"When I look at the culture shift since 1999 to today, when I hear the public discourse, I hear a lot of smart people arguing. I hear a lot of dumb people too. Except those people don’t think they’re dumb. And that’s complicated. Maybe I just didn’t notice things when I was younger or maybe I’m cherry-picking my examples. But I think the shows and movies people want to watch are the ones that don’t treat them like they’re dumb. Or that their characters are dumb. I think the shows that stand out, that shape our world, that inform our public consciousness, the ones that people remember and respect. I think they’re about smart people. Complicated people. They’re about decisions and circumstances that can’t be fixed in 40 mins by a smart 13 year old. These shows stand out because when you watch them, you feel smart. Because you get it. You know what emotions are, that life, that people are complicated. You watch and you feel smart because the show treats you like you’re smart."

"Imagine you are a celebrity who doesn’t like the “celebrity” part. You hate talking about yourself, you hate promoting “your brand”, and most of all, you hate the idea of showcasing the “celebrity version” of you.
Now imagine you’ve been invited to feature on a show that is wildly popular, widely enjoyed, and the most important thing about the production is that they care more about the show than they do promoting you. In fact, the show doesn’t ask you to do any of the heavy lifting in terms of being entertaining. They just want you to be yourself"

"It starts with a bridge in a town outside Stockholm. If you ask anybody else what it’s about, and if that person is uncomfortable, as we all are uncomfortable, with admitting that this is about our own fears, insecurities, and self. If you ask someone like that, like me, and their walls are up, the way walls are always up. If you ask them what Fredrik Backman’s book, Anxious People is about. They’ll say it’s about a bank robbery, a hostage drama, a group of people eating pizza. But they’re lying, because that’s just the story. The book, what it’s about. It’s about the ways we love eachother. This book. It’s about everyone."

"My intention was to point out that a famously family-friendly comedy had the same traits as any good horror film and that with just a slight tonal shift, a change in perspective and perhaps a twist on motivation, it could very well be a horror film.
That was my intent.
Instead, and I think for the better, I ended up with a personal voyage of fear, anxiety, and self-exploration through the lense of a great American film. Looking at a touchstone of American family cinema through the experiences of being an adult and how time has changed what a story once said to me, meant to me, represented for me."

"My daughters laugh at the silliness of Mrs. Doubtfire. They are lifted by the happy ending of Daniel being allowed to see his kids for a few hours after school. They have loved this classic movie and they love Robin Williams and they have spent a happy few hours with their dad in their new home. It’s a good day for them. A happy memory.
Me? I’m shook. I cannot watch this movie ever again. It’s too much."

"Podcasting, as with any creative endeavour, is significantly harder than people believe it is. There is a lot that goes into planning, creation, recording, editing, posting, social media, promotion, it’s a lot. And for most people, it’s just a thing they’re going to do. It’s not a big-money generator. You have to really care about what you’re putting out because nobody is going to thank you for it. It’s going to take a lot out of your week, every week, so you’re going to need to be sure that it’s something you’re willing to talk about and dedicate time to. Which is where I got trapped."

"I love an action adventure video game because I love stories about people. I love the idea of world building through the eyes of a protagonist, slowly dripping out the plot through discovery and human interaction. Nothing does that better than a really good Action Adventure Narrative Video Game. Blending interesting gameplay mechanics with human emotion and strange puzzles of logic and deduction with conflict and drama is easily my favourite way to enjoy a good story. It keeps me involved. I’m not passively experiencing it, I’m living it, making the decisions, discovering the secrets, informing the protagonists journey. A LOT of people like these games for those very reasons. A lot of those people are gamers."

"It’s getting harder and harder to find an exceptional action adventure narrative that is short enough to actually finish. It may become impossible and there doesn’t seem to be any demand to stop making long games. Nobody is asking for short games because they aren’t worth the money. Video gamers want a great value proposition. Video gamers want 40 hour games with 20 hour DLC packs. Video Gamers want 'The Witcher 3'. Video Game Studios know this and they’ve decided to deliver what Videogamers want."

"It’s getting much harder to define what is nerdy or geeky the same way they were defined in the past. Both of these terms were meant to describe outsiders, people who weren’t normal, people whose interests were looked down upon for whatever reason. People who didn’t follow the norm. That’s what it meant back in the way back. It’s undeniable that Traditionally nerdy and geeky things are now the mainstream. No longer relegated to the shadows of pop culture. The prevailing opinions being that comic books and video games are great, that nerds are hot, and that all of the cool kids do nerd things."

"If you don’t enjoy a game of Monopoly, it’s likely because you’ve been playing it wrong. If you dislike board games in general, it’s likely because you played Monopoly wrong. It’s not Monopoly’s fault. And it’s not yours either. Monopoly, on the whole, is a perfectly serviceable game, but it’s legacy will always be that it’s a long, terrible game that will make your family be mean to you. That opinion is not unwarranted, but it is partially our own fault because as I previously stated, we’ve been playing it wrong."

