This Podcast is a show where two friends review a randomly chosen American Top 40 Episode from the 1970’s, the most interesting decade in pop music. In each episode we will review all 40 songs in the chosen week’s countdown and provide some factual information on each song as well as our personal opinions, stories, and comments related to it.
For those of you that don’t like ‘70s music, don’t go breaking my heart, for I can’t here you no more. So let’s end this masquerade right now! Here’s the lowdown, ‘70s music, you were the one love in my lifetime and you’ll never find another love like mine. In this episode, we’re going to play that funky music in the Billboard Top 40 from the week ending August 28th, 1976. We can’t get away from the fact that summer is coming to an end, but there’s still time to turn the beat around with some great rock and roll music.

Do you remember the days of the old school yard? How about getting your first place and having thetelephone man put in a new telephone line? You otherwise probably had to be your own handy man back then. In 1977, being able to take a jet airliner downto Margaritaville meant you were livin’ the life. It’s easy for those memories to fade like smoke from a distant fire, but don’t worry baby, we’re gonna give a little bitof a reminder so those memories don’t slide way on down. This week we float on through the Billboardtop 40 for the week ending August 6, 1977, and don’t stop early at the very end, the editor may have inserted just a song before I go.

How long has it been since we went back to1975, it seems like it was back in the podcast old days, but maybe it was only yesterday? For some it was a bad time, when air travel was on shaky ground. The risk of a hijack was all too real and you feared at any moment to hear “get down, get down, get on the floor”! Fortunately for most of us, the only time we heard that was in the disco. The last time we had them on, our fans cried for “more, more, more” of John and Nate from thewonderful Deep Purple Podcast. Hello stranger. We’re a little late this week,but don’t give up on us just yet. The editing process took awhile because we sometimes made mistakes and couldn’t get it right. Seems like we never can say goodbye to the 70s, we just can’t get it out of our head. It is probably because as a nightingale would, we were struttin’ our stuff like a free bird back then. I don’t know what you are doing this New Year’s Eve, but back in 1972, in places like the city of New Orleans, there were likely people getting ready to bang a gong with the Witch Queen atmidnight. I’m not really sure how they celebrate in other parts of the world; in Hawaii perhaps they express their joy with a coconut. Now, I have never been to Spain, and I am sure their celebrations can’t be described in terms of black and white, but I am willing to bet they are drowning in a sea of love. For myself, you can call it a case of puppy love, but I hope just after midnight to kiss an angel in the morning. This week we declare schools out on the bottom 25 of the top 80 songs of 1972. Don’t say you don’t remember any of them because if so, I’ll tell Sylvia’s mother.

This week we try and answer that eternal question; what is hip? Apparently, back in 2004, it was hip to release an album of remixed songs from the 70s. As the summer breeze fades and we leave behind memories of midnight at the oasis, we listen to the music and critique the 2004 Warner Brothers Release “What is Hip, Remix Project Volume 1”. If you were one of these remix artists, would you let go and express yourself, orwould the effort just be a masquerade of the original song. Unless the artist was truly a dream weaver, because of our admiration for the originals, it’s gonna take a lotta love to appreciate these tracks.

It looks like we made it to episode 55! However, this week, the task is not easy, and it may be necessary to have an angel in your arms or even an undercover angel, to do battle with the devils gun. Tonight’s the night for our one year anniversary show. It’s a family affair as we welcome and are reunited with our special guests Nathan Beaudry and John Mottola from The Deep Purple Podcast. My sweet lord, as green as the way we were when we first began, I can see clearly now how we’ve been stayin’ alive for 52 episodes. We won’t be going as far back as December 1963, but we will be looking at the Billboard top 50 Songs from the 1970s, as broadcast on the AT40 Episode from January 5, 1980. Although there are quite a few foreign acts in this countdown, for the most part it is a big slice of American pie. In the ‘70s it was easy to have an identity crisis. Would you have said I’m a train, a piano man, or a dancing machine? Perhaps you remember doing the jungle boogie with the dark lady after midnight at the oasis? She said, “Come and get your love”. Oh my my, that night I truly got hooked on a feeling, although I felt guilty, because I confess she was an outside woman and so very young. I ultimately sought penance in the Lord’s Prayer. Alas, we could reminisce about things all day, but the show must go on. This week we boogie down to the Billboard Top 40 from the Week of April 20st, 1974. Will it be the best thing that ever happened to me? Probably not, but I’m willing to otherwise let it ride.

