Happy holidays, everyone! Today I'll be reviewing the Heartstopper graphic novel series by Alice Oseman. This is a YA series, so some mature topics will be discussed during this episode. I really love the Heartstopper series, and I asked for the Heartstopper Yearbook for Christmas, so I really hope I'm able to read that one soon. The Heartstopper series follows Charlie and Nick, two boys who are completely different but somehow make a connection. They go from classmates to best friends to boyfriends. This is such a warm and cozy series, although there are some more difficult topics discussed in the later books. The second book in this series is probably my favorite graphic novel ever, so I highly suggest reading the Heartstopper books. I love this novel so much and I highly recommend it. When Mary Kate joins a special science class in 8th grade, she realizes so many climate struggles in the world around her. So many kids waste food at lunch. Lots of people buy new clothes that they never wear. Parents leave their cars running in the parking lot all the time. The worst part of all, though, is that the mayor won't listen to anyone about climate change! He seems to think the city is fine the way it is. 40th OFFICIAL EPISODE CELEBRATION! Today I’ll be reviewing Spin with Me by Ami Polonsky. I loved this novel and I’m so glad I get to share it with you. I’ve been wanting to read Spin with Me for so long and I finally checked it out from the library! Essie and Ollie meet in their school. Essie has just moved to North Carolina and is not happy about it. But when she meets Ollie, she feels a sudden spark. Maybe her stay won’t be so bad after all… Ollie is confident as themself. They even started a club at school for LGBTQIAP+ kids! But they are both struggling with their own issues, and Essie has no clue who she is anymore! Hey! Today I’m reviewing The Losers Club by Andrew Clements. This is one of my favorite books written by him and it’s a perfect school story. Alec is a reader. He’s always been a reader. The funny thing is, while most teachers love it when people read, Alec’s teachers send him to the principal’s office because he reads too much. Alec starts a club in the Extended Day program for kids like him who just want to read. He calls it The Losers Club, because no one would want to join a club with a name like that, right? Hello listeners! Today I'm reviewing A Soft Place to Land by Janae Marks, the author of a great middle grade read From the Desk of Zoe Washington. If you listened to/watched my video episode, you'll know that I recently got A Soft Place to Land from the library. It's such an engaging book that I read it all in one day! Joy Taylor misses a lot of things. She misses her piano lessons. She misses the thick wall of her old bedroom. But mostly, she misses her old house. After Joy's father gets fired from his job, Joy and her family have to move to an apartment across town. Joy has to start at a new school, and she's worried she won't make any friends. With some friendly neighbors like Mae, Ziggy, and Nora, Joy starts to fit in and become friends with a group of 4: Nora, Elena, Oliver, and Miles. They even show her a secret room in the apartment that only kids know about! But between juggling her increasing worries about her parents getting divorced, her new job dog walking with Nora, and writing to the secret person in the Hideout, Joy fears everything might fall apart. Today I am reviewing Both can be True by Jules Machias. They did a phenomenal job with this novel; I truly loved it. Ash is a gender fluid middle schooler, which makes school extra hard for them. Just walking into the bathroom is a huge decision for them, when they know they’ll never be able to fully commit to one gender. Meanwhile, Daniel is struggling to hide his feelings in front of everyone. He knows he’s overly sensitive and he knows most boys aren’t like this. All the Answers follows Ava Anderson, a seventh grader struggling with anxiety and other pre-teen problems. When Ava finds a magic pencil in her family's junk drawer, she thinks that all her problems are solved. I mean, the pencil tells her everything! Now she knows that Jason has a crush on her best friend Sophie, and that her grandpa's favorite kind of music is jazz. But Ava can't predict the troubles the pencil would lead her to. Hello everyone! Today I'm reviewing Other Words for Home by Jasmine Warga, and let me tell you, this is an amazing book! We recently had a unit in social studies where we learned about different religions in the Middle East, and I was instantly reminded of the book Other Words for Home. It's about a young Syrian refugee named Jude, who moves to America with her pregnant mother. She has to leave her father and her brother behind and move in with her aunt, uncle, and not-so-friendly cousin. No one in America seems to understand her, except for the kids in her ESL class and the owners of the Middle Eastern restaurant in town. Jude has to constantly explain to people that wearing a hijab is a choice and that she didn't enter the US illegally. Everything is so difficult for Jude, especially after a super racist action that has her thinking that no one wants her in the US. Breakout follows Nora Tucker who lives in a teeny weeny town, Wolf Creek. Nora expects her summer to be pretty boring because nothing ever happens in Wolf Creek. Like, ever. PLOT TWIST! Dress Coded is about an 8th grader, Molly Frost, who starts a podcast after her friend gets dress coded for wearing a tank top. Crazy, right? Molly and her friends work to stop the dress coding, but it's hard, especially since Molly is caught up in her own drama at home. Honestly, middle school is hard enough. Bea is not happy about this, especially since her new neighbor, Aileyanna, is a soccer star with a great left foot, and her new brother, Bryce, is a bully follower. Bea and Aileyanna are only a few girls away from forming an all girls soccer team at their school! Mia is so excited when her parents take a job managing the Calivista Motel. Mia gets to manage the Front Desk! Aidan says that he was in a magical world called Aveinieu, and he got there through a dresser! Lucas isn't sure what to believe. I love this book a lot. I read it in one day! It's a great mystery. It follows a girl named Miranda who receives mysterious notes from someone who seems to know the future! And if it's true, Miranda needs to prevent a horrible accident that involves her (former) best friend. What will Miranda do? This book is told from Miranda's point of view, but sometimes, she talks directly to the person who sent her notes, using the pronoun "you". This book mixes science fiction with mystery.
