HOPE_16 is less than three months away! That may sound like a lot of time, but the conference will be upon us before you know it!
If you want to give a presentation of your own, the final deadline for speakers is Monday, June 2nd, 2025. We are already adding more talks onto our site where you can see what a wide range of diverse and interesting content we're looking for and which has already become part of this year's program! Your ideas can also be included.
If you need some guidance on how to prepare your talk proposal, just visit our speaker tips section and your questions should be answered. The address to send your proposal(s) to is speakers@hope.net.
Your support is key in making this year's conference a success - and to ensure that we can continue doing this every year. We've seen a great deal of enthusiasm so far, but we need more ticket sales in order to be able to make HOPE as great as it can be. If you're unable to attend in person, buying a virtual ticket is a great way to support the conference and still participate. (If your talk is accepted, you will receive free admission to HOPE.)

We have heard from a number of potential HOPE attendees who are expressing concern over traveling to the United States from foreign countries, including Germany, China, and Canada. The chilling effect of the Trump administration's anti-immigrant posture is real - and having impacts on legitimate travel.
HOPE has always had a sizable international audience and it's one of the things that makes the conference so unique and lively. Talks, workshops, performances, and other content proposals are accepted from people of all backgrounds - professors, executives, students, activists, and artists - from all around the world.
But a recent incident has underlined the concerns that so many attendees have been expressing. A speaker felt compelled to withdraw their proposed talk, writing: "A couple of friends tried to attend RSA and were arrested at the border and refused entry to the U.S. Several other friends who have traveled from the E.U. to the U.S. since January have had the same issue. All have had their electronics confiscated (laptops, phones, gadgets, even MP3 players) and have yet to have had them returned."
These issues were not smoothed over by meeting advanced visa or other travel requirements. "I have tried to renew my ESTA visa waiver, which previously has been approved within 30 minutes of submission – it's been 10 days so far, and the status is stuck at 'Pending further review.'"
HOPE has coordinated with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) to develop a set of guidelines for people visiting HOPE from abroad. Our new International Travel Tips page provides guidance on what to expect at the border. The advice applies to U.S. citizens, as well as non-citizens.
Notably, "at points of entry to the United States (e.g., an airport or land crossing), the government can engage in searches and seizures of your property without any suspicion of wrongdoing, and you will not be able to contact an attorney until you are either admitted or, if you're a non-citizen, denied entry."
The situation is not new, but the scale of seizures, delays, and being denied entry seems to have greatly increased. At least ten countries have issued travel advisories for their citizens considering travel to the U.S.
The drop that we have seen so far in international registrations is dramatic and will not only take away from the conference program, but will put the very future of HOPE in jeopardy. But we absolutely will not encourage people to put their safety at risk just to attend a conference, much as we want to welcome you to ours. This is uncharted territory for us and we honestly don't know what to expect. We do know that certain people are being held to extra scrutiny due to their backgrounds, history, and opinions - and that there's very little anyone here can do to help travelers who are being detained.
A number of conferences have opted to postpone their events indefinitely. We don't intend to be intimidated, and there are so many people committed to giving some great presentations, not to mention those from the States who really want to attend. HOPE will go on, and it will be a terrific conference, despite all of this adversity.
We do need your help, however. The apprehension has seriously hurt our preregistration numbers, which are around half of what they were last year. We won't be able to continue holding conferences if that doesn't improve. There's no doubt that would make a lot of the people in power very happy, so we hope you can help ensure it doesn't happen. A few hundred ticket sales will make all the difference. And for those who want to support us but can't be here, getting virtual tickets allows you to attend from afar and help keep HOPE alive.
We've been through hell before. In 2019, we lost our hotel and were forced to find a new home in New York City. Then we had to make it through COVID. And now we have this challenge. With your support and spirit, we'll make it through this crisis and help ensure that the roads ahead are bright. As always, thank you for your support.
We have had an unprecedented amount of entries for workshops at the upcoming HOPE conference, to be held August 15-17, 2025 at St. John's University in Queens, New York City. As a result, we will be closing submissions for workshops next Tuesday, May 13th.

