So you have got an idea for your business? What do you do next? I am going to turn this slightly on its head this week and talk more about what you shouldn’t do rather than what you should.
Don't be fixed on one idea
Don't focus on the product idea rather than the business model
Don't focus on the competition rather than your customers
Don't think that you can build it rather than you should build it
Expect early experiments to be expensive
Be careful to avoid poor quality or execution.

Essentially habits form who you are. A habit is something that you do regularly without really thinking about it, for example, brushing your teeth or checking your e-mails. They become part of your routine and then the ultimately become who you are. But the good news is that habits are something that you can change if you don’t like them although sometimes that is easier said than done.
The six steps to changing a habit
Identify the habit you would like to change or create.
Make the decision to commit
Discover what your triggers are
Develop a plan
Find support
Reward yourself
If you would like to learn more about habits after listening to this podcast I would suggest reading Atomic Habits by James Clear.

Do I need book-keeping software?
Software for book-keeping is something that I use everyday as it makes the process of keeping financial records very easy and efficient, however, it is not something I would recommend businesses invest in initially as it can be done very simply without the additional expense.
In the podcast this week I describe the alternative that I suggest and the reasons behind it.

Squashing those Money Mindsets
In this weeks episode I share three of the most common money mindsets and how I have seen them overcome in businesses.
You have to work really hard to make money
You can help people or make money but not both
More money equals more problems
The most important thing to remember when working through money mindset blocks is to never lose focus on your why? Why are you running the business that you have set-up, what are your overall objectives and what is the easiest path to reach that objective?

Welcome to Episode Number 14
In this episode I discuss how we identify what product or service we could offer in our business. In some cases we have that light bulb moment first and know exactly what we would like to offer but other times it might be that we have decided to start our business and then we need to decide what we would like to sell.
Our businesses are always going to help our customers to shortcut a problem. We live in a time poor society and people are willing to pay money to help us short cut the gap between the problem and the solution whether that is personally or professionally.
The first process I take all my clients through when we look at starting a business is to take 15 – 20 minutes to brain dump all your skills and experiences. No idea is too small or too ridiculous – they are all just as viable as an idea as the next one.
It is really important at this time to keep it very general – there is no need to be specific about exactly what it is you would do with those skills but just write down the skills.
The second part is then to look at the list and cross off those skills that do not light us up. Once these are discounted we can then circle the top three that we are most passionate about, that do absolutely light us up when we talk about them, that we could spend our entire days and weeks working on and talking about.
At this point we can then start to look at actual ideas for our business and how we could use those skills in the development of a product or service. If we take each of the top three skills we have individually and then brain storm how we could use those skills in the creation of a business.
This process can take time and as with many things it can be best if we have an initial brainstorm then leave it, go away, think about it, talk to family and friends about it and then go back to the list.
Finally don’t be afraid to make a decision to decide to run with a thought or an idea, to spend some time on just one business idea. The others will still be there if the one you chose doesn’t work out but it is hard to keep several business idea plates spinning at the same time so it is better to temporarily park the others for a while so you can focus on one.
I meet lots of women who dream of setting up their own business but are finding it difficult to navigate those first steps and often don’t know where to start, what the priorities are or where to find the information they need.
Sometimes it is a business in a completely new area that they are passionate about or it might be a hobby they want to take professional and sometimes they just think that their dream business is really only a dream and there is no chance of it becoming reality.
I am lucky enough to have worked with women in this situation and while it is not always easy and they have put in some hard work and hours it has been a privilege to watch their businesses grow and flourish.

Keeping on Top of an Expanding In-box
In this weeks episode I talk about my top five tips for keeping on top of an in-box which is fit to bursting. I share some of my own experiences and tips and tricks I have learnt over the last few years.
Unsubscibe from e-mails
Set up folders and rules.
E-mails on phones
Opening your in-box
Allocated time for e-mail management
Ultimately it is down to you to decide how to manage your in-box and generally it is going to be a bit of a mix and match of the techniques here as well as others that you pick up along the way. It doesn’t matter which ones you decide to use and it will probably be a bit of an experiment to find out which suit you way of working but the rest must be the same.
Your in-box should not be the thing that drives your daily work. It is an important part of what you do every day but none of us will take our businesses forward if we just spend our time fire fighting our in-box and while e-mails are a really important part of our daily work lives they shouldn’t control us.

Have I got enough money to ...?
Four out of the top five reasons for a business failing is that they haven’t done the back office work on the numbers and preparing a working cashflow is one of those important tasks.
A cashflow forecast is essentially a prediction of how much money there will be in the business bank account at any point in time and they are usually prepared on a monthly basis for a year in advance
When looking at preparing your first cashflow I have a few tips for you to consider
Finally a cashflow forcast is not a document that is done, finished and filled away. It is a working document that should be reviewed at least every month and more often if something changes that will have an impact on the cashflow of the business.

