Head and the Hares are seldom mentioned these days but at the start of the nineties they meant a lot to a handful of people around the world.
When the bone-throwing, fuzz-propelled garage punk was starting to wane dramatically these boys from Rome started a band to demonstrate their admiration for the moody folk-rock sound of New England circa 66/67.
So here is a taster of their 1992 LP released on Moulty Records.
Magical and bleak original songs sit proudly with covers by the 24 Karat 5, The Effects and the Barons.
The world has never been so melancholic since.

British radio DJ John Peel maintained a Record Box containing a small private collection of 143 singles. They were stored in a wooden box and represented some of his favourite 45s. This gave me an idea for a project of my own!
So, today I bought a vintage psychedelic record case, probably manufactured in the mid to late sixties. It looks, feels and smells like it’s from another dimension (which it is).
It’s only right and proper that I fill this beautiful case with appropriate psychedelic and ’60s garage 45s from my archive. My mission is to create short snappy mixes based on those records.

They were a rockin’ garage band, not the purist ’66 sort with moptops and Beatle boots, they were much more into the basic rock ’n roll of The Sonics and The Wailers. It’s no surprise that The Sinister Urge recorded two Sonics tracks for their demo tape namely ”Witch” and ”Boss Hoss”.

I have scanned the gig advert which appeared in Melody Maker, published on the 13th January. Most of the groups appearing at the Marquee were recording outfits and signed to record labels.

This is a special mix of Acid Revolver presenting previously unreleased recordings by psychedelic rock group The Flower Power. Joe Rolison, their bass guitarist, sent me these tracks a couple of years ago.
Here’s what he had to say about these undocumented relics:
“The recordings from 1969 were done in Houston TX. I was contacted by Fivepin Music, a Canadian record label who bought the masters, some songs sound like they are missing a final mix down.
Songs including ‘Black Dawn’, ‘Child Of Evil’ and ‘Go and Love That Man’ were not recorded by Flower Power, although they were labelled on the tape as such. These tracks were probably recorded as solo demo tapes by our singer Sandi Craig and session musicians.
My favourite of these to play live back then was You Can Lead A Horse’.
I was only 17 years old during these recordings from the Houston sessions.”

This new mix of ‘Acid Revolver’ is something of a showcase to a number of albums and 45s I’ve been spinning recently. Some of the music is new to me this month. The Gods album ‘Genesis’ from late 1968 is a heavy-psych head twister to behold. I plan to seek out more material by The Gods.

After just over one month of creating psychedelic mixes, I have already reached Episode 10. There is more way-out and obscure psychedelia, folk-rock and colourful sixties pop by groups that are long forgotten.

This new episode of ‘Acid Revolver’ zooms-in on modern day creations recorded by groups and performers just waiting for you to discover them. My mix includes jangle pop, psych, surf, instrumental trips, garage punk, fuzz and the usual sixties vintage radio spots and movie promo adverts.
All of the tracks were released post 2013. The offerings from Roxanne Fontana, The Paper Lips and Gabriel’s Dawn have come out within the past couple of months.
Sadly, Maggie’s Marshmallows from the Czech Republic, Los Angeles group The Creation Factory and Greek garage combo Tenderfeet have all disbanded with various members moving on to other musical projects.

The Jefferson Airplane are given regal status on this episode of “Acid Revolver”, with a track from their LP 'Surrealistic Pillow' and four Levi jeans radio promo adverts.
The psychedelic image decorating the cover was published in a 1967 copy of Harper's Bizarre and it goes well with the numbers featured in this mix created by my guest collaborator Grace Psychedelicized, a talented illustrator / artist from Mexico.
She has delivered a superbly balanced audio trip that takes in American, Mexican and British underground sounds. I would have preferred to have included more of her more obscure choices but didn't have tracks by Los Grillos, Cold Coffee, Les Comtes Harbourg and Los Comandos in my archive.
Backing up the cuts are those previously mentioned Jefferson Airplane radio commercials and a Vox wah wah promo spot.

The Daily Flash are the cover stars on this episode of "Acid Revolver", featuring their obscure number "Barbara Flowers". I believe it was recorded in the '60s but never released. They're here along with several other psychedelic charlatans.
Backing up the cuts are three radio station promo adverts with The Nazz, a Sunset Strip album promo highlighting many of the long-haired groups from the city and there's also an H.P. Lovecraft radio promo spot.
