It can happen to anyone. My son was poisoned with a counterfeit Percocet that contained pure fentanyl.
We lost our amazing son, Matthew Thomas, at 20 years of age to fentanyl poisoning. He took what he thought was a Percocet and died moments later on the morning of 07/25/2020. Because of this tragic loss our family experienced, we want to do everything in our power to keep another family from suffering this way. That is why we created Matthew's Voice.
The mission of Matthew’s Voice is to educate teens and young adults about the dangers of fentanyl poisoning specifically, and drug use in general. In addition, to provide rehabilitation scholarships for individuals who lack financial means.
To achieve this mission, we will go around to local high schools and teen organizations. We will make this issue personal, giving teens and young adults a first hand account of the consequences that can come from drug use. We will also talk about the fentanyl epidemic, the dangers of drug use in general and the role social media plays in the availability and distribution of various drugs. Once we are able, we will also offer scholarships to teens and young adults for treatment in drug rehab programs.
The sky is the limit and we have big hopes and dreams for this organization. Matthew may not be here to warn our youth of the dangers of drug use, but through Matthew's Voice, his legacy will live on and he will save lives. We will shout to the top of the Blue Ridge Mountains and beyond to be sure Matthew's Voice is heard.

Dr. Smith is an expert in this field with personal, firsthand experience with the humiliation and shame that accompanies substance use disorder. He points out that addiction is a disease .. no less so than diabetes, heart disease or hypertension... and needs to be treated as such.
Unlike most other illnesses, substance use disorder is characterized predominantly by behavior. Stigma is our biggest killer. It is a deterrent in combatting addiction and to get to the root of this disease. It hinders growth and progression.

The overwhelming majority of Fentanyl POISONINGS are NOT "overdoses". The term "overdose" implies the user had knowledge of the presence of illicit fentanyl and CHOSE to use it anyway and then used too much. This is NOT what is happening in the majority of cases with illicit fentanyl. We call this the new "paradigm" in the drug world.
Counterfeit prescription pills made to look IDENTICAL to a prescription Adderall, Percocet, Oxycontin, Xanax are pouring into our country courtesy of China and the Mexican drug cartels. Your child might buy or be handed what they think is a Xanax which will NOT kill them, but they are actually getting pure fentanyl which will. EVERY batch of these counterfeit pills being made by the cartels have pills which contain lethal amounts of illicit fentanyl.
The broad contamination of traditionally non-lethal drugs like cocaine, heroin and meth with illicit fentanyl have created another dimension of drug induced homicides where the users may have intended to ingest cocaine which would generally NOT kill them with a single use but these drugs are being contaminated without the users knowledge with illicit fentanyl and they are dying.
This deception of our young people is killing unsuspecting young people at a rate of over 280 a day in this country from illicit fentanyl toxicity.
Nobody deserves to die for making one bad choice. In today's world of illicit fentanyl they are.

And where are State and local Public Health agencies in doing the same. It is their immediate responsibility to alert the public to any Public Health emergency.

The first thing I told the detective on the case was,
“I don’t want any other mommies to feel this way! I don’t want this guy to kill anyone else! Promise me you’ll get him!”
I didn’t know Fentanyl was being sold in street drugs, on Snapchat, or in our community until Luca died. My need to warn the community (Awareness) outweighed my need for vengeance. Just so we’re clear vengeance and justice aren’t even close to each other. In the beginning my mind was set on vengeance. Justice will SAVE lives, vengeance WON'T!
Fentanyl Poisoning is murder. Most victims of Fentanyl Poisoning had no idea what was in the substance they were taking because they were told it was something else. One day at a time... This is an interview with Freida, a mother who lost her only 2 sons. Her oldest son to a homicide and 4 years later his brother died from Fentanyl poisoning. Both died at the age of 24 years old. This is Stephens and Michaels story shared by their mother.
Ripple Effect...."We began to lose Michael when we lost Stephen"
As you can empathize, when Stephen died from a homicide... his family was devastated!
Freida channeled her grief by getting involved with homicide related death support groups, while Michael began his journey of opioid addiction by self-medicating to numb his pain.
The aftermath with the tragedy of losing his brother was overwhelming!
As Freida explains in her interview, there are similarities between GRIEF and ADDICTION. Both are a process and we are always in recovery. With the death of both of her sons, she turned to her strong faith. She found purpose in this new chapter of her life as a grieving mother. She found solace and strength to help others who shared similar griefs.

RAPP, short for Relatives Against Purdue Pharma... An activist group who testified at hearings, lent support at whistle-blower trials and marched outside pharmaceutical-funded physician meetings to make their voices heard to bring awareness and education towards much-needed changes with the opioid crisis in America.
Their leader was Ed Bisch, an I.T. worker from Philadelphia who’d lost his 18-year-old son, Eddie, in 2001. They called him the Godfather because he’d brought them together in the first place, via his website, OxyKills, shortly after Eddie’s death.
As for the Godfather, Ed Bisch still assumes his position every morning at his computer. “Purdue has never given a dime to the people they enslaved, I’d like to see anyone addicted get access to help, but it’s still going to be a mess.”
“I was so naïve in the beginning,” he added. Today, none of us can afford to be naïve about the intentions of a drug company — or the ability of government regulators to protect us from those who put profits above the public good.