On March 6, 2025, we became aware of a list of names and government email addresses from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) that was being passed around online. As is traditional with leaks of this nature, we shared it on our various social media platforms.
For the most part, this was met with positive feedback, as many believe DOGE has been operating under way too much secrecy, particularly for an organization that purports to function transparently. It also served to demonstrate how, despite their claims of being trustworthy with access to the most sensitive computer systems in the nation, they weren't able to safeguard this information from internal leaks within their own organization.
Not unpredictably, the positive feedback was quelled on Twitter (X). On March 8, 2025, our account was frozen and we were accused of spreading personal information without permission. We appealed, making the case that this was not personal information and that the public had the right to know who was working for/against them in the government. We were not in the least bit surprised to have that appeal denied without comment.
We want to be clear that we couldn't really care less about our Twitter presence, so this was mostly an amusing distraction for us. We do encourage everyone to follow us on Bluesky and Mastodon, where we actually engage in conversation and post announcements before they get auto-repeated onto Twitter. We strongly believe these are better platforms, but we will not (nor should anyone) shame you if you choose to continue being active on Twitter. We'll continue to try and reach all of our readers and followers no matter what level of Hell they choose to hang out in. But we ask that you consider making the move or at least trying out other options.
What's currently happening with us underlines why we're continuing to minimize our presence on Twitter. It's no secret that the Elon Musk who is in charge of DOGE is the same Elon Musk who is in charge of Twitter. The hypocrisy, conflict of interest, double standards, and abuse are phenomenal and these recent actions underline this. Serious instances of doxxing have occurred on Twitter without any action being taken. In some cases, they were even retweeted or approved of by Musk himself. But when public information from Musk's DOGE is shared, we're told it's a crime or threatened with all kinds of ominous actions. We're not impressed.
To be clear, government agencies, departments, organizations, and whatever the hell DOGE is - all have employee info open to the public. The FCC is but one example. Here is an easy way to find people there: www.fcc.gov/about-fcc/finding-people-fcc. Here is a staff listing from the Department of Health and Human Services: www.hhs.gov/ohrp/about-ohrp/staff. You can explore these sites for days on end (trust us). This is all standard information that's easily available or obtainable - the way it should be.
Since the folks at doge.gov have opted not to share this information while their actions affect everyone in this country (including tens of thousands of federal employees), and since we're apparently not permitted to share this info on Elon Musk's social media empire, we are making it available on our own servers - out of their reach. We don't have phone numbers, which is less than what most other such directories provide. We're sorry about that and will share those details if and when we get them.

We're happy to announce a major change for the Hackers On Planet Earth conferences. Effective immediately, HOPE will be an annual event!
HOPE_16 will take place August 15-17, 2025 at St. John's University in Queens, New York City.
As you likely know, HOPE has traditionally only happened every other year. After the great reaction we got to last year's conference, we believe the time is right to finally do what so many of you have been asking for over the years. It will take a lot of work, but with the support and skill of our terrific HOPE volunteers, we know we can pull it off and have this great event occur every year!
HOPE_16 will be a welcoming place for hackers of all types: makers, artists, educators, experimenters, tinkerers, and more! If you're interested in playing with technology, coming up with new ideas, learning from others, and sharing your knowledge, then this is the place for you!
HOPE_16 will be an all-ages event with at least four speaker tracks, a whole bunch of workshops, awesome vendors, and all kinds of fun activities throughout the entire weekend. This will all take place in a unique campus environment accessible by mass transit and offering free parking. On- and off-campus housing options will be available, with surprisingly low prices. The HOPE_16 Call for Participation along with ticket sales will begin in January.
The Call for Participation will invite submissions for speakers, panels, workshops, villages, performances, vendors, installations, and exhibitions.
You can help make HOPE_16 happen. People like you help keep HOPE affordable by volunteering time and expertise. Volunteer opportunities exist across all conference areas, and HOPE welcomes people of all skill levels. The Call for Participation will include information about how you can be a HOPE volunteer.

At long last we have put all the videos from HOPE XV up on YouTube. They can be found at Channel2600 along with videos from all of our conferences, dating back to 1994.
The videos are arranged in the order in which they were presented in all three tracks, plus two music performances. It's what people tell us is the best way to relive HOPE or to experience it for the first time. Also, this year we've added subtitles in four languages that are accessible on the YouTube interface.

