I am certain that there are many true believers out there who will be very bothered by what I have to say on this matter. I'm going to ask you to listen anyhow.
For years I have heard prayers by very devout Christians pleading with God to remove the spirit of religion from the Church. Until recently I've prayed many of these prayers myself. I believe we've made a grave mistake in doing so, one with far reaching consequences.
Our mistaken prayers come from a misunderstanding of what it means to be truly religious. As an overall faith culture the masses have clung to clever sayings like "I'm not religious; I just love Jesus," rather than seeking out what Scripture really has to say about it.
Join with me, Karen Pennington, as I present and wrestle with what Scripture really has to say about religion, and why we desperately need to invite that spirit of true religion back in our church. If you're not convinced, I invite you to wrestle with the Scripture below on your own (sometimes religion is translated as worship or holiness, but the word is the same in the original Greek). If you find the message true and compelling, then I ask you to share it with others.

There is something extremely peaceful and life giving about holding a sleeping toddler in your arms, and the blessing goes both ways. It pleases God when we seek out that kind of peace and embrace in God's arms. With the coming of Christ, Emmanuel, we no longer need to journey to a specific place to receive this kind of embrace, because God is with those of us who have received Christ as Savior. The word advent refers to both the coming of someone or something of great importance and the advance preparation for that coming. The irony of the Christmas season, which is also called the season of Advent, is that every year we prepare for a celebration for someone who has already come and who is already here. In essence, the season of Advent is really a time where we prepare our hearts in advance to remember what has already happened. Not only does God deserve this. We need it.

Sometimes it take a loud or abrasive sound to wake us from a deep sleep. Similarly, God sometimes allows inconvenient, unpleasant and even sometimes offensive experiences as a way to wake us from unhealthy though patterns and lifestyles. Times of pain and uncertainty can bring an even greater confusion when it comes to identifying the source of our pain. That can often leave us turning on one another, rather than banding together to fight the real issue. In reality, the enemy in all circumstances comes from the same source, and it is not flesh and blood. 1 Peter 2:13-16; Ephesians 6:10-17; 2 Chronicles 7:14

Like glass, our spiritual vision has a tendency to get murkier if not cleaned regularly, and over time that obstructs our ability to see ourselves and others with clarity. Jeremiah and Lamentations tell a tragedy of decay and destruction that happened when the murky vision of God's people led to their destruction as a nation. WARNING: THIS EPISODE WILL OFFEND SOME OF YOU! Please know that this is neither my hope nor my intention. Rather, I felt a very strong conviction to share the truth, as I see it written in God's Word, to the best of my ability.
This is the hardest episode I have ever had to make. Part of me didn't want to make it, because I know it could anger some of my friends, and maybe even hurt some feelings. At best, many will strongly disagree, and possibly feel the urge to counter the argument or prove what I say to be wrong.
And yet this morning I felt so strongly that what I said HAD to be said, in so-much as I felt a strong calling to share my personal convictions in light of my reading of God's Word. Those who listen may notice that my word get jumbled up a time or two, and I took a few extra long pauses, because it is a hard message, and I wanted to say it well.
Social media has often been a breeding ground for a firestorm of hate speech and and all out battle from all sides against people who disagree in perspective. To those who strongly disagree, please understand that there is a vast difference between our disagreement in opinion and devaluing or dehumanizing one another.
Whoever you are, and however you think, you are a beautiful, highly valued creation whom Christ loved enough to suffer and die for, and no-one should ever be cast aside or "thrown away" because of an opinion (myself included). After all, the very first and greatest commandment of Scripture is love, not agreement.
I am always open to honest conversations, even difficult ones, as long as they are loving and respectful. I actually think it is important to hear from vastly different perspectives and to learn to dialogue about important things without having to lose either one's temper or conviction.
