Dom Bullock is Luke Smith's Co-Host of @withthechiefsrunningpodcas1488 - Dom is an engineer, runner and all-round nice guy. He's been a friend of mine since 2007, and he's run the circumference of the globe.

Well, almost.

Enjoy a relaxed, laid back exploration of his journey with Luke, the significance of running in their lives and the impact it's had. This is a great interview, spoiled only by Luke's annoying comments, and a strange boot-shaped drinking glass.

Activists... can't live without them, but sometimes, living with them makes you ask questions, especially when you feel like an outsider to their cause. We took a light-hearted stroll through many different angles to do with speaking up, speaking out and standing up for what's right... as well as the cases when it might be little more than a wonderful distraction from the deep dark misery lurking in the depths of our soul.Who knows. Also, one of us experiences a mysterious backside condition, so don't miss that....___________________________________________________________________________Full episodes of With Joe Wehbe are available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Youtube and wherever you get your podcasts. Great TED Talks have been made about Imposter Syndrome. Some of the world’s most successful, high-performing people admit they’re still impacted by it. There are so many great and varying resources on how to overcome it. But can go a layer deeper?

What if Imposter Syndrome is a simpler phenomenon that we thought? What if it is useful, not as a sign of where we need to push harder, but where we’ve actually gone away from a place of living and achieving more naturally? What if it’s like a time-out in basketball — a sign to get us regrouping so we can get back to playing our way? In this short episode of With Joe Wehbe, we try to dig a little deeper into Imposter Syndrome, cross-referencing very learned and achieved people’s wisdom with our own personal, everyday experiences.

We reflect on the times where Imposter Syndrome has shown up, and where it hasn’t, and reflect on what that might mean for us. Hopefully this triggers your own thoughts and helps you explore ways of more permanently relieving this feeling, or dealing with it more effectively.

Just how important is community and connection to others? How much difference does access to a community or finding the ‘right’ people make?

Can the value be over-hyped? Are people concretely Introverted or Extroverted, or is there more to it? Why do some of us feel just as comfortable around people as we do alone for long periods of time?

We explore these questions in episode 281 of the With Joe Wehbe Podcast… having previously built a formal community and tapped into different kinds of communities, we cross-reference personal experience and observation with a lot of conventional wisdom and science to unpack this.

We also explore nuance like expectations, relief-seeking, healthy reliance on and relationships with others, and where we project personal challenges onto the need for community. Within the episode show notes / Youtube description there are also links to other podcast episodes and blog pieces I’ve written in the past with my views on this same topic, and some of the science or theories that formed old views about the importance and role of connection to others.

At long last, our first interview! This man has been mentioned many times before on the podcast, and has played a significant role in both our lives... Michael Gill did have a glittering career, as a lawyer, and in various other engagements, but to us he is cherished more as a source of wisdom, companionship and guidance. He is a man of vocation and dedication, a source of joy and community to all those he encounters. He listens but tries never to judge.

He thinks deeply, and often throws around words like 'Helicopter!', 'Interconnectedness,' 'Not bloody siloism!', 'Peace and Joy' and of course, 'Just Be.' He's always there for those who need him, and has a sharp and beautiful sense of humour.

Though he'll say this is no good for his ego, I must say, we consider him to be quite ahead of his time, and he defies almost every stereotype you'd associate with someone of his age and standing in society. Affectionately dubbed 'Gilly' by those close to him, we wanted to commemorate and capture some of his beautiful insights in an episode.

This is dedicated not just to our dear friend, but to the intimate group of Gilly's companions who cherish him as much as we do. Here is a man who plants the seeds.

Part 12 of 12, of Season 5: ‘The Myth of Failure an Re-framing of Risk.’ The conclusion to the series is another first-time idea, very Taleb-inspired, called ‘The Risk See-Saw’. It denotes that, trying to control for Small Risks creates big risks, but trying to avoid big risks makes us more sensitive to small risks… the theory is that most of us spend our entire lives worrying about exactly the opposite things we should be worrying about… and we end up creating them.

We hope you enjoyed the series. Thanks, and remember, keep opening Doors for others.

Part 11 of 12, of Season 5: ‘The Myth of Failure an Re-framing of Risk.’ The first time we’ve discussed ‘The U-Curve of Certainty’, a theory about nature, chance, risk, truth, predictions, generalisations and prescriptions, which helps us cut through the b.s. of life and wasteful planning. 265 episodes ago I began a podcast about sharing wisdom and help people avoid life's biggest mistakes.

I realised recently that I had been tracing the very path of those mistakes.

I had become the very thing I spoke about avoiding.

I had confused what I was meant to do for myself and others.

So, I'm taking a break from the podcast again. I will return in some way shape or form, firstly with my newsletter as writing is where things begin for me. You can get that here and my mission there will be to make you laugh, cry or unsubscribe each week.   https://thedoorman.substack.com/

How do you boost job security in difficult economic times? While we're at it, what's safer? Startups, corporate companies or being self-directed?   Today we unpack the options and possibilities with one key albeit simple message - don't be a commodity. We draw on examples and evidence from thinkers like actor Jim Carrey and author and thought leader Nassim Nicholas Taleb.

