People First Keighley & Craven is a self-advocacy group run by, and for, people with learning disabilities, and the people first podcast is our platform to raise awareness about the real issues that affect people with learning disabilities in our community, and all over the world. We aim to inform and entertain our listeners by interviewing interesting guests and talking about the things that really matter to us. This is like having a stage, to speak out and get our voices heard.
We are switching things up this week on the People First Podcast, as our team get interviewed this time! Our guest is Andrej, one of the reporters for Radio Slovenia (Slovenia's version of the BBC) who has also previously worked with William Kremer about accessible news! We are so exited today to be interviewing an inspiring and celebrated advocate and fundraiser for people with disabilities: it's Jack Marshall! As well as being a hard-working campaigner and fundraiser for both his rare condition of Moebius syndrome and for issues faced by people with disabilities at large (receiving the British Empire Medal for this work!) he has just become a first-time author with the release of "The Boy Who Can Not Smile". Hayley, a physician at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and went on the Inspiration4 in 2021, making herself one of the few disabled AND the youngest American to go to space! This week's episode of the People First Podcast focuses on a fantastic project that some of our members took part in called "Portraits of our Time"! This was a project supported by Bradford 2025 where people were photographed holding something important to them, like an object or a photograph. After doing some work on autism awareness in our office, we decided that it would be a good idea to share that information with our listeners! Each one of our podcast team members did some research and presented their own part of this podcast. We covered things like what is ASD, what are the symptoms of ASD, some well known celebrities who have ASD and how we can support people with ASD to live normal lives. Sm@rt Technology is a company that invents devices that aim to make the lives of people who need extra support to live their daily lives. These products include such inventions as a Sm@rt Cane for people who are registered blind, or a Sm@rt Crossing that is easier to activate for people in wheelchairs or with Parkinson's disease.

We asked Mike about death and some of the planning for death of both ourselves and also our loved ones, we also discussed grief and why it is important to think about death even though it is difficult to talk about.

Playing for Kicks have been performing at our all inclusive social nights for many years, so we thought it would be great to have one of the band on to talk to about their history and how they first got involved with PFKC. In this weeks episode of the People First Podcast we spoke to disability advocate and co-founder of The Disability Policy Centre Celia Hensman. We met Celia while we were podcasting at Naidex 2023 and wanted to take the time to really get to know her and some of the work that she has been doing. We learnt a lot about the legal work Celia has been looking at, and about the potential and capability of what we as people with disabilities have. Thanks Celia for an inspiring show!
In this weeks interview we speak to Poppy who is an artist based in Brighton. Poppy has an online store called PoppysPapercuts which sells a number of crafts which can be coloured and worked on at home by anyone who wants to be creative! We also discussed some of her other projects such as her GriefCase project, and why it's important to talk about grief.
In this week's episode we spoke to Jess and Natalie, nurses from Waddiloves Health Centre, about annual health checks. They shared with us what the health check involves, why getting it is important, and what they're doing as transition team members to support young people with learning disabilities getting the check.
We had 2 great guests on the show in this weeks episode. Andy and Harris from Bradford Buddies (formally Gig Buddies) to tell us more about their organisation. We learnt that there is more to what they do than just attending gigs, and we also find out how to get involved if we wanted to join the service or attend as a volunteer.

In today's episode we spoke to David who is a speech and language therapist. We thought it was really important to ask David about his job and the things he does to support adults with learning disabilities with their speech and language. We hope that sharing that information will help you understand how someone like David could help you in future!
Have you heard of the VIP Red Bag project? It is a pilot scheme first launched in Wakefield that aims to give people with learning disabilities a ready to go carrying bag for their Health Passport, and anything that they may need upon going into hospital.
We spoke to a couple of the people behind this project being brought to the Bradford District, about who a Red Bag is for, why it is important, and what you might actually put inside your Red Bag.
For our first interview recorded in 2023, we spoke to Vicky Donnelly the Strategic Health Facilitator at the Learning Disability Health Support Team based at Waddiloves. Vicky told us about her role and background as well as some information about the LDHS team and the things that they can offer people with learning disabilities in Bradford.
At the back end of last year, we spoke to Sophie Alder who is an Artistic Learning Manager at Northern Dance in Leeds. Sophie works closely with the Ability project, an inclusive dance troupe that works with people with learning disabilities. We spoke to her about a couple of things, including SHIFT research project and the Expressions dance event.
In our first episode of 2023 (which we're calling Season 2!) we speak to Angie who is a wellbeing advocate and influencer. Angie talks to us about her story and how looking after your own wellbeing is very important as well as giving us some tips about how to stay healthy your self.

In this episode of the People First Podcast, we interviewed advocate and campaigner Heidi Crowter about her work. This episode was released in advance of the court appeal on July 13th, where Heidi is leading the campaign to have the laws on the abortion of babies with Down Syndrome changed to be the same as babies without Down Syndrome - 24 weeks. Currently, babies with Down Syndrome can be aborted right up to the due date.
