Dr S T Lee Public Policy Lectures: Recent Episodes

The S T Lee Public Policy lectures were established in 2003 thanks to a benefaction from Seng Tee Lee, Singaporean business executive, philanthropist and Honarary Fellow of Wolfson College, Cambridge. Each lecture considers aspects of scientific, medical or technological research and developments that are likely to have significant implications for public policy over the next decade.
Professor K VijayRaghavan was appointed Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) to the Government of India in April 2018. The PSA chairs the Prime Minister’s Science Technology and Innovation Council whose mandate is to advice the Prime Minister of all matters related to Science, Technology and Innovation and monitor implementation.
The 2017 Dr S T Lee Public Policy Lecture looks at how the world can make the most of new tools for intelligence. The emerging technological possibilities are increasingly well understood – rapid advances in powers to observe, analyse, predict and control – thanks to progress in AI and machine learning, sensors, and devices of all kinds.
Professor Steven Chu, former Energy Secretary under President Obama, delivered the 2014 S T Lee Lecture on 10 November at the University of Cambridge. Science and technology such as the industrial and agricultural revolutions have profoundly transformed the world. In his talk, Professor Chu will first discuss an “epidemiological” approach of assessing the risks of climate change, and then provide a perspective on how we can mitigate the risks with science, technology and policy, so that sustainable energy becomes the low cost option.
