of business success. This is incredibly shortsighted. Instead of focusing solely on the size of a team focus on customer impact and profitability. The importance of serving customers and being able to solve their needs is a great measure of business success.
Comparing yourself to others can lead to distractions and self-doubt. Instead, set clear goals for yourself and your business. Focus on achieving these goals through well-defined systems, ultimately leading to a sense of fulfillment and achievement. Make sure to listen to the full episode for more on not letting imposter syndrome and comparisons distract you from your vision of success.

How to Navigate Customer Complaints and Negative Reviews
Customer feedback is an important part of business growth. Especially when a customer has a frustrating experience. Instead of ignoring an issue and hoping it will go away, it's best to face them. Those moments give you an opportunity to learn valuable lessons that can help you improve the customer experience.
Turn a negative review into a positive outcome by actively listening and taking the necessary steps to address the issues raised. This starts with by creating a culture that prioritizes customer service. Businesses can stand out by providing exceptional customer service and handling challenges with transparency and empathy.
When negative rewivews come through approach them with humility. It's crucial for businesses to address negative feedback promptly and sincerely. The aim is to resolve issues and learn from the customer's perspective.
Ultimately, create a culture of customer advocacy. Companies should nurture a culture where all employees actively listen to and address customer concerns. Everyone should be striving to enhance the customer experience.

How to Get Your Products In Front of People
In-person engagement and adaptability are crucial for brands to thrive. I was reminded of this while visiting holiday festivals where the ability to swiftly change booth setups based on customer flow and engagement led to increased sales. Entrepreneurs should never dismiss the significance of being flexible and continuously seeking ways to improve the customer experience.
When initially building a customer base don’t underestimate the value of in-person, tangible experiences. Whether it’s allowing people to get their hands on products or meeting the face behind the brand, these interactions create enriched connections that digital marketing may not fully capture. The blend of marketing efforts and tangible experiences lays a strong foundation for long-term customer relationships.
Take your product to local markets and test it. It’s hard to be any more clear than that. Direct feedback from customers provides insights for improvement and even the creation of new offerings. This hands-on approach helps in gauging the market’s response and guides effective decision-making for future product iterations. By having direct involvement with consumers, it paves the way for adapting to their preferences and needs. The key for entrepreneurs is to build a business that is customer-centric and open to feedback. It directly contributes to growth and product development.
When participating in in-person events, setting clear goals is essential. Selling out or engaging potential clients are just a couple of examples. Each event becomes an opportunity to learn, grow, and define success uniquely. Goal setting before each event ensures that every engagement is a steppingstone towards business growth and development.
Make sure to listen to this episode for a wealth of insights into the power of in-person engagement and adaptability for local brands. Our conversation serves as a reminder that being open to change, consistently engaging with customers, and setting clear goals are essential elements for business success.

How to Become Your Own Boss
Every entrepreneurial journey begins with taking the first step. Yet, as exciting as it is, there are a lot of mixed emotions that come along it. It’s a mix of euphoria and dread that comes with being your own boss. Much of that stemming from the realization that you are the one responsible for solving problems and making decisions. Ultimately, the definition of becoming your own boss varies for everyone, so make sure to acknowledge the milestone moments that mark the start of your entrepreneurial journey.
An essential hallmark of establishing a business is the influx of revenue. That is often best seen by having tangible financial transactions. It serves as evidence of a viable business. In order to keep that momentum it is important to keep tabs on customer satisfaction. The presence of paying customers indicates a major shift from ideation to action. But that's just the beginning - it's what you do with that money that determines your success.
The steps to getting started may seem daunting. Break the process down into a few practical steps. Get a website & company name secured, form an LLC, and set up a business account. Then comes the best part; start selling your product or service. Make sure you also protect yourself and your business by legally covering your entity. Avoid personal guarantees and separate your personal assets. It's all about treating your venture like a business from the get-go.
A common fear among prospective entrepreneurs is the 'What If' mindset. It’s important to shift that focus from the negative 'What Ifs' to the positive potential of success. Confront your fears and embrace the potential for success. Often, the fear of failure can be paralyzing, preventing individuals from pursuing their dreams. Embrace the journey, stay positive, and ask yourself, "Why not take the leap?"
Make sure to listen to the full episode for more on navigating the world of entrepreneurship and taking the leap to become your own boss. This may be the episode that helps you push through challenges and find success within your own business journey.

Being Your Own Boss
Being your own boss offers great reward and challenges. One of the most important parts of the entrepreneurship journey is pushing through failure and finding success. That is not always easy though. The things that make my experience being my own boss worth it are the opportunity to impact young professionals, create a positive work environment, and pursue childhood dreams.
Starting a business and being your own boss comes with its fair share of challenges. There is a big need for resilience when confronted with obstacles. You will not always have the answers so seek guidance from those who understand the intricacies of entrepreneurship. There is a lot of value in the lessons from those who have navigated similar paths. This resilience is important not only in overcoming challenges but also in continuously steering the business toward success.
One day to build that resilience is gaining a deep understanding your purpose or 'why' in entrepreneurship. Your "why" can keep you going through the toughest times in entrepreneurship. Over time it is very likely that your ‘why’ will evolve and that is okay. Just remember to hold on to your compelling reason that fuels the passion for your business.
Having a clear purpose will be crucial when you face toxic mindsets and negative influences. It happens to everyone at some point. Lean into supportive networks and mentorship to help you stay focused on your mission. Their positive guidance is invaluable to entrepreneurial growth. Remember though, inspiration can come from various resources. Find books, podcasts, and interviews with successful entrepreneurs, as a means of gaining motivation and guidance. When you do this you surround yourself with positivity and valuable insights that propel your business forward.
The freedom, flexibility, and opportunities that entrepreneurship presents is an undeniable reward. It is nice having the autonomy to pursue interests for personal growth, education, and self-improvement. Too many businesses forget the transformative effect of training and development. Taking the time for personal growth is what will shape your entrepreneurial leadership and the overall success of a business. As you navigate your own path in business, remember to embrace your "why", seek guidance from those who understand your journey, and find inspiration in the stories of successful entrepreneurs. Keep pushing through the challenges and celebrate the rewards of being your own boss.
Make sure to listen to this episode for an open conversation about overcoming setbacks, staying resilient, and the rewards of charting your own path by being your own boss.

Preparing for the End of the Year
The end of the year can bring about a number of the challenges and opportunities entrepreneurs face at the end of the year. There is a unique balance between embracing the festivities and tying up loose ends for our businesses. Use the time you have to consider these three ways to set yourself up for success going into the new year.
Reflect and Plan: As the year comes to a close, entrepreneurs need reflect on their business' overall performance. Analyzing year-end sales and comparing them to previous years can provide valuable insights. Additionally, setting clear goals and establishing a plan for the upcoming year is crucial for continued success.
Strategize Cost Management: During slower times focus on cost-cutting strategies. Analyzing expenses and identifying areas for potential savings can significantly impact profitability. Making informed decisions about necessary investments and operational infrastructure is crucial for sustainable growth.
Outsource for Efficiency: Outsourcing non-core tasks, such as bookkeeping and tax preparation, can save time and provide peace of mind. Recognizing the value of investing back into the business, and leveraging expertise where needed, can lead to substantial benefits in the long run.
Keep an eye out for our upcoming episode where we'll dive into why Cassie Tucker transitioned her business from an LLC to an S Corp. The Power of Vulnerability When Storytelling
Have you ever doubted the impact of your own story? Believe it or not, by leading with authenticity and vulnerability you have the power to change lives. The most captivating speakers tell impactful stories that connect with the audience, build credibility, and make a lasting impression. This was once again evident during a recent opportunity speaking to a group of 4th graders.
There is a distinct joy that comes from connecting with young minds and sharing relatable stories with them. Their genuine interest and raw questions leave a lasting impression. By sharing my story with young individuals I was able to give them firsthand experience on the value of embracing their unique learning styles and sharing their challenges openly.
The time with them was a great reminder of the importance of relatability and storytelling, which transcends age and audience. My advice to aspiring speakers is simple. Practice, seek feedback, and be humble. The journey of sharing your story begins with a genuine desire to make a difference.
Everyone has a story worth sharing. When you focus on giving back, providing value, and reaching out to diverse audiences, people will see and feel your commitment to making a positive impact. By writing my own book, "I Can't Read," others have started to understand and embrace different learning styles.
Whether you're an aspiring speaker or someone navigating your own challenges , take a page from my book and embrace the uniqueness of your story. Remember that your journey could inspire others in ways you never imagined. Your voice matters. Share it.

Being an Accessible Leader
It is such an honor to talk with a very special guest, Lee Cockerell, the former Executive Vice President of Walt Disney World, to discuss the importance of being an accessible leader. Lee shares valuable insights on fostering strong connections and building trust, from engaging with employees and guests to embracing virtual accessibility. His wealth of experience emphasizes the power of accessibility in leadership
Lee emphasizes the significance of making oneself accessible to employees, customers, and colleagues. Be accessible and tell everyone you are. Most people don't take advantage of it, so you will not get bothered as much as you think you would. Lee has openly shared his contact information throughout his career. His accessibility leads to genuine connections, and ultimately to valuable opportunities and relationships.
When you're accessible, you'll learn things that you may not want to learn, but it's crucial for understanding what's really happening in your business or organization. For example, during his time at Disney Lee learned the pivotal role of accessibility in understanding the reality of business operations, and how it reflects on the guest experience.
Accessibility is not limited to physical presence. In today's virtual world, technology like Zoom and regular phone calls can help maintain accessibility and connection with teams and customers. There are many ways to maintain accessibility and connection in a virtual work environment. No matter which way you choose, just remember the importance of staying in touch with employees and customers through varied communication channels.
Lee's commitment to creating positive change and empowering individuals from all walks of life is reflected in his book and courses on the Cockerell Academy. His newest course, "Frontline," will bring essential knowledge for success, particularly aimed at frontline employees and aspiring professionals. Check out Lee Cockerell's offerings, including upcoming courses, books, newsletter, and insights on leadership and customer service by visiting his website, leecockerell.com.

With the right approach you can turn any hobby or idea into a booming business. This was the case with my honey business. After exploring beekeeping with a friend, I fell in love with the calming experience of being with bees. Honey is the natural outcome of beekeeping, so I decided to create a brand around it. During this episode we talk about to take a unique brand idea and build a business out of it, much I have done.

