Not even believers have stability in this world. We have permanent forgiveness from God through Jesus
Speculation results in fog, uncertainty, futility. Facts are clear, result in confidence, perseverance and fruit.
Jesus presents Himself as the King of Israel fulfilling Scripture, covenant, prophecy, and no one gets it.
Sin is worse than you can ever fix, and someone is willing to take responsibility for you so you will never die.
Jesus gives ten men back their lives, only one realises that Jesus is greater than his life.
You believe in Jesus, you have real faith. Now take that tiny beginning and live your whole life like that.
Can you ignore the word of God and live? No. Jesus takes scoffers on a trip to the place of the dead to prove it.
The Father gives life and loves His children. If that means nothing to you, you are lost.
Why would you turn down the invitation of a lifetime? Because you're convinced you know what you're doing.
Jesus keeps His eyes on pleasing the Father because that leads directly to the resurrection.
Rather than divorce His wayward nation, God brings her into the wilderness to give her a door of hope and a betrothal forever.
God's promises are great; greater still is their fulfilment, and that begins at Christmas.
The devil doesn't want to get his head crushed by the Coming One. He's doing all he can to oppose it.
Who is the Coming One who will save man? Here's how we know he's the most important human being ever born.
Christmas is important because it fulfils promises, covenants, and prophecies that God made to give hope. We need hope because He made everything perfect and one man ruined it.
It’s possible to resist God because you don’t recognise Him. Realise who you are fighting against, and let Him bless you.

It’s natural to think that God is like us, only better. But we don’t expect God to be good to us. Jesus isn’t helpless, He is good to us beyond our knowledge.
The point of the Sermon on the Plain is Jesus wants His disciples to base their lives fully upon Him.
Following Jesus is more than trying to be nice. You receive eternal life, and you love your enemies, like God.
A true disciple receives the only true comfort that overcomes all the suffering in this life.
Fretting is no help, because the righteous and the wicked have different inheritances & judgment
Jesus experienced really bad opposition as He served the Father. Because Jesus is human He prays. And God gives Him orders and the strength to do them.
Jesus divides the world into humble and arrogant, those being saved and those being condemned for rejecting Jesus. You can’t believe in Jesus if you’re arrogant.
If you get the gospel wrong it can’t save you; it’s no longer good news and it has no power. If you get the gospel wrong you’re working against Christ. Fortunately Jesus gets the gospel right.
God works in history. Jesus' return will be historical. We can't set times but we must know the signs and be ready now.
In Psalm 125 God reveals that He covers you completely, in all ways. You are secure in Him.
Ahaz didn't understand how a baby could make any difference in his crisis because he wasn't listening. Immanuel (God-With-Us) is the sign that God is for us.
If peace is the enemy then there can't be co-existence. Only God can make lasting peace.
Something more important than "How will I make it today?" is, "Where am I going when I die?"

Jesus presents Himself as the Messiah by the Scriptures because He originally spoke those words.
We look at the extreme, unstoppable, irresistible zeal of God which is in Jesus, the Servant of God. In zeal He will surely defy the devil to accomplish eternal salvation.
The most important thing in life is not what people think of you but what God thinks of you.
The Lord is coming to save His people but they’re not ready for Him. They are already prepared for shame and everlasting contempt. So God prepares His people to receive Him by humbling them.
You expect devotion in old saints who battle themselves and discipline themselves for holiness. You don’t expect in a twelve-year-old boy. That absolute devotion will cost Him everything and also save you and me.
The Messiah is born of a humble mother, in a nowhere place. God announces His birth to lowly, humble men by angels, but He de-emphasises their glory. It's all about the humility of God.
God uses the occasion of naming a baby to begin a new tradition, of Him being close and blessing continually.
Two women, not gifted, powerful, rich, or famous. They're humble and lowly. Yet they have what everyone would love to have, because God is directly touching their lives.

When you sow a seed it results in multiplying what you sowed. David sowed a sin that multiplied its effect in his life and his families’ lives. We don't have to experience this wreckage. God's way has no death in it, only life and peace.
A single-minded person has an advantage over a double-minded person: He has clarity, confidence, and understanding. And Jesus is the only One who can free from doubt, fear, and ignorance.
