A coaching basketball podcast by Coach Kevin Mondro - Coach Dro! Dro is now a coach for coaches. His goals: advocate coaches and help young coaches through the stories that these great coaching guests are sharing. Contact Info: tellmeyourstorycoach@gmail.com
This is officially the conclusion of Season #1 of the “Tell Me Your Story, Coach” Podcast. I appreciate everyone listening. Hopefully, we helped some young coaches learn and grow. In Episode #1, I said the goal was to talk to 100 Coaches. We accomplished this goal! My parents always told me to finish what I had started. And I thought it was imperative that my 7-year-old son, JJ, saw this example firsthand. I am unsure how and when and, honestly if ever, Season 2 will happen. The past 18 months have been super fun but also very challenging. Creating a weekly podcast takes hours upon hours of work. I can’t thank my wife, Liz, for her support- Enough! This podcast has been, indeed, a labor of love. I was unsure, before this podcast, that I ever helped a coach grow. That is, if I ever gave back to the coaching industry. I am proud to say that I can now sleep at night, knowing that I gave back to the coaching industry. Finally, and most importantly, I want to thank all 100 coaches who took time out of their busy schedules and trusted me to tell their coaching stories. I will be eternally grateful.

Coach Colin Shannon,
In this episode, you’ll hear from Coach Colin Shannon. Coach Shannon is currently the Director of Basketball Operations for Coach Greg Kampe at Oakland University. This is a pretty cool conversation. For starters, Coach Shannon is only 24 years old. However, I truly believe that his story can IMPACT some younger coaches. If you are a Student Manager or a Graduate Assistant or thinking about entering the world of college basketball, then this is conversation for you! Coach Shannon has been with the Oakland Basketball Program since 2016, holding roles in the following capacities: Student Manager, Assistant Video Coordinator, and Graduate Assistant. He also talks about his time as both a student manager and the the head freshman and junior varsity basketball coach at Royal Oak Shrine High School from 2016 to 2020. I am so appreciative that Coach Shannon helped coordinate past podcasts with Coach Covington, Coach Jones and Coach Smith. Coach Jeff Smith,
In this episode, you’ll hear from Coach Jeff Smith. Coach Smith is currently the Associate Head Coach for Coach Greg Kampe at Oakland University. And, everyone knows Coach Jeff as simply Smitty! Coach Smith was named the Associate Head Coach in August 2019. Before joining Coach Kampe and his incredible coaching staff, Coach Smitty spent the previous seven seasons as an assistant coach at Central Michigan University for Coach Keno Davis. This is Coach Smitty's second stint at Oakland. He was on the sidelines for the Golden Grizzlies as an Assistant Coach and Associate Head Coach for five sessions. And, Coach Smitty was part of a win in the 2005 NCAA Tournament. I am very eager for you to hear the amazing things that Smitty has to say about Coach Kampe. A former player and a graduate of Alma College, Smitty got his start as an assistant coach at Albion College from 1995 to 1997. He then joined the CMU program as a graduate assistant in 1997 and was promoted to assistant coach two years later. As you soon will hear, Coach Jay Smith played a major part in getting Smitty started in college coaching. Coach Smitty also worked as an assistant on Coach Jim Boylen's staff at Utah from 2007-11. I love our conversation. For starters, if you are a young coach who has been told that you can’t make it in this business - then this is the conversation for you. Coach Smitty was driven to prove so many people wrong. And, he has accomplished this. There is also a level of reflection from Coach Smith that is truly incredible and inspiring. Finally, the tips that Coach Smith shares about recruiting, teaching and creating genuine relationships are simply excellent. And, you will also be screaming “LIVE in the MOMENT“ and “CHASE YOUR DREAMS” after listening to this podcast.