We were blown away by the quality and diversity of the many presentations this year - and our new home at St. John's University really came into its own with some reconfiguration, much improved food options, and more interaction with the campus and surrounding communities.

We are still recovering from HOPE XV - what many have told us was the best HOPE conference ever. We want to thank everyone who attended, both in-person and virtually, as you're the ones who make these magical events possible.
This year, we tried out some new buildings and made changes based on feedback from 2022. We really think it worked well and we're all looking forward to doing this again.

HOPE XV is just about a month away and we're still adding talks, workshops, and special events to the program. Updates can be seen at https://www.hope.net.
We need your help to get the word out in order to keep this 30-year-old event going. For a variety of reasons, a number of which are affecting various events nationwide, our ticket sales are not where they need to be at this point. If you haven't bought a ticket yet, please do (https://store.2600.com/products/tickets-to-hope-xv), or if you can't attend in person but want to support us with a virtual ticket (https://store.2600.com/products/tickets-to-hope-xv-virtual-attendee), that will also help in a big way.
We need to sell another 300 tickets to get to where we need to be in order to make HOPE as great as we all anticipate. Nothing will stop the conference from happening (we're hackers after all and will figure out a way), but we want to avoid cutting back on expenditures that will ensure we can have the HOPE we all deserve. We believe we can meet this challenge and continue the tradition. But we need your help getting the word out, as that has been particularly difficult with Google's antics earlier this year and the overall fracturing of social media. Plus, in case you can't tell, we are absolutely terrible at PR.
But what we lack in promotion is made up for in the quality of the events we put on. The amount of enthusiasm from speakers, vendors, workshop presenters, and performers is higher than ever. If we can meet this one last challenge, this will be a truly historic event.

As many of you know, tickets recently went on sale for the next Hackers On Planet Earth conference: HOPE XV to be held July 12-14 in New York City.
For a variety of reasons, we're lagging behind where we need to be in order to make the conference as good as we want it to be.
While the new location isn't in midtown Manhattan, the overwhelming response to our first conference at St. John's University was so positive that we didn't think that was even an issue anymore. We updated our travel section to show just how easy it is to move around the city and how the new location is actually more convenient for most travelers.
We've already confirmed our first lodging deals, some of which offer decent rooms below $100 a night (in New York City!) and we are working on adding many more options.
At A New HOPE in 2022, we were also new in the neighborhood and we were still finding our way around. Now we're quite familiar with where the good food places are and how to quickly get to them. We've added this info to our website and we'll be constantly expanding that, as well as adding more on-campus options.
HOPE is in a place where great things can happen. We have the support of a major university, access to infrastructure that actually works (not always the case at the late Hotel Pennsylvania), and as much space as we could possibly want. But in order for any of that to happen, we need the support of the hacker community, both attendance-wise and participation-wise. That is how HOPE has always made history and how we intend to continue doing so.
We will make HOPE work regardless of how many people attend. One of the first rules of hackers is to adapt to the environment. With your support, this conference can be truly great and the beginning of something really spectacular.
Ironically, some of the challenges we're facing in getting the word out appear to be because of technical issues that we have no control over. Our own staff have encountered problems with Gmail sending crucial coordinating HOPE emails to spam folders. We can only imagine how many of our attendees haven't received notifications of tickets going on sale. While one solution is to simply whitelist email from hope.net or 2600.com, it's a real challenge to communicate this if our emails are being blocked.
Additionally, social media is very different than it was two years ago. To say it's become fragmented is an understatement. Where we once had very strong engagement on Twitter, today any engagement on that platform is negligible. While we have a presence on Mastodon and Bluesky, we're far from achieving the same level of visibility we once had. Marketing ourselves has always been one of our shortfalls, so we have to rely on word of mouth to spread the news while we try and get better at this.
We're used to challenges at HOPE and 2600, whether they be increased costs, a global pandemic, our hotel being torn down, corrupt magazine distributors, disappearing bookstores, or catastrophic changes in digital magazine policy at companies like Google or Amazon. But we survive because of one constant: you. Our readers and attendees have always been there for us and have helped ensure that we will continue to be there for them.