Believers in Jesus do not fight flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces of wickedness. Therefore we have to resist in a spiritual way, understanding strategies and growing in our relationship with the Holy Spirit.
Instead of reading the Bible and feeling like it went right through you, you can put that living word in your heart, where it will deal with your doubts, fears, and ignorance.
Difficulties, discouragement, and suffering make you think, “This isn’t working. I can’t keep going. I quit. Who cares?” When you engage with God’s word you engage with God, and He gives you what you need through His word.
Endurance overcomes exhaustion, discouragement, and all difficulties that we face, until we receive what God has promised.
It’s possible that after a long journey, bureaucratic hassles, no accommodation, and sudden delivery of a baby that Joseph and Mary were at a low point. God lets them know gently that He is in their situation. That changes everything. Has God ever done that with you?
When you just show up without warning people are surprised, shocked, and not receptive. The first Christmas begins with God preparing the forerunner’s father because he isn’t ready! But because God wants to bless him, He prepares him.
Christmas is the critical point in time when the future promises of God become present reality. But if you don’t realise how significant something is, you’re likely to lose it.
This chapter is not about God killing David in justice. It’s about God restoring David in grace.
Gross sin starts small, but significantly, when a heart turns away from being satisfied by God, looks somewhere else for satisfaction and, worst of all, finds it.
David and Israel fought and won because they knew what they were fighting for. The other guys lacked conviction. So hold on to your convictions and fight the good fight of faith in order to win.
The unexpected becomes reality not because of anything in the man, but because of a covenant made before he was born.
God has a purpose for David to do in his part of the plan of the ages. That means God allows David to do some things and doesn’t allow him to do others. But if David fulfils the purpose for which God made him, that’s enough.
David is enjoying the sense of everything going great. Except one thing bugs him, God is in this temporary situation. Can’t we do something about this? God says to David, “I’m way ahead of you. I’m working on making you permanent.”
David is bringing the presence of God into the very centre of Israeli life but when God reacts to his ignorance he is shocked, angry, fearful, unwilling, just like an unbeliever.
Today we see a milestone in the history of the world. David is made king of Israel. He is blessed by God, helped by God to be king for the benefit of God’s people. But we also see a strange ignorance of God that carries with it seeds of destruction.
The result of repentance is forgiveness, for you first, and then you turn around and pass on that forgiveness to everyone else around you.
This chapter is written is so that you would want to live in that miracle of peaceful government, that doesn’t come as a result of selfish ambition but from a heart sensitive to the Lord.
A young man is self-serving, ambitious, not averse to altering the truth if it enhances his position. He brings news to David that he assumes is welcome and worthy of a generous reward. His ignorance of David costs him his life.
When you travel your goal is to stay on the right road and avoid the roads that don’t go to your goal. Here in Psalm 119 you have a road map for your journey.
A sheep has to have a shepherd and stay close to him and listen to him. If you wander away from your shepherd you will die. That’s the law of the jungle.
This grip on God keeps him from doing desperate and stupid things. So David’s highest priority is keeping his grip on God.
It looks like a better bet is to try to save your life. Conserve what you have and try to make it last. But until when? In reality we’re going to die. We need to be freed from the fear of death.
. In fact, he hasn’t stopped expecting God to fulfill His promise to make him king over Israel. He does have to wait, but he’s making the best of having to wait.
Can you be safe from this? Only if you find some way of not drifting. You need some kind of anchor for your soul. What God has made for us is living anchors called roots.
You live in the secret place according to God’s principles so that when you get the chance to do anything the way you want, you actually want to do things God’s way. The result is miraculous.
Today we get to see people failing David, betraying and attacking him, and yet God is teaching him and encouraging him to live in the secret place with God.
God in effect says, “King Saul is killing innocent men under him, but I want you to be like Me; I want you to give these losers life.”
The most amazing, I think, is He overcomes unwillingness and stubbornness, and pride, to make us believers.
Outwardly the death of Jesus doesn't look like the salvation it is. Isaiah supplies the significance seven centuries before it happened.
Why would we do something so depressing? Because you are doing the same thing and God doesn’t want you to lose everything valuable to you. He just wants you to lose your worst enemy: you.
This is a practical demonstration of what it says in Zechariah 4:6 Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the LORD of hosts.
