A series of conversations between two friends, discussing consciousness, reality and our place in it
Hello, dear listeners! I'm thrilled to introduce you to my friend Matt Barker. On a recent trip to Southampton for my nephew's wedding, I had the pleasure of staying with Matt and his wonderful wife Becky for four days.
During my stay, Matt and I recorded an informal chat, where we reminisced about our favourite teachers, discussed the nuances of people-pleasing, and shared some of our proudest moments. Spoiler alert: Matt once heroically saved babies from a burning building!
I also shared a emotional story about my my mums diagnosis of early stage dementia and how it has affected us as family.
I hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed recording it!

Benji talks about the joys of his recent holiday with his mum and girlfriend and the challenges of long distance relationships.
Freddo talks of having the opposite experience when enveloped in a love bubble with his girlfriend.
We explore the nature of direct communication and ask why it can feel so uncomfortable sometimes, while remaining crucial for personal growth and resolving conflicts.

The Story of My Dad That Died
While Freddo initially shares lighthearted tales of joy and inspiration stemming from a mushroom ceremony, Benji throws a curveball with probing questions about Freddo's relationship with his parents. This unexpected twist leads to a poignant and deeply personal story: Freddo's discovery of his father's lifeless body when he was just 8 years old.
Freddo recounts this traumatic scene with an almost robotic detachment, offering a unique perspective on how a child's mind can shield them from the full weight of such tragic circumstances. He vividly describes the event, highlighting his surprising lack of tears or immediate sadness.
As the conversation unfolds, Benji's inquiries uncover surprising revelations that suggest Freddo's father's death may not have been as random as it initially seemed. A hand-written note delivered to Freddo after his 18th birthday further complicates the narrative.
Together, Freddo and Benji piece together fragments of the past, gradually realising that there may be more to the story than meets the eye.
Prepare for an emotional journey as Freddo bravely shares the story of his childhood and how both he and Benji grappled with the loss of their fathers at a young age.
The episode navigates this sensitive topic with utmost respect, offering a deeply moving and thought-provoking exploration of their shared experiences.

Freddo talks about his latest YouTube video, where he answers the question “What advice would you have given yourself when you first got injured?”
This prompts Benji to ask a series of leading questions that bring us to the heavy topic of the suicidal thoughts and depression that Freddo faced back then, and an impromptu trip down memory lane.
Details never spoken of on a public platform come to light and while raw and emotional at times, it is handled with humour and tackled sensitively.
We talk about how psychedelics inspired a remarkably powerful act of forgiveness.
The spotlight of social media “progression” posts and the pressure of cheerleading.
The instagram highlight reel vs the shadowy reality of depression and poor mental health.
And while these subjects are indeed worthy, things take a more typical lighthearted direction in the tail end of the podcast with Benji’s jovial storytelling including funny accents, foolery and duck jokes 🦆 It’s a quacker.

Welcome friends to our 37th episode of the podcast, we discuss dating with a spinal cord injury, Freddo's recent UK trip and unexpected romance.
Benji feels gratitude for our friend Matts life, after an unfortunate diving accident left him with a SCI. Benji recounts the events of the day, recalling in detail how it happened, the rescue, psychological trauma and expensive out of pocket hospital expenses. Freddo feels grateful for his own hospital experience after his accident, and how amazing the French healthcare system is.

We start the podcast in the usual light hearted jovial way, both grateful for holidays and the ability to travel, before delving into something slightly more serious.
Freddo read a book that prompted a new way of thinking that was outside of his usual echo chamber and prompted a lot of research into a sensitive and divisive topic. Benji also researched a lot to attempt to give the subject the balance and delicate attention it deserves. We do clearly state that we are in no way fully informed on the subject matter, but felt that we wanted to discuss it anyway, with an open mind. Listeners are advised to proceed with compassion and understanding, knowing that we are all on a journey together to try to understand the world better.
There’s beauty in the difference of opinions and world views.
We'd like to leave a quote here from the well respected rapper and journalist Akala, which we feel is appropriate:
"... it’s impossible to be truly objective, you can try to be fair, from within your own biases, from your own culture and conditioning, even your language predisposes you to view the world a particular way, so I am trying to be fair, but I’m conscious that I’m speaking from my life experience, my study of the world, my personal view of the world, my family and my cultural background. If I grew up somewhere else, with a different family and upbringing, it’s entirely possible I’d view the world a completely different way. But the more different biases you can hear, the fairer picture you can build up of the overall picture."

