Tolkien’s attitude toward mechanization sometimes leads people to think of him as a Luddite, but that’s not really accurate. Nevertheless, he did have some negative opinions about “the Machine,” which he equated with “Magic,” and this final video in this series explores some of the ways he might have been onto something.

A child in my household once said she didn’t like The Lord of the Rings because it’s “for boys.” Well I happen to know some girls who also like the story (and other things Tolkien to boot), and here I interview one whom you probably know but might not recognize at first about this question.

A Lord of the Rings meme I saw recently made me realize that Turin, alone among Tolkien’s protagonists, seems incapable of forming close friendships with those around him. I think this might explain a lot about his story.

Aviewer recently asked whether Gollum is a “grey” character oractually two characters in light of his apparent split personality,and it made me think about an interesting parallel with the otherextended internal debate in the story: Sam’s debate over whether toleave Frodo in Cirith Ungol. It’s a fascinating comparison, as itturns out.

In my previous video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMXe8EwXsf0) I addressed the question of whether Sam made the right decision to leave Frodo and take the Ring in an attempt to reach Mount Doom alone. That raises the follow-up question: what would have happened if he chose differently? It turns out this also creates a new angle on the original question….

Despite the first volume of The Lord of the Rings being named “The Fellowship of the Ring,” the word fellowship actually barely appears in that volume, and only in its final chapter. Why was the group called the “Company” for so long, and how and why did it become the “Fellowship?”

Tolkien changed a lot of material in his legendarium over the years, but late in life he almost scrapped the entire cosmology to fit with real world history. Why did he go down this road, and what are some ofthe implications?

One thing that becomes clear with enough time spent in Middle-earth is that Eru can work with anything you throw at him. That includes Boromir taking Faramir’s spot in Rivendell.

In response to my video on how Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy managed to win the loyalty of many book fans despite its many changes from the source material, I received a number of comments explaining how his changes were necessitated by the adaptation of a book to a movie. In response to my video about the character flaws of Tolkien’s heroes (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAn8r-kqD4c),a few people commented that Gandalf’s real issue was the fact that he basically threw other people into dangerous situations to achieve his own ends. Turns out, that’s really not true.

But despite being (pretty objectively, I think) the best Tolkien films by purely cinematic standards, there are other films that have their own merits, and here’s why you should watch them if you haven’t already.

Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy are great cinema, there’s no denying that. But as adaptations they leave a lot to be desired. Why is it, then, that so many book fans still think of his movies as successful adaptations?

A common critique of Tolkien is that there is no moral greyness, that every character is totally good or totally bad. If you pay even a little attention, though, it’s clear that this just isn’t true. All Tolkien’s heroes are imperfectly good at best, and have pretty significant character flaws.

Recently the Tolkien fandom erupted in yet another controversy because Corey Olsen (aka the Tolkien Professor) stated in an interview that there is no such thing as “canon” in Tolkien. Naturally this led to many people calling him a traitor or sell-out, but their criticism missed the mark. Let’s define “canon” and ask ourselves some meaningful questions before we go dog piling, shall we?

When we think of Theoden as a parallel, we often think of him as the flip side of Denethor, which is perfectly apt. But it turns out his actual story and decisions are much more parallel to the protagonist of the story, which is perhaps what you would least expect.

The loss of innocence is a fairly common theme in literature, and wouldn’t you know, Tolkien handled it too! As with most things, he manages a nuanced take showing both the positives and negatives of innocence and its loss, if you know how to read his tale.

Recently a minor controversy erupted on X/Twitter regarding comments by Ismael Cruz Cordova, who plays Arondir in Amazon’s “Rings of Power” series, to the effect that he was trying to be the most Elven character he could be. Of course the critics said he wasn’t, and defenders said he was. But what were Tolkien’s elves really like? Turns out Arondir (and practically ever other elf in any visual adaptation) is miles away.

Aragorn’s choice to follow the Uruk-hai in order to rescue Merry and Pippin is made very differently in the original book as compared to Peter Jackson’s movie trilogy, but the same scene also foreshadows in some ways Sam’s own difficult choices much later in the story.

