This is a podcast with the exclusive mission to demystify therapy. Each week, I speak briefly (under 20 minutes) on a topic that is asked of me by current or prospective clients. Mental health and wellness is sometimes elusive. This is particularly true in these times with COVID, intense political division and the current (and necessary) spotlighting of systemic inequities in wealth, health, policing and education. Many people experience financial exploitation and abuse in their relationships. Although, it's widespread, there is little discussion around what it looks like, ways that people navigate through it or the impact that it can have on mental health. This brief video touches on the topic. Feel free to contact me and give me your thoughts.

We all understand in the abstract that lying and hiding information can harm relationships and damage vital connections. Something that is talked about a little less is the ramifications of lying on the mental health of the liar. In that respect, dishonesty and non transparency are violators of the black mind , not to mention relationships in the black family and community. I challenge you listeners to challenge yourselves to be as honest and transparent as you can. This will allow you to have the best relationship with yourself and open you up to what the universe has in store for you.

This episode has been published and can be heard everywhere your podcast is available. Hey Black Minds! In this episode, I briefly discuss findings from survey data from apprx 100 African American people on mental health practices. I was particularly interested in finding out if religion and therapy were thought to be mutually exclusive in older black populations. The findings surprised me but left me with more things to think about. Enjoy!
Disclaimer* This discussion and research is said to be based on data from African Americans. I must acknowledge that this term is far too broad as it includes anyone who deems themselves as both American and having some African Ancestry that is may or may not include spanish or latino ancestry. In this discussion, I am actually only speaking about African Americans who have America origin that predates the 1900's and who's story includes that of slavery, identity stripping, sharecropping, integration, the great migration and economic exploitation under capitalism. The findings may not apply to African immigrants after the 1950s or those that do not have a collective memory of the aformentioned social challenges of African Americans of earlier American origin.

I'm starting to see a pattern with my clients and families where there is an intergenerational gap in the belief in therapy, meditation, yoga and its ability to work with religion, particularly christianity. I'd like to know if this is something that alot of people are feeling and if there is indeed generational differences in mind/body technique vs. religion perspectives.

This 15 minute audio affirmation created by Calid B. is intended for black men. As we deal with the social constructs of white supremacy, injustice, police brutality, and the struggle for our right to exist, we have to keep our soul and inner belief in ourselves filled with as much positivity as we can. We have to fix our internal system before addressing the external system. This specific audio was created to raise your self - confidence, health, wealth, abundance, happiness and love. Positive affirmations are useful in wiring the brain with empowering thought and emotional patterns, at the same time dissolving old, negative and limited patterns that do not serve you. Instructions: Listen to this at least once a day, preferably with headphones. You can listen to this while you meditate or while you're moving around, just make sure to listen with intention and internalize the positive messages for yourself.

This is a brief description of what to expect in therapy. Starting therapy is intimidating but it's tolerable at after some initial discomfort, I believe, it becomes enjoyable.