Another fun episode where we discuss the value of ruthless introspection and the discomfort of being wrong.
Freddo makes some observations about the disability community and ponders if some people complain too much. Is the hashtag #disabilitydiscrimination being used to cry wolf? What defines ableism? Is it not better to not be disabled?
Benji ponders about life, love and jigsaw puzzles, how they all intertwine in a wonderful metaphor provided by the comedian Daniel Sloss. We discuss compatibility and compromise in relationships and the common challenges we all face.
Another podcast with gratitude as the main theme running through it, going full circle in the discussion rounding back nicely to the ultimate secret of contentment.

In our first remote podcast, we discuss the Will Smith slap with a slightly different take, we recall the outrage at Ellen coming out as gay 25 years ago and how bizarre it seems nowadays, noting the progression society has made to be more inclusive. Freddo confesses his regret at ending his youtube channel, while Benji is concerned about the rise of the far right in France.

Well listeners, this may be the last in person podcast for a while, as Benji prepares to leave Morzine. We discuss how life moves faster as we get older, Freddo talks passionately about the book; Stolen Focus, that has been life changing for him and delve in to discussions involving multitasking vs monotasking, shortening attention spans, flow states and afternoon naps.
Benji speaks passionately about the problem with hypernormalisation, due to sensationalist clickbait media headlines, and how empathy has turned to apathy.
We will continue the podcast remotely while Benji is in the UK, so don't worry, we'll be back!
Until then, love yourselves, and each other ❤️✌️
Benji learns some devastating news, which prompts us to talk about mortality, the best way to live life, and what may or may not lie beyond the curtain of death. We discuss the statistical peak age of attractiveness of both men and women, and what lies in the grey areas, which leads us on to a very spicy and controversial topic, which we both felt uncomfortable talking about, but we did anyway. Hope you enjoy this episode, be sure to send us your feedback @apesontapepodcast on instagram. ❤️✌️
In this episode we discuss the recent controversy of Joe Rogan, the use of the N-word and cancel culture. Freddo opens up about his plan to leave Morzine and how the grass always seems greener, while Benji has a humorous take on the situation.
Benji is absent from this episode, this is a discussion between Freddo and Pete Davies, the guy that was there on the day of the accident. We discuss how it went down, from Pete's perspective, how the day unfolded after Freddo snowboarded off a cliff and the resulting injury that left him paralysed from the waist down. We talk about how it could have been worse, what could have been done differently, and how Pete feels about it 3 years later and if it has affected his life at all. Things get a bit emotional at the end, but this is a valuable conversation between two friends that shared a very traumatic experience.
Twenty Twenty DONE!
This Episode starts off with a look back on twenty twenty one and all the things we have to be grateful for. The reasons we have for finding the silver lining and the hope it perpetuates.
Then, it takes a turn for the more sinister. We delve into what the future might look for us earthlings. Will we follow the flock lead by our idiotic politicians and the power hungry Zuckerberg or can we quit our addiction to consuming and realise that mere compliance may well be the path to our end.

Regular listeners may have noticed a rather abrupt hiatus from the podcast, that was unexpected. Life gets in the way sometimes, but we are BACK. We explain why we stopped, what we’ve been up to, and what to expect in the future.
We discuss a recent medicinal ceremony we had, we unpack the autobiography of Will Smith with differing opinions, and also ponder on what God’s therapist would be like.
We hope your Christmas is filled with laughter, smiles and mince pies. May your New Year be full of growth, positivity and hope.

This was one of our favourite episodes we've recorded, we reflect on Freddos reluctance to expand his comfort zone, while Benji drags him kicking and screaming on a boat ride that was just magical, plus Benji is beaming from his own experience involving boats and wakeboarding on the lake and the blessing of having wonderful, thoughtful friends. There is also a great video of him taking an almighty stack - which we will upload to our instagram @apesontapepodcast
We also joke about of the juxtaposition of gurus who spout enlightened sermons, while being inherently flawed human beings, giving some rather hilarious examples. Can we look past people's personal flaws and still take their sage advice? Are they hypocrites, or just human? And, more importantly, are WE doing the same on our podcast? We delve into some introspection, honesty and "instagram vs reality" moments.
Which brings us to the point of while we have blissful pictures of us on a boat, which will undoubtedly make wonderful instagram moments, Freddo opens up about how he has started talk therapy, through a platform called Better Help, and how it has helped him navigate the struggles he's been facing since the void left behind by his recent separation. It was a pleasure to talk about how affordable therapy can be, as it is usually the financial burden that can stop people seeking help.
We also end on some hilarious anecdotes of Freddos one and only fight he got in when he was in his twenties, which relates to a wonderful story that Benji tells of Ram Dass and his martial arts instructor, which ends in a lot of laughter at our own expense.
If you know someone who would benefit from, or would appreciate this podcast, please share it with them, word of mouth is always the best way to help this podcast grow.