Coach LaVall Jordan,
In this episode, you’ll hear from Coach LaVall Jordan. Coach Jordan played at Albion High School in Albion, Michigan. LaVall and his teammates went to back-to-back Michigan High School Final 4’s. As you will soon learn, Coach Jordan is all about winning. As a player at Butler University, Coach Jordan played in 3 NCAA tournaments and 1 NIT Tournament. He was a part of 91 wins at Butler. At the time, he was the winningest player in school history. After a two-year professional career, Coach Jordan returned to Butler as the Director Of Basketball Operations. After one season, LaVall was promoted to Assistant Coach. Working alongside then Assistant Coaches Brad Stevens and Matthew Graves for Head Coach Todd Lickliter, Butler advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2007, losing to Florida (the eventual National Champions). After a three-year tenure with Iowa in the Big Ten, Coach Jordan transitioned to the University of Michigan under Coach John Beilein. At Michigan, Coach Jordan was arguably one of the elite assistant coaches in all of college basketball. He helped the Wolverines reach 5 NCAA Tournaments, including a trip to the 2013 Final Four and National Championship Game. As you might expect, Coach Jordan was hired as the Head Coach at Milwaukee. In his only year at Milwaukee, Coach Jordan led the Panthers to the Horizon Tournament Championship. Coach Jordan returned to his alma mater to become the 24th Head Coach in the History of Butler. Coach Jordan led the Bulldogs to the NCAA and NIT Tournament. In addition, before Covid struck the country, Coach Jordan’s team was as ranked as high as 5 in the National polls. After all the above accolades, you will find out that Coach Jordan is as humble as they come. A man of deep faith, Coach Jordan talks so eloquently on why he coaches. And, coaching is what he does, not who he is. Wait until you hear him break this analogy down. Furthermore, Coach Jordan’s approach on being an assistant coach is maybe the best definition of loyalty that I have heard yet. Finally, if you are truly into teaching - no matter what sport you coach - wait to hear Coach Jordan talk about Mindset and Skill Set. This is a high-level conversation from a coach who sees something special in everyone he encounters!

Coach Chris Fowler.
In this episode, you’ll hear from Coach Chris Fowler. Coach Fowler is currently an assistant coach for Coach Shane Burcar at Northern Arizona University. Chris was hired at Northern Arizona in the Summer of 2020. And, as you soon will hear, Chris is an extremely talented young assistant coach. I was beyond impressed with him in our conversation. At 27 years of age, Coach Fowler, not me, sounds like the 20-year veteran coach. However, I should not be really that surprised. Chris Fowler was a terrific player for Coach Keno Davis at Central Michigan University. A four-year team captain at CMU, Coach Fowler finished his career at CMU as: the all-time assist leader, all-time leader in free throws made, all-time leader in free throws attempted, third all-time in steals, and fifth all-time in points. As an opposing coach against Chris for four seasons, I can say he was truly one of the most incredible players that I have ever coached against. Quite simple, he was the ultimate floor general. It is super cool to hear how his dad molded this amazing attribute at the age of six. After Coach Chris played overseas, Chris embarked on his coaching career as a Graduate Assistant for Coach Tom Izzo at Michigan State. With the Spartans, Coach Fowler was part of back-to-back Big 10 Championships and a 2019 Final Four appearance. As multiple guests on the podcast, the insight that Coach Chris shares about Coach Izzo and his staff is so fascinating. And for younger coaches, wait to hear how Coach Fowler was hired by Coach Shane at NAU. You’ll also hear Coach Fowler touch on his version of guard play, how he has conversations with his players, his scouting approach, how he gives suggestions, collaboration with the staff, and some key characteristics that he looks for on the recruiting trail. The admiration that he shares for his college head coach and staff and AAU coaches who paved the way for him is first class. I can’t say it enough, this is a first class young coach who is destined to be a head coach very soon!