"Depth isn’t easy to find, certainly not in short form media. Which is what made “Dark Quiet Death”, the 5th episode of Season 1 of Mythic Quest, remarkable. It’s short. The story, a simple one. But the depths of character, motivation, drive, purpose… Its depths seemingly bottomless and its message universal. I have watched and re-watched the episode a few times, with my kids, on my own, with friends, and every time I do, someone finds something new in it. Some thought or feeling or comparison that I missed. The tale, a standard one, but the characters a mirror into what it’s like to love and be loved and to be selfish and to be selfless and to be self-assured and be lost."

"There’s a really good reason why you may not know about the television show 'Mythic Quest' despite how good it is. It was created by many of the people behind 'It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia' and stars Rob McIlhenny and has some of the sharpest writing in television today. It feels like if Silicon Valley was written by the Always Sunny team and that makes it better than both those shows. All of these are reasons you SHOULD know about it. But you don’t. Because it’s on Apple TV+."

"If you’ve seen only the Ted Lasso NBC Sports segments or the Ted Lasso trailer you’ll know that this show is going to be hilarious. But what you won’t know is that it’s the latest show, taking part in a very small trend of television writing that focuses on men. This trend doesn’t focus on heroic feats, unearned confidence, misguided masculinity, overbearing drive or any other faults that make men in entertainment off-putting. It focuses on introspectiveness, understanding your emotions, actively trying to be kind, and accepting failure as a step towards success in life, relationships, and self-fulfillment. More importantly, it focuses on men helping men. Men with real, human issues speaking to the men in their lives and finding friendship, understanding and family within a male relationship. This small trend is taking hold, step by tiny step, one show at a time and for me personally, It’s the greatest thing that’s happened in television for a long time."

"There are so many reasons not to remake something and most of them are excellent reasons.
But there is always magic and possibility when it comes to film and cinema. Sometimes there’s a tiny idea that keeps growing. And sometimes it’s just fun to work through how it could be done right.
I still have a lot to say about remaking the Princess Bride and it turns out, so do you, so let’s talk about that."

"There are some things you just don’t mess with. Films, or books, or art that should never be touched. It is amazing, it is the pinnacle of what it could be. It is Untouchable. Language like this has stopped meaning their literal definitions for me. I no longer catch the absoluteness of the claims. I hear them as playful. As hyperbole. And because I no longer hear the gavel being dropped on the finality of the judgement. I don’t hear unassailable fact. I hear another person like me, who loves stuff, saying they love stuff. And this is dangerous, because lately, I’ve been thinking about one of those perfect, untouchable properties that should never be messed with. And I’ve been thinking, maybe we should mess with it."

"I went in blind thinking the objective best Disney Animated Feature would be Lion King, Aladdin, Little Mermaid or Frozen. And they don't rank in the top five. Zootopia does, and so does Winnie The Pooh. The movie that show up top 3 in most lists I found is Fantasia and that's BARELY a movie...
My fave of all time, as you know, is The Emperor's New groove. The Llama movie is the one that gives me the most joy and best memories and I have a lot of very hard and specific opinions about it. And it turns out, so do you.
So Let's Talk about that."

"The Emperors New Groove, which I will be calling 'The Llama Movie' for the rest of this podcast and for the rest all time, came out in 2000 as basically a failure. There is no doubt that the Llama movie had a lot to live up to and maybe it just couldn’t ever live up to it. But, so did Tarzan. So did Mulan. So did Pocahontas. The fact that the Llama movie failed so badly can’t be put on the overwhelming pressure of past films because the past films had the same pressure. I blame the world. Or more specifically, the Disney Movie Watching people of the world who, at that time, wanted Disney to keep making the Lion King and Little Mermaid over and over again."

"There’s something special about a crime fighting duo, especially one that SHOULDN’T be a crime fighting duo that really intrigues me. Watching a smart person be asked to help professional people to do their job is silly and kind of inspiring. It’s kind of a fantasy coming true. Being so good at something naturally that others ask you to do it despite it not being your job. I think we’d all like to be “discovered” for a hidden talent. Have our “Good Will Hunting” moment. Last week I talked about my favourite genre of television which does just that. Something Weird and a lady cop is someone who shouldn’t be asked to solve crimes and make the world safer being tagged to do just that. I had a lot to say about it and why I love it so much. And it turns out, so did you!"

Welcome to “The Adventures We Have From Inside The House”.
A podcast about entertainment, how and why we consume it, and how it shapes our lives.
And, more importantly, a podcast that celebrates the things you like even if nobody else does.
My name is Tim Riel and I am “Nerd Incorrect”, the boy who loves entertainment of every kind and always seems to fall in love with the properties and art that don’t always follow the crowd.
To stay on brand, I have to warn you that this isn’t technically a review podcast.
It also isn’t specifically about any type of media.
Instead, I explore music, tv, movies, video games, books, anything that is made by artists for us to consume while we’re living our lives.
And since I’m passionate, opinionated, highly subjective, and so many times, incorrect, I have to repeat; This is NOT a review show.
I’m not going to objectively weigh any piece of art on any merits.
What I will do is explore the things that make entertainment beautiful, share some insights I’ve developed, and some secrets I’ve collected along the way.
Thank you for joining me and I hope that this podcast serves you as a fine way to pass the time while we talk about
The Adventures We Have From Inside the house.