We see God working in a complicated, roundabout way to call Saul. God reveals His man sovereignly, with power and confirmations so that the king himself will know: “I am God’s man. I am responsible to God first.”
He also lived to see Israel walk away from all that they learned to go back into darkness and misery.
You need a mediator to get you back into relationship with God. After that, nothing is impossible for God.
A relationship with God supplies everything good in life, therefore, our first priority is to maintain our relationship with God.
Though this world is dangerous to those who seek the Lord, He protects and gives peace.
What is possible is to receive the word of the Lord and be highly favoured by God. To be blessed by God is better than to be happy.
Fortunately for us God is really into Christmas. His big project is making lasting peace on earth. What motivates Him is the zeal of love.
He’s going to establish a new normal that is full of His life, His light, His blessing. He does that by revealing His word to a boy.
The priests are so far gone that they can’t be revived. They are not listening to God, therefore they disobey God. They are ripe for judgment.
In this case God works through a helpless woman stuck in a loop of misery. He shows us how He prevails through her by humbling her greatly, and then giving the humble grace. Are you interested in this?
“Ready” means that you are found the way Jesus wants, and that you affect others around you as well.
Jesus has a simpler detector: look at their lives. If they are right, they will live right. If they are wrong, they will live wrong.
Peter wants his readers to be have abundant entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ.
If you accept a counterfeit salvation you are in the greatest danger. You trust that you are being saved but in reality you are being deceived. A counterfeit salvation will destroy you forever.
But is this kingdom true? Or is it a fairytale? Peter testifies: I saw Jesus, I heard God, Jesus confirms the prophetic word to be more sure.
He’s making an effort so we make an effort. He’s giving us reasons to be excited about entering the eternal kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ right now.
Here’s something liberating, exciting, relieving: being a Christian does not depend on your ability, it depends on Jesus Himself living in you.
Peter is concerned that his readers be able to remember—to call to mind what they already know—so that they keep growing, they stay protected from lies, and be ready when Jesus returns.
In the real world real stuff happens. You’re lost and you run out of food and water. You’re a prisoner in a death camp. You’re in hundred-foot waves on a God- forsaken ocean. You face real problems and you need real solutions. Can God deal with real life?
The devil is going to do his very best to consume you. But you can resist the devil, because God has everything you need, that is, God Himself.
Jesus tells us that all authority is given to him. Daniel 7:9-14 is another example how God’s word is consistent and true foreseeing Jesus’ promise more than 500 years before it was spoken by Him, seamlessly running from the old to the New Testament.
Because we believe this we want to live in a way that pleases God,to be made like the Lord Jesus Christ so that we live like Him. It means submitting ourselves completely to His grace, His favour, His kindness to us in Jesus.
God has help for you, a person who takes Jesus extremely seriously, so as you watch him, you take Jesus seriously, and you inherit eternal life. God gives him to you as a gift. So you need him. He is a pastor.
How you become strong and secure is to put on Christ. Put on His death, put on His resurrection.
Jesus is the example of how to get safely through this fallen, wicked world. That is, it’s all humility now, glory comes later.
There’s a simple answer that we will look at today: it’s not possible to have a nice quiet life in this world. The better question is, Where do we want to be in 10,000 years?
In the beginning God made marriage to reveal Himself in this world. You have three people all submitting to one another and loving one another. That is, a husband, a wife, and God. Three in one. That is who God is.
Peter commands us to silence the ignorance of foolish men. Not by clever arguments. Not by might, nor by power, but by the Spirit of God.
So today we look at the supreme value of Christ, and at those who have got Christ totally wrong.
We began our lives in Christ by receiving the word of God. And we will grow and be perfected only by continuing to receive the word of God.
I had a neighbour that had just this problem with Jesus. We would have good conversations about what was happening in the world, particularly with the lockdown. Then it would always come around to Jesus. He would say, "Why Jesus? Why can't people love one another without Jesus.?" can't there be some other way? Can't there be some other philosophy, some other political way, some other religion? Why does it have to be Jesus?
Peter commands us to hope, to be holy, to fear God, in order to lay hold of life eternal.
By the evening time that had all turned around. In one day they became excited about the future. They had a clearer understanding. They saw everything that happened in the proper context in order to rightly understand what was going on. They had hope.