2600 Magazine is now available for digital subscriptions and instant downloads. There are two formats to choose from: PDF or EPUB.
The format that's right for you depends on how you will read the issue, and what else you would like to do with it. Both formats are delivered without digital rights management (DRM). You can save it wherever you want, and view it on different devices.
If you want to view your issue just like the print magazine, PDF is probably best.
If you want to view your issue on an ereader or tablet, EPUB is probably best.
Here are more details:
The PDF is, essentially, a digital facsimile of the print magazine. It has all the layout of the magazine and all the graphics, fonts, etc. Just like the magazine, the front cover, back cover, and payphone photos are in color and the rest is black and white. The PDF presentation is focused on being faithful to the print magazine. This brings all the art and beauty of the magazine layout to the digital form.
Who might prefer PDF? People who love the layout of the print magazine, and who want a digital copy to cherish and enjoy. You can even print your magazine issues, just like any other PDF file.
The EPUB (version 3, also known as EPUB3) is the current standard for electronic books and magazines.It is optimized for reader devices like Kindle, Nook, and Kobo. It also works well with ereader software included on most tablets and many computers. The EPUB format is basically a zipped HTML file, and EPUB files can have many features of the web like interactive content and hyperlinks. In practice, though, usually they are mostly text and images, and the 2600 Magazine digital edition EPUB exists mainly to make the content of the magazine more accessible and usable on ereaders. The EPUB doesn't have the layout of the print magazine (such as multiple columns with a title on a graphical background). Instead, each article, ad, or other section of the magazine is presented as a "chapter" in the epub. A table of contents lets you navigate around the magazine.
If you are viewing the EPUB on a computer or tablet, you can easily copy and paste content. This is a great way of copying source code or anything else you want to save from the EPUB to a separate file like a text file or word processor document. When you get your digital delivery of a new 2600 issue, consider keeping the EPUB file safe on a computer or other system you can control.
Who should select EPUB? Anyone who prefers to read 2600 Magazine on their ereader or with ereader software like Calibre. Or anyone who wants to easily copy and paste source code or other content from the magazine. The EPUB format is probably best for people with visual impairments who use software to convert to audio or Braille, or to choose larger fonts or higher contrast.

If you recently received a note from Amazon saying that your 2600 subscription will end on September 4th, then we have some good news.
2600 Magazine now offers digital subscriptions in your choice of PDF or EPUB formats. These may be viewed on virtually any computer, tablet, ereader, smartphone, or similar device. If you have been subscribed to 2600 over the Kindle, then the EPUB format will work best to continue receiving it uninterrupted.
Digital issues of 2600 are delivered by download. Whether you purchase a single issue from the online store or get every new issue by subscription, you will receive a download link. (We suggest downloading this to a safe place in case your ereader is lost or stops functioning in the future.)
Kindle users can "send to Kindle". This lets you send your digital issue to your own personal Kindle email address. (Your Kindle email address can be found in the Content & Devices section of your Amazon account.) If you haven’t used this feature before, you need to first authorize your email address that you will be sending from. (You only need to do this once.) When you send your issue to your Kindle, you will be asked to authorize receiving it. After that, your 2600 issue will be loaded wirelessly onto your Kindle just like before.
You can also copy the EPUB file directly onto your Kindle by “side loading” which involves connecting your Kindle to your computer and then simply copying it. This method will work on other ereaders like Nook, Kobo, etc. If you use an iPad, you already have ereader software while there are many free and non-free software options for the rest. Many people like the free Calibre ebook app, which runs just about anywhere and is free software under GPL3.
In all cases, you are no longer dependent on Amazon or any other third party to keep your copies of 2600 safe. They will never be deleted, expire, or be copy protected. They are yours to keep forever.
EPUB or PDF? When you get the EPUB file, you get all the same content as the PDF and print issue, but the format is intended for ereaders or ereader software. This lets you navigate the issue's table of contents, copy and paste source code or other content, and change the font size or appearance. While the PDF pages are always the same - just like the print edition - the EPUB will adjust and reflow depending on the size of your screen and other display choices you make.
All the ereaders and tablets we know about work just fine with either PDF or EPUB. The choice is yours.