Mental Health in Business
An often overlooked, yet critical topic, is mental health in entrepreneurship. It’s time for more people to break the stigma and have open conversations about the challenges we face as entrepreneurs and how to overcome them. Cassie and I discuss the importance of seeking professional help, surrounding yourself with positivity, and making positive changes in your environment. It is incredibly important to maintain a healthy balance and find support from others who have been through similar struggles. You don’t have to face it alone.
Don't hesitate to seek help from professionals and those who have gone through similar experiences. You're not alone in this journey, and reaching out for support can make a world of difference. Surrounding yourself with positive people and environments can help lift your spirits during challenging times. Choose a network that supports your growth and wellbeing.
When you notice negative patterns or feelings of depression and anxiety, take the time to reflect on what may have triggered them. Make positive changes in your life, whether it's through hobbies, exercise, or setting boundaries in relationships and work. Stepping outside, enjoying nature, and engaging in activities we love can be incredibly rejuvenating and help alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Remember, success is not just about finances and accolades. It's about finding balance and fulfillment in all areas of life. Prioritize your mental health and well-being alongside your business goals. Mental health challenges are common. There are resources and communities available to help you through any struggles you may be facing as an entrepreneur.

Frustrating customer service experiences are great reminders of the importance of delivering exceptional service. Recently I had a less than favorable interaction at a store while trying to buy paint. It felt like I was battling with the employee to get what I needed. In that moment, I remembered the rule: "Never argue with the customer."
Arguing only escalates the situation and creates animosity between the customer and the business. It's crucial to find a solution and make the customer feel heard and valued. Instead of saying "no," find a way to say "yes" or offer alternatives.
While I eventually managed to get my paint, it was not without a lot of frustration and wasted time. And you know what I did? I gave the employee a copy of the customer rules. I hope it helps them understand the importance of exceptional service and learning from mistakes.
This experience taught me a valuable lesson: exceptional customer service can make or break a business. It's not just about the product or service; it's about how you make your customers feel. Treat them with respect, listen to their needs, and find ways to exceed their expectations.
The next time you encounter a frustrating customer service experience, remember the power of exceptional service. Be the business that stands out, that makes customers feel valued and appreciated. It's not just good for your customers; it's good for your business too.
"Passion will trump any mistakes they may see you make."

Ask Will Building Your Speaking Expertise
Anyone interested in public speaking needs to understand effective speaking strategies, including engaging the audience throughout the presentation. During this conversation, Cassie discusses her upcoming presentation and seeks guidance on boosting her confidence, honing her presentation skills, and engaging an audience.
The best way to battle nerves before getting on stage is to practice, practice, practice! The more you rehearse your speech, the more confident and fearless you'll become. Practice makes permanent, not perfect. Recording, reviewing, and refining your speeches is essential to eliminate filler words and enhance your storytelling skills.
A key to keeping your audience engaged is by embracing the power of storytelling. You can also actively engage the audience through thought-provoking questions and feedback requests. Ask questions, share relatable stories, and leave them wanting more. Remember, passion trumps any imperfections!
Once you wrap up your time on stage it's important to shift to post-presentation networking. Leave your contact information and encourage further connections. Aim to strike a balance between leaving them wanting more and overstaying your welcome. Leaving a positive impact can easily be done through effective follow-up.
Make sure to listen to this episode for more details around combatting nervousness, addressing filler words, ensuring engaging content, and effective follow-up strategies for speaking engagements.

The Power of Now
“"Plan for it, but don’t worry about every possible outcome. You’ll spend more time worrying about every possible thing that could go wrong than just focusing on what you have to do to make it go right."
There is a book that has been making waves among successful CEOs and Fortune 500 companies: "The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle. I recently reread the book, which focuses on the concept of living in the present moment. Too often we find ourselves dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. This mindset can lead to limiting beliefs, anxiety, and depression. In reality, at this exact moment, there is nothing wrong – and it's a powerful realization.
The power comes when you focus on the present, rather than being consumed by future goals and past mistakes. Cassie and I discuss how embracing the now can free us from the anxieties and stresses of things we can't control. By being fully present, we can find peace, clarity, and fulfillment in our lives and businesses.
Lifef is fleeting, and it's essential to make the most of the current moment. Setting goals and planning for the future is important, but not at the expense of neglecting the present. If you haven't yet read "The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle, we highly recommend giving it a go. It's a powerful tool to help you shift your mindset and find greater peace and productivity in your entrepreneurial journey.
Make sure to listen to the full episode to gain a deeper understanding of how living in the present moment can positively impact your business. Shed unnecessary worries and anxieties, focus on what's within our control, and embrace the power of the present moment in our business journeys.

Trying to land a job can feel like an endless hunt with no success. Tim Dyck, owner of Best Culture Solutions, helps people find clarity as an employer or as a job seeker. He shares his expert insights on how to navigate the competitive job market and stand out from the crowd. This conversation is full of best practices for landing a job.
One of the key topics we discuss is around giving feedback. It may seem surprising, but feedback can boost your reputation and increase your chances of landing a job. Offering candid and constructive feedback can set you apart from the competition. As Tim points out, investing in feedback, you will strengthen relationships and create opportunities for growth. Don't hesitate to ask for feedback during your interview to show your commitment to growth and improvement.
Along similar lines, employers and recruiters must be upfront and transparent with job applicants. By providing clear expectations about the hiring process and how to succeed, you create a positive candidate experience. Amazon's proactive approach of emailing candidates beforehand to introduce their interviewer is a fantastic example. Tim recommends the book "Motivational Based Interviewing" by Carol Quinn for anyone conducting interviews. He says that it serves as a guide for job seekers to understand how interviewers identify the desired mindset in candidates.

"Set up clear expectations and standards when a panel is scoring. It makes it fair and consistent for each candidate. At the end of the interviews, you have numbers, and the numbers don't lie." - Autumn Stern
There is no doubt that setting up hiring strategies can make a difference for your organization. In an effort to better understand strategies that work, I talked it Autumn Stern, a senior HR analyst and former Disney cast member. She has an extensive expertise in HR, focusing on hiring and retention practices.
Throughout our conversation she highlights some of the most common mistakes leaders make in their hiring strategies and how to avoid them. From overlooking "overqualified" candidates to being hesitant about hiring recent college graduates, her advice is practicle and easy to take action on. There were three big takeaways that are important for everyone to hear.
First, don't be afraid of "overqualified" applicants. Autumn made a great point that if someone is deemed "overqualified," it means they have the most relevant experience and could be the best fit for the position. Don't dismiss them, give them a chance!
Next, embrace college graduates for entry-level positions. Contrary to popular belief, college graduates are eager, motivated, and ready to prove themselves in their first job. They bring fresh ideas and a willingness to learn. Give them an equal opportunity to interview and show what they can bring to the table.
And finally, focus on job requirements, not personality. Hiring based solely on personality or a perceived fit within the team is not a fair practice. Instead, focus on finding the best candidate for the job based on their skills, qualifications, and experience. A cohesive team is a result of each team member excelling in their respective positions.
Whether you're a business owner, manager, or simply curious about effective hiring strategies, this episode is a must-listen. Autumn's insights provide valuable guidance for hiring success in your organization. Remember, diversity, embracing "overqualified" candidates, and setting fair assessment methods will lead to stronger teams and future growth.

It's important to remember to step back and celebrate those milestones and those small winds. And because I think that's kind of fuel to keep moving forward.
There is one topic that I believe is crucial for personal and professional growth - the importance of sharing your story. Too many leaders underestimate the significance of opening up. Sharing our experiences can make a positive impact on others. That is why Cassie and I felt it was important to dig deeper into the importance of sharing your story.
Many entrepreneurs a similar desire to solve problems and make the world a better place. They set out with the best intentions, then along the way something happens that catches them off guard. Have you ever had a moment like that where you think, “why did no one tell me that?” Throughout my journey I have had to face a number of failures and navigate unanticipated challenges. That is why as an entrepreneur I made the promise that I would use those experiences to help others.
By sharing your true and genuine experiences, you offer others a meaningful and relatable perspective. Any time you share you experiences and insights it is important to recognize the power of authenticity in storytelling. Authenticity creates a deeper connection with your audience, whether it's through a podcast, book, blog, or any other medium you choose.
Roadblocks and doubts often arise when we consider sharing our stories. It may be questions about how to get started or concerns about lacking resources. Personal challenges, like my dyslexia, can also create obstacles. But these roadblocks should not deter you from moving forward. Instead, embrace them as opportunities for growth and learning.
My journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and determination. Despite the challenges, I found ways to overcome them and hone in on my public speaking skills. A lot of that is was possible because I acknowledge the value of focusing on self-improvement and constantly working on one's craft. This is just like the best athletes and performers do.
Be careful as you navigate the inevitable comparison trap in today's society. Social media often showcases only the highlight reels of success. Behind every success story, there are countless failures and setbacks. By acknowledging this reality, we can free ourselves from the pressure of comparison and focus on our own unique journeys. Your experiences have the power to inspire, educate, and motivate others. Your authentic voice can touch someone's life and make a lasting impact.
Take the time to reflect on your own journey and consider the ways in which you can share your story. Whether it's through writing, speaking engagements, or any other creative outlet, remember that your story matters and can make a difference.

We all have those moments in life where we think, "why didn't I see that coming?" I found myself in one of those after a partnership I invested in went south faster than a snowball in summer. It was a publishing company that seemed to have it all. They had the right words, the right promises, seemingly successful track record, and ultimately they had my trust.
Unfortunately, as happens to many entrepreneurs, things didn't go as planned. One day, out of the blue, they sent out an email, a goodbye letter of sorts, saying they ran out of money. Just like that, the dream was over. They had taken my money, along with many others, and couldn't deliver what they had promised.
It was a big blow, no doubt, but it taught me something invaluable. It made me realize the importance of doing thorough research and due diligence before jumping headfirst into any business partnership or investment. I learned the hard way, but it's a lesson that's been etched in my heart ever since. Mistakes, they say, are the best teachers. And boy, did I learn a harsh lesson.
Experiences like this are disheartening, but also make us wiser. Take a listen to this episode to hear how stay cautious and ways to dig deeper before making a commitment.

Don't let the fear of what hasn't even happened stop you from trying. Bad months will come, but when you have employees, you pay them first. You're the paid last. - Micah Tucker
Micah Tucker, owner of Florida Coast Canine, joins for a discussion on strategies for business growth and confidently making your first hire. He has taken his passion for dog training and turned it into a thriving business. During our conversation, he shares that as Florida Coast Canine takes off he worries that clients may go elsewhere if they can't get an appointment right away.
The possibility of losing clients due to an overwhelming workload is an unfortunately reality many entrepreneurs face. Instead of shying away from the challenge, Micah recognized that it was time to make a critical decision. We dive into a great discussion on when business owners need to shift from seeking solutions to hiring and expanding their team.
Hiring that first employee can be intimidating. The entire process comes with its own set of challenges. However, Micah knew that he needed to amp up his game if he wanted his business to grow. The first thing to do is hire someone to help with the workload. No matter what your business is, consider the specific role this person would fulfill. Then you will be ready to find employees who are eager to learn and have an ownership mindset.
Hiring an employee not only helps business owners manage their workload better, it also allows them to expand their reach. In Micah's case, it allows him the opportunity to solidify his place in the dog training industry. He learned to find the balance between high-demand periods and slow months, and how to effectively market his business.
Business owners need to learn to trust their judgment. The decisions they make are what will shape the future of their business. Throughout this episode, Micah's story serves as a reminder of the importance of stepping out of one's comfort zone in the pursuit of business growth and success.