Galadriel tells the Company that she cannot see Gandalf from afar unless he is within the borders of Lothlorien. This is an implied limitation on a much more astonishing ability which is never explored in detail, but maybe we can tease out a few things from the text on what exactlyGaladriel can and can’t see, and how and why as well.

Aragorn has a significant amount of self doubt after Gandalf falls with the Balrog, in contrast to the dynamic, confident leader we see in much of the rest of his story. Decades ago, when Dungeons and Dragons first got started, there were a fairly large number of Christians in the United States who thought it (and many other fantasy properties) were dangerous and anti-Biblical. That was always based mainly on a misunderstanding, and you’d think by now that would have been cleared up. In the first chapter of the Silmarillion, Eru Iluvatar makes it clear that while Melkor may try to disrupt the music with themes of his own, all will ultimately redound to the glory of Iluvatar. Boromir’s death turns out to be a great example of that.

Saruman’s speeches to Gandalf have always struck me as revealing something of Tolkien’s opinion of politicians in modern democratic systems. Sweet-tongued and convincing but willing to sacrifice principle and honesty in pursuit of his goals, he reflects an uncomfortably large number of prominent figures on the modern political scene. Let’s analyze him and see how he matches up.

Say what you will about visual adaptations of Tolkien, we all would love to see Middle-earth, if we can’t actually visit it. But asamazing at it would be to see Tolkien’s vision brought to life,there are some scenes that are best left as words on a page.

Recently I was pondering the end of the Tale of Aragorn and Arwen, which has always bugged me because of Aragorn’s apparent ignorance of Arwen’s mortality. The more I thought about it, though, the more I realized his ignorance actually has a solid basis.

In response to my request for video topics, viewer mariayonde suggested I might have been a bit hasty in concluding that William’s talking purse in The Hobbit was just a fanciful embellishment by Bilbo tomake his story more appealing to a younger audience. Instead, whatif the purse was a Dwarf-made magical purse that came to the trollsthe same way as the rest of their hoard, which contained famed swordsfrom Gondolin? Here are my thoughts on this theory.

So I was incorrect about Watch It Played but also not totally off. He didn’t do a video on the game on his channel (https://www.youtube.com/@WatchItPlayed), but he DID appear on BoardGameGeek.com’s channel for their “game night” series here: https://youtu.be/bBk_jSE4Bf8. The video is a full playthrough of the first adventure with explanations along the way so it gives a lot of the same information but obviously contains spoilers for the first adventure.
Similarly, the Dice Tower channel had a live play session here: https://www.youtube.com/live/JVh0M-fSWqo?feature=share. It doesn’t do as much detailed explanations of the rules and mechanics but it’s for the first adventure of an expansion campaign, so the spoilers won’t be as significant unless you know you’re going to get that expansion soon.

A subscriber recently shared a possible plot hole that someone else brought up: How could the minstrel who sings of Frodo of the Nine Fingers at the Field of Cormallen know Frodo and Sam’s story past when they left Faramir? I think there are three possible explanations.

The Christian Scriptures of the New Testament have many passages dealing with the idea that God uses the weak and foolish to accomplish His ends and put to shame the strong and wise of the world. Tolkien uses this same theme pretty frequently in his own works, but why should weakness be a virtue? I think I can give an answer.

I recently noticed an interesting parallel between how Gandalf “punishes” Sam for eavesdropping and how Aragorn “punishes” Beregond for his deeds in defense of Faramir. But perhaps the most interesting thing about the parallel is that it answers a doubt Aragorn has about himself.

In Volume 10 of The History of Middle Earth (Morgoth’s Ring), we encounter the “Statute of Finwe and Miriel,” which lays out rules for when elves can remarry if their spouse somehow “dies.” Given Tolkien’s theology as a Catholic, it’s hard not to see some strong parallels with Jesus’ commentary on the same general topic….