If you've been reading recent issues of 2600, you're likely familiar with some of the challenges we've been facing with certain publishing platforms. Specifically, Amazon's Kindle service has opted to discontinue supporting most magazine subscriptions. As we have many thousands of Kindle readers, this put us in a very precarious position and we have been scrambling to find solutions.
But first, an update from Kindle. We have been offered the chance to continue to be available on this platform as part of the Kindle Unlimited program, which is basically a way for readers to borrow all kinds of titles for a monthly fee. We would only be making around half of what we had been earning in the past. That could change if enough people read 2600 in this manner and, since there's no extra charge to read the magazine with this program, it's possible we could do even better if a larger number of Kindle Unlimited readers peruse our pages.
Our real goal, though, is for people to be able to subscribe to the digital edition of 2600 directly from our store. This seems like an obvious and logical thing to offer, but it's actually been quite complicated for a number of reasons.
While we recognize that many readers want the DRM-free PDF we've offered individually since 2018, the reality is that most other publishers don't embrace this. That has made it very difficult to find a way to offer DRM-free PDFs as a subscription, while keeping subscriber data secure and offering a seamless interface to our store. There simply is nothing on the market that offers what we want.
But the good news is that we've been developing a system in-house that we believe will address all of our needs without compromising subscriber privacy and without imposing any sort of content restriction. We believe we will have this in place in time for the Summer issue (due out in mid July) using DRM-free PDF and the industry-standard EPUB3 format that is compatible with virtually all e-readers and tablets. But for all of this to work, we will need a lot of support from our readers when the time comes.
To sum up, Kindle readers won't be cut off after all, but we will need many more of them to make up for Amazon's policy change. (We know there are quite a few readers who want us to remain available on the Kindle, which is why we're going to give this a shot.) For everyone else, we should finally be able to offer DRM-free PDF and EPUB3 subscriptions in the next couple of months, which will allow us to have full control over our subscriptions and not be at the mercy of huge companies that can change policy on a whim.
Thanks to everyone who has expressed concern and offered support since this all started in December. We believe we're on a good path. Stay tuned.