There are many people that wonder if their entrepreneurship experience is beneficial for corporations. Recently Cassie decided to apply for a job in a local company after being out of the corporate world for almost four years. She notice a lack of callbacks and interviews despite years of growth. This raises the question of whether entrepreneurship experience is valued in corporate settings.
Years ago I leveraged my entrepreneurial skills to secure a job. After a while I came to realize that my outside-the-box thinking and willingness to challenge the status quo were not appreciated in the corporate environment. There became a clear clash between the entrepreneurial mindset and the expectations of a traditional corporate structure.
Entrepreneurs need to carefully consider their reasons for wanting to return to the corporate world. Paying off debts or leveraging a job to support the financial stability of their business might be valid reasons. However, be cautious against going back out of fear or a desire to please others.
On the flip side, entrepreneurship requires a certain mindset and drive. If you are not able to see past the challenges that rise as an entrepreneur, then it may not be the right path. Take the time to refine traits before reentering the entrepreneurship space.
If you decide that you are interested in a corporate role for the right reasons then make sure you are tailoring a resume to the job being applied for. Focus on skill sets, not necessarily mentioning ownership of a previous business unless specifically asked.
While you may have done some pretty amazing things, make sure you don't end up bragging during an interview. Instead, focus on what has been accomplished and how it benefited the company. Make sure you showcase your ability to adapt and not stuck in the past.
If you've been considering re-entering corporate positions, that the time to reflect on your initial reasons for starting a business. Ask what has happened to cause motivation to wane. Entrepreneurs need to embrace change and learn from others' mistakes.

Education isn't just about a degree. You don't need a piece of paper to be successful. Be a lifelong learner, ask questions, listen to podcasts, attend seminars, and be intentional about learning. - Will Manzaneras
The way business is always changing and evolving is why it is so important to continuously learn. This can be done in a number of ways. However, during this conversation, Cassie and I dive into the value of podcasts and practical experience alongside formal education. Students need to proactively seek opportunities to work or volunteer with businesses so they can learn from professionals.
Today's students are more eager to learn and ask insightful questions. This really has set them apart from previous generations. The relevance of formal education in today's business world has also changes. A degree alone doesn't guarantee success and young professionals are proving it. Practical experience and a mindset of entrepreneurship are just as important.
I've seen firsthand how podcasts can help entrepreneurs and business students alike. In fact, we are celebrating the podcast's recognition as a top 20 best podcast for students. This honor validates our mission to help business students of all ages.
If you're a business student or an aspiring entrepreneur, this episode is a must-listen. It's loaded with tips and resources. The conversation offers valuable insights and practical advice to help you navigate the evolving business landscape and achieve success.

There are several challenges within business ownership that tend to weigh on peoples minds, yet are not talked about enough. One that Cassie and I felt drawn to discuss is the importance of being aware of and avoiding business scams.
Recently I encountered a couple of companies that folded abruptly, leaving myself and others high and dry. There were plenty of prepaid invoices and yet no product or service to show for it. The sting is still a bit fresh, but I saw an opportunity to turn this painful experience into a lesson - not just for me, but for all entrepreneurs out there. In sharing my experience, I hope to shield fellow entrepreneurs from the pain of falling into the same trap.

"Success is relative. What matters is how you define it and the impact you make on others."
Picture this: You're a young entrepreneur, and you've just hit your first big milestone. The joy is palpable. You want to shout it from the rooftops, you want everyone to know about your success. But then, you pause. You remember the importance of staying grounded. I remember when I was in your shoes, feeling that rush of excitement, the temptation to brag was strong. But I learned, sometimes the hard way, that humility is key. It wasn't an easy lesson. I had to face my fair share of failures and criticism, but it made me stronger, more resilient. So, as you celebrate your success, remember, it's your journey, your goals. Stay humble, stay gracious and keep your eyes on the path ahead.
In this episode I dive into the importance of humility in the face of success. Throughout the years I've learned the pitfalls of arrogance and the need to remain grounded and humble. Success is relative. It is crucial for entrepreneurs to avoid bragging about their achievements because it can attract competition and potentially harmful individuals seeking to take advantage.
Listen to this episode to:
Prioritize problem-solving and lifting others up, rather than solely focusing on financial gain. There are many reasons that it is important to maintain privacy when it comes to financial successes. Be cautious about sharing too much information with friends and family. In fact, really think about your motivations behind sharing success with others. I often ask entrepreneurs their intentions when sharing. Is it to benefit others or solely to feed their ego?

My introduction to the world of real estate came from an insatiable curiosity that led me to read numerous books on the subject. I initially thought about experimenting with single-family rentals. However, as I continued to research I chose not to pursue Airbnb due to the challenges it presented. Despite the appealing claims made by Airbnb enthusiasts, I realized that it was a separate business in itself. There is a strong emphasis on attention to detail, especially in terms of cleanliness. As I continued to investigate real estate, I learned the value of owning the land where his businesses resided.

This is a conversation that will give more people an awareness of the comforts and risks that come with entrepreneurship, while staying true to their goals and aspirations. Cassie and I welcome back previous guest, Katie Currens. She is offering updates on how their business has evolved since she joined for an episode of "Ask Will", while also coming with a new batch of curiosities.
Katie is a former classroom teacher that moved into consulting and business development before taking the leap into entrepreneurship. She is now dedicated to helping others uncover their purpose in life through the magic of unlearning. Her business, One Spark Solutions, offers creative design and development for organizations looking to better align their people with their purpose. Throughout our conversation it is clear that she has a passion for education and a knack for guiding people towards self-discovery, while still open to seeking guidance on her own personal and professional growth.
The questions she asks today are moments that every entrepreneur has faced. There will come a time when you face the difficulty in choosing between a traditional job and doubling down on your business, especially as a substantial contract comes to an end. Going back to a traditional job after being an entrepreneur was not a favorable experience for me. This is one of those times you have to weigh what it means to you, which could include the decision to take a part-time job or double down on the business. Know the importance of balancing comfort and risk-taking in entrepreneurship.
Learning the value of your offer and charging for your expertise is a huge issue that many of of face. Remember that people pay for what they value. With that, don't forget the importance of valuing yourself and charging what you're worth, while also recognizing that not everyone will pay for it. Stay focused on delivering quality services to your clients.

Throughout our conversation Katie and I discuss why it is important to set boundaries between personal and professional life. Part of why I started this podcast was because I learned there are common struggles we face, much like the questions Katie asks. "Just start asking. When you ask other business owners for advice, they generally give it."
Cassie just spent several days alongside Lee Cockerell and attendees of his "Creating Magic Mastermind" event. Her experience inspired a conversation about the importance of mentorship and community for entrepreneurs. During the event entrepreneurs from different industries present their business challenges to find solutions. The value them comes in the guidance from individuals with unique experiences and cultivates mentorship relationships.
We often underestimate the need for a support system to navigate the ups and downs of running a business. Part of being a leader means knowing when to seek advice and insights from experienced entrepreneurs and build relationships and communities to succeed in the business landscape. That has always been a goal with this podcast as well.
In this episode, we discuss how to:
Much like events like Lee Cockerell's Creating Magic Mastermind, successful business leaders should make a commitment to paying it forward. Use the lessons you learn to make a profound difference in the lives of others. Curious how these events can impact you? Listen and find out.

"Don't let others define what you should be doing."
Growing up, I always knew I wanted to be a business owner. As an ambitious youngster, I dabbled in various side hustles, from selling candy bars at school to becoming a soccer referee. As I entered adulthood, my side hustles transitioned into more serious ventures. I remember the time when I started a chain of smoke shops and even owned a bar. Despite the challenges, these experiences shaped me into the entrepreneur I am today. In recent years, I've talked to many people who struggle with defining their side hustles and understanding when it's time to turn them into full-time gigs. I've realized that it's essential to identify what you don't enjoy doing and then focus on developing a passion or hobby that has the potential to generate income. It's all about setting clear goals, researching the market, and understanding what people are willing to pay for. But most importantly, never let others dictate your choices. Your side hustle might just lead you to your main gig and the success you've always dreamed of.
In this episode you will:
Are you an entrepreneurial individual eager to launch a side hustle? Have you been misled by these three common myths about when a side hustle becomes a full-time gig? Don't worry, I'm here to set the record straight and share the truth with you.

"When you are creating content, when you are providing value to people, ask yourself, what do you want them to do with that information for their life or for their business?"
In this episode of Will Talks biz, Cassie and I discuss the challenge many entrepreneurs and creatives find around giving away valuable information for free. There is often an internal conflict between giving away valuable information for free or selling it as a service to pay the bills. Instead of worrying about “what if”, use that the free content as a gateway to a customized and personalized experience.
The key to giving value is knowing the importance of having a clear call to action when creating content. There is also a need to be vulnerable and connect with clients on a human level. He also suggested that giving away knowledge and partnering with people who can provide valuable information can be beneficial as well. In this episode, you will learn: 1. advice for business owners who are hesitant to give away information online 2. how to use free content to entice customers to create customized experiences 3. how to use storytelling to build relationships and trust with customers
"Give it away or just help people and they'll come back to you." -Tony Robbins
Episode Highlights
[00:00:30] One of the challenges that clients have shared with me with marketing their brand or their products is that they don't want to give too much information away for free. Free content can be a gateway to get people interested into a customized personalized experience.
[00:05:32] Are you trying to look for a long-term contract with a client or are you just trying to get a one off speaking gig? That's where you must know the value and intent of the kind of brand or service or product you're offering.
[00:07:59] When you're creating content for your business or you're building out services, the goal is to get someone to take the next step at the ladder. Having clear calls to action too, really help to convert people to that next step.
[00:14:42] When you have a service that you're selling another business, you have to go in there with them being first. What is going to solve the potential client’s needs? How can I solve it? What benefit is that adding to them? Trust in your service providers is key.
[00:18:22] The title of the book is I Can't Read a Guide to Success Through Failure. It's about my own personal struggles with reading and what I was able to overcome to get where I'm at in life. The book really speaks to the ones who are struggling the most..
[00:19:57] If you are hesitant about sharing value with people and giving away too much, I encourage you not to be worried about that. The best way to start is to peel the curtain back on your story, your experience, as Will did in his book, share Life Lessons with People.