Well we survived the Nor’easter, whichwas really nothing more than a weekend in New England. If we had gotten a lotof snow, we know it would take a long time to clear. Still, we know that whenyou sink the shovel into the snow pack, the first cut is the deepest. Those older folks are smart and either retireto a place where they can enjoy those warm southern nights, or make an extendedstay in a hotel out in California, instead of waiting for that spring rain tomelt all the snow away. As it turns out, our Vietnamese friends have just rung in The Year of the Cat. Perhaps there are parades and celebrations featuring a dancing queen and fireworks displays to leave you blinded by the light. A real cat is a living thing, not a mythical feline that can fly like an eagle, and there ain’t nothing like the real thing. That is something I have learned well living next door to Alice. I think it’s about time we hop on our dark horse, rid’em cowboy, and pay a visit to our lady Mandy. She is staying at Junior's Farm on the other side of the mountain. She really doesn’t deserve to be stuck there; she should be a free bird, a nightingale, laughing in the rain high above that black water. Let’s hope our rescue attempt isn’t some bungle in the jungle, but if comes to that, then we will just have to pick up the pieces and do some Kung Fu fighting. Don’t worry if you’re no good; just start struttin’ like you’re some kind of wonderful. This week we follow doctor’s orders and take a dose of the Billboard Top 40 from the week of January 18, 1975, although I wouldn’t say #9 is a dream.

Merry Christmas baby! It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, especially since I saw mommy kissing the little Saint Nick as they were rocking around the Christmas tree, or where they doing the Merry Christmas Polka? I forget which song they were dancing to, was it Silver Bells, or Jingle Bell Rock? I know I am really hoping for a white Christmas, so we can all go for a sleigh ride. There really is no place like home for the holidays, that’s why I’ll be home for Christmas. If something prevents that, it will be a blue Christmas for sure and all the pretty paper in the world won’t cover that up. One thing I am sure of; all I want for Christmas is an episode featuring the Watermark Productions compilation of the top 40 Christmas songs of all time from 1971 via Santa and the satellite radio.

We did a wild thing this week. Like something your '70s rock and roll beach baby brother might do after partaking in some of that wildwood weed. Call it my mistake, but I’m leaving it all up to you to decide whether it was good or bad. Don’t’ you worry bout’ a thing though, because as we relied on the lord’s prayer to guide us, we think the episode is worthy of a mighty love. Since we only did 25 songs, this week we sped like a jet through the bottom of the Billboard Top 100 songs of 1974. It’s so close to Christmas, you can almost hear those tubular sleigh bells now.

Back in the 70’s, were you a ramblin' man, never going to the same place twice? When you passed through the Nutbush city limits, did you and your companion think we may never pass this way again? Did you just keep on truckin’ along the highway, or sometimes grabbed a ride on the midnight train to Georgia? In some places you probably were not welcome, and if you tried to engage a local they would just say “leave me alone”. In other places, they would play mind games, and even though you told them I’ve got a name, they would instead call you other things, like the joker or half breed. In frustration sometimes you probably just greeted people with a generic “hello, it’s me”. At the end of your journey, hopefully you felt like you were at the top of the world, and at that point, took a photograph of the scene. This week I promise to uncork that time in a bottle and will show and tell all I know about the Billboard Top 40 from the week of December 1st, 1973.

