Today we wrap up our discussion of our March book, Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles. We loved rediscovering this classic text and spent two full episodes diving in. The themes in this novel still resonate today and Hardy was ahead of the curve in his understanding of the plight of women. We also announce our April book which we are so excited about -- it is a big departure from Tess! And of course, our usual banter and life updates - join us!

Today Sophie and I begin discussing our February and March book, Tess of the D'Urberville's by Thomas Hardy. This was a re-read for both of us and we were surprised at how relevant it still felt -- some themes will always resonate. There are no end of novel spoilers here - we only talked about the first 3 phases (about half the book) and will finish up at the end of March.
We also continue with our regular segments! It was so fun to get academic about this infamous text - join us!

We were absolutely thrilled to welcome Joanna Biggs, the author of our January book, A Life of One's Own: Nine Women Writers Begin Again. Sophie and I connected with this special book on so many levels and to have the opportunity to talk with Joanna brought our reading full circle.
Joanna shares her inspiration for this project, why she chose the authors she featured, and her hopes for how this work might inspire other women. We also heard how the cover art was chosen and it was such a poignant part of our discussion!
We were very taken with both this book and its author - we think you will be too. Join us!

Today we have a special guest! As most of you know, we welcomed a baby to the family two months ago! Our oldest daughter and her husband brought Adeline Mae into the world and we've all been soaking up all the love and joy that accompanies life with a newborn.
As we are a podcast dedicated to the Generations, and we just added one, we thought we’d talk with Olivia and hear her thoughts and early reflections about this very special time of life.
Join us for a candid conversation about the decision to have a child, the highs and lows of pregnancy and postpartum, and how perception matches reality. We will even talk about how reading fits into a new mother's world - and it does!
Also, don't miss the announcement of our February/March book - classics lovers where are you?

Wow, how are we at the point of making "top of" lists?!! This year has both been a whirlwind, and dragged its feet on the way out. But, it certainly was unprecedented when it comes to reading. Last year, my top 10 included backlist because I just didn't find 10, 2022 books that I loved. This year was totally different and they keep coming!
Join Deb for a look back at this year in books and see what made the list! You might be shocked...

I was so thrilled to welcome back Sara Hildreth! Sara was gracious enough to join me to discuss the 2023 year in books and we had so much to say! We both agreed that this was a banner year, no matter what type of fiction you love. From short story collections to unique historical fiction to stories of what motherhood is REALLY like, we covered a lot of ground. Sara is the curator of @fictionmatters bookstagram account and the Fiction Matters Book Club. She also cohosts the Novel Pairings podcast and writes one great Substack newsletter. On today’s episode, we get an insider look of what happens behind the scenes during a celebrity auction at a major auction house. Sophie’s job is incredibly interesting and she’s had a busy fall due to some very unique estates going up for sale. Today she shares what happens when the art and ephemera of big name figures go to auction!
This episode is a bit shorter than usual because Mr Wiggins got very wiggly! We chatted briefly about a couple books - one of Deb’s 2023 favorites and one of Sophie’s beloved classic favs. Join us!
Today’s episode is Deb’s October book wrap up! Of the 9 books I read this month, there is only one that left me flat - the others I both highly recommend and connected deeply with for many reasons - this is an eclectic bunch! From 600 page tomes to TWO short story collections, and some absolutely beautiful novels about motherhood, it was a good month!

We had a lot to talk about today. Given the horrific events unfolding in Israel, it’s hard to know what to say. Sophie and I talked it through and she discussed how the terrorism is affecting life in the city.
Wiggins has now been in NYC for one month! Hear the highs and lows of puppyhood and apartment life, and why we both won't be choosing singing as a career...this will make sense at the end of the episode!
Fall reading is the best. Sophie just listened to one of the biggest books of the fall literary scene - hear what she has to say!

On today’s episode, Sophie and I discuss Book 1 of our July/August book club book, The Postcard by Anne Berest. This is not only a longer book than we normally read together, but the first book takes up a significant part of the page count. So, we decided to divide our discussion between July and August so as to give each section its due.
This book is both devastating and beautiful, and we talked about why it’s a perfect choice for The Generations podcast. Sophie also shares some very exciting news and Deb raves about a recent non-fiction read!

On today’s episode, Sophie and I discuss our June book, The Fortnight in September by R.C. Sheriff. We both found this to be an almost perfect summer novel and we share some of the reasons it struck all the right notes, despite being close to a century old. This book has had a recent resurgence in popularity and we chat about why that is and what our most meaningful connections to this classic were.
We also discuss our favorite things of the week, what we’re reading now AND we announce our July/August book! It’s a packed episode. Join us!

On today’s episode we discuss our May book, A Woman’s Story by Annie Ernaux. Ernaux won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2022 and yet neither of us had read anything she’d written, so we decided to change that. We spent the month not only reading (and re-reading) this beautiful book, but learning about her life, her inspirations, and her very unique writing style. This book might be short, but it had a lot to say and so did we!
We also share some fun news and tell you what book we chose to read in June!

We found this novel had just as much to say to us in 2023 as it did when we read it in our high school and college classrooms. From early themes of feminism, to our first introduction to Southern literature, to why this 1899 story still resonates today, we dug in.
Join us for our thoughts on this tiny book that speaks volumes.

Today we have a guest who many of our listeners will already know from the world of bookish podcasts. Sarah Dickinson is the creative force behind and host of Sarah’s Bookshelves Live, which premiered back in 2019. Many of you will know her as the face behind the account @sixminutesforme. Jaclyn is Australian by birth, lived in Houston for a few years and is now back in Melbourne, but we’ve continued our connection over the miles. We talked about why she began her IG account, how it’s changed over the years, and we asked the probing question “what does sixminutesforme mean?” Join us!

Today we’re excited to have her with us for what we are calling our “seasons of life” episode. Between the three of us, we are at very different places in our lives and we thought it would be interesting to share what we treasure about those phases and what we miss or look forward to in others.

Persuasion a book by Jane Austen and Gillian Beer
Welcome to Episode 4! Today Sophie and I discuss our tandem read of Mother in the Dark by Kayla Maiuri.
We really enjoyed listening to this debut novel together and then realized how differently we interpreted the story. There is a lot to unpack in this rather short novel and after we taped, we decided we want to make book discussions an even bigger part of our podcast!
And of course we continue with our regular segments as well. Grab your coffee and come join us!