Welcome to episode number ten of my podcast where I discuss why I always work tight to a deadline.
I start by describing how in my early twenties I discovered that I work really well up to a deadline but with a busier life and lots of different elements to balance I have more recently had to change my habits and stop the procrastination.
There are lots of reasons that we might procrastinate and identifying why we do it is the first step to avoiding it. The four main reasons are
I then go on to describe how I have managed to overcome the procrastination and the most important thing I have found is firstly to recognise it, then to identify why I am doing it and then to address it and I love the following technique
It is a very personal journey and we all have to find the right techniques that work for us and fit in around our own work and life circumstances but I hope that these thoughts give you a few insights into what I have done and help you to get started.
I certainly don’t always get it right and if you pop over to find me at emmamiddleton.co on Instagram I will share some of good, the bad and the ugly in my stories there!
Welcome to episode number nine of my podcast and 'Five Tips for a Successful Social Media Bio'
Just like meeting someone for the first time in person our first impressions of someone are made within the first few seconds of landing on their social media page.
Setting up strong profiles will help with building a brand’s authority and give a positive first impression. It will also show that a business is trustworthy, knowledgeable, and approachable.
This episode takes you through five simple steps to ensure your social media bio creates the right first impression.
Tip 1 - The photograph
Tip 2 - Use the header image
Tip 3 – Include all the important bits of Information
Tip 4 - Ensure consistency across all networks
Tip 5 – Complete all the Sections
Doing all five of these steps at the start is great but you must keep your bio fresh and up to date in order for it to maintain its effectiveness. Keep your experiences up to date and add any new achievements and awards, add any new products and services and update any calls to actions. Changing the images can also help increase the interaction with followers.
And finally a social media bio needs to follow the 3 c’s and be clear, concise and captivating

In this podcast episode I discuss part of the market research process that I really enjoyed and that was finding my ideal customer.
The first part of the process is to complete a series of questions about your ideal avatar and rather than just listing them all out here I have added a link here to a document which takes you through them all.
The aim of the questionnaire is that once you have completed it you should know your ideal avatar intimately almost like you have been a fly on the wall in their home or read their diary.
Once the desk top exercise is completed it is time to get out there and speak to people and one of my favourite additional questions to ask in relation to the product or service you are looking to sell is ‘If I could wave a magic wand and get you the results you are after, what would those results look like?’.
They are your new business partner – you will ask them their opinion on everything you do every day and you will start thinking like them as you plan your business.
Your client avatar will take you from the point of ‘This is what I think my customers want to This is what I know my customers want’ and there is a huge difference between the two!.
I meet lots of women who dream of setting up their own business but are finding it difficult to navigate those first steps and often don’t know where to start, what the priorities are or where to find the information they need.

I often have people saying to me things like ‘I don’t like numbers, I am rubbish at adding up or I hated Maths at school’
Sound familiar?
The statistics for the failure of first time businesses are frightening. In the UK in the first year of trading one in five businesses will fail and this will increase to three in five by the end of the third year.
There has been a huge amount of research into the reasons behind these failures and out of the top five reasons only one is related to the product or service itself, the other four are all related to the ‘back office’ number crunching and planning.
However by joining me on this podcast and by putting in just a small amount of work you are on the first step of the road to ensure you are not going to become a statistic for all the wrong reasons.
Some of the reasons I discuss in this podcast include
Doing the numbers will help to give you the confidence in your business decisions
The figures will help you to analyse its performance. This might be financially through sales or through other figures such as social media posts and website traffic.
Someone else might want to see them. It might be a bank manager if you are looking for a loan or an investor if you are looking for investment to expand the business or it might even be a large customer.
Initially the numbers do not have to be complicated and look professionally presented (this can come later) – they need to be accurate and add up correctly and be able to provide you as the owner of the business some accurate information on which to make decisions.
Each month I like to have a morning blocked out as a financial meeting with myself. I take this time to review the previous months figures, see what went well and what didn’t work so well and analyse where the improvements could be.
I also review my financial records for the previous month and make sure I have got copies of all my receipts and sent all my invoices to clients. I then take the time to plan the following month – look at my budgets and cashflows along side my goals and predictions for the following month, quarter and year.