This week we have a special episode and a special guest. Back in the ‘70s the way we consumed music was different and sometimes limiting. Today you can just stream those songs you think are fire, and whatever your music taste is, you can do it till your satisfied. Back in the day however, you probably couldn’t afford to buy all the individual records or albums containing your favorite songs. If you wanted to get dancing and rock your baby, you may have had to buy one of those knockoff albums and that was just a shame, shame, shame. Hopefully none of your guests wanted to rock the boat, or worse yet engage in some sort of kung fu fighting about the whole thing. If there was a fight, hopefully everyone could pick up the pieces and channel that energy to dance the kung fu instead. This week we review the 1975 budget knockoff album Disko Hits from Pickwick Records featuring The Disko Band. We will compare and contrast the hit versions of the songs with their Disko Band cover versions. There are some hits, but a fair amount of misses as well. Once it gets to be after midnight, does anybody really know what time it is? Is that the time that you realize that green eyed gypsy was actually a black magic woman? That’s when things got super bad and from the heavens came fire and rain. All you could do was cry the tears of a clown. Alright now, let’s work together and heed the call to listen to the Billboard Top 40 from the week of November 21th, 1970. As the years go by, we have only just begun to explore deeper and deeper.

Back in 1978 was a typical day like another Sunday in Salem where it was fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.? Was that just too much heaven for a blue collar man? When Monday came along, in a strange way, perhaps you felt alive, and were ready to take a chance again. With that double vision now cleared, you left that bottle on the shelf and proceeded straight on back to work. After a time, all that bad blood would recede, and even the French who had labeled you “Le Freak” had a change of heart. This week, ooh baby baby, we travel back through those time passages to have a listen to the Billboard Top 40 from the week of November 18th, 1978. I have no problem taking on this load as a beast of burden and not once have I thought that I just wanna stop.

Long ago and far away it seemed the world was filled with gypsys, tramps, and thieves. Their smiling faces sometimes could hide the fact you were going to be a victim of a stick up. At that point you felt like there just ain’t no sunshine and you couldn’t imagine a world where there was. Perhaps you felt trapped there by a thing called love. It is not easy reviewing songs that seem so far away, and for some of the songs, it’s a thin line between love and hate, but I guess you have to crawl before you walk.

Then she pushed you away and told you were nothing but a dirty white boy and good girls don’t. You responded by saying, please don’t go, don’t bring me down, and why do you lead me on? Ain’t that a shame. Those were good times, but after the love has gone, you were just left with the sad eyes of a lonesome loser. This week we sail on through the Billboard Top 40 from the week ending September 28, 1979. It’s not really spooky that it is full of pop music, and don’t stop until you get enough.

At first, maybe you didn’t feel like makin' love, but she was one hell of a woman. She told you things like she never knew love before, and then came you. You were still reluctant, but you took one look at her in those skin tight clothes and thought “just do it baby”. You then went off to do your own thing, like a free man in Paris. A few months later, you got a letter from her saying that she really needed to talk to you and would you please come to Boston. When you saw here again and she told you, you thought to yourself oh my god, she’s having my baby! She didn’t make any demands, she just said “hold me, and rock me gently”. In terms of a commitment, she only said “I’m going to leave it all up to you”. You told her that you would hang in there because I can’t get enough of your love babe. Then a friend told you about the other man, the musician, the jazz man. In a mad fit of rage you went to find him and in a blind fury, you shot him down. As your head cleared and the people stared as if you were some kind of circus sideshow, you realized, oh my god, I didn’t just shoot her lover, I shot the sheriff! You fled, into the hills, deep into the woods, no time to stop and smell the roses, no time to change horses, especially in the middle of a stream. The horse was your only friend and you said to him, “It’s just you and me against the world now”, but then you realized no, you set him free yelling "go on boy, you ain’t done nothin". At last, exhausted, you prayed for death, realizing you would never see your sweet home Alabama. Then, that moonlit night, he came, a wild thing, and he spared you anymore agony. Let’s clap for the wolf man.
In this episode we spend another Saturday night listening to the Billboard Top 40 from the week ending September 14th 1974. I know, I know, it’s only rock and roll, but I like it.