In this episode, you’ll hear from Blake DuDonis. Coach DuDonis is currently the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. Coach Blake just completed year three as the leader of this D3 program. In the opening remarks of this podcast, I always say: “The Podcast Where We ADVOCATE COACHES and HELP YOUNG COACHES LEARN from the Coaches Telling these Stories.” I can’t wait to advocate for Coach Blake. Coach Blake’s family is basketball 24/7. His wife, Carly Thibault-DuDonis is the Associate Head Coach for the Minnesota Gophers. His father-in-law, Mike Thibault is the Head Coach of the Washington Mystics in the WNBA. And his brother-in-law, Eric Thibault is the Associate Head Coach of the Mystics. I always remind Carly and Blake that there probably is never a conversation within their family that does not center around coaching, teacher, or leading! However, Blake’s individual path to being a Head Coach is a product of hard work and determination. Quite simply, Blake has coached at every level - D1, D2, D3, and High School. Coach Blake has been a scout, manager, volunteer assistant, assistant coach, and head coach. Coach Blake had three stops as a college assistant: Merrimack, Gardner-Webb, and Buffalo. Trust me, this is a must-listen podcast about a coach who has figured out his coaching philosophy. And, why is that philosophy so intriguing and special to me? It is a philosophy built on LOVE. The reason why Coach Blake coaches is truly inspiring. In addition, Coach Blake’s thoughts on how he treats his players and earns their trust are really insightful. If you want to learn about how to improve your own player's relationships, then this podcast is for you. Finally, the unique thoughts that Coach Blake has on winning is really something to wrap your head around. Wait until you hear how he approaches this. Coach Brad Stevens,
In this episode, you’ll hear from Brad Stevens. This SPECIAL BONUS PODCAST is simply about tips for coaches as they approach March. As we all know, we want to be playing our best basketball in March. I am very fortunate that Brad Stevens would take time off his schedule to offer his thoughts on how teams can win in March. Coach Stevens is currently the President of Basketball Operations for the Boston Celtics. In addition, Coach Stevens is coming off an eight-year run as their Head Coach. Coach Stevens won over 350 games and led the Celtics to three Eastern Conference Final appearances. Before becoming an NBA Head Coach, Coach Stevens was the Head Coach at Butler University for six seasons. Brad’s success at Butler was simply incredible: five NCAA Appearances, two NCAA Final Fours, and back-to-back NCAA National Title game appearances. Actually, Coach Stevens has a career college winning percentage of close to 80 percent. The conversation that Brad and I have is a wonderful deep dive into some specific ways that Brad prepared his Butler teams to win in March. So many of us have heard about the Butler Way. Brad so eloquently breaks down that the Butler Way was really about TEAM. It is a great perspective into how when teams come together and collectively focus on one goal: that is, winning. Wait until you hear Coach Stevens talk about how he tried to get his players to play with a clear mind. Brad does a masterful job explaining why he believes that having three team meetings was a big part of his process when preparing on short turnarounds in the NCAA Tournament. Many of us admire Coach Stevens for his calmness and positivity on the sidelines. It is pretty special to hear Coach Stevens give his thoughts on coaching with poise. What is your coaching thought process on Special Situations? I am excited for you to hear how Brad approaches these moments. Did you ever wonder how Brad constructed the famous Butler ball screen continuity offense? Pretty cool to get this insight. Finally, throughout the podcast, you are going to hear Coach Stevens say the words "simple" and/or "simplify" multiple times. It is remarkable to hear how Coach Stevens was able to prepare his teams to win in March. This is a 25-minute conversation with a basketball coach who is a high-level coach and elite leader.

