Matt is once again using podcasting as therapy. Sometimes life throws you disappointments. It is interesting, and comforting, when accomplishments are mixed in. He also threw out this question on social media a couple of months ago.
Is there such a thing as being too nice to someone? I understand how being ‘over the top’ with kindness can seem smothering and even not authentic. However, what if a person’s demeanor is one of simply being nice. Does this make a person too predictable or uninteresting?

Does life have to have purpose? In researching patriarchy, I read somewhere that men don’t have to prove their worth by how hard they work. Merely existing on this planet is enough. I am contemplating this idea and I am not sure what my opinion is.

I believe now, as the summer is quickly coming to a close, it is important to take a moment to reflect on the fun moments we had and on the experiences that allowed us to grow. However, we all should have the courage to not get caught in the moments that didn’t go as we would have liked and accept that it is crucial for us to take the next step in our journey as fall and the last quarter of our calendar year approach.
Young people today, by and large, do not get credit for the wisdom they have. I am more than pleased with how much I learned by knowing my son. This sermon provides the listener with a glimpse of how special he truly is. There have been brief moments in my life where I remember feeling an instant connection with a person just by seeing them enter a room. In each instance, I could never explain it and on a couple of occasions deep feelings developed. For the most part, I would say this initial spark wasn't meant to be forever. I still find myself chasing these moments. However, as I get older, perhaps love isn't dependent on the unexplained magical infatuation at first appearance? How much credence do you give to "love at first sight"?

Dictionary.com defines Simp as a “slang insult for men who are seen as too attentive and submissive to women, especially out of a failed hope of winning some entitled sexual attention or activity from them.” I have also heard this term used in terms of men doing nice for women who really just are nice guys who would do anything for anyone. We can say we don’t care if we are judged, but reality can contradict this. Nobody wants the feeling of being taken advantage of. Also, it isn’t an attractive quality to be a “yes’ person to another’s regular demands. I wonder if this derogatory term prevents men from being chivalrous?
This episode is the beginning of my exploring the concept of patriarchy that is all around. Oftentimes, we don’t even realize it is there and have a difficult time admitting we are products of a societal system that isn’t healthy for any of us.

As I read many of your posts and comments, I admire how positive many of you are. Even if you are single and would like to be in a relationship, there seems to be this recognition of happiness truly coming from within. I believe it is too easy for us to give up on ourselves, be quick to judge others, and isolate ourselves from life’s adventures. I also believe it takes courage to recognize the beauty around us and to pause before we judge people/situations. Ultimately, if we choose to be positive we learn and become more fulfilled. What do you think? Does it take courage to be positive?

Many of us openly desire the concept of being in love and having that love mutually returned. However, oftentimes when actual love creeps into our presence we have this feeling of uncertainty and fear. Why are we afraid? Have any of you experienced what I am mentioning? How many of you have made life altering decisions based on the charisma of another individual? During the pandemic, I bought a subscription to Amazon Kindle. This allowed me to read many books that I would have otherwise not found. Through this subscription, I was able to read many memoirs written by women who left dangerous cults. Some of these authors were born into cults, others joined when they were adults typically during a time where they were in vulnerable positions (substance abuse, financial distress, in a relationship stagmire). The common theme in all of these situations is the power of patriarchal magnetism. They are drawn by this power and charm, only later to discover that the male figurehead is truly just a narcissist who thrives on power and focuses solely on his own selfish desires. This type of experience isn’t solely exemplified in escaping a dangerous cult. One can also find a bazillion examples of how all of us have been drawn to individuals who have powerful qualities we admire, only to figure out later down the road that this mystical charm wears off after a while exposing a deeply flawed figure who is unhealthy for us to be around.

How many of you experienced something like the following: You are interested in someone. Perhaps you even went out on a couple of dates. The person decides not to continue dating you and isn't clear as to why. Then, on social media they state they are currently not dating because, "No one is interested." which isn’t true as you are indeed interested in them. If this has happened to you, how does such an experience make you feel?

I have been divorced now for a little more than three years. I am currently not dating anyone. I am truly unattached and feeling relatively happy with my life; happier than I have been for a while. How many of you feel this way and why?