"I'm a firm believer that people bank with people. An institution is important, don't get me wrong, but people bank with a person." Paul T. Long returns to talk more about the South Sound Business Summit, which he created and has been running since 2015. Paul's passion for educating and empowering the small business community lead to him creating this successful Summit. He shares how the experience led to a personal journey of self-discovery, education, and giving back.
Through hard work and dedication, he was able to create the South Sound Business Summit and connect people of different backgrounds to learn and grow in their businesses. With the help of generous sponsors and the local Chambers of Commerce, Paul was able to provide a space for small business owners to come together, learn and share their stories. His mission to give back, educate, and bring people together has been a success and continues to grow each year.
In this episode, you learn: 1. how to create a personal brand to grow your business 2. the importance of diversified speakers and attendees for events 3. the benefits of building a relationship with a business banker before you need them. This year Paul’s South Bend Business Summit is going to be Thursday, May 4, at McGavic Center in Lakewood, which is just south of Tacoma. This year he is partnering with a longtime friend of his who has been a phenomenal business support person. This is an opportunity for business owners to get together, learn and meet others. If you’d like more information on it, make sure to connect with Paul.
Episode Highlights
[00:01:29] In 2015, I created the South Sound Business Summit for this area because I saw a need to be able to support the small business community.
[00:03:09] The summit is more of a presentation style. It's very auditorium focused and education through speakers. There are not tables around the room to everyone to sell something. It is a matter of education and learning.
[00:05:41] Each year we do a survey at the end of the event. What are the topics that you want to hear for the next year? And then we go out and go and get those speakers. It's all chosen by the attendees.
[00:06:55] One of the things that is absolutely critical to building a summit is that you're bringing in a diversified group of individuals. Chambers of Commerce are phenomenal organizations that are out there helping the business community. Why not have them help you be successful?
[00:08:33] My goal of putting this on was not to make money. And if I did make money, I want any profit to go to a small business organization in our community as a donation. Over the years, we've probably given over $10,000 in ticket sales and sponsorship.
[00:11:30]
A lot of times we as business owners think that we should just rely on our own audiences to promote something. But there's other audiences out there that have been built under great, relevant companies that we can tap into and build relationships with. How has that collaboration really been effective?
[00:15:52]
Get a relationship with a business banker before you need them. As long as you are willing to do the hard work, I'm going to guide you through the way.

"The lending process is a mystery, but I'm here to peel back the onion and dive deep into the details to help educate people."
In this episode I welcome Paul Long, a 26-year banking industry veteran and SBA lending manager at a local credit union. He is on a mission to reveal the mysteries of the lending process and help small business owners understand it. Today he helps us by dispelling some of the myths and misconceptions about SBA loans.
After years of working in banking, Paul decided to focus on business banking, specializing in SBA loans. He found a love for educating business owners about the benefits of loan programs like SBA, which require lower down payments and longer terms than traditional loans. There are many financial resources small business owners tend to overlook, like getting help restructuring their balance sheets, purchasing equipment, acquiring another business, and purchasing commercial real estate.
Now Paul works for a local credit union as an SBA lending manager. He is passionate about helping businesses grow, expand, and acquire a business. He helps business owners bust the myth that SBA loans take too long, and educates them on the programs available, and understand how to qualify.
During our conversation Paul acts as a guide to the benefits of SBA loans and how they can help your small business grow. In this episode, you will: 1. Discover the mystery behind the bank lending process. 2. Learn how to qualify for an SBA loan. 3. Get the facts on PPP and EIDL programs.
Paul is dedicated to helping businesses succeed, and offers his expertise and guidance on his website and LinkedIn. "SBA loans provide lower down payments and longer terms to help small businesses grow, expand, and acquire a business."
Episode Highlights:
[00:04:02] Paul: The biggest thing with SBA is you can have longer terms and lower down payments.
[00:05:57] What the government wants to do with SBA is to help small businesses grow, expand, and acquire a business. It is for owner occupied businesses. That creates tax revenue that creates, hopefully, more jobs for the business.
[00:06:40] For the most part, most businesses qualify. Anything adult related in a sexual nature is out. Anything religious is ineligible, anything that's investor is ineligible.
[00:11:30] Paul: Make sure your numbers are in line. Make sure that you have up to date financials and your tax returns are filed. Every small business owner should have a relationship with a business banker or commercial banker. There's pros and cons to each program, so you got to make sure that which program works for you.
[00:15:38] I primarily work with business owners in Washington, Oregon and Idaho. If you are in those states and you need support and help in those areas, definitely get in contact.

"Don't take on someone else's monkey or burden - make sure you set expectations and stick to them to ensure success in your business."
In this episode, Cassie and I share about the pitfalls of taking on others' burdens and excuses and the concept of “the monkey on your back.” This phrase refers to when people come to you with problems and excuses and expect you to take on their burden. This often becomes a trap for entrepreneurs because these burdens can lead to inconsistency and frustration for both customers and team members.
That is why it is important to start shifting the burden of others' problems off your back. It isn’t always easy, but we talk about how it can be done. Specifically by showing the power of consistency, the importance of setting expectations, and the devastating consequences that come with taking the 'easy way out'.
In this episode, you will learn:
It is very important that you are setting expectations and training your team on policies, as well as giving customers options instead of excuses. Stop the excuses and start setting expectations to surprise and delight your customers.
Are you an entrepreneur who wants to ensure consistent customer service, but feel like you've tried everything and still aren't getting the desired results? Do people tell you that the answer is to hire more people or outsource, but the cost is too high? If you're struggling to get consistent customer service, this episode is for you.
Episode Highlights:
[00:00:31]
Shifting the monkey on your back is any problem or burden that should be solved by the person who's coming to you with excuses.
[00:04:14]
Too many people end up going out of scope often just to help appease the client.
[00:06:09]
Customer experiences that monkey on their back with something as simple as having their identification with their credit card. The inconsistency can create frustration among your team and among your customers.
[00:13:54]
Make everyone who starts at your organization read the customer rules. It's setting the expectation of customer service. Update your employees on those policies and those rules that you have within your organization.
[00:16:06]
As an entrepreneur, it doesn't mean you need to solve everyone's individual problems. When employees come to you and ask you to solve their problems for them instead of solving them themselves, that creates taking the idea of that monkey off their back.

"Don't take on more than you can handle, have an exit plan, and treat your business like a newborn baby - take care of it until it can walk on its own."
Over the years I have learned the delicate balance between hustling hard and burning out. As an entrepreneur it can be a challenge to manage stress, build a business, and find joy in the process. One important lesson for everyone is how to differentiate between a difficult day and total burnout. Burnout is when you no longer have the desire or motivation to continue doing something. It can be caused by stress that is not properly managed. Hustle culture is when you work hard with a purpose, and not just for the sake of working hard.
A good leader creates a positive and sustainable hustle culture in their teams. One way to set that example and create a positive work culture is by not taking on more than you can handle. Hire experts and treat your businesses like a newborn baby. Another way is to set boundaries and goals to maintain motivation and mental health. Episode Highlights:
[00:00:06] According to a report in 2022, more than half so 59% of American workers are experiencing or were experiencing at least moderate levels of burnout.
[00:09:06] Read about someone who's gone through certain similar problems or just read about leadership books or other aspects of what you're dealing with. Don't be afraid to reach out to that author and tell them how you connected with that. Building community around a certain topic or a thing that you're facing can really help fuel that drive and motivation.
[00:14:04]
Find your goals, hire for a purpose.
[00:16:24] If you're hustling just to hustle, you will burn out. Whatever you set for yourself as a goal or an accomplishment is yours and yours alone. When those days get dark and that time where you want to give up, just focus on your goal.

"When you start to spend money on the areas that could save you time, that could allow you to focus on the things that you should be doing."
It is not uncommon for entrepreneurs to struggle to find the balance between managing their own business and subcontracting work. During this episode, Cassie and I talk about delegating in business. It can be overwhelming deciding whether to cast a broad net for clients or specialize in one area with the risk of losing your own clients to competition.
As Cassie's business that continues to grow, she has had to find ways to address common challenges. She is a business owner who specializes in content strategy and social media. Every time we talk it is clear that she is passionate about helping entrepreneurs craft a plan to reach their goals and find success in their business.
The last time she was on the show she was struggling to find balance and success while juggling content creation bookkeeping. She sought advice and was guided to look for a specialist to take over the content creation for her clients, while still keeping her brand and revenue intact. Through trial and error, Cassie was able to build a more successful business that found balance. This time we talk more about delegating in business.
In this episode, you will learn: 1. how to craft a business model that allows for creative control and revenue generation. 2. what methods can be employed to ensure customer loyalty. 3. how businesses can use the scientific method to identify and solve problems.
"Remember from a business perspective, you don't know their balance sheet, you don't know their profit loss. They could be spending a lot to make themselves look like they have a nice business, but in the end, the tried and true businesses are the ones that can weather any storm, any pandemic, any type of uncertainty, and still be there to serve their customers, clients or guests." Episode Highlights: [00:03:21] I love the clients that I am doing social content for, but I ultimately want to kind of move away from that fully and just focus on the work that I am passionate about and feel like I have the most authority. [00:11:13] Be transparent that someone else is taking over, but be still part of the billing to make it convenient, and then you still have some creative control. [00:13:56] How much of a percentage do you ask for on top of that fee that the outside agency is asking to complete the work that you're having them do? You would take the I'd first ask them the quote, what they would charge. If not, then say, okay, well, you do it for also do the billing and processing for, I don't know, ten or 15%. [00:16:39] When you start to spend money on the areas that could save you time, that could allow you to focus on the things that you should be doing. I think that is ultimately going to make you money in the long run. [00:19:02] Identify the problem, come up with a hypothesis, and test it. That scientific method really works in business. Getting more comfortable with testing and taking more risks has been beneficial for my business. Connect with Will:

There are a number of pros and cons to using Social Media to market your businesses. It can be a necessary evil, but there are nuances, as certain platforms are better suited for different types of businesses. Negatives include people criticizing businesses on social media and the tendency for people to compare themselves, leading to mental health issues.
Giveaways can go wrong and people are hesitant to promote them on their own social media. It is important to remember that social media should be just one part of a larger marketing strategy, and to focus on providing a positive customer experience. Finally, it is suggested to try something different from the competition, as it may take time before they follow suit. In this episode, Cassie and I answer: 1. What are the pros and cons of using social media for business promotion? 2. How can businesses use giveaways to promote their brand without being seen as spammers? 3. What are the best strategies for businesses to use to market themselves outside of social media? Stand out, do something different from the rest of brands around you. What are some ways that you have marketed your businesses or yourself using social media as well as outside of social media? What's worked for you in the past?
Episode Highlights {00:29} There's a lot of benefits to being on social media. But there's also some downsides to it, both professionally, personally, mentally, emotionally. There is a platform for every business, but not all platforms are for every business.
{08:16} Some social media platforms are primarily for awareness building. It's more of the notion of just being present, being consistent with your presence. Social media should be part of a bigger strategy, not the end all, be all.
{20:01} Don't market just because your competition is marketing the exact same way. Think of something outside the box. With social media, ultimately, just add value. Have a plan in place and create content that is unique and different to you.
Quotes "If you're going to give something away as a company, yeah, it'd be great to put it out on social media, but you should do it in real life, make it seem more obtainable and not a gimmick or what are you in this? What's in it for you?"
"Experience the power of word-of-mouth marketing and stand out from the competition with creative promotions!"