Because God is powerful, compassionate, and detail- oriented, He also cares about working out His salvation in our lives.
We think following Jesus is something that we do. Peter says we follow Jesus because of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Here in Psalm 104 the psalmist meditates on Scripture and what he sees in nature, and he increases his grasp of God’s glory, wisdom, power, and judgment. The meaning is that you live in God’s world.
People think of prayer like it was magic, and because they think like that they are disappointed.
Magic is predictable, works every time. Every time Frodo puts that ring on his finger, he disappears. People think prayer ought to work predictably and they are disappointed. I prayed and it didn’t happen.
As disciples we are learning skills. The biggest skill we are learning is how to live for Jesus. That will lead us to living radically, because Jesus is not like us. He’s way beyond us, and in comparison we are backwards to Him.
We have a real problem in evaluating things today because we have such different points of view. The rich and powerful and maybe even some Christians would say that James is crazy. He’s got his values all mixed up.
And you know that discipline is painful at the start, and in the end it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness.
What doesn’t help is that we are convinced we know where it is, and we are wrong. Instead what we pursue makes conflict, while we sincerely work for happiness.
No parent wants to see their children live foolishly, make bad decisions, not be able to see potential dangers and snares. So our Father in heaven is going to teach us to be wise.
We are going to look at a day in the life of a man who lived to see the fulfilment of God’s promise. God said to him, “Do you see? There is the fulfilment.”
Our hearts are desperately wicked and it comes out in the way we talk, to family, to friends, to people, to ourselves. If you don’t believe that, today James will make you a believer.
The faith that saves is not easy because it makes demands on your life to respond in a visible, useful, costly way. Anything less is invisible, powerless, insensitive, dead.
In contrast to a world full of treacherous dealers, Jesus makes the laws, and He keeps them, faithfully. Treacherous dealing brings death. Only Jesus gives life.
Church is different from any human institution on the planet, or should be.
It is a direct, visible, testimony to the existence of God.
Just as we started with Jesus, we want to keep on going until we are perfected and glorified. We want to declare war on our natural laziness.
James is writing to Christians right at the beginning of Christianity. And he begins writing to them about suffering and trusting in God.
They didn’t like suffering in the first century. We don’t like it any better in the 21st century.
James is a daunting book. It’s so practical. And therein lies the rub. We are prone to live below what we can and should live like as Christians.
Everyone has to start at the beginning. You have to have a start point for your life, so you know where you are, which end is up. It’s your orientation point: you are here, here is everything else.
Peter felt like he’d totally failed Jesus. He probably asked himself a question over and over again: now that Jesus is alive from the dead, why would He put up with a total failure like me?
So Peter wants to do Jesus a favour and quit.
n John 20 we are shown what happened after the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. With virtually every other person the biography ends there with the person’s death. You will be shown sometimes what’s happened after that person’s death, but that person who died is done.
But death is not the end of Jesus.
The Scriptures testify that Jesus is the Son of God. Especially they testify in His crucifixion. In this one account in John there are seven prophecies fulfilled. Some of these are two-part prophecies, fulfilled at different times, sometimes far apart.
For many people life is becoming darker and harder to bear. They can only imagine what is going to happen, and all that dystopian science fiction doesn’t help things. They can imagine the worst. But they’re not even close to how bad it’s going to be.
I want to share a number of things I learned in my regular meditation.
The fear of dying makes a person a slave to the control of another who promises life.
The fallacy to this is that we are going to die anyway. No one can keep us alive, but we can choose which way we die.
We might find this wearying, like Pilate, who finally asks, what is truth? Then he walks away, without waiting for an answer. But today we will see that to live rightly we need absolute truth in our lives.
When you see Jesus being arrested and tried and crucified you marvel at His presence of mind. That is the only word for it.
It means self-control so maintained in an emergency or embarrassing situation, that one can say or do the right thing. That’s the best word for it. Jesus has presence of mind here in these next chapters of John.
When you see Peter during this same time you see him making mistake after mistake. He wants to follow Jesus with all his heart, but that’s not enough and he is intimidated and crumbles in fear.
Jesus’ request is for His disciples to be with Him where He is and to see His glory.
