My favorite people to talk to are the ones that “make it happen “ regardless of fear and what challenges and obstacles are ahead of them . Kayla Cruz is just that type of person I say that because In the middle of a successful career in real estate and design she decides to follow her heart’s passion for art by quitting her job one day and going all in on HERSELF the next day as a full time professional artist . If that’s not following passion idk what is since then she has continued to thrive through art all on her own by committing herself to commissions and growing her skill base. The best part about being a writer from the street and curator in a gallery is the network I have to choose from. When I challenge graff writers to make gallery quality work and they deliver it’s a different kind of special. DYOS is a prime example of that already a dope and talented artist but to see the gallery work he produced is amazing. No lie I’m a bit jealous lol this is DYOS story in his own words
my favorite thing about this podcast is the people I talk to . The story of who they are and what they do . Sometimes I get a similar story from two different people . When that happens I try my best to get them in the same room and see if they are willing to work together.This is exactly what happened with Celina & Alexi not only did they know of one another they were fans of one another. Hanging art in the same room quickly lead to conversation about an installation and five days later it was all a reality . Special people have always been a result of the graff game in Sacramento California but once in a while you meet someone that is truly extraordinarily special. The story of friendship and fellowship is a big part of Joshua’s story in this first episode with me hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did .
It’s so dope to sit down and have a conversation with other podcasts host that I’m a fan of and get the behind the scenes story of how their podcast started. Sheilah and sierra started the blue blocks podcast to highlight the businesses and special people on the Del Paso Blvd . I personally know how rewarding and challenging it is to highlight people from our community and maintain a high quality podcast and juggle all the regular life stuff and because of that I wanted to give them their flowers on air and remind them that the work they do has value.
Ever since I was a young warthog I would see “Aztec dancers “ and b amazed by the regalia and the collective movement to the beat of a live drum . In this episode Natalia breaks down the purpose and a bit of history on the ceremony and brings us up to date with her involvement in the Washington center.
I didn’t prep like normal for with this artist because I was already a big fan of and a member of her journey I ask only one question “why do you make art” her response was honest and without hesitation . I love that we could just talk without the fear of judgement or repercussions and that lead to a very productive conversation for this episode that I hope you can all appreciate.
Kiley secoy is definitely a one of a kind person. So much compassion and kindness and wisdom wrap up in tattoos and muscle’s I definitely didn’t think “business coach “ when I seen her lol. After talking to her for 60 seconds I thought OHHH this is a one of a kind business coach my bad lol. Joshua’s story is truly one of a kind growing up in California writing graffiti with his friends and experiencing everything that comes along with that life style. To opening a gallery space for artists to come and make their dreams come true . Childhood friends Wes and Jeff use to make short film with whatever they could get their hands on as young warthogs growing up in the late 1900s . Back when you had to b kind and rewind your VHS tapes before you took them back to blockbuster on Tuesday. Back when you had to WAIT for your favorite show to come on because streaming wasn’t a “thing”. Fast forward to 2023 and you can see them doing the same thing as adults with taxable incomes and no parental supervision to stop them from accomplishing a life long dream of writing,filming,editing, and self funding their latest project PILLOW MAN . I have had the pleasure of sitting down with a few photographers and getting a chance to learn what their process is this is important to me because it gives context to the visuals they produce I call this process finding the “why” . Melissa’s “why” we extract special to me because it made so much sense considering her journey as a creative up until this point. This episode is powerful . I'm a father of two young boys and I can't help but think of my kids as Carlos tells the story of how he was abused as a toddler. I usually am able to keep my wits about me in an episode regardless of people say. But this one was different for me idk if you can or can't tell on the episode but it fucked me up. Even on the way home. With that being said my respect for Carlos grew because of the man/husband and father he is today and hope that clear to everyone that knows him personally 👊🏼🙏🏼

My father once asked me "what makes a journey man"? I said time and experience he just grins and said "yeah " we laughed out loud, finished our beers and went back to work. I learned to spot the real badass in the shop after that by the way they carried themselves and how they talk about the craft. The power of people truly inspiring one another is always amazing to me! In this episode, featuring Manuel Fernando Rios, I got a bit of extra special amazement because of who inspired him (Ricardo favela). The more I experience the impact the members of the Royal Chicano Air Force have on their students and the people around them, the less surprised I am when amazingly dope things happen as a result of their work in the community. They truly inspired a generation of teachers and leaders of all kinds. In 2023, Manuel is one of those leaders who carries on the legacy with work in the art community.