Lori Allen is a speaker, writer, direct response marketer, and entrepreneur with over 23 years of experience in the direct response industry. She is the founder of Focus Escapes, a company that specializes in tours for people who love travel, writing, photography, and seeing the world differently.
In this episode, you will learn: 1. How to succeed in selling a product that customers actually want, rather than what you want to sell. 2. The importance of gathering customer feedback to understand what people need and want. 3. How to craft pricing strategies to create experiences that customers are willing to pay for. Lori Allen had a vision to create a business selling fun experiences. She was initially met with resistance since there was no existing category for what she wanted to do. After years of trial and error and successful business selling unique experiences, Lori realized that customers wanted something different than what she wanted to sell. After gathering data from customers, she figured out how to give them what they need in a way that made them feel like it's what they wanted.
Through this process, Lori learned an invaluable lesson on pricing - it's not about the price but about giving people an experience, power, and prestige.
Episode hightlights:
{05:02} It's so much easier to sell courses on things that people want to buy instead of things that you want to sell. You have to think about when you're making your courses, there's what people actually need and then what they actually want. {9:20} Every year I would start the year with 100 phone calls. By the time I was finished with 40 to 70 to 100 of these calls, I was able to schedule out our whole year. {18:57} When you have skills, you change them for little green pieces of paper we call dollars. As long as you can justify it in your marketing, the price works. There is no magic number. {21:06} Growth from six figures to seven figures comes with growing pains. The building of that takes a staff. The problem is often not the problem, it's how you handle the problem. {30:34} When I put stuff out there, I usually have to go for a walk immediately after, ignore my computer. And then when it doesn't happen, I just have to go forward. Failure is something entrepreneurs face. There are a lot of fears in the hiring process. Will a person perform in the long run? Are they who they say they are in the interview process? There is a lot of trust that is involved in hiring a team. When you need to hire someone, you have a need that needs to be fulfilled. In order to do what well you need to work on adapting your mindset on hiring. Be the boss that you want to work for.
Key Takeaways:
{3:36} Hire someone that can do a job better than you.
{5:38} It’s okay to want to look for someone that will save you time, save you money, save you energy. Reputation is also a big one when it comes to client facing tasks.
{7:21} If you hire someone and they fail at that task, you have to give them an explanation.
{11:03} Ask someone they they are leaving their previous employer or asking for references from previous clients. There is an aspect to their response to consider; how they treat their previous employer/clients is how you can expect them to treat you.
{14:14} Don’t hire just to be able to say you hired someone or that you have someone working for you. Creating an illusion of success isn’t going to be what helps your business.
{15:42} When you are ready to hire someone ask yourself what is the lowest hanging fruit that you can easily explain and hand over to someone.
{18:07] Treat hiring as though it is a problem to solve, not a hurdle that you have to jump over.
{21:21} Once you start hiring there will come a time where you will have to fire someone. You have to be prepared mentally to handle those situations as well.
Quotes
"As a business owner you need to replace yourself in the jobs you are less successful at because you time is better spent on the things you do best.”
“When you feel the need to overcompensate by hiring people simply to hire them, it can be a warning sign that maybe something isn’t actually going well in your business and your trying to cover it up.”

Any time there is a conversation with entrepreneurs it brings on a lot of reflection around experimenting within a side hustle. It answered some of the unknowns of Airbnb while also getting Cassie and I to dig deeper into what we define as a side hustle and how to know if a side hustle is for you.
Key Takeaways:
{2:30} A side hustle as something you are working on building outside of a full time job. It’s something on the side of your full time, bill paying job.
{4:02} Consider why you are taking on the side hustle. If it is your passion, great. If it is all about money then you are going to fizzle out quick.
{6:27} You can turn your side hustle into your full time business when your income is starting to be replaced. Likewise, it may be time when you are no longer to give the time to both because your side hustle as grown.

Too often people come up with ideas not realizing the entrepreneur opportunity it brings. Sierra Hartman is the editor-in-chief of Grit City Magazine, despite initially giving the idea of the publication to Will. Through his photography and writing he saw that there were many stories to tell within Tacoma, Washington. After encouragement to take the ideas and run with it, he moved from freelancing into business ownership.
Key Takeaways:
{4:15} Many people say, “find a job you love and you never work a day in your life.” Yet you also never take a day off.
{5:58} My personality goes into everything we do within my business. My sarcasm and humor. If I am having a bad day, I don't try to hide that fact. If I need to take time off, I do.
{9:37} Entrepreneurs in the creative space who have to juggle the business side along with the creative side can find themselves drained with less energy to create and give our brains more space to create.
{10:57} A big part of maintaining my creative side is to put myself into uncomfortable situations and creating regular routines.
{14:36} Even if someone else tried to duplicate this business in the same city, I am not worried about it because there are plenty of stories to tell.
{19:23} We offer the magazine as a way for people to tell their stories without trying to paint a specific picture or try to brand certain people or communities in a specific way.
{22:43} Everyone feels like they have to be all over social media to tell people about their business, but business owners are tired of it. So many are shifting to fostering genuine human connection. We are all about telling stories and stories are always better in person.
"Maintaining balance {with my family and personal life} is more important to me than meeting a deadline and making a sale."
“As business owners you have to make priorities because you can’t do everything, but maintaining creativity is something I need to prioritize.”

As we close out 2022 we are taking time to reflect on business in 2022 and what we wish business owners would do more of in 2023.
Key Takeaways:
{3:06} Business owners need to prioritize internal culture and people development more.
{5:57} There are people that have experience yet are lacking interview experience. Due to the labor shortage, there are many people that are getting jobs without any intentional screening or onboarding. Business owners need more of a process for hiring.
{7:38} Business owners should talk more about the problems they solve and the solutions they provide versus focusing so much on why their company is so great.
{11:43} Leaders need to read more. Create a reading list for yourself as a leader.
“You don’t improve customer service. You improve your culture and improved customer service will naturally follow.”
“If there’s a problem in your business, there’s a book that can solve it.”

Jeff Barnes is back to talk about his other book, Beyond the Wisdom of Walt. This book explores lessons from Epcot at Walt Disney World, which was Walt Disney’s final dream before he passed. Walt did not like sequels. After the success of Disneyland countries around the world kept calling wanting their own version. However, Walt’s response was always the same; “No. there will never be another Disneyland.” After writing his first book, Jeff had a similar sentiment. As he explored the history and lessons, he found that the story was there and completed the book two years after the first one.
Key Takeaways:
{5:11} Beyond the Wisdom of Walt tells the story about the leaders that had to pick things up after Walt Disney’s death, starting with Roy, and how they saw that final wish and dream of Walt through.
{6:52} Walt was interested in building a team that had the best ideas and letting them go and seeing what they could create, versus position, power, authority, and organizational charts.
{8:48} A reporter from the Orlando Sentinel had a one-on-one meeting with Walt. She asked him if he was the one buying all the land just South of Orlando. He gave her about a dozen reasons why he would want nothing to do with Orlando or central Florida. She left thinking, “he sure knows a lot for someone who doesn’t want anything to do with it”. They then broke the news that the mystery industry was Disney which prompted a quick press conference to announce that Disney was in fact coming to Florida.
{12:38} As of now only a little over 25% of the land purchased in Central Florida has been built on.
{14:05} Magic Kingdom was a necessity in order to provide the resources needed for building what he was calling the experimental prototype community of tomorrow, which was to be a domed city for the 21st century.
{14:37} Roy Disney got phase one of Walt Disney World open, but died two months later. This stalled the rest of the project including the vision for Epcot as a city.
{19:08} Jeff continues to collect stories and is working on building out stories and lessons from the international parks and cruise ships to create the Worldwide Wisdom of Walt.
{21:37} The utilidors at Magic Kingdom are a way to carry out Walt’s vision of great guest service, which includes the environment that people are immersed in or guarded from.
{24:09} Walt recognized that his dream was not going to be possible if he did it alone. So just know that you need a team, like Walt needed Cast Members, to help make your goals, success, and dreams possible. They are never going to be more invested in you, your company, or dream as you are in them. So take the time to invest back into your most important resource; the humans in your company.
“Walt knew that it {Epcot} was a fluid vision, and I think we have forgotten that.”
“Most of us love Disney. Why not take something you love and use it to level up in your life and business?” “I love my mission and I love my purpose because I love Disney.”

It’s not hard to remember your first visit to Disneyland. My first reaction in the parking lot was, “what? That’s it? I thought it would be huge!” Yet I had a wonderful time making memories that have stuck with me ever since then. Today’s guest is someone that hated his first trip to Disneyland. However, he has now built a career around educating people on the history of the park and powerful lessons we can learn from Walt Disney. We couldn’t be more excited to share this conversation with Jeff Barnes and the Wisdom of Walt.
Key Takeaways:
{3:27} Curiosity had Jeff wondering why everyone else loved Disneyland when he hated it. What was making it work when it seemed so broken to him? That is when he discovered Walt’s story and the fact that the park is challenging us to live our story.
{4:20} After giving the first lecture in the course Jeff was diagnosed with a life-threatening brain tumor. He was told he needed brain surgery the next week, but he refused. He called on the “all in” mindset of Walt Disney and told his doctors he was staying committed to teaching the course.
{7:03} Pay attention to what you’re thinking about. Pay attention to your ideas. Make sure you’re consuming content that is moving you forward. We need to do what Walt did. Get off the park bench and start taking action.
{9:38} Coming out of academics, Jeff was often held up in his writing because he wanted to make sure everything was 100% right, 100% accurate, true. He finally realized he had to let that goes because he wasn’t turning in a term paper or a doctoral dissertation. He wanted to be right as much as possible, but had to leave that worry behind since he wasn’t going to be graded along the way.
{11:02} Jeff uses Walt’s experience on Disneyland’s opening day, known as Black Sunday, as a reminder that things may not be perfect. It is important to take responsibility for what went well and respond well to the legitimate criticisms.
{13:01} Walt used four words to define his secret to success: Curiosity, Confidence, Courage, and Constancy (or Consistency). Most people excel at one. We need to be aware of our strengths and weaknesses as well as the strengths and weaknesses of our teams.
{19:21} Whether or not you love Walt Disney or don’t like the brand it is hard to name another individual that had a more significant impact on American culture than Walt Disney.
{20:46} Management is dotting the Is and crossing the Ts to maintain the status quo. There is a place for that. But visionary leadership is about showing people where they are and where they need to be. You know you’re a leader when you have follower’s and Walt had followers.
{21:47} Work like Walt by looking at the business through the prism of a story. Narrative, characters, confit. The bigger the dragon, the better the story. Use that dragon as a way to level up in your business and life. Hire based on culture and attitude fit. You can train on skills. Set yourself up with a solid culture.
“Every individual has their own idea, their own crazy thought. It might not change the world like Disneyland did, but it could at least change your world.”
“Our goal is progress not perfection.”