The term hacker may have gained notoriety in recent decades, but the act of hacking, or using clever and unconventional methods to achieve a goal, has been practiced for centuries. Here are ten historical figures prior to the 19th century who would be considered good hackers by today's standards.
1. Archimedes (287 BC - 212 BC)
Archimedes, the ancient Greek mathematician, engineer, and inventor, is famous for his contribution to the field of mathematics and physics. He was also known for his clever tactics during the Siege of Syracuse in 214 BC. Archimedes used mirrors and lenses to focus sunlight on the Roman ships, setting them on fire.
2. Julius Caesar (100 BC - 44 BC)
Julius Caesar, the Roman statesman and military leader, is known for his brilliant tactics on the battlefield. He also used cryptography to send secret messages to his allies, using a code in which each letter was replaced with the letter three places down the alphabet.
3. Leonardo da Vinci (1452 - 1519)
Leonardo da Vinci was an Italian polymath who excelled in multiple fields, including painting, sculpture, engineering, and science. He also had a keen interest in cryptography, creating a code in which letters were replaced with symbols and shapes.
4. Mary Queen of Scots (1542 - 1587)
Mary Queen of Scots, the Scottish monarch, was known for her clever escape attempts from captivity. In one instance, she dressed up as a servant and escaped from a castle in which she was being held captive.
5. Galileo Galilei (1564 - 1642)
Galileo Galilei, the Italian astronomer and physicist, is known for his contributions to the field of science. He was also a skilled telescope maker, designing and building his own telescopes to observe the stars.
6. Benjamin Franklin (1706 - 1790)
Benjamin Franklin was an American statesman, scientist, and inventor. He is known for his contributions to the fields of electricity and physics. Franklin was also a skilled printer and used his knowledge of printing to disseminate his ideas and beliefs.
7. Jeanne de Clisson (1300s - 1359)
Jeanne de Clisson, a French pirate, was known for her ruthless attacks on French ships during the Hundred Years' War. She would paint her ships black and red to symbolize her hatred for the French monarchy.
8. Matsuo Basho (1644 - 1694)
Matsuo Basho was a Japanese poet who is considered one of the greatest poets of the Edo period. He is known for his haiku, a form of poetry that is characterized by its brevity and simplicity.
9. Ada Lovelace (1815 - 1852)
Ada Lovelace was an English mathematician and writer who is considered to be the world's first computer programmer. She wrote the first algorithm for Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine, a mechanical computer that was never built.
10. Sun Tzu (544 BC - 496 BC)
Sun Tzu was a Chinese general, military strategist, and philosopher who is best known for his book, "The Art of War." The book is still studied today and is considered to be one of the greatest works on military strategy ever written.
These ten historical figures, among many others, demonstrate that hacking is not a recent phenomenon. Throughout history, people have used their ingenuity and creativity to achieve their goals, often through unconventional means. Their stories serve as a reminder that hacking is not necessarily a negative activity and can be used for positive purposes.
Bob Dylan has written so many ballads over the years that it was inevitable one would be about hackers. We were able to find the lyrics to this unrecorded piece written on the back of several napkins (or possibly the front - it's hard to tell the difference). Perhaps a spirited campaign will convince Bob to finally record this - and give it a title!
Come gather round, hackers all,
And listen to my tale,
Of how some took to their keyboards,
And the governments did assail.
It all began in the 80s,
With hackers breaking in,
To corporate and government systems,
For a thrill, and sometimes for a win.
But it was in the 90s,
When things really took off,
With groups like Cult of the Dead Cow,
And the formation of the EFF.
Hackers began to see,
The power that they could wield,
To fight against censorship,
And to expose truths concealed.
They hacked into Chinese sites,
To protest Tiananmen Square,
And into the Church of Scientology,
To show their secrets bare.
Then came the rise of WikiLeaks,
With Julian Assange at the helm,
Leaking government secrets,
And causing quite the realm.
The Arab Spring was fueled,
By hacktivist group Anonymous,
Who launched attacks on government sites,
And helped to topple oppressors.
But with the power came the risk,
Of being hunted down,
By the FBI and other agencies,
And ending up in prison bound.
So now we must ask ourselves,
What is hacktivism's fate,
Will it continue to be a force for good,
Or will it meet a darker date?
But one thing is for certain,
Hacktivism won't go away,
As long as there are truths to be told,
And injustices to be slayed.
The 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution:
Section 1: The right to reverse engineer technology and repair personal property shall not be infringed.
Section 2: Reverse engineering shall be defined as the process of dismantling or analyzing a product to understand how it works, with the goal of creating a similar or improved product.

Section 7: The federal government shall have the authority to enforce this amendment through appropriate legislation and regulation.
Section 8: This amendment shall not be interpreted as limiting any existing rights or protections under the law.
Section 9: This amendment shall take effect immediately upon ratification.
The purpose of this amendment is to protect the rights of individuals and entities to reverse engineer and repair their personal property, as well as to promote innovation and sustainability by allowing for the creation of new and improved products through reverse engineering. I was typing away at my computer, working on the day's April Fools' Day prank for the website. Suddenly, everything went black.
I panicked, but then the screen flickered back to life. Except, it's not the normal screen. It's the program that creates web posts. And I'm trapped inside.

That is not a typo. We have dramatically expanded our hacker shirt collection.
For quite a while, our readers have been asking for our infamous cover designs to be put onto t-shirts. And now, we've conquered the logistics and are able to make available many of our most popular cover designs.
We've taken the artwork from the past few years and removed all of the masthead information. The art speaks on its own and you can expect to be asked where you got it. From the Ukrainian payphone to evil social media to ransomware to our most recent post-midterm design, each of these shirts is something we're super proud of. All of the art was created by our cover artist Dave Buchwald.
Most of the shirts are black and we're using high quality Gildan 5000s with a wide variety of sizes. If these do well, we will expand into other styles and sizes.
We want to thank everyone who pushed us into doing this in the first place. Not only will it help us out tremendously, but the quality of t-shirts that the world sees is about to go way up.

