HINESIGHTS Podcast — Dr. John Gibson: Cameron’s Legacy, Hope in Action
Content note: suicide loss, survival, and recovery.
In this deeply personal, compassionate conversation, I sit down with Dr. John Gibson, father of Cameron, who died by suicide. John and his wife have transformed unimaginable grief into life-saving purpose through The Canmore Trust, a UK charity funding lived-experience education, compassionate training, and safer systems of care. Please visit and support their work: https://TheCanmoreTrust.co.uk
John shares a moment that changed both of our lives. He was sitting in a seminar at the International Association for Suicide Prevention Congress in Vienna, Austria when I walked in. He recognized me and whispered, “This is Kevin Hines,” and he began to cry. Some time earlier, during his own darkest hour after losing Cameron, John had found a YouTube clip of me describing my instant regret the millisecond I leapt from the Golden Gate Bridge. That message cut across his suicidal thinking—and stopped him from taking his life.
After that, John picked up my second memoir, The Art of Being Broken. He told me he read it in four hours flat, and in those pages he discovered the power of narrative—that telling your story can save other lives. He felt a spiritual calling to speak Cameron’s name, share their family’s journey, and move hope into action. Today, through The Canmore Trust and his courageous testimony, Cameron’s story is saving lives.
If you’ve lost someone, if you’re supporting a loved one, or if you’re carrying your own pain, I hope this episode meets you with gentleness and strength. Please listen, share it forward, and consider supporting The Canmore Trust: https://TheCanmoreTrust.co.uk

Reading my new book, "The Dimly Lit Star" with my Mom!
We’ll celebrate the launch of “The Dimly Lit Star,” a book that’s a piece of my heart and a testament to the incredible strength and optimism of my mom Debi Hines, who guided me through the trials of childhood bullying.
This book is my heartfelt thank you to her, my beacon of hope, and it serves as an inspiration for children everywhere to discover their light in the darkness. 🫶🏻 Let’s unite to share this message of courage and demonstrate our unwavering support for the little ones bravely facing their battles. See you among the stars!
Also, let’s not forget that today marks the start of Mental Health Awareness Month. While it’s crucial to recognize this, it’s equally important to remember that every single day should be dedicated to celebrating mental health. This children’s book delves into several important and indispensable mental health topics among our youth. Let’s strive to maintain this celebration and foster an ongoing dialogue well beyond the month of May.
A massive thanks 🙏🏽 to my amazing illustrator @soluryn AKA Ryn Maria & My incredible editor & book launcher @brandil.benson for all of your work on this project!
I couldn’t have done it without you!

My Brothers Keeper series created to highlight the uniqueness to the African American Community and the disparities faced when people of color are in need of services.
What happens at the intersection of mental health and one’s experience as a member of the Black community? While the experience of being Black in America varies tremendously, there are shared cultural factors that play a role in helping define mental health and supporting well-being, resiliency and healing.
Part of this shared cultural experience — family connections, values, expression through spirituality or music, reliance on community and religious networks — are enriching and can be great sources of strength and support.
However, another part of this shared experience is facing racism, discrimination and inequity that can significantly affect a person’s mental health. Being treated or perceived as “less than” because of the color of your skin can be stressful and even traumatizing. Additionally, members of the Black community face structural challenges accessing the care and treatment they need.
This podcast features Wendell Fields who's motto is "Find your truth and live it". Wendell is a motivational speaker, coach, and has a many roles in helping people transform their lives. Check out his website and social media. www.wendellfields.com or @wendblew

In 2017 King attempted to take a turn in a different direction and opened a door for better opportunities. He didn’t have the best upbringing and grew up in a poverty-stricken neighborhood. He realized that poverty wasn’t his set destination and he never gave up on self-improvement and changing his situation. King is now a successful businessman in real estate, renting Airbnb’s out to prospects throughout Atlanta. He continues to pursue his dreams as a comedian/musician through stand-up comedy and plays music across the United States. His motto: #You won’t regret how far you get.
The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most recognizable structures to define a modern city. Yet, for author Kevin Hines the bridge is not merely a marker of a place or a time. Instead, the bridge marks the beginning of his remarkable story. At 19-years-old, Kevin attempted to take his own life by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge - a distance which took four seconds to fall. Recently diagnosed with bi-polar disorder, Kevin had begun to hear voices telling him he had to die, and days before his attempt, he began to believe them.
The fall would break his body, but not his spirit. His story chronicles the extraordinary will of the author to live mentally well in the face of his mental illness: bipolar disorder with psychotic features. With each mental breakdown, however, the author's desire to live mentally well - and to be a mental health advocate - pulls him from the depths of his condition. Kevin's story is a remarkable testament to the strength of the human spirit and a reminder to us to love the life we have. His story also reminds us that living mentally well takes time, endurance, hard work, and support. With these disciplines in place, those living with even very difficult diagnoses can achieve better lives for themselves and those who help to support and care for them.
This book is awarding winning and comes highly recommended. It's available on many platforms such as Amazon.

This is why it is so important to recite and repeat for you to believe things. Having a positive self-speech will change your mindset.
Incorporate this into your daily routine and see how your life changes.
Reaching out to people in mental pain is multifaceted.
There are several ways you can do this and Kev gives a few examples of how to do this in this episode. Asking uncomfortable questions gives people permission to talk about their pain. If you don’t know how to approach someone you know is in discomfort, you can always write letters and follow what psychiatrist Jerome Motto started in the 1970s. One last way you can help your loved ones is by providing them with your time, which is enough for them to open up about their struggles.
Remember to always have a moment of gratitude for the things given to you during your life.
In this episode, we feature the amazing Marvin Columbus.