Sounds simple right? Remember, competence is the ultimate security - the problem is that most people look for things to be easy.   Check out more videos on the channel as lately we're unpacking money and concepts relating to it.

We're getting to the end of our series on legendary entrepreneur and investor Peter Thiel, and discussing the education solution he's driving. It's called 'The Thiel Fellowship', and it gives 20 young people each year $100,000 to quit college and work on their own ideas.

As a recap, we've been talking about Thiel since episode 195.

Welcome back to our mini-series on Peter Thiel's thoughts on education, career and learning. Today we begin one of two episodes unpacking his phenomenal 2014 book Zero to One which again, funnily enough, is about innovation and business rather than education.

So why are we unpacking it? Because this is the real world outcome that education should drive, not education for education's sake. Thiel has some golden ideas about business that go against the typical things you hear, and they really opened my mind a whole lot.

I also really recommend the actual book itself but the ideas are also unpacked in this corresponding blog post:

A bit of a tangent today but building on themes central to Peter Thiel, especially the concept of a monopoly – why a pernicious one now exists in education and how it constrains thinking, especially self-directed/independent thinking and the ability for people to think about alternatives.

Luke and Joe also talk about homeschooling models and why they're so often handicapped by the accreditation system, and why The Constant Student targets people who have already finished high school as a pose to younger children.

There is more specific unpacking of Peter Thiel again in tomorrow's episode.

Welcome to our third of eight episode on Peter Thiel's thoughts applied to learning, career and education. Quite a controversial one today linking college to an atheistic church... what's he getting at?

  1. There’s a priestly/professorial class that doesn’t do much
  2. You have to get a degree or you ‘go to hell’ — it’s your saving grace in this society.

My thoughts: Religion fills the huge void in secular society for values, ethics, spiritual and existential questions, how and why to live. Our social governance systems seem more concerned with economics and comfort.

Our next thought leader to review is Peter Thiel. Following on from our episodes on Nassim Taleb (181-194) the next modern thinker we're unpacking is PayPal Co-Founder Peter Thiel, the remarkable thinker, investor and contrarian.

He has some fascinating thoughts about education and innovation – in this first of eight episodes on Thiel (195-202) we unpack his ideas on 'what sort of product is education?' Thiel asks, is it an investment product? A consumption good? (Four year party)... an inflated insurance policy? OR... a crazy tournament.

Here Luke and Joe unpack it, and then be sure to come back again for tomorrow's next short, bite-sized episode on Thiel.

Episode #194 of the With Joe Wehbe Podcast wraps up the series on Nassim Taleb (181-194).

Don’t be overwhelmed — fine to go over it, I spent a month studying his book and I still had to leave stuff out of this mini-series!

  1. Big takeaway, think like an investor, not an academic. Risk-taking is more important than knowledge, will help you learn more, life is random and people overestimate their control and try to sound smart by making all sorts of predictions. No one knows anyting on a specific level, but we can be sure of overarching things — if you have good principles you do well. Investors also are more about their judgement (remember the Green Lumber Fallacy)
  2. Everyone should be entrepreneurial, but not everyone should be an entrepreneur
  3. You’re taught things because they’re easy not because they’re the best things to learn, you go with the current of society because it’s easier than creating your own path, you go with the predictions of the interventionists because it’s easier than standing up for what you believe in and having your own opinion.
  4. There are a lot of things that can make up for a ‘lack of intelligence’

Coming Up

  • Series on Peter Thiel, Then Alan Watts and Naval Ravikant

Never heard of the term ‘optionality’? Don’t worry, few people have, but I argue it’s one of the most applicable of Nassim Taleb’s ideas to career, especially unconventional careers.

We do a full deconstruction in this episode and I give Luke examples on how to implement it. It’s particularly powerful because, as Taleb says, it overcomes the need for intelligence, smarts, cognitive ability ‘and all these other things happening in our brains cells’.

Also, you’ll be blown away by the list of innovations in this episode that came about due to almost total randomness!

Nassim Nicholas Taleb suspects that if it hadn't been for the Titanic, we would have continued to build bigger and bigger boats until meeting an even bigger disaster. It's a frequent shortcoming in our thinking – we fail to see what adversity and setbacks i) help us avoid but ii) help us improve on.

How is this relevant to you? Why should you be a taxi driver and not a banker? Find out in today's episode.

Nassim Taleb is a noteworthy writer and thinker. He explores ideas like uncertainty, randomness and risk... and over the next few episodes, we’re going to apply these ideas to learning, education and career.

Today, we kick off a conversation with Luke about why Taleb is important, and what the hell risk and uncertainty have to do with helping us unlock our inner Da Vinci... what Taleb gives is a fundamentally different story about ‘success’, and I’m excited to dive into it using powerful ideas from his book Antifragile.