I was recently invited to speak to a business 101 class at the college I attended years ago. It was a great opportunity to answer their questions and share some of the lessons I have had throughout my experience in business.
Key Takeaways:
{3:07} Prior to going I looked over their course outline so I knew what they were learning and knew what type of questions they may have. The most important thing to remember was that they are still learning so it is important to steer away from lingo they may not be familiar with yet.
{4:27} One of the questions that stood out to me was “how do you overcome your own mindset?”. There were several other great ones that shows the students are really thinking beyond the lessons in their book.
{8:20} Speaking to students is a great way to learn more about the incoming workforce and future competitors. You could tell the goals and interests the have for business based on the questions they asked.
{10:03} One of the students approached me after and reminded me that I had once interviewed her for a job. She asked me why she didn’t get the job. That lead to an insightful discussion for both of us.
{12:17} Not many people ask about firing being something they have to consider within business, so it was a very interesting conversation for the students to ask about.
{16:38} More and more colleges are showing interest in bringing speakers in because it provides the real world experience to help put context to their lessons.
“Hearing people that talk about the real world makes the lessons they are learning real.”
“Read. Read. Read. Read. Just keep reading. It’s the answer to all your problems.”

Capturing your story for a book can be an incredible challenge. When I wrote my book it brought up a lot of emotion and many nights wondering if I should even do it. However, I stay focused on the end goal of helping someone who struggles with reading. It’s a roller coaster of emotion that is worth pushing through the discomfort. On the last episode Jody Maberry talked about the discomfort of hearing his own voice when he started podcasting and it led me to wanting to ask more questions. We couldn’t be more grateful to have him back this episode.
Key Takeaways:
{3:00} Having an audio book is incredibly important thing for authors to offer. It makes your content more accessible to a larger audience.
{5:27} Books are often a collection of people’s best ideas. Jody helps people shape the content that will go in the book and pull out the stories and lessons that go with it.
{7:20} One of the more impactful ways to pull out a story is by walking through their entire career from the most recent all the way back to the beginning. More times than not as you move through your career journey there will be ideas and memories that come up that were otherwise forgotten.
{8:35} Too often people don’t see the significance in their own story. However, your story could be the difference maker for someone because people are able to see themselves in you.
{11:15} By listening to books I learned more about my own story and the value in your story. I was going to write a business book that would help others through my setbacks. “I Can’t Read” came about my complete accident as I was promoting literacy and help people within their own career.
{13:43} If you think you want to write a book start by journaling each day. There is a story inside of you, you just need to find time to let it out.
{16:12} When you write your story it can feel like a weight lifted. It also gives people a glimpse of the story that they can see themselves in. Then its about you and them, not just about you.
{17:00} Lee Cockerell’s book changed my life and has changed the life of many others I have given it to. If he hadn’t told his story my life could have looked very different.
“You don’t know if anyone will read it. But you can at least help one person. If you help one person isn’t that more than you would have done without it?.”

Any time I listed to the podcast “Creating Disney Magic” with Lee Cockerell and Jody Maberry I feel like I’m there in the room with them as they discuss leadership and customer service. The show and topics offer information that reaches a broad audience. Today Cassie and I are thrilled to have Jody join us to share more of his podcast knowledge including how it can be a great way to build a brand.
Key Takeaways:
{4:07} Starting a podcast is a great way to challenge yourself to show up consistently and refine your own messaging.
{6:22} Podcasts allow you to build an audience and have people connect with you well beyond your geographical location. If your primary audience is local it could also be a recruiting tool by drawing in people to your business.
{7:25} ROI for a podcast can be hard to measure because the value is beyond direct sales. It helps build you reach, reputation, helps refine your own content, and can help with recruiting.
{9:30} There are three big hurdles to podcasting. One is that people do not like the sound of their own voice, including Jody. Another is that they are wondering if people will want to hear what they have to say. The third is wondering if they will have any listeners.
{13:33} If you are interested in podcasting a great way to start is to break it into many smaller topics. The more you can narrow your bigger idea down into smaller topics, the more you will draw people in to specific content. Sometimes those very narrow and specific episodes will be your best performing.
{15:13} To publish a podcast you need a hosting platform, but not many other specific tools. The technology and equipment should not be a hurdle. If you are still overwhelmed find someone to help with the production side of things.
{17:57} Podcasting can open big doors, such as Jody getting requested to keynote after someone heard him speaking on one of his podcasts.
“If you hold on to things because you don’t like the way you sound, you are keeping your message from other people..”

The conversation with Scott is powerful because he shares how much his journey to get better positively impacts the work he does with other businesses looking to improve.
Key Takeaways: {3:52}As Scott’s business and experiences evolved, his material got better. Eventually someone encourage him to write a book about all that he was sharing. That lead to his first book, “All Business is Show Business”.
{5:25} Part of what makes a great customer experience happen is that it is very unexpected, much like a taxi ride Scott had once in Jacksonville, Florida.
{6:44} Anyone can create the ultimate customer experience if they are willing to commit to do it and will be innovative enough to make it happen.
{7:55} In business there are two things that help us grow. First is repeat business. Second is referral business. The customers we have come back and buy more, and they are so compelled by the experience they tell their friends and colleagues.
{10:16} Zig Ziglar once say, “You can have anything in the world you want if you help enough other people get what they want.” Scott’s relationship with Zig gave him better insight into what that means. He meant if you put so much good out into the world, it is only natural that it comes back to you.
{14:28} Scott’s parents owned a small grocery store in southern Indiana. He often looks to the experiences they were able to provide with limited resources like there are today.
{16:54} One of the hardest times in Scott’s career was when he lost his first wife to ovarian cancer. Traveling while knowing the challenges she faced at home was not easy. Neither was staying positive on stage while life with so much negativity happening offstage.
{18:27} Persistence is different than resilience. Persistence is to keep at something to attain a certain goal. Resilience is more about how you live your life when you are knocked down and staying down seems like a viable alternative.
{20:35} The best way to become a great speaker is to speak.
{23:27} Practice speaking for audio and video then actually critique it with the intent to improve. Study what the mechanics are.
{25:39} Find the ways to make your speaking more intimate so people are drawn in to that versus making them feel like they are being lectured to.
{28:02} When reaching an audience consider the story elements. Who are the characters and what is their challenge? Give a human relatability to your product, service, or experience.
“When you really feel like you are making a contribution and feel like there is potential to have an impact it can drive you through the challenging moments.”

It is not uncommon for people to reach out about collaborating. They will be incredibly gracious and flattering within their request. However, things don’t always stay that way. Be aware of when people are wanting to fill their wallets with your money,
Key Takeaways:
{2:57} The more we try to promote ourselves to help others, there are going to be a few people that use that opportunity to help themselves first.
{3:42} The book “Giftology” highlights a great way to have organic conversations by selflessly giving a gift to someone without expecting anything in return. This is similar to a current marketing practice by launching a brand into awareness through gifting.
{6:37} There is a balance between gifting a set of your product or service and selling. As an entrepreneur we don’t put our guards up as much, but as a consumer it can feel overwhelming thinking they are being sold out every day, not thinking about the tool being used as a form of advertising.
{12:00} Pay attention to what you are able to get out of a deal. If they say something is guaranteed, be leery. Look for how you are able to get out of the engagement if it isn’t going well. It is worrisome if there are a lot of terms or additional payment to separate.
{13:42} It is okay to take longer to reach agreement. Have others read terms of an agreement and get clarity. It is okay to slow down and give yourself time to review documents.
{16:47} Be careful taking favors from people. Don’t feel like you have to purchase something just because someone was on your show, purchased from you, or did you a favor.
{19:45} My test for genuine collaboration is paying attention to people that practice what they preach. If someone genuinely gives out their advice and services and you are able to take it and it works, those are the people to model your leadership after.
{21:07} Transparency and being genuine as a brand is taking off in the world of marketing. More and more companies see the importance of hiring nice humans and people that have nice interactions with customers.
“There are so many opportunities to help people, not just try to get something from them.”

Justin Breen joins us again to talk about his newest book, Epic Life. This book focuses on how to build collaborative global companies while putting your family first. It’s what many people want, but don’t know how to do. Justin certainly does though because in addition to being a husband and dad, he runs two global companies, both a PR firm and a SaaS platform.
Key Takeaways:
{7:03} Epic Life was written for the world’s top entrepreneurs as well as for those that are wanting to get there.
{13:27} With an IQ of 139, one point below genius, Justin is able to be a bridge between the high IQ genius and the more typical, or even divergent, thinkers. Essentially connecting genius with another type of genius.
{11:42} Four stages Justin has observed when starting a company; Get to get, get to give, give to get, give to give. Entrepreneurs tend to exist in the give-to-give area, but only to the people that get it. They don’t spend time giving to someone that doesn’t get it because they are not going to get introduced to someone that gets it.
{16:18} The loss of my father changed me. One thing someone shared with me after his passing has stuck with me. “Maybe when we die we get to look at our whole life and we have the choice to come back to stay gone. Maybe your father got to see what your life would be like if he lived.” That became my mantra, because I wanted to live more after he passed away than I ever did before.
{18:03} Each chapter of Justin’s book, Epic Life, is a lesson from a top entrepreneurs or visionaries. His first chapter called “The Cream Rises to the Top” and is based on an amazing story found in his dad’s diary during his time as a bomb spotter.
{20:32} Gratitude has had a great impact on Justin’s life. Three actionable ways he stays grateful every day are by 1) write in a journal about things he is grateful for, 2) run outside regardless of conditions and 3) do a grateful journal on LinkedIn.
{27:56} The last lesson in Justin's book didn't come from a top entrepreneur. It came from a local soccer player who shared a powerful reminder to "just enjoy playing".
“When you’re constantly grateful it’s hard to be ungrateful. Gratitude attracts great people.”

Justin Breen joins us to give us a glimpse into the knowledge and experiences shared in his book, Epic Business. In addition to being a husband and dad, he runs two global companies, both a PR firm and a SaaS platform.
Key Takeaways:
{4:02 } Justin shares that the greatest joy of being an entrepreneur is showing my son’s that this world exists. It was not something he thought he wanted to do, but when his salary was cut in half he knew he had an opportunity to do something about it.
{7:21} All he heard over and over is people say, “we are tired of being the best kept secret”. He took that problem and started creating solutions, specifically for visionaries.
{10:37} Justin differentiates entrepreneurs from business owners by detailing the many things a business owner has to monitor and change within their world; revenue, office space, employee count, bottom line, etc. Visionary entrepreneurs are more focused on purpose, control of their time, profit, and changing the world.
{14:01} Entrepreneurs look at things are investments, not costs. You can’t help others if you can’t help yourself get out of the trap of not wanting to invest in what it will take to get your idea out there.
{16:45} The four things that separate entrepreneurs from others are bankruptcy or near bankruptcy, highest form of anxiety, depression, some type of trauma or traumatic event earlier in life. Many people would see those as excuses. Entrepreneurs never see excuses as an option which is what gets them to that higher level.
{20:32} Justin’s three suggestions for creating an epic business: 1) Give yourself time with no excuses 2) do what you like to do and what you’re good at 3) Only partner with people who see things as investments, not costs.
“The formula for creating a successful global company is to see a problem, create a solution, problem solve.”