This will affect the whole world for the next twenty centuries because people will be able to grasp what is the whole point of existence: to be united into the family of the Father in love.
Wouldn’t it be nice if, as soon as you receive Jesus as your Lord and Saviour, you went straight to heaven? No more hassles. Be with God.
But it sure doesn’t work that way, does it? We still have to live in this world. And we find that we have changed, and we can’t live like we used to. But then we aren’t so good at being holy, either.
How do we live rightly in a toxic environment?
On the last night of His life Jesus is concerned that His disciples be able to live after His departure.
This is eternal life, on earth.
The problem with this, is this world is a toxic environment. It doesn’t give life, it takes life. So Jesus prays that the Father keeps His disciples in His name.
We say, really? That’s what I need to live eternal life? What’s important about His name?
This morning we address one of the biggest problems there is in the world today. Everybody struggles with it, even Christians, even pastors, even every single person in the world. It doesn’t matter if you believe in Jesus or not, everyone has a problem in this area. Everyone suffers alike.
Does God love me? We all know, yes, God loves me. But it makes no difference in our lives. That’s because to know the love of God you have to experience it.
That is what Jesus is praying for today.
Jesus’ disciples think they’re finally ready for anything to happen. But Jesus knows better. He’s been trying to warn them. But what’s going to happen will take them by surprise and shock them so that they will hardly be able to function.
What they really need is peace that will keep them while suffering emotionally and physically.
So how do you get that?
We face a lot of crises nowadays. World epidemic, economic crunch, fake news, racism, polarisation such that people cannot agree to disagree. There is conflict and tension. What would you think is the worst crisis we face?
None of these things.
Peace, love, joy, abiding in Christ. Conflict.
What? Somebody, somewhere, is going to have a real problem with you following Christ.
The result of sin is that we naturally have no relationship with God. The increasing trend in this world is like it says in Psalm 2: “Let us break Their bonds in pieces and cast away Their cords from us.” That’s a good idea! Who needs the slavery and confinement to obey an arbitrary tyrant?
The problem with that is when we have no bond with God we don’t have bonds with those around us. We want loyalty, we want commitment, and trust.
“Here’s the way to live life to the fullest: find what it is that moves you, and embrace it, join yourself to it, and pursue it to the fullest. That’s how you find satisfaction, that’s how you find meaning, that’s how you find life.”
That statement is wrong. Do you know why?
Jesus is leaving, the disciples are gutted. Jesus is telling them things hard to process. He said He wouldn’t leave them as orphans, but still, they are upset. Jesus knows worse things are coming. Life is going to go upside-down. It’s going to look completely out of control. Jesus is an encourager, and He will encourage His disciples with the Holy Spirit and with the truth.
It is the last night of Jesus’ life. Rather than being depressed or anxious He is talking to His disciples about how things are going to continue. He will continue to work in the world, but it’s in a new way. The world won’t see Him directly, but they will see Him in His disciples.
For this to happen they need help. And Jesus has help all arranged, the fulfilment of the Father’s promise.
Whenever you practice a skill, a sport, an instrument, you generally find you get better. The early days are rough, but if you stick to it and work hard, you find you get better at it. You develop proficiency and a depth of experience that sets you apart. I’m an expert. No brag, just fact.
It doesn’t work like that in Christianity.
Do you know what’s going to happen to you after you die? That’s more important than staying alive because you know you can’t live here forever.
It’s especially important to know where you’re going when you die if you know you are a failure. Where do failures go when they die?
The good news is that we can know where we go when we die.
Jesus gave a new commandment to His disciples. Love one another, even as I have loved you. That extends to laying down one’s life for one’s friends.
It’s common to think two things about love. One is, love, I can do that, I’m cool with that. Two, love everybody? That’s unreasonable. He’s asking too much.
The problem is that we underestimate what love is, and we overestimate ourselves.
Christianity is about getting saved. What are we saved from?
One danger is the wrath of God. Jesus saves by taking the wrath of God upon Himself. If we don’t receive Jesus, we are guilty before God and there is nothing we can do to save ourselves from His righteous wrath against sin.
Another danger to be saved from is the domination of Satan. He has the whole world lying in his grasp. Jesus said now is the ruler of this world cast out. But what if we don’t receive Jesus to save us?
