Hope in Action Podcast is a new initiative by AfricaBrief, aimed at highlighting the positive efforts of individuals and groups in addressing challenges in Malawi.

MAPUTO, Mozambique—Wangari Kinoti, Women's Rights and Feminist Alternatives Global Lead at ActionAid, made a passionate speech during Session 3 of the 4th African Conference on Debt and Development (AfCoDD IV) in Maputo, Mozambique.
The session focused on Pan-African Feminist and Youth Perspectives and alternatives to Africa's Debt Crisis.
Kinoti emphasized the need for feminist approaches to transform the global financial architecture and prioritize women's rights in debt justice.
Her speech resonated with the audience, highlighting the urgency for equitable and just economic solutions for Africa.

MAPUTO, Mozambique— A call for reform in African debt practices echoed through the 4th African Conference on Debt and Development (AfCoDD IV) Wednesday.
The event, focused on financial challenges facing the continent, opened with impassioned speeches from key figures.
Hon. Khanysile Tshabalala-Litchfield, representing the African Parliamentary Network on IFFs and Tax (APNIFFT), delivered a stirring address.
Her words, rich in poetic language, emphasized the urgent need for change in Africa's approach to debt and development.
She was introduced by Moderator: Anne-Marie Borges.

In this episode of "Hope in Action" by AfricaBrief, host Winston Mwale shares the inspiring story of Keston Mhango, a former clinician at Ekwendeni Mission Hospital in Mzimba district, Malawi.
Mhango's passion for his community and determination to address the high levels of malnutrition led him to investigate the root causes of the problem.
He discovered that hunger and a lack of knowledge on how to prepare nutritious food for children were contributing to malnutrition in the communities served by the hospital.
Mhango's innovative solution was to introduce mobile clinics and primary health education to teach basic childcare skills. His idea was accepted by hospital officials and has since helped to decrease the malnutrition rate in his community from 49 percent in 1990 to just 1 percent in 2022, saving the lives of many children.
In this episode, listeners will have the opportunity to hear directly from Mhango and one of the beneficiaries of the mobile clinic initiative, as they share their experiences and insights into how innovative solutions can make a positive impact on malnutrition in Malawi.

Malawi-In this episode, we learn about a group of young people in Malawi who have taken action to combat the effects of climate change in their community. The youth in Malomo, Ntchisi district, central Malawi, are facing difficulties finding firewood and charcoal due to careless tree cutting.
In response, they have started a project to make briquettes out of groundnut shells and leftover maize, under the guidance of Reverend Samuel Dewa.
The project aims to reduce the use of firewood and charcoal and prevent the degradation of the land. The use of briquettes not only lessens the need to cut down trees but also creates job opportunities for the young people involved.
Alex Yapola, the youth coordinator for St. Paul's Youth Group, explains that the project has given young people a sense of purpose and educated the community about the benefits of using briquettes instead of firewood or charcoal.
This podcast offers an inspiring example of how young people can make a difference in the fight against climate change, even in challenging circumstances.

USA: Prince Dzanie (23-0, 19 KOs), a highly touted bantamweight prospect from Ghana, made a successful debut in the United States with a second-round knockout of Juan Gabriel Medina (14-12, 12 KOs) from La Romana, Dominican Republic, at the Garden Theater in Detroit, Michigan, the USA on Thursday 11 August 2022.
Dzanie, pronounced Zany, was patient in the first round, circled and studied his shorter opponent.
Dzanie stepped in with a clubbing right hand that dazed and dropped the Dominican for the full count from Referee Frank Garza in round two.

MALAWI: As the country battles the fourth wave of Covid 19 exacerbated by Omicron, the Malawi media have been called upon to ramp up support for the sensitization of the masses in getting vaccinated.
The call was made by officials from both the Ministry of Health and the Malawi Red Cross Society on Monday during a media orientation on Covid 19 Vaccination Best Reporting Practices in Dowa.
Among other things, journalists who attended the one-day workshop were also urged to fight against both misinformation and disinformation that is said to be causing vaccination hesitancy among the population, despite the pandemic wreaking havoc in the country.
On COVID-19 vaccination, a total of 1,745,048 vaccine doses have been administered in the country so far.
Cumulatively 1,072,229 and 388,978 people have received the first dose and the second dose of AstraZeneca vaccine respectively whilst 283,841 have received Johnson and Johnson.
Cumulatively, 672,819 people are fully vaccinated in Malawi.

MALAWI: The Media Institute of Southern Africa-Malawi Chapter, with support from Basel Institute of Governance, organized a two-day training in Access to Information (ATI) for the country’s media from Monday to Tuesday in Lilongwe.
AfricaBrief’s Editor-in-Chief, Winston Mwale, caught with MISA Malawi Chairperson Teresa Ndanga soon after the training.
Among other things, Winston wanted to find out why MISA Malawi organized the training in ATI, and what are the media organization’s expectations from the journalists who attended the workshop.

For so long, the conservation story has been told, but not from an African perspective. But even then, mostly through the lens of science and animals.
With less of the African people, cultures, heritage, use, knowledge, aspirations – all as part of conservation. And this is a role we need to reclaim.
First things first, as an African conservation organization, African Wildlife Foundation has been very intentional with cultivating the authentic African voice through storytelling.
This is because storytelling is one of the fundamental aspects of African history and origin.
Long ago, our forefathers and ancestors deeply valued storytelling because it enabled the passing on of traditions, myths, and cultures.
It is this same practice that has been transferred from one generation to the next up to date.
