Nakba is Arabic for disaster or catastrophe that happened to Palestinians in 1948 when around about 700,000 Palestinians fled their homes as refugees and Palestinian society and homeland ended.
Bilal Al Issa is a third generation Palestinian living in Denmark, a board member of the Danish house in Palestine (DHIP). His grandfather now in his 90s, is still in a refugee camp in Lebanon, yet hopes to return to his village that he left in 1948.
Daniel Bannoura, is a Christian Palestinian from Bethlehem, born in Jerusalem, and currently working on a PhD on the Qu’ran at Notre Dame in the United States.
Our two guests tell of their experiences, and how Nakba continues and plays out today in the Israel/Palestine conflict. They end by sharing how we as listeners can contribute to peace in the Holy Land.

Rami Elhanan is an Israeli graphic artist whose father survived Auschwitz. He lost his daughter Smadar in 1997. Two weeks off being 14 years old, Smadar was blown up by three Palestinian suicide bombers. She was out that afternoon buying books for school.
Bassam Aramin was a Palestinian prisoner for seven years for throwing grenades as a 17 year old at some Israeli soldiers that fortunately did not injure anyone. One day, on Holocaust Remembrance Day, he watched a film on the Holocaust and found himself weeping for the Jewish victims. After prison, he married, settled down, and engaged in reconciliation work with Palestinians and Israelis who refused to fight anymore. Then Abir, his 10 year old daughter was shot in 2007 by an Israeli soldier early in the morning outside school on her way to buy sweets/candy at a nearby shop.
Today Bassam and Rami work together telling their stories and inviting people to take the side of peace and end the occupation. They conclude this podcast with a peace invitation to each one of us, answering the question, “What can we do?”

The stories of Bassam and Rami are told in Apeirogon by Irish author Colum McCann (Bloomsbury, 2020). The book is a masterpiece with the testimonies of Bassam and Rami at its heart but then the wider story is cleverly and movingly novelized.

Keith Hebden is the founder/organiser of Leicester Citizens UK, now in its second year in the city. He is passionate in his fight against poverty and in listening to those who normally do not get heard. He is a very good organiser, reaching out to build a team of people from different ethnicities and faiths in Leicester to advocate for justice. He first started community organizing in Mansfield, Nottingham.

Sarah-Naomi James and Hannah Langford are sisters who grew up in South Wales. Sarah-Naomi now lives in London with her husband Declan. She is a postdoctoral researcher at University College London (UCL) studying mental and cognitive health. Hannah lives in Leicestershire with her husband Dave and daughter Ffion. She has worked in Special Educational Needs for years and works as a Child, Education and Community Psychologist in Warwickshire.

Stephen M. Veazey is president of Community of Christ. Prior to his ordination on June 3, 2005, he served as a member of the Council of Twelve Apostles. He was ordained as president of seventy at the 1988 World Conference and as an apostle at the 1992 World Conference. In April 2002, Steve was set apart as president of the Council of Twelve and was the director of Field Ministries. His responsibilities also included Church Planting Ministries and Young Adult and Campus Ministries.

Alexandre Christoyannopoulos is Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations at Loughborough University. He is the author of Christian Anarchism (2010), Tolstoy's Political Thought (2019) as well as a number of articles, chapters and other publications on religious anarchism and on Leo Tolstoy, including the multi-volume collection of Essays on Anarchism and Religion.