Is there a Da Vinci in everyone?

  • We are naturally creative and multi-potentialite
  • This has been locked — gift of Da Vinci’s time in Florence was broad self-expression. Da Vinci today would have been an outcast
  • Somewhat ‘impulsive’ and ‘unproductive’
  • The real pursuit is wisdom
  • Creative contribution comes from freedom

Common pitfalls

  • Overcome by ego and seek status
  • Zoom in on our goals and lose perspective
  • Come from a place of calm, and my philosophy for life comes from here. There is no acceptable state for putting off living now, if we love the process.

Happy New Year! To celebrate the start of 2022, I wanted to kick off with a few special types of episodes.

Top 5 Lines of Wisdom that have influenced me:

5 — 'You might want to think about whether you want a life to envy or a life to admire.' — Jim Collins

4 — Viktor Frankl on self transcendence “The more one forgets himself--by giving himself to a cause to serve or another person to love--the more human he is and the more he actualizes himself. What is called self-actualization is not an attainable aim at all, for the simple reason that the more one would strive for it, the more he would miss it. In other words, self-actualization is possible only as a side-effect of self-transcendence.”

3 — Buckminster Fuller "the search for the principles governing the universe and help advance the evolution of humanity in accordance with them ... finding ways of doing more with less to the end that all people everywhere can have more and more"

2 — ‘Focus on what you have, you'll gain what you lack. Focus on what you lack, you'll lose what you have’ — Greg McKeown

1 — ‘I only do what only I can do’ — Jack Delosa

BONUS

Some men see things as they are and ask, ""Why?"" I dream things that never were and ask, ""Why not?"" — George Bernard Shaw

Notes:

  1. The lesson I learnt from Scott McKeon
  2. Where to go to meet future co-founders and business partners
  3. How to treat someone else's organisation as your own 'launchpad' or opportunity-rich environment
  4. Most people struggle to understand these concepts around journeying
  5. Two questions around, where are you finding the people? And, how can the things you're doing now act as an ecosystem?

  • Chris Dixon wrote a piece around how the next big thing will look like a toy. Think about the internet, cryptocurrencies, gaming, TikTok, Youtube used to be cat videos
  • This is what we normally do. In the movies like Bend It Like Beckham the conservative parent can't wrap their head around the changes in the next generation. From their worldview, it makes no sense, they are being irresponsible with their lives
  • The Fourth Turning by Neil Howe and William Strauss unpacks the four different generational archetypes we cycle through, each lasts about 20 years meaning the four turnings reset every 80 years or so.
  • We can crush the generation by insisting they jump through old hoops or stay with what fits with the cultural narrative
  • HIgh Jump Metaphor
  • In episode 168, we talked about how education caters least towards these people, the young who drive innovation
  • Lesson from yesterday is, university is not for everyone. For some people, it will slow them down, the most proactive, artistic and entrepreneurial

I discuss an initiative we've run within The Constant Student (www.constantstudent.com.au) – The resource I mentioned will be available for subscribers at https://withjoewehbe.com/everything-joe/

What just happened?

  • Unstructured play... but what if people just do nothing? Don't they have to be forced to a certain extent?
  • People always move the needle. Think about culture and it's impact
  • If you make it people-centric... how good would it be!?
  • Example of Mastermind.

What's coming up?

(See yesterday's episode for more context) Without-The-Box Thinking: https://withjoewehbe.com/2020/06/07/thinking-without-the-box/

Three Questions to unpack Without-The-Box Thinking

  1. Why is the box there to begin with? (E.g. School, Industrial Revolution and indoctrination)
  2. Who put it there, and why? (E.g. religions, industrialists)
  3. Should it still be there?

Another example is the office.

The value of history in learning, by understanding how something came to be, giving you an insight into its fundamentals.

End of Season One!

  • Listening to the Podcast is not a substitute for partaking in the journey.
  • I have not given you a full map of human understanding, but an indication of how complex it is, and why you should go deep into this.
  • Idea of the Constant Student is our way of trying to make it a bit easier to squeeze a bit of randomness into your life. Let me not mince my words or be squeamish. If not this, what are you doing. Where is the current direction of your life heading.
  • Talk about 18 & Lost experience with Authors… this is what I want for all of you. The concepts I talk about are not the journey, they are the bowling lanes and the prompts to build your thinking so you stay more aligned. Astro the Dog, the Pleasure Treadmill, the Happiness Curve, the Apocalypse Test, The Bucket, The Minimum Viable Lifestyle, and all the others, especially the Thousand Doors.
  • The ‘Sabbath’. Most people are too zoomed in.
  • Next is learning. Learning in a way you’ve never thought of it before. But many ways of restructuring the podcast that I’m contemplating, and I want to spend time refining the ideas.
  • Here is the Door (Constant Student) - this is everything I can offer you right now. And if you refuse the Door you’re meant to go through, it will come back to you.
  • The Rising Tide Lifts All boats.