What is a successful business?
I use the term successful business all the time with my clients, in my marketing and in conversations with friends and contacts and I thought it would be interesting to drill down into what it actually means for us in our businesses.
In this episode I discuss the two main areas to consider when deciding on the success of your business.
Why are you planning on starting up your business or continuing with the development and running of your existing business?
To help answer this I explain the seven levels deep exercise.
Q1 – What is important to you about having a successful business?
Q2 – Why is it important to you?
Q3 - Why is it important to you?
Q4 - Why is it important to you?
Q5 - Why is it important to you?
Q6 – Specifically why is it important to you?
Q7 – Why is it important to you? (This is the most important answer and a key driver for your business)
What is a successful business for you is very personal and it depends on what your personal goals are for the business.
I am a big believer in trusting your gut instinct – but the numbers never lie and while you can get a good feel of the success of your business from the feedback you are receiving it is so important to know that the numbers stack up as well.
Finally the key question to be asking yourself is should I be investing my time and energy somewhere else?
I meet lots of women who dream of setting up their own business but are finding it difficult to navigate those first steps and often don’t know where to start, what the priorities are or where to find the information they need.
Sometimes it is a business in a completely new area that they are passionate about or it might be a hobby they want to take professional and sometimes they just think that their dream business is really only a dream and there is no chance of it becoming reality.

Finding the time!
Finding the time! It is something that many of my clients talk about and is also a conversation that is often discussed amongst my friends. We have often got all the ideas and know what we would like to be doing but we never quite manage to get it all done and forever feel like we are running on that hamster wheel.
What do I actually do with the 24 hours available to me?
Join me as I discuss how I have changed the way I work over the last few years and share a few tips and tricks that have worked for me.

Welcome to the Blossoming Business with Emma Middleton podcast.
In this episode join me as I talk about a topic that we all do everyday either consciously or sub consciously and that is market research which is essentially checking the viability of our ideas. I mainly talk about research into your competitors and the market as a whole.
All we are trying to do as part of this research is validate our business idea. We are all guilty of comparing ourselves to others (whether its personally or in business) and it is really important that at this stage we do not look at someone else’s website and think that what they are doing is amazing and I will never be able to complete with them.
First of all there is no one else in the world like you. If you and I were to deliver exactly the same service to the same person we would not deliver it in the same way, we would not offer the same customer service, we would not bring the same experiences and stories and we would not use the same language.
Secondly those websites that look better than you or the Facebook groups that have lots of followers are just further along on the same journey as you. They once started out just as you are doing with no website and no followers and they have gradually increased their businesses to what you see today.
I meet lots of women who dream of setting up their own business but are finding it difficult to navigate those first steps and often don’t know where to start, what the priorities are or where to find the information they need.

‘Setting my Vision Whatever the Time of Year’
Introduction
In this episode I talk about how I set my vision and why 1st January is not the only time that you can set a vision. I talk about vision, dreams and goals and that my dream is when I am looking long term at my future in three to five years time while my vision is where I want to be in a year time and my goals are more specific ways in which I am going to meet that vision and therefore the dream.
Setting the Vision
Spend no more than 10 minutes thinking about the year ahead and writing down some initial thoughts about what I would like it to look like, this is not the final vision but is a great way to get those initial thoughts down on paper.
Break your thoughts down into four main areas, i) work and business ii) finance iii) family and relationships iv) health and well-being.
Take each of these four areas in turn and carry out a mini audit of them outlining what is going well, what is going not so well and what parts of your vision is in line with that particular area for the next 12 months.
Finally go back through them and start setting some goals.
Goals
Goals need to be specific, achievable and also aspirational to give you something to work towards and aim for with realistic timeframes.
A Visual Vision
Once I have got my vision for the year together I do then like to be a bit more creative and put photos and pictures of them together in a vision board which I keep printed out next to my desk so I see it everyday and it reminds me of the direction in which I am heading.
Review, review, review
Your vision needs to be a constantly moving document that you review regularly.
Timescales
And finally goals do not need to be set for a year and they don’t need to be set on 1 January for the next 12 months. It doesn’t matter what date you are listening to this as today is the perfect day to put together your vision for the next month, quarter or year.

Welcome to the Blossoming Business with Emma Middleton podcast.
In this episode I talk through a question I am asked all the time by my clients and that is WHY? did you start your own business?
During the last few months I have been thinking about it quite a lot as I have been adding new services to my core business but ultimately my WHY? has not changed.
Join me as I talk about how in early 2009 I had two small children and I went into the office from where I was currently on maternity leave for a visit and left wondering how on earth I was going to go back to work there and fit in being the mum I wanted to be.
I talk about feeling very torn at that time between the girls that I loved and the need to do something for myself and my own identity as well as contributing financially to the family income and how this led me to start my own business.
I meet lots of women who dream of setting up their own business but are finding it difficult to navigate those first steps and often don’t know where to start, what the priorities are or where to find the information they need.