I once herd about a dude (Leon Willis)that did so much graffiti in midtown Sacramento that the city made it a condition of his probation to not b allowed in midtown until his time was served. The sac Graff scene in the 90s was truly different from the Graff scene today. Once in a while I meet someone from that time period and get a bit more of the story . What really blows me away tho is what these people do with the love for graff and how they make something out of it. This episode is about LEON WILLIS who he is ,what he does and more importantly why he does it . I consider him a ture graffiti king not because he was a big time vandal but because he never gave up on Graff no matter what the sacrifice was and after all that found a positive way to promote the culture in a new and exciting way to the next generation

When I meet special people i ask myself how did they get "here" aka what's their story? What lead them to This place and time in life and why did our paths cross right now? When this happens I slow down and take a second to try and get to know a bit about them and their intentions. This episode is the story of Jennah & Robert whitcanack founders and owner of The medium tattoo and gallery. Their journey begins as first time employees in a tattoo shop outside of Sacramento as young adults from two different "walks of life" he's a punk rock skater dude taking life one day at a time and she in college looking to build a successful future for herself... This is all I'm going to tell you for now because in the episode they do a great job of telling their story in their own words!
After a High speed police chase in a stolen car on meth it's safe to say My guest was really heading for Rock bottom fast and it's going to get worse before it gets better . Sad to say this is the case for most of us in the Graff game and the "rock bottom" is different for everyone and it's not always drugs that lead us to that point but in this case it definitely is. Personally I'm glad it went down the way it did for him because it really could and should have been worse. Fast forward one year and he is taking his recovery seriously and we're all proud of him for that! He's learning to live life with a positive mental attitude and is doing the hard work daily to b a better version of himself. Recovery isn't easy but today with his friends and family and the guidance and tools provided from his counselor and the program he is in the future is looking bright for my friend!

This is very special episode for me 🙏🏼 . Justin and Kelly's story started July 4th 2004 . Just two kids in their 20s living life. "Life" gets real serious real fast for them and truly test the love and loyalty they have for one another. Fast forward almost 20 years later and it's easy to see that they have an even stronger love for one another that plays out in every aspect of their lives . This love and loyalty is one of the reasons why they are successful business owners with the same rock solid team over a decade 👊🏼! (Got damn it nick!) . I can't say enough good/ true things about Justin and Kelly and the rest of my kick ass work family that has put up with me and my "life" for a very very very long time! I'm extremely grateful and honored to have Justin and Kelly as friends and examples in life . You can't talk about hip-hop culture in Sacramento California without mentioning the GETTA CLUE STORE . From 1992 to 2023 they have been providing the culture with the latest and greatest in street wear fashion and providing a space for the heads in the culture to thrive in DJ's, Graff writer, b boys and MC's aka rappers all know that in Sacramento GETTA CLUE is the spot were hip-hop is alive and well. This episode is the story of the store from one of the two founders. Scott Gilbert & Justin Bilbao build this store from the ground up before street wear was even a thing! Before the internet and social media way way way back when phone's were plugged in to the wall and you had to answer it to see who was on the other line!

One Saturday morning I was surfing on IG just seeing what's what . I came across a picture of the beginning stages of a huge mural. I instantly knew what the mural was and that was exciting but to b honest the thing that excited me most was WHERE it was ! Northgate Blvd hasn't changed much in 30 years so a huge mural of "Mexican dancer"(what I called it) was definitely something to b excited about. This is when I find out about BETH CONSETTA RUBEL . I learned what I could about her online and told myself I'd wait to see the mural in person when it's done . Exactly one year ago Cheyenne Randall aka Indian giver blessed me with my first ever interview on the first ever episode on this podcast. I had zero experience in podcasting or interviewing people 😆. So one year later with thousands of minutes of recording time and interviewing many different kinds of people I wanted another chance to sit down with Cheyenne as a more experienced host and also to celebrate his wife Ariel . During the recording of the episode the title POWER COUPLE kept coming to my mind because they truly are something special as a team . Dealing with artist isn't always easy, dealing with a spouse isn't always easy. This story is so wild and so not yet over that I ask the producer to remove the name of the writer because as some of you know it's not hard for detective's to look into your profile base on the smallest bit of information and then arrest warrants are issued and then hopefully bail and all the other "fun" stuff that comes with graff . Danilo tividad is a true product of the SF streets . Graffiti in the city during the 90s was a vibe of its own. Lead by an ideology made up of hardcore letter structure,style and real life street work was the foundation for the real writers in the game . Before the internet people had to see you up all over your city for you to have street cred . gallery owners were seeing the work to 😁 . Danilo's work was seen by a curator from a gallery and his art story begins! Yes Graff is art .I know you know that but the writers don't call it that because its truly not the same and that's ok ! When it comes to just making things it happen for yourself ERSE has no fear ! art with spray cans isn't easy . Painting different surfaces isn't just one size fits all. Mocking up a mural isn't a real quick process. Then throw in the social media hustle and it's a few full time jobs all wrapped as his day to day . In my neighborhood certain people stood out for different reasons"MAMMXTH " pronounced mammoth was one of those people! I went to highschool with this guy over 15 years ago😃 .I was a freshman he was a senior. A very popular senior for good reason. MAMMXTH was the dopest artist at Highlands highschool. Our friend JJ was the dopest Graffiti writer in our highschool . I was still toy at that time,I was inspired by their relationship and friendly competitive attitudes.