Benji & Freddo chat about their carefree pasts. If you could go back to the past would you really want to and could you really appreciate it. Are the suffering and worries of life worth the personal growth or would you swap it all for a trip back to a life of blissful ignorance.
Freddo also tells Benji about two near death experiences he had, the dangers of everyday life, from the giant crane on a construction site to the tiny mosquito.
They also discuss each others creative process. The ups, downs procrastination and the trophy of the finished piece.
We love hearing from you, so if you want to continue the discussion, message us on Instagram @apesontapepodcast
Freddo surprises Benji with a piece of artwork he's been working on all week, inspired from their recent plant medicine ceremony. The ripples of positivity still emanate from that magical night and they both reminisce on the changes they continue to feel since the profound, enlightening experience with psychedelics.
Benji is beyond stoked with his gift, and is overjoyed to see the world through the lens of love once again. 😍
Freddo is grateful for recently discovering Audible, and recounts the knowledge he has consumed by listening to 9 audiobooks in less than two weeks, which provokes lots of interesting discussions about current affairs and what the future holds.
We both exchange funny anecdotes about our mums, and how much they worry about us, even tho we have long flown the nest and are capable adults.
Freddo tells the story of how he went from vaccine hesitant to getting vaccinated, which prompts some further discussion about the importance of being open to new ideas and the power of changing your mind. This also inevitably leads to further discussion of censorship, freedom of speech and personal choice, especially after we both listened to the amazing podcast with Yeonmi Park, a girl who escaped from North Korea with harrowing tales of what goes on behind the veil, a stark reminder of the darker side of humanity and the importance of resisting ideological conformity.
We had a lot of fun discussing the topics in this podcast, and love hearing from you, so if you want to join in the discussion, send us a message @apesontapepodcast on Instagram, we reply to all messages ❤️✌️
Benji and Freddo use medicinal mushrooms to help them get perspective on their current struggles, with overwhelmingly positive results.
Benji bravely opened up about his mental health struggles last week, and Freddo is still grieving the loss of Lou and Luna, so they both had a lot to work through and many intentions they wanted clarity with. They both got their questions answered, and much more. Often when confronted with such deep introspection, and mind blowing revelations, language can sometimes seem like a primitive tool to describe such vivid psychedelic experiences, but we do our best to explain how these often controversial methods can be used for immense benefit to help with struggles and depression, giving previously unavailable perspective, and often a masters degree in the seemingly obvious.
We hope you enjoy this episode, as always, please feel free to get in touch with us @apesontapepodcast on Instagram, where we can continue this discussion and answer any questions you might have.

It is not medical advice.
It is just an anecdote of an experience that we had recently, involving plant medicine.
We started this podcast with the intention of sharing ideas and spreading new ways of thinking, so please enjoy without judgement.
Benji bravely opens up about his battles with depression, despite his outward charm and wonderful lifestyle. He explains how he feels in a very relatable way and helps Freddo understand how it is unrelated to exterior circumstances. This was a fantastic insight into the workings of the mind when it goes dark and how it can taint even joyful experiences with an ominous shadow. Freddo’s penis is finally liberated from it’s shackles, and he is thrilled to be no longer tethered to his wee bag. We also talk about the vaccine hesitancy spectrum, censorship and the deplatforming of dissenting voices, freedom of speech, health passports and whether it’s a good idea to give up more privacy, considering the people we are giving it to have a track record of misbehaving, and what can be done about it. Freddo does his best to steelman an opposing view so it's not just an echo chamber, which inspires a very lively debate. Hopefully this episode can provoke some thoughts, ignite new ways of thinking, spread ideas and inspire respectful discussion about these polarising topics. We felt like this was one of our best podcasts to date, and we hope you agree. Please get in touch with us @apesontapepodcast on Instagram if you want to join the discussion, we love hearing from you ❤️✌️
Freddo has big news and a fresh perspective on his relationship with Lou and Luna and their imminent departure. These revelations were reached with the use of the slightly controversial substance MDMA. Freddo regales us with his MDMAmazing ceremony and the introspective journey it provoked.
Freddo speaks about his “wee piss bag” endeavours and the difficulties and benefits it presents. Benji and Freddo discuss how every adverse situation that creates discomfort comes with the silver lining of expanding your comfort zone and awareness.