In fact, there were those in the 70’s who pleaded “please mister please”, don’t choose B17 on the jukebox, because that song could cause a ballroom blitz. Everybody knew that it only takes a minute to go from some jive talking to really bad feelings. If things got really out of hand, you would hear people yell warnings like “run Joey run” or plead for assistance by screaming “help me Rhonda”! Those who escaped could only be grateful to some unknown heroes when they pondered to themselves that someone saved my life tonight. In this episode we keep holdin’ on to yesterday by experiencing the Billboard Top 40 from the week of August 23rd, 1975. Hopefully this time we’re spending is not wasted days and wasted nights. If it is, I guess we just have to concede that’s the way of the world. Yow….

You told your love that you just want to be your everything, your handy man, your telephone man, so don’t worry baby. With the Apollo space program winding down, things had really started moving fast in 1972. We were still quite young and often pleaded with our fathers, “Daddy, don’t you walk so fast; what are you some kind of rocket man?”. Perhaps you had gone a ways and suddenly realized you had forgotten to use the restroom before you left home. Our fathers would just smile and say “It’s too late to turn back now, but I know a place we can go, I’ll take you there”. To you, your mom was a superwoman and yet she would gently remind you that it was summer time, schools out, so let’s just take it easy. She would say “it’s ok to lean on me”, but then remind you to be strong and always hold your head up. Then there were those other kid’s parents. Their moms were more liberated, they drank brandy, and the kids would say “There goes motorcycle momma” as she road by on the back of a Harley, with her old man who looked like some sort of troglodyte cave man conquistador. Those poor kids a lot of the time came home to an empty house and found themselves alone again, naturally asking, “Where is the love?”. In this episode we say how do you do to the Billboard chart of July 15th 1972. Day by day we are getting a lot better at this.

With 12 episodes in the till, there ain’t no stopping us now, and you can’t change that! We started out with big dreams of making it, but not in terms of gold, only in terms of good times. As we explored the boogie wonderland, we found songs that made us want to dance the night away. Songs that reached out to the heart, as if they were pleading, I want you to want me. We heard music that made us feel like being in love with a beautiful woman. There were times we wanted to just go up on the roof and stare at the shadows in the moonlight, pondering the existence of a truly logical song. As we circle back to 1973, it’s yesterday once more. Chances are you didn’t have a lot of money. Perhaps you were just looking for the right place where peaceful waters run, your own Shambala. Maybe you were looking to re-connect with a missing family member, asking the question “Has anybody seen my brother Louie?” Were you just an uneasy rider on a long train running searching for your perfect diamond girl? You would only express your anguish behind closed doors, clutching your only Kodachrome picture of her. As you looked off into the distance, the smoke on the water cleared and you realized that there has got to be a morning after. Let’s face it; things didn’t come easy in the 70’s. People spent a lot of time searching the want ads and it was hard not to feel down on a Monday when you couldn’t find anything in there. Relationships were strained when he loved her madly, but she didn’t know how to love him, and yet both realized they never can say goodbye. The drumbeat of bad news made a lot of people turn toward the heavens and say “for god’s sake if there were only some way to bring more power to the people”. What we're gonna do right here is go back, way back, back into time. Let's take the average cave man at home, listening to AT40 from May 27, 1972. Perhaps he got a telephone call and he asked his love to speak softly because he just woke up. Perhaps he had to hail a taxi after his hot rod broke down. This week's countdown had some really fun stuff, some great artists, and a few songs we could have done without. Take a rocket with us through space and time as we explore some early 70's hit songs.
In this episode we review the Billboard Magazine Top 40 songs for the week ending May 5, 1979. This time period was just about at the absolute peak of Disco music which saw a meteoric rise, and just as rapid a decline in popularity towards the later third of the 1970's.
In this episode we dissect the American Top 40 segment from the week of 5/19/1973. The top 40 songs in America for this week were pretty diverse to say the least, but all in all it is a solid set of songs that had some interesting history behind them. The song list presented plenty of opportunity for Pete and I to add our commentary, praise, and a bit of derision.