The contrast between book Theoden and movie Theoden could hardly be more striking. Some of that is related to some plot changes introduced in the movie, but those don’t justify movie Theoden’s whiny attitude and complete lack of sense.

A viewer commented on the channel and asked a rather interesting question about how we can reconcile Eru Iluvatar’s essential goodness with the fact that he sank the entire island of Numenor and killed untold numbers of its inhabitants. While I don’t intend to make a huge argument for theodicy (the defense of God as good in spite of things which might seem to contradict that), I do think I can point to some things which would at least help answer the question while staying true the Tolkien focus of the channel.

Just before the collapse of the Soviet Union, a made-for-television production of “The Lord of the Rings” was begun. Called “Khraniteli,” it never got further than The Fellowship of the Ring, and it was...interesting to say the least. But it’s low quality is a bit forgivable when you know the story behind it.

A lot of people lately have been using Faramir’s remarks about High, Middle (or Twilight) and Wild Men (or Men of the Shadow) as evidence that Tolkien and/or The Lord of the Rings is racist, since it shows he or at least the Numenoreans who developed the classification considered themselves superior to other men. This episode was significantly better than many others in the sense that it was engaging, kept my interest, and things really happened. But there are still logical issues and the lore breaking goes so far as to destroy much of the underlying logic of The Lord of the Rings….

Amazon’s “The Rings of Power” has generated a lot of debate, and one aspect of that is the common criticism that much of the show is unrealistic. Equally common, seemingly, is a rebuttal to the effect that the show is fantasy and therefore doesn’t need to be realistic. But Tolkien would very much disagree with this statement.

Amazon finally did it—they turned me into a hater of the show. Up until now it was bad writing and lore changes that I could sort of live with, but now they’ve broken with the legendarium in a way that was completely unnecessary except to serve some poor story-telling choice of their own, and I’ve had it.

The question ultimately is whether Sauron’s ability to corrupt or influence other minds is enhanced by his own Ring, and in this video I wanted to explain myself a bit further since I think TheRedBook’s responses to my comment showed that I wasn’t sufficiently clear in my point. Episode 6 is much better than 5, with a focused story and some nice character moments, but the writing is still clunky despite many overt attempts to capitalize on the Peter Jackson trilogy and even Tolkien himself.

There has been a lot of criticism directed at Amazon for making Galadriel a warrior when that role should have been filled by Elrond. But how accurate is it to say that Elrond was a great warrior while Galadriel was not? The evidence may surprise you.

Episode 3 of The Rings of Power introduces us to Numenor and more plot lines, leaves out Elrond altogether, still gives us no progress with the Harfoots, and fails to improve on many of the issues I noted in the first two episodes. But to make matters worse, writing inconsistencies have multiplied to the point of being a serious annoyance.

Amazon finally released a full trailer for their Rings of Power show at Comic-Con, but what does it tell us about the show? What can we expect? Does it look like it will stick to the lore? There are some good signs but also some not so good ones….

Tolkien’s heroes engage in discussions involving moral quandaries with some frequency, showing that they are careful thinkers. Peter Jackson’s versions of the same characters...not so much, and the problems go deeper than just skimping the dialogue to save screen time.

One of my biggest concerns prior to The Hobbit being released as a movie trilogy was how to go from the epic, adult level of The Lord of the Rings to the child-oriented whimsy of The Hobbit, and while Peter Jackson made some moves in the right direction, I think there’s a better way he could have gone about it.

Following up my video on the soft retcon of Isildur (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYvQdTzfk44), I now address the question of what would have happened to Isildur and the Ring had he survived the Disaster of the Gladden Fields and managed to hold on to the Ring. Would he have given the Ring to the Wise as planned, or would he have succumbed to corruption and become the new Ring Lord? The Lord of the Rings gives us relatively little back story on Isildur, and what little we learn makes him look somewhat prideful and corruptible. But when Tolkien expanded on his story in later writings he began to look a lot more like a tragic hero.