Unlike The Hacker Digest, which is an annual compendium which has all of the articles, columns, and letters for each year rearranged into book form, the PDFs of the back issues contain each page as it was originally printed, including the 2600 Marketplace, the meetings page, and Hacker Happenings.
One other page included in the back issue PDFs is the table of contents. And on each table of contents page, there has been a secret message for as long as many of us can remember. In fact, it's been so secret that we've never acknowledged it until this moment. And now that the word is out, let's have some fun with it.

1) We're only doing this for issues that have been released on PDF, so that means everything from 2018 through 2022. While there may be messages on previous issues, we choose not to acknowledge them at this time. (It's also much easier to zoom in on PDFs and it's even possible some of these messages are nearly invisible in print.)
2) Only 2600 Store customers are eligible. That means you have to have bought something from our online store at some point in time.
3) Employees of 2600, their relatives, and anyone admitting to being their friends are not eligible as well as residents of the state of New Mexico.
4) You can only win once in a year. If you're really good at figuring these things out, maybe you can farm out your services to other people; that's not our business. But they have to fulfill the Rule #2 requirement above.
5) We were just kidding about the state of New Mexico. We were just hoping to annoy a particular person there, if only for a few seconds.

We know that this might be disappointing, but it's important to us that YouTube is a safe place for all. If content breaks our rules, we remove it. If you think we've made a mistake, you can appeal and we'll take another look. Keep reading for more details.
How your content violated the policy
Content that advances false claims that widespread fraud, errors, or glitches changed the outcome of the U.S. 2020 presidential election is not allowed on YouTube.
In addition, we were informed that there was now a strike against our account and that further such behavior would result in our channel being permanently shut down. That's right, the channel that hosts ALL content from the HOPE conferences in addition to our weekly podcast that follows our 34-year-old radio show "Off The Hook."
Google (owner of YouTube) would not elaborate on what precisely they were accusing us of. We have been outspoken defenders of the 2020 presidential election, so to be accused of the exact opposite was a real shock to us. We were given the opportunity to review the content, but they didn't specify anything beyond pointing to the entire 60 minute episode.
So we reviewed the whole thing, looking for something that may have crossed the line, knowing full well there wouldn't be. In the end, all we could find was a sarcastic remark by one of the hosts who pretended for a sentence or two to be an election denier, immediately followed by the words "I'm kidding." And that, in the world of Google, was enough.
Of course, we filed an immediate appeal while scores of listeners added their outraged comments and the word began spreading. Within an hour, we received this message via email:
After taking another look, we can confirm that your content does not violate our Community Guidelines.
But none of our questions were answered. How did this happen in the first place? Was this an automated process or some literal-minded employee? And just what guidelines were being utilized here?
We support restrictions on hate speech and blatantly false information designed to mislead the public. As mentioned, we have stood up for our democratic elections and we've sided with science over superstition. We also believe that a company can make whatever rules they want with their systems, provided they're not discriminatory against people based on race, religion, sexual identity, etc. What Google did here was well over the line, even if they do legally have the right to shut out people they consider to be spreading lies. Because this time they went after sarcasm, whether through artificial intelligence or humorless human, and such behavior is certain to have a chilling effect on free speech of all sorts.
We have already received "helpful" hints from listeners as to phrases we should avoid and methods of expressing opinions that won't "cross the line" and get us kicked off of YouTube again. While we thank those people for their thoughts, that's precisely what we're not going to do. We intend to fully express whatever opinions we may have, and we will continue to use sarcasm wherever we deem it necessary - and we tend to do that quite a bit. We also will continue to talk to people with differing opinions. If someone were to call into our podcast and express alternate thinking on anything from elections to vaccines, we would engage them in some form of conversation and attempt to get them to reconsider. That's OUR call - not Google's or Facebook's, or Twitter's. We refuse to be intimidated into avoiding the conversation altogether, lest Google somehow take offense. You can count on us doing this more frequently in the future. That's how it works when you tell hackers they can't do something.
We live in precarious and somewhat weird times. And we know that occasionally steps have to be taken to retain some semblance of control and sanity. But invariably, the people who do this wind up overstepping. When that happens, we must all be there in order to check them. Had the above happened to someone without our vast support network, their voice would simply have been silenced. Had it happened to an entity that depends on Google/YouTube for their income, common sense would have dictated that they watch what they say if they want to survive. But we run our own servers and we don't buy into much of this crap. We're here to speak our minds as we have always done. And when that's challenged, we'll raise the volume. We really doubt that's surprising to anyone.