Recently Cassie applied for a position for one of my businesses to see how I have set up my hiring process. As much as I would love to hire her, we are instead using her experience to talk about the reasoning behind the system I set up for positions that come available
Key Takeaways:
{1:56} By asking more detailed questions about someone’s motivation or their responses to video clips I include allows me to see who is really serious about the opportunity.
{4:07} The application process lays out very clear expectations, including the requirement to read Customer Rules. It paints a clear picture so people understand what they should except by stepping into this role that they are applying for.
{6:43} If people put in the time and effort to go beyond basic details I learn a lot about them before we even schedule an interview. It saves time for everyone.
{8:20} When an applicant submits their application they are sent a Calendly link to schedule an interview. By the time they get that link I know they have put in the effort to complete all the required application steps and have clarity on the expectations if they end up working for me. By sending a link for them to schedule it creates a much more efficient system for scheduling.
{10:32} There is a trial and error to hiring. The important thing is to remember to acknowledge the team you have without spending too much time worrying about searching for an employee you want.
{13:07} There have been a number of people that read Customer Rules before they even get to the interview. So whether or not I end up hiring them, they have now become connected to a valuable tool that will improve their customer service no matter where they end up.

Lee Cockerell is back to share more of his leadership knowledge. Today we talk about how in leadership you can create a culture of developing employees. Lee’s book, Customer Rules, includes a number of rules that are also helpful for a leader. One chapter that always speaks to me is, “ Be like a bee.”
Key Takeaways:
{2:09 } There was an old story about a little girl asking Walt Disney is he still draws Mickey Mouse. He explains that he is now a bee. He is the pollen and the pollinator that captures ideas and takes them new places so they can make things.
{5:05} Have respect for everyone because everyone matters. Every day your reputation is growing or getting worse. Every day you have the opportunity to make your culture better or worse. I want people to be excited when they see me.
{7:13} Excellence is a state of mind and it will come to life in your organization depending on how you lead.
{9:28} If a leader doesn’t think the front line is for them then they may want to reconsider their position. When you are on the front lines you are able to understand the business and the experience of your team and customers.
{11:46} Experience is the MBA of life. Scholastics may change over time, but the more you experience the more you continue to learn and grow over time.
{14:40} Lee never imagined the impact of the books he released when he wrote his first one. He knows that when people learn from him their lives get better because they realized the importance of experience, exposure, and education.
As a leader you work to grow people, not to control them. Without trust you will never get results.

Lee Cockerell, former Executive Vice President of Walt Disney World Resort, is someone we have talked about frequently. Since retiring from Disney he has written several books, does speaking, and has the Cockerell Academy where he offers a varity of leadership courses. Today he joins to talk more about his book, Career Magic
Key Takeaways:
{2:07} Lee wrote the book as a way to look back at his career and understand how valuable experience and exposure are to life in addition to their education.
{4:03} If there is something you really like and want to do, then become an expert in it. No one else knows the limiting thoughts in your mind. Don’t believe your brain because half those thoughts aren’t true. Set yourself up to be the one people notice.
{5:55} The best advice in Lee’s career were to not take things personally and get defensive and to become more open minded to feedback and the suggestions of others.
{8:19} The book Career Magic was updated to include insights and additional advice from Lee based on the lessons and stories in the chapters.
{10:30} Lee shared that one of his biggest lessons was to not get “too big for your britches”. To be a good leader you need the confidence of your people. You want them to see that you sit with them around the table, not that you sit at the head of the table.
{12:01} when you’re overly confident you are willing to take risks, but often they are the wrong ones. You may not think through all the possibilities and end up hurting yourself, your career, and other’s careers.
“I didn’t consider myself the boss. I came to consider myself a teacher.” Lee Cockerell

Telling people that you sold of business to a competitor intrigues them. The idea of a competitor has created connection to thinking we have to beat them or be the best. Looking at competitors as your adversary often comes down to your mindset.
Key Takeaways:
{3:57 } You might have more in common with your competitors than you do with other people. They are often going through similar things, being impacted by similar industry changes, and understand new laws that come to the industry.
{5:05} My goal was always to be the owner of my own land. Over time that was paid off. When you have a lease you can sell your business, but not the building. When you own the land you have more to give a competitor when you are ready to sell.
{7:20} When the pandemic hit I had to focus on the one business we had opened more than the one we were in the process of remodeling. There was a lot of exhaustion trying to establish the level of work ethic among new hires as my existing employees .
{9:34} A team first approach works because if you show you care about them, they will be there for you when things aren’t going well. Put your team above your own needs, making sure they have a place to work and a place they can rely on.
{14:53} It is so easy for me to tell the story of selling my business now because I am looking back. When you are in the moment it is scary, but all I can say is the only way to make that dream happen is to just do it. Just one day say you are going to do “this” selflessly for your team.
Eventually you’ll see that you can be more successful in business when you focus on building community versus competition.

Anyone hired to work at The Disney Company goes through an onboarding process called Traditions. This is where you learn the history of the company, the values how we are to act them out, and key customer service. Part of the experience includes meeting people from positions throughout the company. This occurs before moving into more specific department and role training.
The interactions with leaders are ongoing since they are often walking the front lines. This gives them the chance to learn more about the customer and employee experience. Many aspects of this intentional training can be applied to other organizations.
Key Takeaways: {4:35} The moment I recognized I wanted to start my own business was when I was in a position where employees were not treated well. I had the thought, “one day I will build a business and treat my employees way better than this.”
{5:25} As a business owner you have to be present on the front line to get the feedback from your customers, clients, and guests. The moment you get an ego that tells you that you don’t need to be there any more is the moment you start to have failures in your company. You won’t even know it until it’s too late.
{7:28} When you first set out to listen there will likely be several reoccurring complains. However, when you listen and work on finding a solution then you notice those complains disappear and your bottom line improves.
{8:40} If I were to be a consultant or lead a new company there are several things I would do. I would immerse myself into the business, listen to direct customer feedback, and adjust or fix the problem to make things more efficient.
(10:09} Sales are not as high if I am not out there with the customers. When I was not present I ended up getting some of the worst reviews in my career. When you are not visible you are setting up the opportunity for your customers to pick your competitors.
{12:58} If you don’t put the people on the front lines first, or where the revenue serves first, then you are setting yourself up for failure in your business.
{14:03} Just show up and listen. Ask better in order to do better. Think of yourself as the customer and try to experience the company from that end to clarify the customer experience. It also shows your employees that you are there for them.
Our culture has a mindset of “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.” If we rest on that idea then we are missing the opportunity to learn and adjust. When we listen we are able to better meet the needs of our customers and employees.

Bonuses are used in businesses for a variety of ways. Lately we are hearing a lot about interview-based bonuses. The ones I have used are incentive based bonuses. I have used them as a tool to motivate and inspire. While bonuses may bring a quick result, I have learned a few lessons along the way including their long term impact.
Key Takeaways:
{1:43} Short term bonuses are the ones that are typically based on reaching a sales goal. These don’t work well with non-competitive employees.
{2:23} Bonuses can become an expectation versus an unexpected perk when they are overused.
{5:20} Retention bonuses sound great, but the people that came for the incentive ultimately didn’t stick around. On the flip side, the employees that were not incentivized are still with me.
{8:57 } As a leader it is important to own up to mistakes or else you are setting up a culture that allows employees to make excuses versus accept responsibility.
{10:21} Knowing what I know now, when I think about the people that are still here I have to ask myself if I would still have worried about offering bonuses for people that aren’t going to be here?
Offering bonuses or incentives may be a quick solution, but don’t you want a long-term solution to your problem? The right team, culture, and people there will come when you grow and develop them.

When you scale quickly it become easy to find yourself surrounded by toxic employees. Embezzlement, theft, and everything in-between can happen if you aren’t on top of toxic behavior. One thing I would tell my younger self is to fire them the moment they become toxic. Today I share my experiences on leading a team when the issue of a toxic employee is brought up.
Key Takeaways: {2:40 } What I define as toxicity is what will ultimately destroy your company. People won’t always get along. It’s when the motive behind someone’s behavior causes employees to want to leave.
{4:14} Management has to be able to recognize when someone takes credit for everything their subordinates are doing and only bring them information that makes them look better.
{5:20} Any time I have had this happen I ask them questions while letting them know this behavior has been brought to my attention. Be present as a leader to see if you see the same thing. It carries a lot more weight than saying “so and so told me”.
{7:08} “Why did you leave your previous employer” is a great way to gauge how they will impact your culture. If they tend to deflect blame to their previous management or employees then it is likely they will do the same to you.
{9:22} Toxic people are the ones that are trying to take people with them, trying to stir up drama, and trying to stir up other peoples lives when it should just be professional at the workplace.
(11:01} If you should a strong leadership with expectations people will be more willing to follow those and not get away with toxic behavior. Toxic employees can and have destroyed business far more than outside behaviors.
{12:58} Talk about performance, not people.
Set consistent expectations and consistent goals to avoid toxic environments. Don’t change those because a supposed rockstar came into the company or it may drain the longtime, loyal employees.

Today Cassie and I talk about some of the challenges that come when you are starting your own business. Right away I ask her about one of the action items that we discussed when she was a guest on an episode of Ask Will. It lead me to ask, “What’s stopping you?”.
{1:57 } Get people in your team or as a contractor to take care of some of the things you need done within your business so you can grow.
{2:55} There were times my bookkeeper was making more money than I was as a business owner. However, when you hire someone that is better at something than you would be they tend to be more efficient.
{4:47} Where do you value your time? Being a workaholic comes from an unwillingness to spend money to save you time. That time you get back allows you to spend it on things you value and are a better use of your time.
{7:37} There is nothing stopping you but your own headspace. The only person stopping you is you, especially by saying you aren’t experienced enough or don’t have the time.
{9:24} The thing that was stopping me in my business was hiring the wrong people that were destroying the good people.
{10:55} I’ve always looked at competition as an opportunity to find something that they are not working on. Despite having a huge competitor right by me, I could see they were lacking in customer service, speed, and efficiency. See what they are not doing and become an expert at that.
{13:40} In my biggest setbacks when I felt isolated and alone I ultimately thought how can I get better at this? In my more recent setbacks I have thought, “how can I help someone else?” As I was wishing for things it lead me to start building it as I was looking for answers.
{15:14} When you start asking yourself how it can be better or what it would look like, it changes your mindset from a self-loathing to a more upbeat and opportunistic mindset.
We were all born into this world knowing nothing and were nurtured to where we are today. It’s time to go live your dreams because if you don’t then someone else will them while you are living in regret.