In this episode we address the elephant in the room, and that is that France are rolling out mandatory vaccines for anyone who wants to live a normal life. While Freddo discusses why he thinks it’s a breach of personal freedom and comes out officially as “vaccine hesitant” - Benji reveals that he had his first jab just the day before. We discuss at length what this means, different ideas and opinions concerning the new rules, and the “health passport”. We ask why is there censorship of scientific discussion about such topics? We question the suppression of information through Google/YouTube. What it might be like living in such a dystopian future where we might be told what to think, the swaying of public opinion through media channels and trying to search for some truth in an ocean of misinformation. We try to keep the serious stuff down to a reasonable time limit, we do still have a right laugh and end on some silly anecdotes that will leave you giggling for sure. While we will give you guys a warning that we do discuss a very polarising topic here, we are totally open to being wrong about stuff and encourage respectful feedback and discussion. We’d love to engage with you @apesontapepodcast on Instagram ❤️✌️
In this episode we reflect on what we’re grateful for, as always, Freddo recounts his recent experience at the Emergency Room at the hospital, after suffering from an unpleasant secondary complication from his spinal cord injury. Benji winces and laughs as Freddo tells the eye watering details of having urethral trauma and the embarrassing procedures that follow, including getting inappropriately aroused during some soapy penis washing from an attractive nurse. Benji relates to this from his own experience after his hernia operation earlier this year, as you may remember from a previous episode “Benji does a Catheter” - Benji also reflects on being proud of his finished artwork that is now on display and the different steps in the creative process, ranging from crippling self doubt to beaming pride, back to nitpicking the finer details of his finished piece.
We also discuss why people are more inclined to be conservative when they’re older, and liberal when they’re younger, and offer up theories of why this might be, which leads to other tangents and sidebars that give us a good giggle. We had a lot of fun recording this episode and we hope you enjoy listening to it. We love to hear your feedback so please feel free to get in touch with us @apesontapepodcast on instagram. We read and respond to all the comments ❤️✌️
Freddo confesses his insecurities about being the wheelchair guy now Morzine is full of people, and Benji has to hold his hand while going outside of his comfort zone. We discuss how grateful we are for the feedback we get on the podcast, and how sometimes we just forget people are actually listening to us, let alone really enjoying our chats, which is so rewarding. We also discuss how Amazon have been destroying perfectly good products for various reasons, which is simultaneously soul destroying and understandable in our consumerist culture, which leads to Benji to share a fascinating and hilarious anecdote of protesting Black Friday with an unexpected outcome. He also confesses his deep regret that a prank he played on a friend over ten years ago, has had unintended consequences and we discuss how words and actions can be so harmful to people when they're said in jest, or just the fact that we are all capable of being massive dicks sometimes. Enjoy this podcast and please feel free to send us your feedback to @apesontapepodcast on instagram. We love hearing from you ❤️✌️
No longer roommates, we recorded this episode from Benji’s new apartment and explain why. We talk about lucid dreaming and Benji recounts one of his most recent and vivid experiences of flying like a bird over the London cityscape. Freddo also has a memorable birthday dream with a happy ending.
We also talk about how memories can be like Chinese whispers of the mind, childhood trauma, ideas could be aliens that influence the way the world looks, the complexities of the human mind and delve into simulation theory again.
In this episode, Freddo explains how awesome it was to go on a handisport event and mingle with other wheelchair users and the value of integrating with the disability community. He explains that despite difficulties with the language barrier, forcing himself outside of his comfort zone was ultimately rewarding beyond his expectations and how his new found confidence has already started to change his outlook on life.
Benji also reflects on his gratitude for his successful illustrations, general well being and gives Freddo shit for telling awful jokes and the need to explain why they’re funny.
We discuss this taboo topic and Freddo realises he has some internalised ableism, when the hypothetical question arises. Benji accuses him of being too rational and not open minded enough - no surprise there! We also discuss how the hypernormalisation of clickbait media has us yawning at the recent UFO data that has been confirmed by the Pentagon. We continue to talk about the search for truth in the vast ocean of misinformation, the lab leak hypothesis, conspiracy theories and how slavery still exists and thrives in 2021.
Freddo and Benji both feel particularly grateful towards their mothers. They also ponder the question "Is it better to be right than to be kind?" which reignites their concern with gender equality and the lack of space men have in society to display vulnerability and emotion. They also discuss the assistance they receive with this matter from Psychedelics, Dreams and Journaling.