In a letter, Tolkien says that Sauron had his Ring in Numenor, which seems to contradict The Silmarillion. But if he did, how did he get it back to Middle-earth when Numenor was drowned and his body destroyed? And if he didn’t need a body to carry it, how was Isildur able to claim it from his corpse after the War of the Last Alliance?

I’ve noticed that many people, when trying to justify their opinions about Tolkien’s works, resort to his statement about preferring “applicability,” which lies in the freedom of the individual reader, to allegory, which is the purposed domination of the author. But does Tolkien’s statement really give us freewheeling license to interpret his work however we want?

It might seem strange that two beings of the same created "order" would have extremely different power levels, but there are at least four reasons why one Maia (Sauron) might be more powerful than another (say, Gandalf).

Tolkien’s view of “magic” (or machine) was that it was distinguished from “art” by the fact that it was the use of an external plan or apparatus to more efficiently impose the will of the user. Peter Jackson admitted he didn't know what he was doing when he filmed The Hobbit trilogy, and it shows. Here are some of the key things I think the movies got wrong.
The story of how The Hobbit came to be written and published is almost as interesting as The Hobbit itself. OK, maybe not, but it IS interesting, and serves as an interesting backdrop to a lot of discussions.

Boromir is one of the more obviously flawed characters in The Lord of the Rings, but the movie portrayal flattens out his character compared to the novel and even slightly turns him on his head.
The Wizards of Middle Earth are somewhat mysterious, and the White Council isn't discussed in much detail either. However, there is some good information outside of the main sources.

People tend to find all kinds of hidden meanings in fiction, and Tolkien's works are no exception. Here are some of the more plausible alleged allegories in the Lord of the Rings, with explanations of why they don't really work. There are plenty of others out there as well, but some of them are WAY too out there to get into here.
Aside from the friendship of Frodo and Sam, the one shared by Legolas and Gimli is probably the most significant in the Lord of the Rings, so much so that you almost can't talk about one of the pair without discussing the other. Of all Tolkien's Middle Earth stories, Beren and Luthien probably take the most inspiration from his own life. Based on his own love story with his wife, Edith, and taking some additional cues from his experience with World War I, you can easily draw comparisons between Tolkien's life and the greatest story of his Silmarillion epic.

Faramir is a type of character we don't see much in modern culture, but I think we need more characters like him. And Tolkien's version of him is a good example of how to make such characters interesting again. The Story of Kullervo provides an interesting look at Tolkien's creative process and some of his source material for the Silmarillion.
We all know Tolkien wrote The Lord of the Rings, and many of us are familiar with the Silmarillion and perhaps the fact that he was a philologist by profession. But did you know he wrote several other pieces of fiction? This video explores one of them, "Smith of Wootton Major," which lies somewhere near the epicenter of Tolkien's work in the sense that it incorporates some of his personal views on "Faerie story".
"Leaf by Niggle" (aka "Tree and Leaf") is the closest thing Tolkien ever wrote to an autobiography, though it's still very much a fictional short story. It gives us just a peek inside his personal aspirations and frustrations.
In this video I discuss the theory that Aragorn's choice of a family name, "Telcontar," is intended as way to make Tolkien a part of his own mythology. I discuss the pros and cons of the theory, but if you think I missed something, chime in with a comment!
Perhaps Tolkien's only foray into outright comedy, Farmer Giles of Ham is humorous on multiple levels, from its nature as a parody to the many language-based jokes Tolkien includes in the story. It's a short, whimsical read very different from what most of us know Tolkien for, and well worth picking up. I had a hard time understanding the end of Tolkien's great story for a long time, and I'm sure many others have as well, so here's what I think it really means.

One of my pet peeves when it comes to movies and other videos/audio about Tolkien is that so many people don't seem to know how to pronounce things properly, despite the fact that Tolkien provided a pronunciation guide in the Lord of the Rings Appendices! Here's some basic rules that should help you pronounce basically anything correctly.

I'm a purist, but I love the Lord of the Rings movies even though they have tons of flaws. How do I manage it? This is how I approach a viewing of Peter Jackson's trilogy.
