The Church Called Immanuel
Immanuel is a viable and vibrant congregation in Paducah, Kentucky, with members who actively seek to become mature followers of Jesus. We are large enough to offer a diversity of ministries and services to our membership and our community, but small enough to know everyone's name. We believe community is essential to the Christian life. At Immanuel, we seek to create an alternative community where the teachings of Jesus define our identity as his followers. Jesus taught his followers to love one another as he loves them, and we want to be known for our love for one another and for all of God's children. 1 Corinthians 12:12-27
For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free— and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the foot would say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear would say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be? As it is, there are many members, yet one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” On the contrary, the members of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and those members of the body that we think less honorable we clothe with greater honor, and our less respectable members are treated with greater respect; whereas our more respectable members do not need this. But God has so arranged the body, giving the greater honor to the inferior member, that there may be no dissension within the body, but the members may have the same care for one another. If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it. Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.

the best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets! 40 They
devour widows’ houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They
will receive the greater condemnation.”
41 He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money
into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. 42 A poor widow came
and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. 43 Then he called
his disciples and said to them, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in
more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. 44 For all of them
have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in
everything she had, all she had to live on.”

you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God
loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to provide you with every blessing in
abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share
abundantly in every good work. 9 As it is written, “He scatters abroad, he gives
to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.” 10 He who supplies seed to the
sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and
increase the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be enriched in every way
for your great generosity, which will produce thanksgiving to God through us;
12 for the rendering of this ministry not only supplies the needs of the saints
but also overflows with many thanksgivings to God. 13 Through the testing of
this ministry you glorify God by your obedience to the confession of the
gospel of Christ and by the generosity of your sharing with them and with all
others, 14 while they long for you and pray for you because of the surpassing

1Now when the Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from
Jerusalem gathered around him, 2they noticed that some of his disciples
were eating with defiled hands, that is, without washing them. 3(For the
Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not eat unless they thoroughly wash their
hands, thus observing the tradition of the elders; 4and they do not eat
anything from the market unless they wash it; and there are also many other
traditions that they observe, the washing of cups, pots, and bronze kettles.)
5So the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not
live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?”
6He said to them, “Isaiah prophesied rightly about you hypocrites, as it is
written,
‘This people honors me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me;
7in vain do they worship me,
teaching human precepts as doctrines.’
8You abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition.”

Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house in Gibeah of Saul. Samuel did not see Saul again until the day of his death, but Samuel grieved over Saul. And the Lord was sorry that he had made Saul king over Israel.
The Lord said to Samuel, "How long will you grieve over Saul? I have rejected him from being king over Israel. Fill your horn with oil and set out; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons," Samuel said, "How can I go? If Saul hears of it, he will kill me." And the Lord said, "Take a heifer with you, and say, I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; and you shall anoint for me the one whom I name to you.
Samuel did what the Lord commanded, and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to mect him trembling, and said, "Do you come peaccably?" He said, "Peaceably: I have come to sacrifice to the Lord; sanctify yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice." And he sanctified Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, "Surely the Lord's anointed is now before the Lord." But the Lord said to Samuel, "Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the Lord does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart." Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. He said, "Neither has the Lord chosen this one." Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, "Neither has the Lord chosen this one." Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel, and Samuel said to Jesse, "The Lord has not chosen any of these." Samuel said to Jesse, "Are all your sons here?"