Hair dye is an interesting concept. In the 80s, I remember asking how President Reagan (in his 70s at the time) did not have gray hair. It was explained to me that he dyed his hair. I remember around the same time seeing a high school female student in the cafeteria with green hair. My 3rd grade compadres and I laughed hysterically which led to a lecture from our teacher. Nowadays, coloring one's hair is highly commonplace. We notice, but tend not to judge. It is as commonplace as seeing one eat a triple quarter pounder meal at McDonald’s. Meaning, I hope you are enjoying that experience but I would need a paramedic close by if this were my lunch du jour.
This brings me to my song analysis of the day; “Black No. 1: by Type O’ Negative. I remember listening to this song, in the summer of 1997, while playing cards with my love interest at the time in my bachelor pad on Monhegan Island. I had heard the song before, but didn’t begin to truly appreciate it until then. There was something about my girlfriend singing along to it that really stuck and it is a pleasant memory for me. It wasn’t until many years later that I revisited the tune. The year would have been 2019. I had switched jobs and I was recently separated from my wife. One day during this time, I thought about that experience in 1997 but couldn’t remember the name of the song (I did remember it was done by Type O Negative). After about a minute of searching, I found it. What I go back to, when I listen, is the 11:00 minute album version (I have shared the YouTube link in the notes).

What are qualities in another person you now realize you NEED for a relationship to work ?

To the woman who will always be known as the “Sandra-Dee”. Yes, there have been broadway shows starring other well-known actresses (Debbie Gibson being one) and thousands of high school productions that have many playing this iconic role. However, there is only one true Sandra-Dee. I am glad you were unable to speak in an American accent during your performance. The Australian accent added to your innocence and was also fitting to your diabolical shift when you truly needed a man who was electrified. You certainly were not lousy in your virginity and truly showed your beauty as the goddess that you were in the end.
Have you upset others often while dating?
Dating at any age is tricky. At 50 plus, it is especially challenging. Luckily, I find myself in most situations where if there isn’t a “spark” we move on as either friends or simply wish each other well as we likely won’t see each other again. However, there have been a couple instances where I wasn’t on the same page as the other person. This has led to harsh feelings towards me which I wish didn’t happen as I still respected the other individuals. This is very hard for me as I don’t like disappointing others. Anyway, has anyone else felt this way?
Matt and Chris love comedy. Bill Hicks and Mitch Hedberg both died way too young and possibly before their prime. The two entertainers are discussed along with other out of the blue topics.

The two recently turned 50 something year-olds do an actor Bruce Campbell tribute show as they review two of his movies. They also talk about comic books and other things that are indeed wicked awesome.
Matt talks about what has been going on in his life this weekend. This involves working on a Saturday, band practice, Zumba, naps, springing forward, and dreams about Trump (yikes). He also listened to an interesting podcast where a host discussed the importance of sexual compatibility before having sex. Naturally, Matt threw this out into the world of social media and received many responses.
This was the post: I was listening to a podcast on my way to work. The host (a very nice lady in our age group) was talking about the importance of sexual compatibility. She stated that it is crucial for two individuals to determine if they are sexually compatible before having sex. This makes me think of a couple of questions: Is it possible to determine sexual compatibility before having sex? If yes, how likely is this to occur?
Matt discusses the days leading up to March 5, 2023 (his birthday). He revisits his bucket list items which were created 2 years ago. The question is asked again: Is happiness a choice? Being 52 is not old and the host feels pretty good about life.

I am taking a vacation this week from and am traveling with one of my kids. This is much needed and the timing couldn’t be better. This is the first real vacation I have taken in 14 months and it will be difficult for me to settle into it and truly enjoy myself. But, I am going to try.

We talk about being true to ourselves and others when it comes to how we develop relationships. Executions in Maine: Maine abolished the death penalty in 1876, reestablished it for murder in 1883, and finally abolished it in 1887. I was listening to music the other day as I often do. A song came to mind that I hadn’t heard in awhile, Audioslaves’ “I am the highway”. I say it is by Auidioslave, but this song is truly a gem written by Chris Cornell who was the lead singer of the band. The live versions of this typically started with just him singing while playing an acoustic guitar. As his vocals would build towards the last half of the song, the rest of the musicians would join him as it ended with powerful emotion. Afterwards, I am left with chills. It is the type of feeling I truly wish other people could feel with me......Anyway, the message of this song as explained by many metaphors is basically, “You may not think I’m great, but I am going to do everything within my being to make sure that I one day do feel great about who I am.”