Coach Drew Denisco,
In this episode, you’ll hear from Drew Denisco. Drew is currently an assistant coach for Coach Stan Heath at Eastern Michigan University. Coach Drew is in year one with Coach Heath at EMU. Coach Denisco knew that he would coach the game of basketball at the age of ten. As you soon will find out this is a podcast about finding your niche and working so hard in your niche that the people around you - ultimately go to bat for you. After a graduate year at Cleveland State, it is at the University of Akron for Coach Keith Dambrot where Drew became enamored with his niche: video. After his tenure with Akron, Drew went to the Cleveland Cavaliers to work in their video department. For three seasons, Drew’s basketball mind expanded learning under three NBA coaches. In addition, with the Cavs, Coach Denisco rolled up his sleeves and worked. Sleeping four nights a week in the Cavs practice facility became the norm for Drew. Quite simply, his goal was to make sure the Cavs staff had all the necessary video breakdowns on the desk, as soon as they entered the building in the morning. In addition, Drew never left the court until the last Cavs player was finished - getting the extra shots they needed. Oh, by the way, Coach Drew shares an incredible LeBron James story in the podcast. After stops in Switzerland, Poland, and Belgium, Chris returned to the United States to play with the NBA Development League's Fort Wayne Mad Ants. And in 2009, he was named to the 2009 NBADL All-Star Team. Through endless hard work and massive self-belief, Chirs participated in two training camps with the New York Knicks. And, during the 2009-10 season, Chris made it to the NBA. Coach Hunter played in 60 games, starting nine, with the NBA's Golden State Warriors. After his professional career was over, Chris instantly knew that he wanted to give back and do the same that so many coaches in his own life had done for him. In this conversation, Chris depicts so many interesting behind-the-scenes facts that confirm why Coach Howard’s Wolverines were Big 10 Champions and an Elite 8 team last season. Coach Hunter’s perspective on the importance of details and culture will, for sure, have you evaluating your own coaching philosophy. After listening to Coach Hunter, you will appreciate that this is a man of deep thought and introspective. Coach Hunter’s thoughts on the “big picture” are as good as anything that has been shared on this podcast. Trust me, this is a must-listen. Coach Charlie is in year three with this top twenty-five nationally-ranked basketball program. As you soon will hear, Coach Nate Oats gave Coach Henry his first start in coaching. Coach Oats offered Coach Henry an assistant position at Romulus High School right after his playing days ended at Madonna University in Livonia, Michigan. However, Charlie Henry knew that he wanted to be a coach at the tender age of five years old. Growing up and watching his dad, Chuck, coach his high school team, Charlie’s first love has always been coaching. Right after getting his feet wet in the coaching profession, Coach Henry immediately set forth on an action packed coaching journey. Quite simply, his ten-year resume is absolutely incredible: Graduate Assistant at Utah for Coach Jim Boylen. Video intern for Coach Frank Vogel at the Indiana Pacers. Graduate Assistant, Player Development, and Assistant Coach for Coach Fred Hoiberg at Iowa State. Oh by the way, at the time, Coach Henry was the youngest assistant coach in the Big 12. Assistant Coach for Coach Fred Hoiberg with the Chicago Bulls. And, finally, Head Coach of the Windy City Bulls in the G-League. This is a young assistant coach who is destined to be a Division I head coach very soon. However, nothing in this podcast is about Coach Henry. Charlie is so complimentary of the Head Coaches that he has learned under and the co-workers that he has also had the pleasure to work alongside. In addition, this conversation is an incredible inside look at Coach Nate Oats and his Alabama basketball program. The amount of ownership that Coach Oats gives his staff is so eye opening. Finally, so much of this podcast is about serving. Whether it is preparing his players to play a game or helping his players get better, Coach Henry is determined to help his players become the best version of themselves. And, trust me, we are all going to be better coaches and leaders after listening to this future head coach.

Quite simply, he made it a quest to know every player in the state of Michigan. Coach Lonnie’s tips for young coaches on recruiting is a must listen! Coach Todd Simon,
In this episode, you’ll hear from Todd Simon. Coach Simon is the head coach at Southern Utah University. Coach Todd is entering year six as the leader of their basketball program. Fresh off of a Big Sky Conference Championship, the reigning Big Sky Coach of the Year took 35 minutes out of his busy schedule to break down his coaching philosophies. Besides being Coach of the Year in the Big Sky, Coach Simon was honored last season as the NABC District 6 Coach of the Year. He also won the 2021 Jim Phelan Award, and was a finalist for the Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award and the Hugh Durham Award. In the opening minutes of this podcast, Coach Simon talks about how the goal of their program is to lead the nation in relationships. As a matter of fact, he wants he and his staff to have transformational - not transactional - relationships with all of the players in their program. As you will soon find out, Coach Todd is a breath of fresh air. To him, the mental health of his players is at the top of his list as he approaches each day. And, he is driven to make the game of basketball fun for his players. Whether it is having a team score 84 points per game or texting with his players every night about their days and their overall well-being, Coach Todd wants to make sure that his players believe that they can make the next shot. It is extraordinary to hear a head coach talk so openly about the mistakes he made in year one at the helm of his program and how he knew he had to change. It is a level of vulnerability that is extremely humbling and inspiring. Coach Todd Simon can flat out coach. Southern Utah has not lost at home in over 650 days. It is not common that you hear a coach say that “basketball is not the only thing in their players' lives." But Todd Simon is different. He is a coach that thrives on player relationships and player development. To me, it is no surprise why the kids run through a wall for him. This is the perfect listen for the holiday season.