Zach purchased on SnapChat, what he thought was a Percocet. That one pill ended his life with a lethal dose of Fentanyl. Death by Deception!
Parents need to realize the drug paradigm has shifted dramatically since they themselves were teenagers.
"My son would have never taken that pill if he knew the market was flooded by these counterfeit pills. All you get is a rude awakening when this happens. We had no idea of this problem. We were blindsided by the death of our son."

He was prescribed pain medications to ease his excruciating pain. This began his battle with an opioid addiction. He died at age 23 from illicit fentanyl poisoning.

In the wake of losing Cal, I have been working closely with Song for Charlie to warn kids about the dangers of fentanyl and fake pills. One of my projects is to make school districts nationwide aware of this issue, and to encourage districts to take action. I am working with a grass-roots network of volunteers to reach as many districts as possible, and thought I would also share this project with my personal friend group in case anyone is interested in getting their local school district to take action.
Cal would do anything to save a friend. Since he is not here to do it himself, I have taken on this task for him.
Please take a few minutes to educate yourself on the fentanyl epidemic. Our media, legislators, schools are all behind in warning parents and kids about this issue, and education is the best defense.

It can happen to anyone. My son was poisoned with a counterfeit Percocet that contained pure fentanyl.
We lost our amazing son, Matthew Thomas, at 20 years of age to fentanyl poisoning. He took what he thought was a Percocet and died moments later on the morning of 07/25/2020. Because of this tragic loss our family experienced, we want to do everything in our power to keep another family from suffering this way. That is why we created Matthew's Voice.
The mission of Matthew’s Voice is to educate teens and young adults about the dangers of fentanyl poisoning specifically, and drug use in general. In addition, to provide rehabilitation scholarships for individuals who lack financial means.
To achieve this mission, we will go around to local high schools and teen organizations. We will make this issue personal, giving teens and young adults a first hand account of the consequences that can come from drug use. We will also talk about the fentanyl epidemic, the dangers of drug use in general and the role social media plays in the availability and distribution of various drugs. Once we are able, we will also offer scholarships to teens and young adults for treatment in drug rehab programs.
The sky is the limit and we have big hopes and dreams for this organization. Matthew may not be here to warn our youth of the dangers of drug use, but through Matthew's Voice, his legacy will live on and he will save lives. We will shout to the top of the Blue Ridge Mountains and beyond to be sure Matthew's Voice is heard.

The first thing I told the detective on the case was,
“I don’t want any other mommies to feel this way! I don’t want this guy to kill anyone else! Promise me you’ll get him!”
I didn’t know Fentanyl was being sold in street drugs, on Snapchat, or in our community until Luca died. My need to warn the community (Awareness) outweighed my need for vengeance. Just so we’re clear vengeance and justice aren’t even close to each other. In the beginning my mind was set on vengeance. Justice will SAVE lives, vengeance WON'T!

As Freida explains in her interview, there are similarities between GRIEF and ADDICTION. Both are a process and we are always in recovery. RAPP, short for Relatives Against Purdue Pharma... An activist group who testified at hearings, lent support at whistle-blower trials and marched outside pharmaceutical-funded physician meetings to make their voices heard to bring awareness and education towards much-needed changes with the opioid crisis in America.
Their leader was Ed Bisch, an I.T. worker from Philadelphia who’d lost his 18-year-old son, Eddie, in 2001. They called him the Godfather because he’d brought them together in the first place, via his website, OxyKills, shortly after Eddie’s death.
As for the Godfather, Ed Bisch still assumes his position every morning at his computer. “Purdue has never given a dime to the people they enslaved, I’d like to see anyone addicted get access to help, but it’s still going to be a mess.”
“I was so naïve in the beginning,” he added. Today, none of us can afford to be naïve about the intentions of a drug company — or the ability of government regulators to protect us from those who put profits above the public good.
Today we know just how dangerous this drug is. Purdue Pharma, the company that made OxyContin, the first extended-release opioid to be widely prescribed, may finally be held to account. Some 500,000 people have died from overdosing on prescription opioids, and around 2,000 lawsuits attempting to make opioid makers and distributors pay for the damage unleashed by careless overprescribing are wending their way through the courts. But experts predict it will take more than $100 billion to turn the crisis around, and it’s hard to feel optimistic when you know the story of how long and hard these four labored in obscurity before anyone listened to them.

The term "overdose" does have a use when defining prescription or over the counter medications which have instructions for safe use which were ignored. But it has no place describing illicit drugs.

Parents need to realize the drug paradigm has shifted dramatically since they themselves were teenagers.