Today we continue the “Ask Will” series, where entrepreneurs from a variety of backgrounds and levels can share their concerns and get insight from me.
This episode is with Katie Currens, founder and Chief Engagement Officer of One Spark Solutions. Katie’s non-linear career showed her the need for people to reconnect with their curiosity and creativity professional purpose. The biggest challenge she currently has in business is identifying a key market.
“How do I decide where to focus and dig deeper now, while continuing to work on building a platform and voice on a larger scale?
{4:40} The challenge with serving her current clients is that her professional history in education creates more emotional triggers since there is a need to innovate, yet so many systemic and mindset barriers. There are times she doesn’t feel she is moving the needle enough without getting in front of leadership.
{7:16} The moments where we feel frustrated and think “I really don’t like what I’m doing and I really want to focus on what I could be doing” are a trap. Sometimes when we are so focused on thinking “I’m so good at this, but I want to be somewhere else” we forget the value of reputation and word of mouth.
{9:46} It’s great for entrepreneurs to know where they want to be, but they should never forget who pays their check. And that’s the current clients.
{11:01} Where you want to be is great. How you get there is a journey. It includes keeping the revenue coming in by current clients while you’re working toward the next ones.
{13:05} Is it ever too risky to turn away opportunities while you’re still building? I suggest focusing on the core of what you are doing.
You can’t get to where you want to be if you’re not doing a good job where you’re at now.
Trying to chase the glamorous side of where your business could be eliminates the actual opportunity in front of you.

Any time you put yourself out in the work, whether it be in business or a book, you are opening yourself up to receiving negative feedback. My perspective on reviews has shifted since publishing my own book.
When you look at reviews as opportunities to learn and improve, the current and future customers can be forgiving. Customers should love you so much that they want to leave a review.
{2:48} Negative reviews tend to stick with us the most, but you have to think about the customers you’re serving and the most positive review you’ve received.
{6:23} The way a company responds to reviews says a lot about the way they will respond to you.
{8:52} When you get a review take time to respond with a simple “thank you” for their business or thank them for their feedback and ask if they have a suggestion. Do not ignore them and do not feel the need to overexplain yourself.
{13:51}If you ask someone for additional feedback, make sure to take the time to follow up with them so they know they have been heard and that you are addressing the concern they brought to your attention.
{14:14} Turn an unhappy customer into a raving fan by being empathetic and responsive to what they share with you.
{17:04} Do not remove valid reviews with concern, but don’t hesitate to flag or report spam.
{18:07} Set your team up for success early in your business by being real, care for the customer, and treat people the way that you would like to. And when you are starting out be direct when asking for reviews.
Customer reviews need to be looked at in context. Are they upset with service and quality, or are they mad that they were asked for ID or that there were unavoidable cost increases. Raise the expectations for those that left the five-star review, so they know they chose the right way. Treat those that left a one-star review as if they are still a five star because maybe they will come back.
There is always room for improvement. Customer reviews are a perfect way to know the areas you need to focus on.

When I look back at my early years in school, I remember the times a teacher would have students read out loud, regardless of our ability. Kids would become impatient when I’d not know a word. For me it unlocked a competitive side that was not going to let that happen anymore.
{2:03} Public reading is my greatest fear. It was even more in school, so I started looking ahead to prepare for my turn.
{3:35} If you aren’t able to read, keep faking it until you make it. If you get publicly embarrassed, fine, now what are going to do next to make it better next time. Don’t give up.
{6:04} When I discovered audio books I realized I was retaining more than I ever had with reading a book. I was so impacted by audio books that I cancelled Netflix and paid for Audible.
{11:35} If you’re wanting to write, just start. Write every day. Journal or write in a meaningful way. The times that are the most humbling for you may be the greatest lessons for you later.
{13:17} I kept finding books that were great for parents, but I could never find a book from people that went through that experience. I started to think, “how many kids have survived school by counting desks to read ahead?” There are people that could relate to me or benefit from my experience.

Entrepreneurs tend to look at other entrepreneurs and get caught up in comparison. This can cause feelings of imposter syndrome.
{1:36} The more shiny objects or things that you try to chase after or brag about, the more you will set you up for failure. Any time I got overly confident about my business something big would happen and set me back.
{3:07} Hire because you actually have a need or because you see other people hiring. If you hire quick, you have turnover quick.
{4:59} Are the employees your competitors are hiring give a potential client a reason to leave you and go with them? Not likely. As long as you are customer focused and providing for their needs, they will need you. They won’t be worried about the fact that another company has employees.
{7:23} There is a balance of being aware of competitors versus being all consumed with them. Don’t allow yourself to get to a point of unhealthy obsession. When you compare with competitors the reality is that you don’t know what their financials look like. They may offer a good deal, but is it a sustainable one?
{10:36} When you dig yourself into a deep hole you can either keep digging a bigger hole or stop and ask for help. There are plenty of people that have been through something similar and are able to reach out a hand and give their guidance.
{12:03} You should not be working just because you think you should be working or because of outward appearance. However, if you’re working on weekends because it gives you flexibility on another day, then go for it. You do not have to work 24/7, you just need to be aware of the business that needs to be done. Then do it efficiently.
Put together a list of values that define what you are and are not willing to compromise on and how those fit in with what you are trying to accomplish.
Learn from other’s mistakes. You don’t live long enough to learn them all yourself.

We are kicking off a series of episodes called, “Ask Will”. Entrepreneurs from a variety of backgrounds and levels can share their concerns and get insight from me.
This episode is with Cassie Tucker, co-founder of CAMM Media. She asks, “After bootstrapping and building all aspects of my business, I am ready to scale. How can I start delegating so I can build the business to double and even triple it?”
{2:15} Some of the most successful business started during recessions or major setbacks.
{3:07} Selling and bookkeeping are two areas Cassie is looking for the most support in.
{4:46} Get a bookkeeper. There is a tendency to not want to hire out because it can be expensive. You may think “I can save money doing it myself.” However, when you outsource that, you can get that time back to spend on what your passionate about and why you started the business.
{8:20} For booking now, I look at it once a month. However, starting out it’s good to ask a lot of questions including how much time it will take. Sometimes the systems you think the bookkeeper should do is not the most effective way. Ask them to see what you’re doing and what ways they can improve upon it.
{11:53} Wouldn’t you feel more comfortable with someone with more expertise doing your books than risking a major financial mistake that you could make?
{14:36} Word of mouth has been the key driver of the business thus far, so why not continue with that? At what point do you look at new clients or consider upselling to existing clients.
{17:13} Ask all your current clients if there is anyone they know that could benefit from the service you provide. Follow up by asking if they can ask if they need or would like to learn more about your services. Meanwhile, if you see an opportunity for your current clients, offer them that upsell.
{20:46} A lot of times we throw many ideas out there and get hung up on one idea. We don’t know what will work though. We learn what doesn’t work once it fails. But if you are having success through word of mouth, then continue to do that by upselling and asking.
Serve the customer so well that they cannot help but recommend you.

All job seekers have a 26.2% probability of receiving a job offer. Typically entry level positions have more offers than other roles, but for any position it really comes down to the interview process.
{2:18} Who you higher will greatly affect your whole team. To consciously think about who you are hiring is what I mean about hiring slow. Don’t just hire anyone that shows up to an interview.
{4:08) Anyone can look up questions to ask in an interview. I like to ask open ended ones that get you to learn a lot about the individual right out of the gate.
{5:02} I’ve tried a variety of things in the interview process, including personality tests and assessments, but in the end requiring them to read the book Customer Rules by Lee Cockerell has been the most impactful
{6:48} Using the book has helped show candidates that are invested in their own growth and are willing to take on unique projects and feedback
{9:09} I always send the same questions to candidates, starting with the requirement to read the book, to use as a benchmark and to provide an efficient system that can quickly eliminate or highlight candidates.
{11:18} Prepare for interviews by reevaluating the questions. Are you asking because you think you have to, or does it add more value to the interview>
{12:28} My favorite question from an interviewee was “how can I improve upon my interview?” That reveals that they are someone that has the mindset that they want to perfect what they are doing in this process. They are in a state of improvement.
{15:45} If you don’t hire slow you will end up like other companies with high turnover. You can prevent a lot of bad hires by taking a process, slowing it down, and asking the right questions.
{17:14} Reading a book changed my life and I know it can change others. It’s allows you to put yourself in someone else’s shoes and see a perspective from someone else’s and opens up your mind to thinking more creatively.
What book could become a standard for your company?

Hiring slow and firing fast was not a concept I was familiar with early in my career. That all changed when I started focusing more on customer service.
{1:33} If you want to have the best customer service, you have to hire the best based on what your business needs
{3:14} When you set clear expectations it leaves no room for misunderstanding
{4:34}The clearest way I fire someone is based on “will this serve our customers or disserve them”. There is no excuse for not knowing what expectations are when I set them from the beginning
{5:21} I no longer have guilt when it comes to firing people. I have watched people with bad traits completely wear out people with good traits, and I am here for the good employees.
{6:31} You can’t motivate people, you can only find the ones that motivate themselves and lead them to do their job well.
{8:02} In order to better serve my team, I focused on only hiring the best. If I brought in mediocre employees it would drain the good ones causing them to want to look for a different job. The most draining employees cause the good ones to quit.
{9:32} If someone is fired I don’t make a big deal about it, but reinforce the expectation with the other team members. It answers their questions about what happened, while showing appreciation for them following the expectations.
{11:49} Be better at a task than an employee, but then give them the growth to be who they want to become.
{13:22} Do not fire when you’re angry. Take a step back and assess the situation, but at the same time don’t hesitate to fire when it is needing to occur.
{14:06} Assess the situation. Have confidence in your decision. Fire Fast.

The day that changed my life was the day my former business partner ended the partnership by clearing out the store and bank account. My mantra “without customers you don’t have a business” was born based on the events that followed that discouraging experience.
I knew I had to make sure the customers wouldn’t leave, which is why I turned my focus to customer service.
{4:08}If a customer thinks your out {of business}, they won’t come back, so I used what resources I could to keep shelves stocked and serve the customers that stuck around
{5:07} Employees left, but some stuck around and the ones that did knew what I meant when I told them, “I’ve got ya.”
{6:32}It became important to look at examples of good customer service and look at how I can in turn customer service
{8:49} You must have better customer service than your competition. That is one controllable factor you have in your business, and is what lead me down my path the help others with theirs.
{10:32}Algorithms started putting books about Disney and customer service in front of me after my search to possibly attend Disney Institute Training
{11:18} Lee Cockerell’s book Customer Rules was one that really stood out and is now one I require applicants to read it in order to work for me.
{13:10} Requiring employees to read the book has cut down on training I would have had to do because now they have defined rules and examples. It also has eliminated candidates that weren’t willing to invest in their career development
{16:05} The way you treat employees and the culture you build impacts customer service because it sets expectations

Failure is a common denominator. There are many moments that we count as failures that are so big we never forget them.
Don’t let setbacks define you. Perseverance is more than just a word. It’s action.