As a matter of fact, JR was a three-time team captain during his college career. Coach JR is a twelve-year veteran now in the college coaching industry. However, his journey to a top 25 program was not an overnight story. It was a product of consistent hard work and impact with the players he coached. Coach Jody May
In this episode, you’ll hear from Jody May. Jody is currently the Head Coach at Albion College. Coach May has been the Head Coach of Albion since 2008. And Jody has been with Albion, and his mentor, Coach Mike Turner since 1997. Coach May won a DIII National Title as a player. However, he fell in love with the game of basketball because of countless hours watching his dad coach in Ohio. It is his Dad and Coach Turner who instilled into him his core coaching philosophy—to do things the right way. And Coach May has been doing things the right way since the moment he became the head coach of Albion. In 2019-2020, Coach May and his team won a conference championship. It was the culmination of years of hard work, grit and belief - chasing two incredible DIII Programs - who simply were at the top year in and out. However, this championship season was more than getting scores and countless stops. This was about an extreme tragedy that impacted their program, the loss of a player due to death. There is no coaching playbook when you lose a player on your team, especially a death. Quite simply, this is not a podcast about X and O’s. This is a podcast about a coach who had to truly lead his team in uncharted waters. As a former Albion player addressed his team: “You will never get over this, but you can get through it.” The 2019-2020 Albion basketball team did get through it in remarkable fashion. As a previous podcast guest DJ Mocini recently texted me about the leadership that Coach May performed during that season: “Coach of the year that season for any level, in any sport.” Coach DJ is so spot on! Finally, wait to hear how Coach May discusses how he has evolved as a coach. It is simply so terrific. At the age of twenty nine, Jeff accepted the head coaching position for the men’s program at Lincoln Memorial University. After a successful tenure, Jeff spent nine years assisting both Dane Fife at IPFW and Greg Kampe at Oakland. It is with Coach Kampe that Jeff played a massive role in helping Coach Kampe and his program reach three NCAA tournaments. And when the Oakland Athletic Director asked Coach Tungate if he would take over the women’s program at Oakland, Jeff said yes instantly! Right off the bat, you are going to learn that Coach Jeff coaches to make a difference. And, he does not believe in a four-year plan for the young women that he coaches. If you are a young assistant coach, this is a MUST LISTEN! Finally, Jeff is as authentic as they come. At the core of his coaching philosophy is being himself. Coach Dr. Klint Pleasant,
In this episode, you’ll hear from Dr. Klint Pleasant, current Head Coach at Rochester University. Klint has been the Head Coach at Rochester for the last 11 seasons. As a matter of fact, Klint took over the program from his father, Garth Pleasant. Coach Garth was the head coach for 38 seasons at Rochester. As you soon will find out, since Klint was a little boy, all he wanted to do was coach. He idolized his dad. And his dad included young Klint in every aspect of the Rochester basketball program. It is no surprise why Coach Klint has done such an amazing job at Rochester. The reigning WHAC Coach of the Year, has created a NAIA powerhouse in the suburbs just north of Detroit. Seven All-Americans later and fresh off a National Tournament appearance, Coach Pleasant has no intentions of stopping. Coach Klint does an incredible job of detailing each aspect of his coaching philosophy: being a teacher, making something complex truly simple by teaching, the importance of listening as a coach, and his thoughts on culture are so well organized and relatable to all coaches and organizations. However, this podcast is truly about a coach who was destined to be a household coaching name but had an unfortunate family tragedy that set his career on a total different trajectory. This is a podcast about a coach who is an ELITE father and husband and who has battled the challenges of life for the last sixteen years. And, as a result, this coach has become a better coach and indeed a better person. Klint Pleasant is a coach, a leader, a doctor, an author and, for sure, an inspiration for so many coaches to learn about this incredible man. We will all be better people today after hearing his coaching story.