We had a lot of fun researching for this episode and finding alternative views that challenge the status quo, and our own. It should give you food for thought. We love hearing your feedback on these matters and appreciate how engaged our audience is with us 😁 We reply to all the messages we receive, so get in touch on instagram @apesontapepodcast ❤️✌️
We start with a reminder to be mindful of entitlement, then we discuss the book Mental Immunity and how irrational ideas are spreading, how to equip our minds with the tools to distinguish the truth from the nonsense, if that is even possible, and we discover our own biases when it comes to certain subjects that should be obvious to debunk. Should ideas have merit even if they're said by someone you disagree strongly with? Can you be skeptical of your own skepticism? Toxic partisanship encourages groupthink and you are allowed to have ideas independent of your political persuasion, even tho it can be difficult to not follow your tribe. We also touch on expanding your comfort zone and Freddo acknowledges how far he has come since his injury two years ago, and how much is possible in the future when you zoom out and gain perspective.
It's Benjis birthday and we discuss the difference between Instagram and reality, we ponder what middle ground there is between documenting special moments and living vicariously through likes on social media. We discuss the benefits of fasting, and how it can be taken too far. Freddo talks about the focus of his YouTube channel and how it has helped other wheelchair users deal with their struggles.
Okay so we did talk about a very taboo subject in this one, and it wasn’t just porn, but we spoke about the other elephant in the room that is covid. Yikes! We discuss freedom of speech, suppression of information, living in a post truth world and who to trust when it comes to knowledge. We also have a catch up on how the first week as roommates has been going. And of course porn. We talked about how porn influences the thoughts of young minds, growing up with the internet and how traditional sex education is flawed.
Benji deliberates his choice to stay in Morzine or stick to his word and return to the UK and all the variables that help sway one way or another. Freddo Reflects on Lou's departure and the stark difference presented by Benji's poo.
This episode is quite personal and indulgent. If this is your first time listening to us or you don't know us it may not be the one to start on. But we can let you decide that. Thanks for listening.
After recoiling at the thought of sticking a tube up his willy hole, Benji actually gets to experience what it’s like first hand, after a hernia operation goes terribly wrong. His story is wild, and is definitely worth a listen. Freddo also has a perspective shifting realisation about being the wheelchair guy. We laughed so much during this podcast, what a story! Message us on instagram @apesontapepodcast
We discuss our induction into meditation practice and how it has helped us to not only shift our perspective on the way we experience our individual realities, but helps our relationships with others too, the parallels between psychedelics and meditation, owning your mistakes, and reframing apologies as a sign of strength instead of weakness. Benji also recoils at the thought of using a catheter, and we briefly ask whether you can have the benefits of a faith based lifestyle in the absence of religion or a belief in a higher power. Can it make you happier?
This is actually an episode we recorded weeks ago, luckily, as Benji had to have an operation last week and is still recovering. We can’t wait to share his experience on the next episode, so don’t miss that, it is quite a story!
If offence is taken, and not given, then who should take responsibility for "offensive" comments? If a smaller group of people are offended by language than a larger group, who should be censored? Is it right to censor your language so that others don't feel uncomfortable? What about false outrage, groupthink and mob mentality? Is it ever okay for to use the n-word? Things get spicy in this episode, so if you're easily offended, then beware!
Do you actually want to be happy? Would you rather win the lottery or become a paraplegic? Which do you think would make you happier? We discuss the surprising answer to this question, impact bias, the remembering self, the 5 rungs of the happiness ladder and which ones to focus on for lasting joy in your life.
Freddo & Benji discuss the sanctity of marriage and life long relationships. In this current communication saturated society is it realistic to commit to the one and only “til death do you part!”
After an unexpected powerful encounter with some edibles, Freddo experiences Lou’s perspective on life and their relationship, that leads him to a humbling epiphany.
Things get pretty juicy in this episode, when we bring up the subject of belief in a higher power, the pro’s and con’s of religion in society, and how certain plant medicines have helped us both peek beyond the veil of reality and ponder the existence of something greater than ourselves, and whether it is real, or just our imaginations.
Let us know your thoughts and feedback by messaging us on instagram @apesontapepodcast - Enjoy!
We discuss the healing benefits of psychedelic medicines, suffering, mental health, Benji’s time in the Calais Jungle, and the importance of gratitude.
Freddo gets the desired reaction when posing an awkward philosophical question to Benji about saving the human race.
In this episode we introduce ourselves and give you a taste of things to come. We discuss disability, Freddo’s life changing accident, and the problem with inspiration porn.