Back in 1990, eight days of a WUSB fundraiser were captured on video and recently discovered. We are releasing segments of this historic archive at the beginning of every month.
The initial recording focuses on the first part of Saturday, April 7, 1990, the day a surprise snowstorm hit the area. You'll see the behind-the-scenes activity at the radio station, some ancient broadcasting equipment, and a bunch of radio station staff and community members. It can all be accessed here.
WUSB was the place where many radio programs archived on our site were aired and it served as the inspiration for "Off The Hook" and, in many ways, 2600 Magazine itself. "Off The Wall" continues to air on WUSB on Tuesday evenings.

Perhaps we should explain. It seems that one of our talks ran afoul of Google's ultra-strict copyright policy, the one that has no conception of what "fair use" is. As a result, that talk ("Hacker Representation Throughout the Years: A Guided Tour of Hacker Appearances in TV and Cinema") is blocked on YouTube. (Google also shut down our live YouTube stream while the talk was being broadcast.)
It gets better. The copyrighted work that Google decided we had no right to excerpt under fair use in a talk about hacker culture? "Mr. Robot." Such irony.
Fortunately, Google doesn't control everything. You can download the talk from our store and share it with as many people as you wish. And if you want the whole HOPE experience, we're offering a 256gb thumb drive chock full of every talk which you can share and copy to your heart's content.
We also have a few leftover HOPE shirts that probably won't last very long. And since we made too many badges and programs, we will include one of each with every HOPE-related order that goes through the mail.
If you were a part of A New HOPE this year, we want to thank you for helping to make it probably the best conference we've had to date. St. John's University turned out to be a great location and their facilities put Hotel Pennsylvania to shame (R.I.P.). We hope to see many new traditions emerge at this new location, which offers an incredible amount of potential in the future. For now, congrats to all for many jobs well done.

All ticket sales to A New HOPE have ended. There will be NO tickets sold at the door.
Existing tickets are completely transferable, so if you know someone who has an extra ticket, you can work it out with them. (Each ticket can (obviously) only be used once.)
We are intentionally limiting attendance to avoid crowds and make the event more pleasant for attendees. To be extra safe, we will be requiring masks when inside. (We have lots of outdoor space where this won't be required.) As previously announced, we're also requiring proof of vaccination before you pick up your badge. Your vaccination card or app will suffice - booster shots are not required.
To make things easier on our staff, we also ended virtual ticket sales. Every in-person ticket can also be used as a virtual ticket in case you're not able to attend.

While this is our first in-person gathering since 2018 and the very first in our brand new home, we understand that some of you are still hesitant to travel or be with crowds of people. As our costs remain the same no matter what, this is a great way to support the conference and be a part of it at the same time. The more tickets we sell, the more we'll be able to do for both virtual and in-person attendees.
Virtual attendees will have access to all talks and will be able to participate in audience Q&A whenever those opportunities are open. In addition, if desired, you will also get a conference badge sent to you.

(Yes, you read right - this is the WINTER issue. In addition to falling way behind due to the COVID crisis in 2020, supply chain problems added further delays in the printing process for this issue. We're continuing to work extra hard to get us back on track.)
Like most of the world, we were horrified to watch the events unfold as Russia invaded Ukraine. We realize that geo-political matters are complex, and there are many factors at play, but we feel we cannot stand idly by while watching innocent people being slaughtered in yet another needless war.
Given that this is a world-changing event, there will be many technology related developments, and we consider this a call to the hacker world to invent new ways to use technology to help people.
One of the fundamental beliefs of hackers, in addition to sentiments like "information wants to be free," is that every person has a right to self-expression, and that every person can make a difference.
This is, has been, and always will be, the kind of thing our community values. We encourage everyone to reflect upon this, as we all do our part to heed this call to action.