Sgt. Williams and I review the 80s darkish teen comedy “3 O’Clock High”. Does it stand the test of time?
One movie that is complete and total shite is the 2013 movie “Bad Words”. Until last week, I never knew this movie existed. A coworker mentioned how she rented it and enjoyed it. The reasons, it dealt with Spelling Bees which she is a big fan of. She also described this as a dark comedy. I am a fan of dark comedies so I marked it down as a movie to watch. So, this past Saturday night I was by myself (lonely single Gen-X guy on a Saturday night) cooked my lonely guy meal of choice (frozen pizza) and discovered that “Bad Words” was streaming on HBO.
This week I have thrown a few questions out in the Twittersphere. Initially, I didn’t get many responses. I am forever trying to figure Twitter out. I am surprised when I do get responses (for example. The Tweet “I just received 200 listeners last month” earned me more than 100 comments and follows). However, when I add hashtags, create polls, or ask questions for podcast material I tend to get very little. What I did differently this time was to tag a few followers who I knew would add valuable answers to the types of questions I was asking. In the end, I was able to get some really good responses to my questions and I share these answers with you now.
I mentioned last week that my oldest is graduating from high school and this triggered memories from the time of my life when I celebrated the same accomplishment. As this is the weekend of him graduating high school, I am thinking about all the milestones in my life which many of you can relate to. Also, dating profile messages.
In essence, I was a jerk. Some would go further and say (based on what I am about to tell you) are the actions of an asshole.
In the end, Karma is the B-Word.
My short episodes regarding relationships/dating/love, from my perspective of being slightly over the age of 50 and being single, have received many listens. I continue to have many of you share your own thoughts (which I truly do appreciate). In this episode, I talk about the “damaged goods" concept.

As we discuss movies from our childhood standing the test of time, should we feel guilty remembering how we laughed at the most important things? Is it OK that some remember certain movies fondly? Stout and I discuss our top 10 scary songs, plus a few honorable mentions. The chitty-chat room was up to the usual shenanigans. A guy by the name of Make Me called in. Matt (aka...Brother Wicked) needs a victory.
RJ Keller and I discussed our top ten guilty pleasure TV shows. I also mentioned shows that people mentioned on my social media. The usual suspects were in the chitty-chat room (Father Brian, Lady Rebecca, LillJ, Sgt. Williams, Chis Unplugged YEET, Lady Mee, and Rounding Third). TV guilty pleasure shows can be debatable as to what truly makes us feel guilty for watching. I was pleasantly surprised at how we agreed on nearly all of the shows being enjoyable in spite of our guilt. It was a fun show to do and I truly hope you enjoy listening.
Do the following movies stand the test of time? Stand By Me (1986) and The Lost Boys (1987). My friend Sgt. Williams and I reviewed these and provided opinions as to if they are as good as we remember them being. One thing is for sure, the world needs more sexy, shirtless, saxophone players.

This interview/conversation I truly enjoyed. It was my first segment of “I don’t know nothing!” This is where a guest comes on the show and provides information on a topic I know very little to nothing about. I am proud to begin the series by interviewing Father Brian (cohost of Planet ADHD). In this episode, he provides a very elaborate perspective of, the highly popular role playing game, Dungeons and Dragons. His explanation of his experience with the game is presented in a manner that allows for non-gamers to understand. We also get off topic a bit, but we never fail to entertain. A must listen.
In this quickly put together show (as if my other shows take planning….ha) Chis and I talk about guilty pleasure movies. We were pleasantly surprised how people in the chitty-chat room understood what a guilty pleasure truly is. Matt listed all the movies his “FaceThing” friends listed. Chris said he couldn’t come up with a guilty pleasure movie, then he accidentally names one. Our local friend Brent called in and named his guilty pleasure movie. We also sang a very sappy song with him. Before his call ended, Brent told us a story that had me laughing on the floor. This is indeed his super power. Many new faces appeared in the studio which is always good to see. The live room keeps growing and we are having all kinds of fun. Keep laughing and always smile.

We were somehow able to do an album review. Had the privilege of Father Brian calling in. Topics included a well-endowed ballet dancer, butt crack leggins, shirtless old guys who play guitar, 80s albums to make love to, and serious talk about getting old. Some technical glitches, but we made it through. Good to see some new faces in the chat-room. The conversation went until time ran out.
